I was offered to help with my suitcase by a teen Fnnish boy while off boarding Silja line last winter. Such a nice surprise! I accepted his help with a smile and thanked him by saying : Paljon kiitos! You are such a nice gentelman. Then his face just went all red! God, I hope he survived that!

Married to a Finn, not romantic at all, but very pragmatic. He does NO cleaning or cooking, and looks at the washing machine like it is an alien. I would love a bit more romance, but loyalty means more. He works hard though, and honest, and atypically not shy. Yes, his love language is through actions. When he says it, it is a huge thing.
he needs training how to use washing machine, you are not allowed to touch any dangerous machines without proper training. 😁

Growing up in Australia as the child of a Finnish man and Phillipino Burmese woman, this resonates so much with me.
I feel that Dad was more a pessimist than lacked confidence in himself. It was a strange sort of pessimism because it was aligned with a tremendous perseverance. I could see mum especially struggled so much with the way he showed his affection, the word stoic is how I would have described him.
Warm, funny and accepting of his friends, other Aussies often found him reserved and aloof which he thought was in no way the case as he never meant to be, he tried to be as approachable as he could (based on Finnish standards).
Growing up here I could see other parents said "I love you" to their children so when I was about 15 I told him I loved him to his face, I still remember how he really struggled to process it and he didn't respond for a few days so I persevered until I got a mumbled reply lol. He managed to loosen up eventually and could respond appropriately which was helpful for us kids.
It wasn't until after he was gone I heard about things he quietly did for people that meant a great deal to them, he never bragged, in fact the greater the deed the less chance there would be of him mentioning it.
A unique sense of humour, surprised when you approach them, logical, law abiding, hard working and reliable seems to be common good traits I observed in my Dad and the other Finns I have met.
I totally agree with what the Philippine woman say about actions. Is it really so important being said often "I love you" or is it more important that your partner shows that with his/her actions? It's true that Finns may not be very good at expressing feelings but actions do really speak here.
And honestly, I prefer a man that takes his part in home stuff (like cleaning and cooking) than a man who buys you expensive stuff regularly or is like super gentleman but expects you to do all the work at home. Thumbs up for Finns
Many men I know who buy expensive gifts for their ladies also got full time house keepers or weekly cleaning for the home, they never expected their lady to do the housework...
Why should you chose between that? You can show love and say it. Words backed by facts.
As a Finnish man, it warms my heart to read all the kind things that so many people here are saying about their Finnish partners. After all, the comments that Aleksi showed us on the video were more on the negative side.

I once was so in awe of a Finnish man. He was so like a king in his posture and extremely handsome.
I have spoken to him just a few words.
Our choir was at an international choir festival in Basque country, with choirs from many countries. There also was a choir from Finland. This man was in his early sixties and I in my forties but I was totally smitten.
That is all I know of Finnish men.

I met my finnish bf in Japan and I almost scared him off with my flirting/coming onto him :'))) Luckily he came around though, he's actually the most loving and well put together person I've been with. I feel like the biggest difference between him and guys in Australia is that he has a lot of respect for women (although him and his mom and grandma are really close so I feel like this influenced him a lot growing up) and his responsibility/accountability I guess? He will help with house chores/cooking/cleaning/washing ect. and I definitely agree that he is very very loyal. I like his bluntness in some cases; that I don't have to guess at what he's thinking/feeling. Although in other cases there are times that things should be said more delicately which can lead me feeling not hurt exactly but wondering why he didnt put it better ahaha.
Obviously a lot of what was said are generalisations, and not all Finnish men are like that. But I feel like Finnish men are way better than Australian men imo. I don't mind that my bf isn't a huge talker, because I love to talk a lot, and I think I've kind of influenced him a little in that regard. He gives me loving words and compliments a lot which rubbed off onto him from me. I love my Finnish boi

Finnish men are really the ones to just marry. Once loyal, they are a forever partner. About the trust, it is others who should not take bad advantage of that. The bluntness is bit harsh at times but often helps to improve quickly and no hidden dram. 🇫🇮 💙

Not sure about loyalty, I have been approached by a lot many married Finns online, I was shocked some of them having their dating profile more than 10 years since the dating app invented.. .but of course they don't show their face in their profile. I never give a shit about cheaters.

I always offer to pay on the first date; if she insist on paying for her half, beyond the point of simple politeness, it’s often a sign that the date did not go well and she doesn’t want any feeling of reciprocity. My own rule of thumb is who ever initiated the date also offers to pay. Bonus point, if you offer to pay you can throw in a lead to a second date “I insist ... you can get the next one”. ;)
I'd say that's the usual approach here in the US. I, as a woman, prefer to split the bill and apparently I'm in the extreme minority! But I do agree with you in that I think that whoever asked should at least offer to pay. It's always interesting to see how different people go about this situation, even in the same culture.
As as finnish woman, I like to pay my own way on dates. I don't understand why the other one should pay and I don't? :) I don't need anyone to take care of me: and I think this independence and equality is the reason why we really don't have the american dating culture in finland, and nobody assumes that a man will pay.

@@RoyRissanen Sure, I understand there is a cultural difference and some people seem to think this way in finland too. Sometimes people open doors for me, but so do I, no matter what gender the other person happens to be. I think it is good manners to do so if situation requires. And that's the most important thing anyway, no matter the culture. Let's be kind and respectful.
Offering to pay is definitely not a problem. If that's your style, then go for it. Some ladies will appreciate it but some don't expect it.

4:10 in Germany it’s the exact same! In Germany you never and I mean *never* say „I love you“ to anybody, not to your boyfriend/girlfriend and especially *not* to your family members. It’s just not a thing and not the way we express emotions. It’s interesting how cultures differ from other cultures (for example from South America etc.). Interesting perspective from northern Germany. I personally am from the southern part of germany, and i guess we can all agree that south and north are quite different. And MAYBE I AM an alien but I do say "I love you" a lot to my partner. And i dont mean like 100 times a day, but like for sure once a day. And I'd honestly be shocked if i was the only one. Also just to clarify, not saying it to my family members either, but definitely do say it to my partners.

As a South-African citizen I find them to be quite the spice of life, it is quite easy to find fault in their culture as it is with every culture, the only very Finnish problem you get are the dots. They speak their mind, awesome attribute and sharing the same interest makes for great conversation, besides I commend them for their bluntness, what they do in public we do in private, At least they are honest. They actually do show affection if they comfy with you and trust you and they go to great lengths to help when you are in need. Their actions speak their hearts and minds. Things women complain about can be found in every culture on both sides of gender, they differ from lazy to responsible. Finnish know how to express themselves, If you worth it, they will make sure you know it or otherwise.
Tho sometimes we are just too shy...

5. The First-time l met my husband, he was kind of pessimistic and he has low expectations in life. But it does change a lot after he moved back to Finland from my country.

Dating a Finnish guy currently, first time. He is a very tidy, neat person and very thoughtful when it comes to the practical side.
I can definitely echo that he doesn't do the big romantic displays of affection, but I can tell by how he speaks and acts that he genuinely cares, he just isn't the sort to show it the way that people in England do.
In terms of paying for things, in both bills and on dates, he prefers the practical 50/50 split, which I find very agreeable.
He's a little shy and lacking in confidence, but that does come off as charming to me, as I tend to be maybe a little more 'in control' of my situations and it lets me sort things out.
I would definitely say that Finnish guys seem loyal and practical. If you don't mind the lack of emotion and can appreciate honest words, they are fantastic.
I am 19 year old American dating a 25 year old Finnish man and he is the greatest man I have ever met :D I love Finns, I can’t wait to move there and be with him. What I get from Finnish men based on my boyfriend is that they are very direct and honest and passionate and respectful.

I think this each paying their own share relates to stuff beyond dating. In Finland there is a strong feel of independence and splitting the bill equally among friends doesn't happen either but everyone is supposed to pay what they ordered because if someone orders some expensive stuff and one wasn't hungry and just ate appetizers, that'd be unfair to pay for equal shares. This gets particularly complicated when travelling abroad in countries where you tip and waiters bring just one bill. The menu says one price, you're supposed to pay another price (because employers are such arseholes and don't pay decent salaries) and bill says a third one. A nightmare!

We are still good friends. He is an awesome guy and an awesome, caring friend. But I think I would not have survived the relationship without a heartbreak. I was earlier in my life very depressed, took a lot of antidepressants, got medicine addicted, than it peaked in panic attacks. This was in 2003 - 2006. I got healed, but I have to be careful. No stress and no negative things and thoughts. Like this, I am doing really well. Just enjoying life ☺️😊
it seems to me as a Finnish man that a lot of these women have a very limited experience of Finnish men and they are making general assumptions based on them. People are individuals and like-minded people hang out with like-minded people. I don't know any man who spits and picks their nose or has no manners, if the men around you spit and pick their nose and are drunk fools then maybe it's time to ask yourself why do I choose this company? :D

Yes I do expect the guy to pay on the first date. I can't really say why, but it's like a tradition and with that he kind of shows me that he cares. If we would split the bill, it feels a bit odd to me. If I would pay as a woman everything, that would be super odd. To 5:22, I am not sure if she means the same, but I remembered with this: Finnish men don't get hints easy. If I say for example: "I would want to meet you today", they take it literally and you can just get an "ok" back from a finnish guy. Or if you say: "Look, aren't these flowers pretty, I would like to have some for our home", you can also get an ok back and it doesn't lead anywhere. BUT if you say "Can you buy me these flowers", most likely the guy will say yes and you get that what you want. Which is strange. I live here since 3 years and I'm still confused that guys don't get the hint. 7:32 and 8:12 Oooh yes, so true. And yes, when I moved here, I had 54 packages, I still remember the number. My finnish boyfriend didn't help me at all, even when I asked him to. Exactly as the russian woman said, you can feel and see it that they don't want to help. At this time I was in my 6-7th month pregnancy, oh boy that hurted sometimes and I know I had to do it fast. I was really pissed that no one helped me.

The pain for delivering a baby is not the end but a start, the most difficult part I heard from many mothers is after delivery the baby. You need to wake up 3 times a night for months, and all kinds of work of taking care of the baby. I hope your man would understand this and help you with it.

I didn't talk about the birth pain. I talked about the pain when you have to lift heavy stuff meanwhile pregnancy. Ah well, you don't really have to tell me how it is, my daughter is now soon 3 years old and also my ex seperated from me in October 2019, our daughter was born in November 2017. But to get up only 3 times in a night, that would have been nice, it was more like 8 times in one night, haha.

On the paying thing, it depends on where I go on a date. If its to a movie or a restaurant, I would pay for my half. If it is a cheap date, like ice cream or fast food, I will usually pay ask if I can pay for both of us.
I'm a Fnnish man, and I don't like to pay on a date, since it would be treating the woman like a child. It's not dignified for an adult to expect someone else pay for them. This is how women in Finland think too in my opinion. At least the women I date.

In America, the custom is that if you ask somebody out on a date, you are generally expected to pay. Men are substantially more likely to be the one doing the asking, and thus more likely to end up paying, but if a woman does ask a man out, then she's expected to pay. There is a thing called "Dutch treat", where everybody pays for their own. This is the norm when groups of friends go out together, in situations where no particular person is necessarily paired up with any other particular person; but dutch treat can also happen between two people, if they agree on that ahead of time. There are also other situations, e.g., if person A invites person B to hang out, and while they are spending time together, person B suggests going into a particular establishment -- if they end up spending money in there, they probably won't expect person A to pay, because going into that establishment was their own idea, not something person A invited them to do.

To me, ever since I was a kid Finno men are very rare and have been a source of inspiration .They have a direct way and sincereness of communicating and unseen elsewhere in the long run that is hard to forget .I think that's hot.

In america its quite the opposite, the first couple of dates the guy pays for everything as good manners until you finally start dating then you can start splitting things. Some women can say before dates they dont mind splitting costs sometimes but more often its expected for men to pay for everything.
Also American and I agree with this. I've talked to many American women who say that, if the man doesn't pay for everything on the first date, there absolutely will not be a second one. I think it's still very ingrained in our culture.

American too and agree. American men know what the deal is and they also know if they don’t pay on the 1st date, there won’t be a 2nd. Of course there are women who refuse to let a man pay and there are men who don’t offer to pay. But it’s tradition for the man to pay especially the first date as a gesture of respect. If a guy didn’t pay for the 1st date, I would assume he’s either not interested or a cheapskate. A lot of guys complain that women just want a free meal so they don’t want to pay but these guys are still single, guaranteed lol Paying for the first date isn’t about getting a free meal, it’s the gesture that counts. I’ve picked up plenty 2nd date bills ;) Men here usually like to make a good impression on the ladies and I love them for that. However, Finnish men are so cute...why they gotta be like that? 😜😆

I met a finnish man on a trip an he was really rude like saying the food we were eating tastes like shit (his words) in a restaurant. He asked me for my company and I started being nice to him. Bad mistake! He didn't even offer to carry my shopping bags after shopping for our dinner. I have NEVER encountered a person with such bad manners in my life and I hope I never will.

Aleksi, that's not just a Finnish thing. Drunk men do stupid and gross things. Period. And sometimes they don't need to be drunk. A guy may decide to pick his nose when at his fiancee's parents' home for dinner simply because it's Wednesday and he hasn't done that task since Church last Sunday while at the Communion rail. Another universal truth is that if you want to know what to get a man of any age as a gift, go to the section of the toy department for 12-year-old boys. And I know a lot of otherwise well-behaved girls who can belch The Star-Spangled Banner and will do so at the drop of a hat and in any given situation. AND they can pick their nose after just painting their nails and not smear the paint job.
Finns should do themselves a favor and keep their population as homogenous as possible. That's the key to most of the good things you have going on in Finland. 😊

Using all of these Proper Adjectives raises a question of grammar. In English we capitalise words used to describe things from other countries, such as Finnish food or German citizen. but in many other languages adjectives of any sort are not capitalised. How does this work in Finnish? Thank you.
