The best thing about subtitles is that you still hear the original language of the original actors. It doesn't even matter if you understand the language or not, all languages sound interesting and beautiful in their own ways. In a good production, the actors are professionals and thus their voices are definitely a big part of their acting as well. If you simply dub over it, you lose half of the original work not only the actors put in but also what the director of the movie wanted. Not to mention, if a movie is located in ancient China, it most certainly is a more wholesome experience if the characters are speaking in Chinese, not in some other, totally random language.
I don't really need subtitles with English language titles, but I'm happy I could grow up listening to Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, or Christopher Lee sound like they should sound, not like some random dude dubbing over their voices.

Subtitles on everything is one of the reasons why Finnish people are usually quite good at languages. It helps to learn the language, and also when you have subtitles you know how different words are written etc.
Also, the number 1 reason people move to Finland from abroad is actually love. Most people with foreign background moved here due to having a Finnish spouse, and obviously Finland is extremely supportive of families with children so it's just a no-brainer for those couples to raise their kids in Finland (I mean, the state pays you monthly for each kid until they reach the age of 18 so why would you raise them elsewhere). :)
Until they are 17 but yeah, and the schools are good.
Even tho it's not the state that pays for education and stuff, but every individual in the society who pays taxes. Group power ;)

In Germany, as long as you go to school/uni or doing an apprenticeship you get children‘s money until 25. and yes you can also get students money on top of that

I’m Swedish and quite happy with Swedish quality of stuff, but Fiskars is the best. If you find anything made by Fiskars it will be the best you can get.
Fiskars axes are great. If you ever have to chop wood (kesämökki, sommerstuga, summer cottage), highly recommended.

Getting either less or more patriotic about your home country; I moved to Finland from the US when I met my husband, and watching Trump has definitely made me happy that I moved here. 😂
I watch everything with subtitles now because it's helping me learn Finnish. The only time it's a problem is when we're watching a film in English and they switch to speaking another language and the subtitles are still in Finnish. I get lost very quickly.

You're videos are very educating as I learn more about the country and you are 100% correct when you said that you will want to move more and more. Im a finnish 17 year old person who is finnish and has moved to china. My mom moved to china for work and because im not an addult I had to follow. There are good things in china for sure like the food and almost everything being cheep but this country has a lot of problems compared to finland. Being away from finland has taught me to love my country even more and not a day goes by i dont think about home. I just cant wait to get back.

@@user-io5qu1go8m if you look up, there is probably many different childrens books in Finnish from some websites, but keep in mind Finnish is incredibly hard, so try to find a teacher for yourself it's very important, you can also replace words in Finnish when you're talking or you can take stick notes and put them around your house and write the Finnish word on the note and stick it to an item, that helps you remember certain objects! I wish you best of luck

It's too cold in Finland. Summer lasts 2 days and 90% of those it's going to rain.
@@Xerdoz Finland has a single month of real, solid summer, July, and most years there isn't too much rain in July. In fact often there's too little for gardeners. But of course if your definition of summer is over 30C, then 2 days might be about right. Most people don't need that high a temperature, though.

I can relate to your comment about Fiskars scissors. They are the best in the world and that's it. I bought a pair of German-made scissors some three years ago. I thought that Germans use to make quality stuff, so why not. That was a mistake - they are in the trash, while the 20-plus year-old Fiskars equivalent is just still going strong. They have never been sharpened since purchase.
There is also a legendary company called Savotta which makes really high quality backbags. Finnish defence forces uses Savotta backbags and they are really well made!
The 24th is for dinner with one part of the family + presents, the 25th is for dinner with the other part of the family, mothers and fathers side practically
The subtitles are one the reasons English is so good and widespread in Finland. They are there on every English-language show and they help the learning process immensely. It was a very wise decision to use them instead of dubbing (like in France and Germany). But you can turn them off in the TV settings. A little more difficult than Netflix and HBO, but still possible.
Being in the same boat as you (Married 5 years this August to a Finnish girl) I can say it's changed me for the better. We're actually moving to Finland later this year in pursuit of a better quality of life. I'm also learning Finnish as my wife's grandparents and her Father don't speak English and I want to be able to talk with them. TBH I can't wait to get there!
I enjoy my trips to abroad but everytime I get home to Finland I enjoy the little things, like having a shower and getting a constant flow of water which stays at same temperature all the time and the quiet and soundproof home and also even temperature in home even if there is -30C outiside, the forests, lakes etc.. also the relatively good hygiene even in gas station toilets (which tends to be cleaner than many toilets in malls BTW)

A "good Perkele" on well placed spot is not only empowering, but also incredible instant stress relief. Usually this is on failure or near failure / tinkering or overcoming exhaustion on some task (wood chopping to the point when your hands don't really work properly anymore, but you ain't done)
I was not patriotic about my country in the first place so when I meet my partner I research about Finland and I became less patriotic practicing finish planning to move there after I'm done with my studies. I'm from Puerto Rico

I gotta say, your Finnish is very good! All I would work on if I were you is the timing and tone of voice (even though they are pretty much perfect already). I know Finnish can be a hard language to learn but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. Especially when you can shorten and change some words with slang that pretty much everyone understands. I don't know what else to say but your Finnish is very good. Keep up the good work Dave! Your Finnish is improving a lot and it shows.

Also, as much as I do like Arabia's products myself (I also moved all of my Finnish stuff abroad just like Cat did), they are made in China nowadays unfortunately but, they still try to keep the quality of the product better than your generic Ikea dishes.
Oh really? That's interesting. The quality is still fantastic. All our IKEA dishes we bought are collecting dust since we got some Arabia stuff!
I was actually wrong with China (I think they used to make them there as well at some point). They are made in Thailand and Romania now. The last time they made anything in Finland was in 2016 when the last factory closed permanently. Quality control still stayed in Finland which is probably why they are still fairly high quality products.

You're too lovely. I myself born in Sweden by Swedish father and Karelian mother and I love everything English and Finnish. Had I been able I had taken my pick and pack and moved to england and lived there for at least 5 years to feel freedom and love and ended my days in Finland where i always felt at home. My current economy puts an end to it unfortunately.

It’s crowded and for me a bit surreal.
But it is nice to light a candle for the loved ones.
Your pronouncing is really good, but i think that the common mistake with foreigners speaking finnish (especially people whose motherlanguage is english) is that they tend to "prolong" words and certain letters, like when you're saying "perkele", you say it like "pherkhele". Finnish language is as "blunt" as it gets :). We literally say the words exactly the same way as we write them, so if you learn to pronounce every letter, you'll speak perfect finnish in no time when you're reading something. But your finnish is already so good that there's no point in worrying about it because everyone can understand what you're saying, and trust me not everyone can do it ;D.
It's a bit off topic but:
If you wanted a finnish person (who doesn't speak english) to read your name and pronounce it right you'd write your name "Deiv Khäd" ^^
I get what you mean with the "prolonging". I'm trying to teach my American fiance Finnish, and he's putting too much air behind his p's and t's and he *H A T E S* having to say a word that has an h in the middle. Like vihreä. The h turns into that throaty French hghghhg you know?
Do not worry about you Finnish pronunciation, This is hard language and you are doing great! We are delightful when we hear foreigners to speak Finnish! Really would like to offer you a beer and chit chat, but you are quite busy guy?

Some channels have burned-in subtitles, some send them separately and can be toggled. At least YLE tends to have toggleable subtitles.
I also swear in Finnish without being Finnish nor living in Finland. The words just sound nicer than the words we have here in the Netherlands. And of course still nobody know what I'm saying. That's mostly why I do it. I hope I can move to Finland someday, this country is getting overful and I don't want to know how it will look like in the future. I'm already learning the language bit by bit. Small steps like figuring out that "with the train" is just: juna+lla= junalla. And the first thing you said in this video I fully understood. Hopefully I will be able to learn some more things about Finland on your channel. Kiitos!

Yep definitely Finnish-made things are better, especially pots and pans from Hackman. When I moved to the UK I brought a Hackman frying pan from home and it's so much better than any other pan we have. My flatmates all started to use mine because the other ones are so bad😂
Hackman has, unfortunately, gone downhill as well lately. Some of the stuff is being made in China and those might not be quite as durable as they used to be.
Offenbach is the best of the bests. Swedish product with pots. Victorinox are much better with blades. And i am happy finnish ppl.
