Expanding overseas for automobiles would cost billions, these Chinese EV manufacturers are small companies compared to TESLA. The largest one, BYD is only worth 20% of TESLA in terms of wealth and finance. XPENG is among the smallest ones. They don't have that kind of money and necessity yet to expand overseas. Not when their domestic market is still extremely lucrative. China is not Japan, China has a giant domestic market Japan doesn't have. Japanese brands need to prioritize the worldwide market to survive and grow, the Chinese brands don't, at least not yet.

Xpeng has been struggling to reach sales of 10,000 per month so far this year. This G6, following in the Tesla Model Y footsteps, appears to be implementing castings along with a battery floor. At face value it has all the engineering ingredients of a good car. However it needs to be manufactured at low cost in order to provide enough net profits to survive. Therein lies a catch 22, unless Xpeng can manufacture at high volume it will not reduce its production costs through economies of scale and thus profits will remain illusory. It may be that the G6 is too little too late for Xpeng.

However, it is likely a stronger competitor against vehicles from BYD, Li Auto, Nio and the rest of the Chinese EV makers who are making something similar. Xpeng can grow market share, reach scale production, and be positive cash flow on a faster timeline than originally projected. So, concluding Xpeng (with autopilot) may gain market share but the gain may not have a big effect on Tesla as much as it will on other Chinese manufacturers.

The Chinese brands will never be a huge factor in the US market simply because of the politicians won't allow it. US politicians (rightly or wrongly) will do whatever it takes to limit Chinese automakers access to the US market. Tesla is a strong competitor and they are aware that competition is growing. I really love the XPENG SEPA 2.0 architecture with 800V battery architecture, front and rear die casting and Cell In Body (CIB) battery pack : it is all the most uptodate technological improvements finally available in one same car and technically better than Tesla Model Y.
That said, with all thise technical improvements, I am bit disappointed by the weight (I wish they could get it below or closer to 1700kg), and able to achieve a range of 580km/600km+ WLTP with 70kWh/75kWh battery pack for base model, and 720km/750km+ WLTP with 95kWh/100kWh battery pack with 4C charging rate even for the base model.
Also what about V2G/V2L functionalities : it would be great to get 11kW V2G capabilities and to have one 220V socket near back seats, and 2 two 220V sockets in the boot…
I also with for more USB-C socket on dashboard, and several in-cabin and out-cabin 4K / 8K audio and video camera enhanced with LIDAR to audio-video record inside and outside the car on a 20TB+ on-board flash storage, to be able to rent the car and keep recordings to monitor potential damages…

I think this will be a big seller for Xpeng. They seemed to have thrown everything in it for a good price ¥209,900 (£26k without import duties). In comparison
Nio & Li Auto cars seems expensive and it looks like better specs than BYD Atto3 & Dolphin.
You can now pickup a 2021 Tesla model 3 for £28k and they have a much stronger brand in the UK. So pricing this right in UK will be critical for Xpeng.
The MG4 has been selling well in the UK at about £26-£28k. If they can bring it to the UK at the similar price (not £35-40k) then it will be a hit.
    According to Bard
'The cost of a ¥209,900 car in the UK including all import duties and taxes would be £32,987.00. This is calculated by adding the following costs to the car's original price:
    Import duty: 10% of the car's original price = ¥20,990 = £2,518.80
VAT: 20% of the car's total price (including import duty) = £5,037.40'
They may need to sacrifice some profit for market share.

The innovation of the Chinese manufacturers is astonishing- it is a shame that Western brands want their technology as well, Geely for one, SAIC for another. Their tech still comes over here as another car - MG, LOTUS, Polestar... so, they end up with the manufacturing base, skills & knowledge, capacity etc, and pocket the profit. The, UK can't even manage a battery manufacturing facility. With the computing power in each car, software etc, etc, we need to sit up and take notice.

  • @jerrycornelius

It would be good if you could make a show about what it would really take to produce, distribute and service a genuine Tesla competitor in the UK. It's not just about the cars, is it? I'm not an EV owner, i only clock up about 4,500 miles a year and car ownership doesn't make economic sense when there's good car club availability, but surely a major strength of Tesla is that they're selling a complete system, including an exclusive charging network, and not just cars. Also, it seems reasonable to expect that Tesla will be around for a few years whereas this manufacturer - apparently dependent on a single vehicle and subject to the whim of PRC state bureaucracts, could disappear into a memory hole at any moment leaving owners stranded. Or am i wrong?
