I'm no expert, but that outlet box should be flush with the wall surface. Since the exposed wall surface is combustable you should use a plastic box extender that will prevent sparks from igniting the wall board.
Hey! Great feedback. In some areas that may be a code requirement but in our area that is not an issue. It would also take a very large and long spark to combust plywood.
We have one like this in our garage, now I can fix it!
I just use pliers to bend the metal mounting ears back towards the box so that when you install the outlet the ears stand off against the box.
I will have to give that a shot and see how that works!

It is sturdy as long as you cut the spacer slightly longer than you need and tighten the outlet screws down so it compresses the spacer.
