Life of a Woodsman - Fried Grouse and Potatoes

- Spending more time hunting has finally paid off. I was able to harvest a Ruffed Grouse that I fried up alongside a potato to enjoy as my supper. This was a very easy meal to make that didn't require a whole lot of ingredients but the final result was incredible. Meals like this are such a blessing to have at camp. Eating meals that are filling and also enjoyable to eat give you such a boost, not just with the energy they provide but they also go a long way in boosting morale. This meal certainly was a huge boost for me and I'm hoping I can harvest another grouse soon so I can make it again.
Thank you to everyone who watches! - Розваги
As a perpetual 'city boy' within a country where this lifestyle would be practically impossible - thank you for this, I love your channel
Bruh that crunch 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Man I could almost taste that it look so good. Catch and cook nothing can beat that
I love your videos. The real men channel. Thank you a lot)
Awesome job on this meal! One tip i might add for you to try: keep the grouse legs, heart, gizzard, and liver. Gizzard is pretty easy to clean on them, and a fair addition of meat. All you have to do with the liver is find and remove the small green bile sac.
sounds icky
Glad you mentioned it, does feel like he is not getting everything out of the grouse that he could. Maybe just not filming it, but even with the first bird I thought he was missing out on a few choice pieces of edible meat. Seems a same to put that effort into hunting then not get everything food wise you can out of it.
I saved the rest of the grouse for another meal, but I greatly appreciate the advice! Happy trails.
Out there eating tendies and home fries like a king.
Everything tastes better when your on the land - but that looks pretty damn tasty no matter where your going to serve it.
I wont tell if you wont.....bag them sqwidles. Lol great video man. God bless you and yours
damn that looked tasty. more meals with grouses please
this looks better than everything I had this month, wow
I always enjoy your videos. Your calm demeanor and pleasant spirit help to calm me after watching the news, which is often bad. I thank you for providing us with a glimpse into your life. About this video, those of us in the Southern U.S. love ranch dressing. I especially like it on chicken so that is what I would have brought on a camp out like yours. BBQ sauce is great too. Thank you for another relaxing video!
Making me hungry just watching that.
Thanks for sharing. I admire your strength to pull through and comment up until the last moment before actually tucking in. You must have been starving for this.
Hey I honey on fried chicken I'll bet it great on grouse also great vid keep it up and thanks.
It's always extra tasty when you eat something you caught yourself! I don't hunt or trap but I fish whenever I can, and cook whatever I catch. Pretty much like nature intended us to😋
Hello from Oklahoma! The Old River Rat here. Good Video! I am surprised as handy as you are with wood work, you haven't made yourself a nice cutting board. That poor aluminum plate is catching hell. I've never heard of a place where you can't hunt squirrels. We call them "tree rats" here and they are very prolific, both the fox squirrels and the greys. Thanks for all you do! God Bless!
Looking back at it I definitely should've packed or made a cutting board. My aluminum plate and stainless pan got roughed up pretty good. I've learned from my mistake and I will certainly keep a cutting board in my kit from now on.
The squirrels in this area are Red Squirrels and they are a fur-bearing animal which means that their fur is worth money. Due to this the harvest of these animals is regulated to ensure they are not over-harvested.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Thanks for watching and God bless!
Please make a wood cutting board from a log so you don’t destroy your knife 😅 Love watching your stuff! Thanks for making it.
The knife is fine, it's the pan that got the worst of it. A cutting board would've been a good idea. Thanks for watching!
Looks fantastic mate! 👌🏽
Looks absolutely delicious, well done man. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking us along for the ride :)
Thank you for tuning in!
This dude eats better in bush than I do at home.. Nice!
Love hearing your voice man, its so calm and never too loud. Loved this video and it got me thinking about my own dinner
Really excellent. Now you can come up with your own grouse menu to take with you outdoors. Maybe fried grouse wraps with anything you like, fried grouse with mashed potatoes and gravy, fried grouse with seasoned rice and bbq sauce, barbecued grouse with mac and cheese. Nice shot! ;)
Always great content!!
8:50 That’s what I was waiting for all along! 😃
I can't believe you eat grouse also. Joe of Joe and Zack survival est grouse all the time. It reminds me of quail. Don't think I would want that kind of bird. I'm glad you caught one finally . Love your channel . I watched you the other day . Thanks for sharing.
That’s an upgraded kid’s meal.
You my friend are living the dream and making me hungry at the same time!! Really enjoying this series!!
Now I'm hungry!
Nothing like freshly harvested upland game cooked on a campfire out on the range or marsh.....
Excellent looking meal. That would have been 2 meals for me.
Excellent shooting, beautiful nature, delicious potatoes!😊
Great video!
Here in Italy I like to hunt and prepare Wood Pigeon that way.
I’m glad the squirrels are not on the menu I like them. I like to see them run free and some people have them as pets.
Looks really good. Cheers, and God Bless! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️🇨🇦
God bless you too! Thanks for watching.
Golfing in the kingdom. Ever read that book. A good one on a camp out.
It's just super when you can get your own food, and not depend on the supermarket!
Love this series and great job on the meal! Happy trails dude
That was a lot of meat for one grouse , yummy!
Those Grouse Goujons look delicious
Love the little jumping spider doing its thing in shot when talking about that bannock mix.
I didn't notice that until you pointed it out haha. Good eye!
oh man that grouse looks tasty!
Man, I bet that tasted absolutely awesome...especially out in the woods. Great stuff.
Nice!
bro you deserve more viewers ❤
And what do you eat the rest of the time? Do you have some fruit and vegetables or do you just eat some long-term preserved food?
Kusk Bushcraft you have an awesome Life and your alway Content! Iook forward to next Video
Looks like an awesome meal. Good enough for a sick person to eat and get well
Love your videos, I used to hunt down in the Mariana Lakes area with my dad. These videos bring back some good memories, thanks for sharing them🙂
Thank you for watching!
Nice shot! Ruffed Grouse is way different than Spruce Grouse, night and day difference in the taste department. I've hunted and eaten a lot of bird, Ruffies are one of the best eating for sure. Looked like a well deserved meal, a tasty one at that. Thanks for the video, well done.
Yup, Ruffies and Sprucies are a lot different. Both are good in my books, but I do agree that Ruffies are the best eating. Thank you for watching! Happy trails.
Good boy tendies in the woods?!?!? Awesome.
Ketchup on a ruffie!!??!! Looked delicious to that point!
Can't go wrong with good old ketchup. I like to cook my grouse in with some long grain wild rice as well. Thanks for sharing, time for dinner myself.
Grouse and rice is hard to beat! Thanks for watching!
We love your videos! Thank you for sharing this series with us. Dinner looked delicious and the crunch on those wedges sounded divine! God bless you my friend!
Thanks for watching! God bless you too!
thanx for making me crave fried chicken at 3 in the morning lol
Well done with bagging grouse for the dinner table! I'm very envious!! Here on PEI, we get Ruffed Grouse in the garden, but I've yet to eat one. When I lived in Britain, I used to dine on Red Grouse, one of my all-time favourite foods! This video has made me hungry for more!!
Looked delicious 🤠
Par boil your potatoes before frying. slice them into thick disc's then boil until you can easily stick your fork through them, then into the frying pan, makes the best chips then.👍🏻
Thanks for the tip!!
lovely meal!
Best content:)
That grouse looks amazing! I could almost taste it. We don't have grouse down here in South Carolina but we have doves & quail. Really enjoy your videos.
So I think that your morale is boosted automatically when your stomach experiences such a blessing. Full tummy = morale boost. Energy boost = morale boost. Incredibly, we can't disconnect our body from our souls - our whole being is interwoven and one thing. It is separately UNNATURALLY AT DEATH. But thankfully, the Christ has overcome the grave for all those who put their trust in Him. I'm an old guy now, been experiencing this life for quite some time. Just saying.
Ha, what a great experience! Oh man! Mouth watering, I could almost taste it! I'm figuring you made that cooking spatula, right? Yeah, I would do the rough outback just for a taste of this wild grouse. Yummy I bet. It's fun watching you enjoy it and hoping for a repeat. Thanks Kurt.
there's no tastier meal than the one you have after starving a little.
I've eaten everything "pretty much" but NEVER grout. Gotta put that on my bucket list. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work.
Beautifully done!!
Delicieus dinner miam
Man how to use the rest of that flower en with the grouse Grease a little powdered milk woo doggies hot gravy😊
I love to use ketchup for my food. Either chicken nuggets, plain chicken etc. I usually add a little bit of spicy sauce. Simplicity is great
What a great dinner.
Nice episode. Nothing like outdoor eating! FYI, ruffed grouse populations NE Minnesota are way up this year.
Watching this video while eating breakfast and suddenly my hard boiled eggs look like crap lol
Good job looked delicious! 👏
Loving your vlogs. Do you ever meet any other wild campers ?
Throughout all my backcountry camping trips I've never met a fellow camper. I've ran into a handful of people during the hunting season but that's about it. Thanks for watching!
🎯
That looks tasty and delicious Ryley 😋
Thank you!!
Yummy 😋😋
keep it up❤
Thanks Ryley, 🤙
Thanks for watching!
Love your concept of a field to plate cooking video sir! Hunt it, process it, cook it, and yes the best part. Eat it! Are the rabbits going to be for food only, or are you processing them for skins as well?
!PIG, you could at least share it with us? lol oh well in a way i guess you did, and it tasted great! what's for breakfast?
thanks'
Really nice Hunt and Cooking Video. What kind of Rifle are you using? Looks like a Pedersoli Black Widow on first sight. Also would like to see more of this kinds of Videos from you.
The rifle is a Chiappa Little Badger .22 Mag. Thanks for watching!
Dude, you really put the Cheetos I'm having for lunch to SHAME! 😀
Love that you gave respect to the grouse. Can one get an exemption (e.g. to hunt grouse, squirrel, etc. anytime) to allow one to live off the land in Alberta? Also, what about predators? What do you do to secure your food?
I've never looked into it...but I can't say I've ever heard of anything like that. I just follow the regulations and stick to the legal hunting/trapping seasons. Predators in this area are quite timid towards humans and I've never had any issues with them. I do carry bear spray and a rifle for protection just in case anything ever happened. On this trip the temperatures were staying quite cool so I didn't have any issues keeping meat for a few days. Later in this series I will be showing some meat preservation techniques though. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching.
@@KuskBushcraft Excellent, thank you. Much appreciated that you'd take the time to reply! #AlbertaProud
👍
🤤🤤🤤🤤👍👍👍👍
It would be nice if potatoes grew in the wild but i imagine you bring your own?
What rifle are you using? Looks like a nice compact package. Thank you for another great video!
Chiappa Little Badger .22 Mag. It's a nice little rifle to carry for small game. Thanks for watching!
Were is the nearest trading post...you might need some wampum....
just realized I can do chicken fingers and fries in the woods... aaand I'm never going home.
Are there bears in that region? What protection do you need to take when you leave camp for hunts or materials?
Yup, Black bears and Grizzly bears. All I have is my bear spray and small caliber rifle. I try to take my rifle whenever I'm out from camp in case I scare up a grouse or rabbit.
Ketchup with potatoes is a huge yes but nooooooo not with the grouse I’m sad just watching that
May I ask, what microphone are you using? It sounds impeccable. Do you connect it wirelessly to your camera/phone?
Zoom H1N. I record the audio separate from the video then sync them up when I'm editing. Thanks for watching!
Impressive: But where is it hidden in the shot at 8:30 for example?@@KuskBushcraft
I currently live in North Carolina where they put Ranch dressing on
Ev-Er-Y thing 🥴😖😝😆
I always wondered, are you left-handed or rather left hand dominand ambidextrous ?
Since I myself am ambidextrous I just wanted to ask.
Hope you're having a good day!
I guess I'd probably be left hand dominant ambidextrous. A lot of tasks I can complete using either hand but my left hand is definitely more dominant. Thanks for watching!
Out of curiosity, what is the logic behind putting the meat in the dry flour, then wet, and then dry again?
Double dip flour make it crisper.
Thicker batter = more crunch. Haha thanks for watching!
Hoping someone can help me out, I’m far far from an expert on anything wilderness, but the last time he got a grouse I remember the meat looking much redder (almost looked like duck) was he just using a different part of the bird for these strips? Can someone who’s actually eaten grouse tell me what’s going on?
Best guess is two different species of grouse
Wild meat is red usually. The color hasn't changed 🤔
@@thecuriousvida the first video where he killed a grouse the meat was a very dark red, the meat he used for the strips here looked like chicken, they were pink.
Ruffed grouse flesh is a white meat. Spruce grouse, from the last video, is all red meat, even the breast.
@@Sproocey thanks for clearing that up for me
Have you given snaring grouse. I’ve had quite a bit of success using that system.
Snaring grouse isn't legal in my area unfortunately.
Made me hungry, sweet little rifle you got there, any info you can share?
Thanks for watching. The rifle is a Chiappa Little Badger .22 Mag.
Where would you take a nice crap after that?
What's the name of that furnace
Kni-Co Trekker Stove
What rifle do you have???
I'd like to know too, it wasn't in view much but it looks distinctive enough some eagle eyed commentator may help us out
He has Chiappa little badger 22. mag
Yup, it's a Chiappa Little Badger .22 Mag with a small scope attached.
@@KuskBushcraft Thank you
