I visited Finland for the first time in 1974. From 1981 to 1982 I lived in Finland, and I can confirm all the ten points of your presentation. Since I left Finland I met many Finns, and all of them were fantastic, friendly people. Nowadays my Finnish friends began to pass away, which makes me really sad, but I myself am not young anymore. Thinking about Finland always makes me feel well. Suomi on minun suosittu maa! Ystävällinen, kaunis, luotettava.

Your accent is cute and is with a genuine interest in topic. But i do not think the Finns are not very polite.. too often. Perhaps this has to do with cultural twists that you guys might not really pay attention to, but it has often been my observation.
As to National independence, it is very true and that is one reason i am proud to be the Finn.
Seems like the country that aligns perfectly with me. No ba. Trust is paramount. Awareness. Self reliance.
I was definitely Finnish in a past life - love the unique cultural aspects of Finns.
People in Finland are always asking me to stay at their home when I visit Finland. And making sandwiches for the bus rides...so much kindness.

When I've been to Finland I tried to speak finnish a bit (I keep on learning this language), like asking for directions or buying some tickets etc. It was really nice, when I said: "Anteeksi, en ymmärrän. Olen puolalainen ja puhun suomea vain vähän." and Finn answered something like:"Your finnish sounds good! That's amazing you speak it." I try to care about pronunciation, cause I love sound of this language - so it was really nice to hear that. I think that Finns are really friendly and sometimes you can be even talkative :D
On the other hand - I really appreciate, when it's ok to stay in silence with somebody. In Poland if you do not talk to the person you know (for example during you're in the same elevator for a while) it's a bit awkward. But I think it's ok to say nothing sometimes. Especially when you know, that small-talk will end up talking about weather or other bullshits.

You are very brave for trying to speak Finnish while you were there. I was so afraid of making mistakes and I felt like people didn't have time for me to form sentences and remember words. With my colleagues at work it was better and I managed to speak a bit, but when I was in a shop or something, it was enough for them to come back with a question I didn't understand and I would totally freeze, thinking "omg, I don't understand", so I switched back to English. So once again, well done to you! And I also agree with the second part of your comment. It's the same here in Romania and sometimes it's stressful, having to make small talk.

Finns are the only people with whom it is not embarrsssing being together and not talk at all.
My parents died when I was 2, and I was adopted not late after. My adopted parents moved me to America, where they were from. I recently found out I was adopted. I am finish and polish. Even though I never grew up in Finland I relate to most of the stuff on this list.
For Finnish people being good at something means that they have a Nobel prize on that subject or have won world championship or something... Maybe just ask what they like and you get your answer.
I thought that too. It can be easier to get to know the person and reduce the chances of them to think they would be bragging with their answer. Sometimes what we're good at may not be what we like 😂 and viceversa.
I am not from Finland but I feel like a Finn when I read this. It really makes sense to me.

I'm half Native American (Blackfeet) and half Fin. My parents had so much in common when they met that I'd hear about their language often growing up. Both languages sound identical but they have different meanings, like identical words. The Native Americans have teepees as do the Laplanders, and they take care of reindeer, living off the land, very much like my mother's people. How you said that Fins move out at an early age, very independent. Our Native side is very much different and similar to Japanese folks that stay at home taking care of the family. When the elders get old, they move in with their adult children, and taken care of the rest of their life. Elders are very much respected among our people. The respect you talked about is very much the same on both sides of my parents. Actually, both peoples are very much identical in those ways like the shyness, the quietness, the respect for others, the inviting people into the home to cook a nice meal for them, etc. I wish I could find more Native/Fin people. I don't think there's many of us out there but I heard there's a lot up in Alaska.
I love the humble and modest nature of Finns! In the humble/modest way they remind me of New Zealanders. Both fantastic people and countries - blessings from the USA.
As more as i know your culture, more i fall in love with this wonderfull land. I hope i can be there soon

Somewhat, but completely different in a-lot of ways, for example their culture on schooling, women’s rights, lgbtq+ their alot more different than similar
What I find works is to take a class or join a group where Finns are doing something you already do. I write and I sing as a hobby. I got involved in a writing group that has a number of Finnish Americans in it. People have no problem sharing creative energy. It all just flows.
I have been living there for one year and I absolutely loved it! I admired all the things mentioned, the vibe and the mindset. I guess I could blend in perfectly xD

@@AleksiHimself This video isn't recent, but I wanted to say, I used to go to Finland with work regularly and I really loved the people. The food is great, too. I love the qualities of the Finnish people, that you describe well. Yes, discreet yet hospitable, honest and well-behaved. I wish more nations had these qualities including my own (France). I also think Finnish people have a knack for good taste, not just minimalist stuff. Besides, I'm a fan of Jenni Vartiainen. Talented and classy, and I can't get enough of listening to Finnish lyrics.
I once had a Finn ask me if I were Finnish when I was at Heathrow airport. I think she was hoping to ask for help. I often wondered what characteristics she saw that made her think I might be. Now that I've watched this video. Even though I don't have the privilege to be Finnish, I do share a number of these characteristics. I would now be curious to visit Finland.

As a hardcore Mediterranean person, I was never able to connect with a Finnish person. Now I both know why and I’m perfectly ok with it.

But the qualities of a Finnish seem to be in diametric opposition to Mediterranean culture. We are warmer, more open, talkative, we connect easier, and, you know, we can be 5 minutes late without someone making a scene about it. So why would we try to connect with the Finns? Reserved, shy, socially awkward, cold. Byproducts of your weather and geography, sure, noone to blame, but why should someone make the effort?
I really think that globalisation made it seem like all people should somehow live together. We should respect each other and live in harmony, of course, but not all people are a match.

I'm from the Balkans, which is even more hardcore, but similar. I always hated those characteristics and felt like an outsider due to them. Finland sounds like a dream country due to a lot of things, but mostly due to my identity being the most similar to that of a typical Finn. However, there are some discrepancies, like still being a lone(ly) wolf without friends, and I'm open to being alone in Finland and having difficulties and maybe never find friends in my life, but that's my issue. It doesn't depend on the culture much, but on my own attitude, mental state and maturity, etc. But, I'd rather be alone in Finland than here. A lot of people say that is almost impossible to make friends in adulthood, as people already establish social circles, so... I guess Finns are more open to it and not faking they like you and let you hang out just because they should, without any substantial connection, which I also don't seek and need.

@@Diapontios Everything has the other side of the coin and not everyone is a in your face extrovert who needs to blabber all the time and expect others to be like them, as they do here, and you're ostracized if you are an introvert that doesn't need to talk about weather all the time and show off and bear a grin despite everything and stuff like that to be included. I don't know why you're trying to put me off by being skeptical of something that's my taste, while you praise the thing you like, even though I already explicitly said I don't.

I have family from Mikkeli and was supposed to visit Finland last summer for a month to visit Helsinki, Kuopio, Tamperee, and Mikkeli but sadly COVID prevented that. I have been traveling to Finland 🇫🇮 for the pass 5 years now love it….. yes fins do keep to themselves but me been Latin and from NYC 🗽 I just talk to everyone try to make friends and get them out of there comfort zone and it always work…

Finland was the best country I ever visited, it was 2012 during the Championship of Hockey in Helsinki. I got to experience some of it. I enjoyed a lot! It was expensive, but my finnish friends that hosted me helped me with that also :) Suomi on kalnis maa!!

There are some dark sides of Finland too, there are many men that get drunk and become aggressive, even among the higher social classes.

I see some of this traits in me, now I know where I got them. Took a heritage test and found out much to my surprise I have Finnish ancestry !
I'm an American and love Finland. No connection genetically, but I love the culture through having known children of immigrants to the United States. Also a huge fan of Sibelius. One of the things that I'd like to see on your channel is a Finnish Independence Day video. I have a feeling it's a big deal, and being in Helsinki for it is a dream for someday.
Also, re: bragging. As an American, my belief is that it's ok to tell people what you're good at as long as you're humble and willing to talk about all the things you're bad at, too. :P

As a fellow Finn about the hardship of making friends: I feel like there's a practical reason why Finns aren't actively looking for befriend with new people. Finns take things pretty seriously sometimes, so when you start calling someone _your friend,_ you've practically prepared to do anything for them. So you don't say it lightly. Just like you don't go around telling everyone you love them in Finnish, since _words have their weight._ If you're not prepared to marry the person, you won't say you love them. Another point about making friends with Finns is the fact that Finns don't do things just for the sake of doing it or because it's expected, but because it's practically needed. Think about smalltalk: zero new information gained so Finns don't do it. So, similarly, if you already have enough like-minded people in you life to feel socially engaged, you're not gonna look for new ones for no reason. Besides, you couldn't even quarantee you could schelude any time for more friends than you already have.
Started learning Finnish about three months ago, I really hope to visit - or perhaps even live in - Finland one day! It seems like an amazing place to be, full of amazing people. I love it’s history, and hate how it’s often ignored or taken out of the picture. I’ve met some very nice Finn’s as well, and now understand ‘Sisu’ very clearly, a lot of determination, for sure. I honestly admire it.

The punctuality is so me and my husband even jokes that I am on time like a Finn LOL. He’s Bulgarian and waits until the last minute to get ready and I am always stressed. He hates being five minutes early. If I am not five minutes early I feel as if I am late. LOL

It is funny to translate one Finnish custom directly into American culture. If you invite a friend over it is expected that you offer them coffee and some food. If you invite a very close family friend or family over, it is a given that you offer them coffee and pulla. But it is an insult if you don't offer them a sauna. Now if you were to translate this into American culture it would be like inviting your cousin over and saying, "Hi! Welcome! Here, have some coffee and cake. And oh yeah, go take a bath. If you want, I'll join you, naked, in a hot room."

I really like this points about finns. Never met finnish people, but I want to visit Finland and Im learning the language and reading about your history. You mentioned some traits that I've got but got me sometimes in troubles in germany. Don't be so honest. You're always on time. You have to do the smalltalk. Just talk highly about yourself and so on. It seems interacting with finns seems easier for me🙏 don't change. Keep it like this

I am born in Germany and both of my grand parents fled from Schlesien (today Poland) to Germany in the war. I do not feel like a german. There is still something missing. As a child I loved Sweden for some reason. Now I want to find out where my roots are and where I belong to. I can say that my brother is called "Finn" and that I find the finish language very beautiful. My mother has been living in Winnipeg, Canada for a while. People say I look Russian. Finnland convinced me most in the shortest time from the hearing. I like the values like directness. I feel too understood to be true. Looking forward to the journey.

I never thought of Koreans before, but I always saw Finns and Japanese people as soul mates even though the culture, language, climate and location are completely different. I can't really put my finger on it but it has something to do with the mentality I think. Politeness and humbleness when it comes to personal space and house rules is extremely important.

Agree for most parts of the friendship circle. Most of my friends are from school and even earlier. Sure there are some I met later, but even if I just see my old friends way less than new ones they still are more close than new friends
Also if you visit a Finnish home it's very likely that you are asked if you would want some coffee. If you are insecure about talking with a new person, take the coffee even if you aren't going to drink it. It's just something for your hands to do and if you get uncomfortable with the silence you can always take a sip of the coffee (or fake it if you don't somehow like coffee) to feel less akward with the silence
Went to Helsinki and loved it. Everyone was so nice and helpful. I am reminded of some of the ways Scots behave especially the highlanders. My lot really will put you down if you act too full of yourself, even if you are a world champion., and can be ridiculously friendly but still very private.

As born Finnish i learned enjoying about Nothingnes. Basikly, sometimes, being alone and doing Nothing. No tv, entertainment, reading etc. Best places ofcourse in nature. Time is biggest treasure, slower it goes ,. better.

I went to a Finnish concert in Canada. I heard that Finns were punctual so I left home with a 20 minute leeway. I ran into road construction with closures and got to the 7:30 concert at 7:30:31 and I was 31 seconds late. I had been going to concerts with my Russian friend and their 2:00 PM concerts would start at 2:40 or 3:10 and little old ladies at the back would talk through the whole thing. At a Finnish concert if you are talking two or three people will tell you to Shush and give you a Hard Stare. You must talk about the Finnish Hard Stare one time.
I have never been to Finland. Both sets of my grandparents were born in Finland, but being born in America I thought I was more American. Nope! I have always been asked why I am angry, or grumpy because of my silence. My friends actually call me "the safe" because if I am told to keep a secret, it will go with me to my grave. Also if a friend asks an opinion question, I have learned to ask if they actually want my answer, or not because even that will be the truth (sometimes that's a problem with the ladies, but so is the whole "not talking" thing). And I'll be damned if I said 3:30 pm, I didn't mean 3:35! Although I do prefer American food. Also, I was informed at a very young age that the only reason you would ever touch, or get in the personal space of, another person was if you're fighting or f****ng.

I work for a Finnish company and I love this. They talk exactly about what we need to talk and not a lot of mumbo-jumbo in between. That's what I call efficiency. I don't like the "beating around the bush" style that the Americans have for example.

This will come in handy when I plan my trip to Helsinki 💙💙I love how much equality Finland has. The education system is top notch. Mothers and the elderly is looked after very well. Free healthcare. Many good social programs. The only strange thing is when getting a ticket from a police officer. The cost of ticket goes by your salary and there is not a set price like here in the States.

@@AleksiHimself Yes-- northern Michigan here; lots of Finns in the Upper Peninsula. My family is of Finnish descent; great-grandma moved here with family in the 1930s and their last name was Mallönen. I love my Finnish heritage and can't wait to visit someday!
I'm from the Upper Peninsula and I'm 70% Fin. My grandparents and mom are 100% fin and have a LOT of family still in Finland.
I lived In Italy for some 18 months. I kissed the VERY soil of Helsinki-Vantaa airport when I returned to Finland. It is awesome to buy a loaf In a finnish grocery store without being robbed by the grocer! Love Finland❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I am a Helsinki born California resident who rides a bicycle between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach on a daily basis. I occasionally find wallets during the weekends. But I think there are also some Finns, maybe not so many, who sometimes say stuff they don't mean. If you say something, but then act in a way that doesn't support what you said, maybe you didn't mean it in the first place.
I'm a bit different Finn. :P Of course there are people that are different compared to the ones described in this video. Every country has.

? Honesty makes what i am, and i can get silent much when i don't have anything to say, unlike people who are so stressed when they have blank in their conversations. I'm less egocentric than i was before :), just being "happy" about what i do in music for ex! Just have to do a DNA test to know if some Finnish deer is running in my veins hehe! x) Great video!! I was raised by woman but my dad learned me galantery :P! Mom learned me everything about punctuality, btw i finished my studies last year, i was 27! x)

about the directness, that also goes widely for germans and people from the other scandinavian countries. just drop the important things that need to be said and have casual talk afterwards instead the other way round.

I met a Finnish girl while I was shopping a few months back. She was a student here in Jonesboro at Arkansas state University. She said she was here to run track. She was very nice & we talked just fine. Her English was very good. I had no idea she was Finnish until she told me

You usually can't, but the Finns abroad are very different than the Finns in Finland, they'll act completely different in most situations otherwise.

I had this colleague who moved from Northern Finland down here to Australia and I thought I should make him enjoy settling in so I suggested we meet up at a pub for some drinks drinks. I ordered the first round and as Finns enjoyy their clear liquor I included cpl vodka shots. I proceeded to raise a glass and said 'cheers mate'. The finn looked at me for a few seconds. Then he said 'Did we come here to drink or to chat?'

I'm from Sweden and your description of Finland seems no different than how it's like in Sweden.
I know Sweden pretty well, even if I know Finland better, and I can say that there are some big differences between the two nations. Swedes are not hospitable, compared to Finns, much more difficult to make friends, are often condescending and patronizing, they make you feel you are inferior to them, which the Finns don't.
Finnish Americans are the same, 🤔👍 I have met people that moved from other areas of the country and later told me they were afraid of people. We don't just walk around smiling at people or talk to strangers often.😐 We think we're respecting their privacy and they think we're rude. 😄👍🇫🇮 Great video.🌟🌟🌟🌟
I am greman on my dad's side of the family and norwagain on my moms side with some I am 6th generation american but I wish I was raised in finnland it sounds like a great place to be brought up in

When I went there I did not understand why they told us just that. Probably because I am ill-accustomed and I take security for granted. Or possibly "some" is simply a direct translation of the Finnish partitive. Knowing a language with a total object?
