- Is it surprising that this song, released in May 1972, became an almost instant superhit?
Perhaps it's one of your favourite songs too. But is it easy to interpret or explain the meaning of the song? Many have, in fact, put up their own interpretation of this song in different forums; some think Neil is talking about his guitar in this apparent love song, others mention religious connotations.

Only the songwriter can explain the full meaning of a song. But basically most of Neil's songs are about love, maybe this one has something to do with a sense of guilt. But it is enough to appreciate his voice and the melody he has created with the words.
Your video is very beautiful and the photos you if Neil are of "my Neil ", in the sense that they show him like I think he was in those inspired days. Very well chosen, indeed! As for the meaning of the song, well, as you wisely say, it can have several different meanings for different people. To me it is a stream of consciousness ( to use his own phrase). I don't even attribute a meaning to it. Rather a feeling! This song makes me really feel! The same with some other four or five of his early songs. They spark or ignite something inside me. This doesn't happen with all his songs. I truely believe that there was some kind of devine intervention when he wrote some songs. I think the photo at 1:49 captures exactly what I mean!
