So much cheaper to have everything on the screen.. And bigger repair BIll as EVERYTHING is on the screen.. Must be some bribes payed to get that legal in the Eu.
The BYD seal costs < 30k pounds in China. The single motor version costs about 24k pounds, taxes and fees included. Ultimately I think the EVs in EU are still not that affordable.
yes let them ship EVs to europe without taxes and see every single European car manufacturers go bankrupt in 5 years! lol the whole EU is a lot cause when it comes to manufacturing
The up front cost is likely not affordable for a lot of people, but they are much more affordable than ICE cars in the long run. I did a cost analysis of my tesla model 3 vs a ford focus and over 9 years the tesla was far cheaper despite costing a lot more up front.
@@Kewickviperthe difference is that works for people who can afford brand new petrol cars, but a lot of people have 5-10 year old petrol cars which are wayyyy cheaper
True but it’s a bit different for cars. Actually, e.g iPhone costs about the same price. And cars in China used to cost much more when China was not able to produce competitive cars. Now the China wages increase but cars prices decreased dramatically
As an Indonesian, I think I would choose BYD over Tesla, you can buy BYD Seal here half the price of the basic Tesla model 3. Tesla infrastructure and support is still considered too remote to beat other competitors like Hyundai or Wuling in terms of infrastructure and support (in fact, almost all electric cars I've seen is Hyundai or Wuling because it is cheap especially Wuling here smashed the electric car market). Tesla is still considered as a luxury car though.
Ummm, when he was doing the test drive and he said the Tesla handled better, but when he was driving the Tesla, the road was dry and when he was driving the BYD it was raining and wet. How can you compare?
This is also why I dont watch this channel to draw actual comparisons. Its because Matt becomes very baised between many brands including brands belonging to the same parent company and country.
Carwow will help tesla on review.. ? You don't know tesla famous for not willing to advertise? I could say byd paid carwow to make their car review better.
In my opinion, Byd Seal is superior for 3 reasons. 1. It is easier to navigate and it is closer to a normal car with buttons. 2. The interior is way superior. Amazing attention to detail and the quality is just better. 3. Battery. Byd has the best battery in the world right now. Even Toyota wants to use Byd's battery for their new EV cars.

They're both awful. The Tesla has absolutely zero personality. It's the blandest car someone could possibly design. The BYD looks better, but still it looks too much like the Tesla to be considered good.
The BYD Seal has just landed on Indonesian shores this week and it already beat Tesla due to several factors: • Factory support - BYD is fully factory-supported and partnered with a well-known dealership network. On the other hand, Tesla doesn't have full factory support over here since it's sold through a general importer. • Established reputation - Prior to selling passenger cars in Indonesia, BYD won procurement contracts for taxicabs and low-deck city buses. The buses have decent quality and excellent performance.

@@Mathis218337 That's the magic, In alot of asian countries, BYD already won without even selling. If people are buying electric cars, they go after BYD without a thought. Most people think , its just cheaper, built better, faster speed, better service. There is no competition at this point.
BYD seal just launch in Malaysia, the Premium version ( extended range ) is even cheaper than Tesla Model 3 standard version. And comes with 19 inch rim as standard. And BYD seam more of a complete car than Tesla model 3. I just not use to no stalk at all for Tesla.
as I understand it depends a bit how you park your car, when "Auto shift from Park" is activated, the Model 3 is designed to automatically select drive mode or reverse mode. That is, if there is a wall, for example, in front of your car, the car will automatically drive back when you step on the accelerator and vice versa when you have an obstacle behind. The touch screen will show the selected driving mode when the driver's door is closed and the seat belt is fastened. A friend told me about it.
I always wonder why Carwow never talk about charging costs. public charging is so expensive in the UK (Around 85P per KWH) - tesla superchargers cost around 45P Per KWH - this is a massive consideration for any potential EV buyer but never gets a mention
Basically all Tesla chargers are now open for non Tesla vehicles in UK and Europe, for 10 bucks a month you also pay the cheapest price. We only charge at them with our Kia 😊
I don’t know if its an app bug, but just recently Tesla increased their prices and has opened most of their superchargers across Europe to everyone. It’s not exclusive anymore
@@Pouimatiomthat’s factually incorrect. Only several sites are open to non-Tesla vehicles in the UK. And the cost of doing so is more expensive than a Tesla driver pays.
ehh you get used to it. it's fine. People need to stop complaining about change, until they experience it for themselves. Then if it sucks, that's fair, feel free to complain.
Great comparison! Just an idea: please consider to put on screen the ranges in kilometers whenever you mention "freedom units". Your videos are viewed all over the world, and most of us use the international system. That would be awesome!
Freedom units are used in the US. This is good old imperial. He's advertising a UK based website, so makes sense he would talk primarily in the Langauge the customers he's aiming for will understand. But yeah, no issue with putting other units on the screen
Exactly. White vinyl doesn’t cost any more than black vinyl. They have no sense of style at Tesla, the same colors forever and then they add two more, a grey and a red that look almost identical to other colors they already have. Tesla’s are so boring.
The light interior was available in all trims and external color choices, but now it's only available in some trims and with certain external colours. Australia.
If I knew nothing about the BYD, I would still pick it, because it doesn't need the touch screen to change gears P/R/D 😅 Also I can't stand the lack of driver's screen. These 2 things aren't "features" they should be standard. After watching the video, I'm quite keen on trying the BYD when I go electric.
Honda e is fun if you dont need a real car for trips and stuff. Its small, quirky and fast up to 160kmh. Plenty analog too on top of the crazy screens.
This is why I bought a Model 3 Gen 2 instead of Gen 3. The gen 2 does have the Creep options. Also has the better gear shift and signal poke. Has even more room under the boot and drives somehow better and faster because it has 513hp.
In a 'normal' car there's usually a dedicated ESC button. Car makers need to move away from putting everything on a touch screen before it kills someone, if it hasn't done already🤬
Even if your phone is in a cradle its illegal to use the touchscreen whilst driving. How is taking your eyes off the road to try and turn the traction control off using the built in touchscreen any different?
It looks like near the end, you drive the Tesla when it was just starting to rain so the roads were still somewhat dry and had more grip, but you drove the BYD after its already rained and the roads were fully wet. You should have done a proper comparison of when the roads were dry for both cars.
@@nht_vng8669 It depends on how you define performance. To me, the Model 3 is extremely heavy and is mediocre in anything but a straight line. Driving one really feels like an old muscle car from the 70s. Silly fun in a straight line and then you have to actually make that corner.
The Tesla Model 3LR in Canada is about 38,000 Pounds after all rebates and taxes and about $48,000 USD after all. its about $66,000 CDN. We only currently get the Shanghai built Tesla's here with the CATL batteries. If the BYD was $10000 cheaper im sure alot of people would choose it instead if we had that option. Currently you can't buy any BYD's in Canada. Great Video!
1. Handling. For most people, the handling of BYD Seal is good enough and the softer suspension make it more comfort than Model 3. So the handling difference is none in 99% circumstances. 2. Charging network. If you often drive a long trip, Model 3 is far more better than BYD. If you charge at home in 99%, there is no difference. 3. Driving habit. If you still own ICE cars after you buy an electric car, just choose a more traditional-handling EV. You can switch EV and ICE cars effortlessly and keep safe. That's far more important.
To be fair, you could just use ABRP for navigation in BYD. I use it all the time in my Leaf, and it does exactly what Tesla maps does. Plans route for your car with charging stops, and tells you how long to charge at each stop.
Sorry but you dont talk about battery tech. BYD has far better battery thech, blade battery (lfp) that wants to be charged to 100% much better than have to think about only charge 80%
You forgot to mention BYD's batteries are all glued together and you can't replace battery blades and need to replace the ENTIRE battery unlike Tesla which you can replace each module.

Nice review matt, BYD is starting to get better and better with their Evs. I like Tesla but some of their decisions make me shake my head in disbelief. A new Performance 3.8 model in Australia costs ~ £35,000, and there's a £1,750 govt rebate after that. A new Model 3 Tesla costs ~£45,000. One of these marques is currently selling through the roof, the other, not so much.
Here's a suggestion to enhance future comparisons: consider evaluating the sound system. The sound system often gets overlooked in car reviews, which is a significant disappointment. I'm confident that many people prioritize the quality of the sound system when considering potential car purchases.
Especially us who drive 40000+km a year and most of it by ourselves. Also the microphone quality check on calls would be much appreciated. There is a huge difference between mf’s. My Audis and MB’s has had great quality mics but our ‘20 Skoda Superb and our previous VW Passat had subpar quality on that department. So much road noise that they were pretty much useless
True. Lately I've seen few instances including high-end cars where branded sound system was just weak or dull. I bought a quad set of Kenwood speakers for my car and the difference is very noticeable. Also few years back I got to drive 2012 X3 that had upgraded sound system, and it also was one of those "oooh there is more background in this song than I heard" moments.
Tesla model 3 sound system is very good. I am an Audiophile that own a 200k system at home. (it can't compare to a 200k system but it very good for car audio.)
I agree but also testing how loud they can go and still sounds good, because lots of people like to have the music loud to sing along on the motorway ect..

You have no idea how hard it is to get all that live info. A Tesla even redirects you if a charger is full or it senses to much Tesla are en route or if it just isn’t functioning. Many brands struggle with it.
Yeah, Tesla is still the only one that does this well. Any other manufacturer will depend heavily on the limited Apple car play or Android auto or use some basic charging data with no real time update for road trips.
I don't understand all the tesla bashing. Everything works in mine ... other than the paint. The charging infrastructure is clearly the best, that's why it will never be the cheapest.
Actually, in China, the cheapest BYD Seal just costs 150k CNY (about 16.5k pounds), and Model 3 costs about 250k CNY (about 27k pounds). So the seal takes more advantages in China lol.
In the old British driving school system, they called parking between two cars "Flush Parking", I passed my flush park on the first try, go next to the car in the front, be side by side, start moving back and half way, make a hard turn to enter the space keep going and then a hard turn the other way and you fit in perfectly
I genuinely believe telsa could do with taking some advise from its customers, like keeping the stalk, those lights a gimmick but people like so should have been in previous models too, seat covers etc.
They won't listen tho, because Elon wants to cut the costs as much as possible. Any feature that consumers would like would make the car more expensive to produce, so you can be rest assured that they will not do it. It is a similar situation with removng Lidar and ultrasonic sensors and only relying on cameras for Autopilot.
their customers won't complain, because even if you took the seats away, they would say "great idea Elon! why didnt the other car manufacturers think of that before." 😅
26:00 - Yes, the original Model 3 offers the stopping modes. They removed it with the refresh. One downside to the Tesla is they'll take features away out of nowhere for "reasons".
Tesla got rid of the Roll and Creep modes after the EPA made changes to how the manufacturer had to calculate range estimates in different modes. Other OEMs will probably follow.
Main reason I cannot switch. Driving can never feel as seamless if you cannot coast. I'm sure some get to used to it, but it is so disgustingly jarring for me.
We have an ID4 with no one pedal drive possible, and a '23 M3. One pedal is absolutely the way to go and we both prefer it. Getting back into the ID4 is a letdown, plus having to always flip the lever twice just to get it into B for Regen, annoying. In the '24 M3 it looks like they won't let you switch one pedal off, while in our '23 there are three brake modes which is great. Tesla and VW are both mistaken. All cars should have one pedal as an option, but allow the driver to choose like our '23. And it should be able to remember your preferred setting. This is all easy in software so it's pretty nasty they don't all do this.
I’m really impressed with that BYD. As an American I would’ve never considered purchasing a Chinese vehicle before now but assuming we’re not at war with China in 5 years time I could definitely see adding them to my list of EV options. Even over Tesla.
The BYD isn't supposed to cost that much. It is far cheaper in Asia, which is why it has been so popular recently. In Europe, European cars are cheaper but Asian cars are more expensive. It's the same vice vera.
It is cheaper because they aare supported by the Chinese government. Soon every major market would wake up to that reality and start putting tariffs on the Chinese as China wants to dominate and thus they undercut the competition.
@@Undisputed_King That's only a minor part as BYD makes something like ~10x the profit per car in Europe compared to in China. The real reason is that BYD is capacity constrained, not just in manufacturing, but in distribution, sales, support, etc. in Europe right now. If they sold them with a similar profit margin as cars in China, there would be a year-long backlog of orders.

I recently ordered a Tesla Model 3 Performance, and I have no regrets. Even if a BYD car were one-third the price, I would still choose Tesla. However, there's no denying that BYD offers excellent performance for the price, and the more competition there is among electric vehicle companies, the better it is for us consumers. So, I hope electric car makers from China, Korea, Japan, Germany, and the United States all engage in fierce competition.

I have both. I think many people missed the point, Tesla ultimate goal is not about making EV cars on the road, but an autonomous car, so the way they engineered their cars is very different from the Chinese. Whereas BYD is just trying to make cars as appealing to the eyes as possible, while running on batteries, but they certainly do cut costs on where your eyes cant see.

There's a lot of corner cutting in the software for sure. But I think a lot of quality talent is missing in the industry anyway. Taking a CS degree won't educate you on how to make reliable and performance-aware software - at least not if you took it after 1990. Most software is focused on time to market and imagined reusability ("Clean Code™"), in my experience. Tesla's software has some above average software parts but other parts are severely lacking, simply judging from the clock speed of the hardware. I can't speak to QA but they don't have the best rumors. They're mostly focused on impact safety, I've read. It feels like they're cost-cutting and preparing for the future, sacrificing UX in the present.
@@Muskar2 It's not really about the way it's coded- it's a design flaw. There's no room for mistakes or interpretation with a physical switch that discretely selects a specific gear, but with the Model 3the software (and your own senses) have to interpret whether you pulled a virtual lever far enough.
I bought a model Y, but if the BYD is available in the US, I would pick it over the Tesla. That gear change on screen is ridiculous, why makes simple thins complicated?
I have the Model Y and I absolutely love the gear selector. I will not be upgrading to the new Model Y when it comes out because of the gear selector and the steering wheel. That looks very inconvenient and annoying.
Personally I prefer the screen swipe since it’s easy to know that you’re shifting correctly by looking right “at” the screen without having to look “over” a wheel (or to the middle console for other cars). Also predictive gear shifting can be really helpful (eliminating need to shift some times)
@@5kdaking334 actually there are touch capacitive shift buttons right next to the hazard lights button (so you actually have three ways to shift total rather than just one with the stalk)
To answer your question about adjusting the regen braking in the previous version of the Model 3; the previous Model 3 Performance version allows you to adjust the front rear power balance, reduce/remove the effect of the stability control and adjust the regen braking effect down as low as you want in its "Track Mode". This mode was only available in the Performance version but it allows you to make the car rotate in a very controlled manner (a bit like a well sorted BMW M car). As you hinted at in the video, the only electric cars that are a practical proposition for long journeys in the UK (or elsewhere?) are the Teslas, for the simple reason that the Tesla Supercharger network is large and well distributed, with many chargers (8-16) at each location, whereas the public network is patchy and you're lucky to find a couple of working charge points at each location.
I think you should do driving test in same condition as Tesla's. When you drive BYD it was much wetter road so thats why you felt it was handling worthy. In my opinion
Seems like a great situation to me. If you are a fan of Tesla's minimalism, or their engineering and don't mind the minimalism, you get a Tesla. If you want tesla like features and price but you want more bling, go for a BYD. Same price (almost), same performance, different design. I'm a Tesla fan and owner, and I am very happy the BYD seal exists. I want more people in EVs, and more selection and variety is a great thing.

Bit of a correction: at 13:22 the "Recall" (a software update) was for Tesla to update their Autopilot driver monitoring system to more actively watch the driver and alert them when they take their eyes off of the road due to a few incidents of drivers abusing the system which lead to injuries or death in resulting crashes. The reason Park Assist (along with some other EAP features) isn't working is because ever since Tesla switched to fully using their Vision (camera only) system from the "Vision plus Ultra Sonic Sensors" setup, they haven't fully re-enabled everything. They will re-enable everything in the future however there is no timeline as of typing this.
Not having physical buttons is a big NO for me. I HATE messing about with having to look at a touch screen and make sure I'm pressing the right thing. A point of difference is Byd has V2L which is sought after in rural areas. The Seal AWD as tested is only £35k in Australia. The 2wd long range version is £5k cheaper (5.8sec) Similarly, the BYD Atto 3 is only £27k. Sales tax is lower than in UK at 10% which contributes to lower prices, but it appears byd still have got room to lower prices in Europe when they are ready!
erm, why are you putting the onus on lowering prices on BYD when it's likely the europeans putting their high tariffs on (might even be 100% tariff) to prevent chinese competition?
They can't lower their prices, it's do with EU tariffs that have more than doubled on Chinese imported cars. Germany lost their edge and can't compete so their automotive complex lobbies the EU constantly to get their own way, any EV's from China will have tariffs to jack up the prices of imports and make them look as if they are priced poorly compared to German cars. The goal is to obviously push consumers into picking a German car rather than a Chinese car to fuel the German economy. Tariffs used to be 17.1% now they're at 38.4% which has rightly annoyed China along with smaller EU nations as this means they can't get a cheap EV anymore in a time in which the EU have mandated a stop sell on combustion engines from 2035.
Tesla should learn a bit from the Chinese BYD. Greater design, pretty nicer looking interior, and buttons that just make sense and are needed. A BYD seal with Tesla level systems would be a huge hit
Why waste 20k on a car that'll barely last 2 years, when you could invest 22k in one that'll run strong for 20? Thought so. Choose brands that stand the test of time-so far, no Chinese brand has made the cut.

Congratulation on your purchase The significant difference in price is all down to Taxes to try and limit the growth of china's EV industry. At equal tax rates their would not be a comparison, BYD is a far better choice. Even at the prices shown in UK (about equal) I believe BYD looks a great choice. The only 2 advantages I see to the Tesla are the drive planer ( and honestly this could come soon to BYD or to apps like google maps or waze.), and the drive stability (I.E steering at 50+ M/hr) which wouldn't show in 90% of our normal commutes. In terms of looks, interior design, & finish feel i love the BYD seal. Up until the EV rebate finished about 3 weeks ago, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range was £32,000 while the Seal Perfomance was still £40,500 (as it was over the rebate cap) so the Telsa was an even easier choice
@@mindtpi I can't speak for New Zealand, but in the makers country, the Seal is cheaper than Model3. so the reason the seal is more expensive in Europe(and I suspect New Zealand) than model3 is because of tariffs that are higher for Chinese brands.

So why would you still pick Tesla?
Most of the BYD models are now designed by the previous Audi designing team, so it is not exactly coping others.
I never really thought too much about it, but this review helped me to clearly see that I don't want any EV.

Personally I prefer the screen swipe since it’s easy to know that you’re shifting correctly by looking right “at” the screen without having to look “over” a wheel (or to the middle console for other cars). Also predictive gear shifting can be really helpful (eliminating need to shift some times)

The Seal has no autopilot, not even a crummy version - that’s no good.
Tesla should learn a bit from the Chinese BYD. Greater design, pretty nicer looking interior, and buttons that just make sense and are needed. A BYD seal with Tesla level systems would be a huge hit

The significant difference in price is all down to Taxes to try and limit the growth of china's EV industry.
