BigScreen Beta is my favorite, because of the social aspect. I gifted my sister a Quest 3, and I have a grip of 4K movies, both 3D and flat. I hosted the room and invited her to watch Ready Player One in 3D in the theatre environment. She joined, sat right next to me, while we watched . We were able to talk to each other and had a really nice time. She was blown away that we could watch a movie together, while in two different locations. One of my favorite things to do with the Quest 3. Great video! Meta needs to double down on TV/Movie streaming services, and get the Google Play Store to install Android apps, and the Quest 3 would be one of my all time favorite devices. I think it's Google that is not allowing it, like they did with youtube app for the AVP.
Thanks for watching. And yes Bigscreen with other people is just a pure fun experience. Keeping my fingers crossed for more expansion of the OS. The AVP shaking things up has been good for the industry
How does it work? I tried it with my brother and we just can stream any content. If this is a local file the app wants him to find this file on his local file system. UA-cam is also asks us to have the same subscription and region (I'm in EU, he's in the US). So we tried a few ways to watch the same content by streaming and it just didn't work.
I'm disappointed that 'Bigscreen' doesn't have a Netflix App. My PC has died on me so I can't use streaming from a PC. Do you think Bigscreen will be getting a Netflix App of its own? I do hope so
I like the originality dude, I am creating a channel and the fact that you got 1k subs so quickly by being original with the video introduction, development and editing makes me more confident.
Thank you! And go for it dude! Making videos in your normal voice and doing things you want makes it much easier to create. Best of luck! Don’t lose that confidence, what people watch fluctuates, showing up matters more than you think! 👊🏽
@@TheConstruct_VR I think doing it for you first, then viewers because some youtubers have gone bonkers trying to keep up with expectations from those subbed and patreons. Just dont drive yourself crazy, your health and family is first.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned 4XVR, which, like SkyBox, allows local file browsing, but can play 3D Blu-ray ISO files straight from your network. Quality is unmatched to anything else.
I feel like the apps on app lab don’t get the proper attention. This vid was specific viewer requested feed back on these 3 apps. I should have mentioned that.
@@MamaMia84oo7yes, exactly. You install smb servers or other network media sharing services and you can discover files from your PC just by having your headset connected to the same network. It’s amazing!
SkyboxVR is the best. Small price to pay for all the neccessary options and supported file formats. 3D SBS and OU videos work like a charm and there is no push of the social component. Also, having a home NAS it is a breeze to watch all of my video collection via saved network share connection. Bigscreen is good, but main intent was on social aspect and you can feel it throughout the app. I started using both, but SkyboxVR in the end sticked due to simplicity of use.
Yeah I can totally see that. Sometimes just having a clean UI with crispy resolution is all you need. The extra stuff can just be distracting or taken way from the experience
Nothing beats VD + PC, I own almost all VR players and there are BIG reasons why I prefer VD to all the players out there, 3rd for playing native ISO without ripping and 2nd the biggest factor being multichannel Dolby audio and 1st and foremost being able to interpolate to 60/72 fps. With double the fps I'm able to reduce SDE as well as bit of graininess if any at all. After watching movies with double/triple framerate one just cant go back to native 24fps.
@@abakash9 I hear u VD just does so much more I launch it daily for one reason or another. Skybox is my close 2nd though. Being able to plug in a usb drive to the headset and watch on the go is pretty useful
If you know much about real debrid whether using kodi or stremio. Real debrid support webdav as does skyboxvr. Using these two together you can watch almost anything. Large 20gb+ files 4k/1080p. Just streaming as fast as your net will provide
Bigscreen for social 4xvr for watching anything alone as it's the only app that can play full 3d movies in ISO format. Virtual desktop for browsing your PC files like images, or gaming
Best thing about this video is you tiptoeing around the certain content that you can find online or have local. 😁 Keeping it family friendly. Good stuff. Few comments here. I'm on the Bigscreen camp. It's free, it's easy to pick up and just ready to use without having to worry about connecting to a pc. The social piece was unexpectedly a great option. Watching events with ppl around the world is a blast. I own virtual desktop and it's great for the reason you already explained. No reason to pick up Skybox. That occasional lagging you mentioned with Virtual desktop is a pain at times. It'll run smooth and then it won't. Lastly, shoutout to you for watching About Time. LOL....easily one of the best shick flicks for dudes. It's a must watch.
Thanks for watching and spending some time here in the comments. Yes I think we all know what hidden folders are for 😉 lol. Bigscreen is an awesome catch all and free is hard to beat. I had to get About Time on my local. It’s SO dude compatible. I throw it on as an easy reminder not to take life too seriously. As a husband and dad , life can feel quite 💩. At times but we have to look out for the good stuff 💪🏽
Was trying to decide between this and the quest 2 as the price is so good now but think it has to be the 3 just for the mixed reality aspect alone, looks awesome. Main thing I was even going to get VR for was sim racing but honestly I think I can see myself actually mainly using it to watch films on lol, im a big movie guy & this just looks so cool to kick back and smoke up and invite friends from across the world to a virtual cinema :D
little update finally got it and its absolutely awesome, watched some random 3d movies in public rooms on bigscreen, really cool. Meta really should be leaning into the whole movie thing with their marketing tbh its a good selling point. Edit: I must say though the "Vr derealization" really hit me hard lol, all day Ive been getting moments that my hands look and feel fake for a second, like they genuinely look and feel fake when i'm holding my phone and not moving my thumbs much, reminds me of when I got too high one time as a kid lol, even my computer screen keeps looking like its floating like the moveable screens in VR and for a second I actually tried grabbing it like I was in VR at one point, probably made even worse by the fact im always smoking too lmao, next few weeks are gonna feel strange I guess till I'm used to it :D
Hello thanks for this review I’m waiting for my q3 I’m very excited to test, it’s really a new way for watching movies, thanks for you work ; a new member from France ;-)
I love Bigscreen Beta! Doing regular Anime Nights with a Friend. Sitting next to each other and talking with him like he sits next to me in the real World (at least close to that, its still VR after all xD) and talk about the Day, the Stuff we are watching etc is such a cool thing! He lives kinda far away so this App shines even more! Having that App for free is mindblowing! MR in some Way would be cool tho!
It’s so cool when more people get together and enjoy the tech for what it’s for! Great to hear this! Honestly, me and the guys would get on Xbox live and it was less about playing the games and more about catching up! Haha
You wondered aloud why one might have the screen so big. I’ve tried to remember to do that more often - specifically for film epics. If it’s a sci fi film, that scale transforms the experience. Highly recommended in certain circumstances. It’s like a theater or IMAX experience.
The head lock in virtual desktop is weird with the delay, but you can turn the delay off in the settings and just keep the screen fixed in the same place in your field of view. Best way to watch something in passthrough if you need to walk around and look in different directions
Nice! I’ll try it out. I don’t mind moving away from the screen if I walk around or turn my head… but there should totally be like a way to make the screen small and down to the right like PIP mode.🤔 thanks for the tip
Loving your content lately, won't be surprised if you cross 50k by end of 2024. A light feedback, you can probably place the camera behind your monitor so you don't have to frequently turn to look at it. Watching the sudden movements in the VR capture are a bit jarring. Another way I've seen content creators address this by using picture in picture.
Thank you for the nice video! Sadly, watching video in Virtual Desktop is still choppy, but to me that's not its main selling point, that would be that it allows you to play SteamVR and Oculus PCVR games without changing apps. Many people, including me, think that Virtual Desktop performs even better than Oculus Link in this regard.
@@ack0x06 yeah viewing local videos directly from the virtual desktop menus is all bad. I don’t have any issues with the streaming services though! VD adds a LOT of value to your quest. I prefer it over Steam link and quest link currently
@@TheConstruct_VR thanks lol. the quality of your videos are really great, im honestly surprised youve been posting videos for only a month. great work and cant wait to see what other vids you post!
This is one of few reviewers which I watched from beginning to end! Great and comprehensive overview of the ecosystem! I have skybox and bigscreen. Virtual Desktop seems to be a must though given I want to to mirror my PC.
@@westmcgee9320 nice. I’m holding out for a more refined / affordable iteration of the AVP. The AVP does entertainment better I think. For quest it’s just a great bonus… VR is really its strength. There’s some good stuff coming through for this super affordable headset though. I’ll be sharing it
Love the detailed breakdown and thoughtful use case considerations. Did not love the repeated head-turning to the camera, which made the VR image jump from side to side. I think it's the first time I've felt a little queasy watching a UA-cam video (that wasn't shot off a crazy tall structure). Maybe you put a camera above your virtual space (or in the middle of it) rather than turning to the camera, which doesn't add anything when we can't see your face. Hope this comes across as constructive because I think you're a really solid content creator.
@@johncornwell1026 yeah this video was from a while back. I haven’t done it since. I was just getting the channel going. But hey… it’s awesome that you took the time to comment. Especially after getting motion sickness. You could have just clicked away. Seriously THANK YOU. Rest assured there only like one other video like this on the channel. 👍
You can turn off ham tracking in the settings menu of virtual desktop it's on the left hand side in one of the options and there's a tick box which says hand tracking
Very nice video. Thank you. I just got a meta quest 3 and am loving it. Going to go with big screen since it’s free and I can use a lot of its features without having a PC
I just load local files from bigscreen, I'm too cheap, lol. With the pass through of my Quest 3 I'm am tempted to get one with that. I actually use the youtube app now that it has pass through. Putting up a screen when washing dishes or cleaning is really nice. I never thought I'd ever use pass through on a headset but now that there is one that is 'good enough' I get the appeal. This is the one thing that the next 'pro' headset should have, exactly like the Quest 3 but with eye/face tracking and better pass through cameras. And same body so I can use whatever strap I want.
that UA-cam update! Man I feel people are sleeping on that. It’s so good! I’m looking forward to the new hardware to come … especially with the “open” os
big screen tried. Not ok to play mkv half SBS. always asking to install codecs or anything while everything is installed. or when playing it, it shows the movie 4/3 skybox VR is the top for me to play video. It plays everything :D It's like a VLC for VR :D
I've mostly given up on watching movies in VR because of the judder due to the mismatch on FPS between the movie and the headset. The judder is most noticeable in action sequence or panning the camera. I wish there was a player that had frame interpolation built in.
72 or 120 fps should both work well for movies, as most are filmed at 24 fps, and 72 and 120 both divide evenly by 24. Most UA-cam videos are going to at 30 or 60 fps, so 120 fos mode will be best for those.
Hey, fantastic video. Do you recommend buying the headset just for media consumption? I really want a big screen with good resolution. I know the Quest 3 is not 4k but does the youtube, netflix etc… support 4k with using these apps or maybe their own apps? And also is the screen really huge? Thanks
Great question some apps are better than others for example the stock Netflix app doesn’t do high resolution but if you pull up Netflix in the quest browser it’s super crispy. I wouldn’t get hung up on the numbers (4k or not) but there are apps that can deliver a super sharp display. If you can’t use something that requires a PC just streaming from the browser in the quest is great. Where you can turn the resolution in UA-cam for example. Check out the spatial TV video on this channel too. Yes the screen can get really big. It does actually feel like you’re sitting in a theater.sharpness of the image does diminish if you have a 4k stream stretched out to look loke a 200 inch screen, just be aware of that. So for $499 it’s still a good option for media consumption also watching 3d movies is built in (you can rent them in the big screen app) these things cost more than $500 in real life. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I say try it and you can always use that return window 😄
I love all posted here. Virtual Desktop so I can run my pc games. Skybox is good but I love more social. Bigscreen by far my favorite. Be it playing movies in my library or showing a movie from my paid services like Prime. When I run a movie I like to give the people full experience like they were actually in a movie theater. I get a few up coming trailers and run that before the movie and I also have those old “Don’t forget to visit the snack bar or no talking please”, during the movie. Also don’t forget to put trash where it belongs on the way out 😊
💯Haha yeah I love it. Back in 2020 this as pure magic for social. Then it’s like hey why don’t we do this more often!? Being able to watch a movie and chat with a friend that you wouldn’t be able to is where this tech really pays off
Thanks for showcasing the Skybox VR, my dood. There wasn't a free trial so I don't know if I can have - not just DLNA server - but also shared folders from my PC, the app has been great. Almost devastated cause I thought I had to buy that $30 4xvr app, and I'm glad I can put that $20 to something else
I liked BigScreen for years, but now they don't rent movies out, so SKybox wins for me. For DRM, I use Firefox and disable hardware acceleration in Firefox settings. Never fails.
Nice video, thanks. I like Virtual Desktop and BigScreen, I like BigScreen theater better than others and the option to select the seats, the laying down angle option, but unfortunately with earphones doesn't work well, and would be nice if you could visit any website.
Great video but the way you kept turning your head to the right as if to talk to the camera was giving me motion sickness with the constant movement on the right hand screen.
Yeah, thanks for struggling through it. It was before I knew what I was doing here on the UA-cam. I haven’t done it since! I need to make an updated version of this video… so many cool things have launched since this vid
TBH I'm having video quality issues with Bigscreen. Haven't tried Virtual Desktop so Skybox VR is my personal favourite. It feels more polished than Bigscreen.
Yeah same. I would align. With you here the ONLY reason I end up using virtual desktop more is because I can pull up any streaming service on my desktop and the image through VD is still super sharp. Skybox loses me with being just for local files. I wish I could at least sign into UA-cam
I went with Skybox as when I am watching movies I don't like company. I was surprised at how easy it was to stream from my PC. Now I need a decent Quest 3 audio solution as the bass just ain't there.
Nice! There’s some pretty decent in-ear low latency buds out there. They use a dongle so you don’t get any Bluetooth latency. I won’t mention a brand google around there’s plenty to pick from. Thx for watching!
One thing about Bigscreen Beta is you can’t view the movies lying down as you can with Skybox VR and Virtual Desktop. But I think for smooth playback I want to choose Skybox VR.
@@TheConstruct_VR I’m using 4XVR and it’s free from the App Lab, image is crystal clear and 120hz head movement. Not sure if 4XVR has a lying down mode though.
I love BigscreenVR. It is the best of them for virtual environments. Along with Skybox, it has the sharpest looking picture. One drawback is that it supports less decoders. Like strangely my Beatles - 'Get Back' series audio won't work in BigscreenVR which goes for all 5.1 audio encoding. But it's FREE! Next: almost for free is Skybox. $10.00 and the best video player. As crisp as BigscreenVR but more decoders and plays (decodes to stereo) 5.1 audio. I also own Heresphere VR player. It's $30.00. It can do some odd things, that can come in handy, but the pix is not as clear and sharp as Skybox and BigscreenVR (despite having a sharpness fader) no streaming feature and did I say...it's $30 bucks! I also demo'd 4XVR. It's pix is not clear either because I guess it along with Heresphere use open source codecs (directshow decoders). The 4XVR is also $30.00 I think. It will stream from a USB source like a flash thumb drive or external SSD. Skybox will do that also! That's nice because you don't need a computer running to stream external videos to your Quest. For what it's worth, if your one of those who want to stream from a USB device and run and charge your Quest3 at the same time, I bought an inexpensive solution and it works well. www.amazon.com/stores/Aceele/page/88C7B422-67BD-4AA4-AD98-762C61FE8D7B?ref_=ast_bln&store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto (I bought mine from Amazon) You'll also need a more powerful PSU. I bought this one. www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCD8GP9J?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details So it's a no brainer for which two players to own. Also last note, The Airscreen PC/Mac app for streaming to Skybox will stream DLSM (whatever the letters are) and BigscreenVR also has that feature. I'm wondering if BigscreenVR will accept the Skybox app. Something to try out ! EDIT - I tried it and BigscreenVR does see the running Skybox Airscreen app. You can navigate through your directory of folders you saved in the app, but the actual file will not show. Oh well then. I wanted to cover some things Jason did not have time to cover. Thanks for the fine vid Jason.
Thanks Barry! There’s so much to cover the UsB access is Huge! Im loving skybox these days just the quick start aspect of it all. When you have media on a drive or network.
Interesting for gaming virtual desktop is more crispy than airline in my opinion. I notice a slight screen door effect using airline. I think they limit bitrate to ensure performance so not totally a bad thing. But for movie watching in the oculus home I can see that being a solid video experience.
Yeah man! Doing a separate video on it. This video was actually subscriber request. I do wonder if the environment reflection really matters as much as people seem to think. 🤔
The fact that streaming companies make it so difficult to enjoy full quality (1080/1440/4k) shows and movies on the headset directly through their inbuilt app just kinda kills these VR headsets for me. They’re plenty okay with me pulling up their app on a TV and watching 4k content, but yet netflix is 480p, and some services don’t even work because of DRM issues. What the fk.
I use Skybox on my Quest3 when I want to watch movies and on my PC I have Plex installed. In Plex I have several folders: one for my TV-series and others for the different types of movies and documentaries. But I have also the option to watch movies with the Riftversion of Skybox and watch the movies locally (I do that with movies which are not streamed by Plex, like UA-cam movies that I stored or VR movies. On my Pico4 I have the program Moon VR. I use the passthrough if I can. Like Virtual Desktop as well, but it is not my favorite.
In virtual desktop if you don't finalize your click on moving the screen to its destination it will stay locked in place like the rokid ar glasses, staying in your view. I do that instead of accepting the head tracking location, as you've stated its pretty slow.
Great overview! I like Bigscreen but for some reason they still (I think 3 years on) don't support some audio codecs, so some shows and movies on my Plex server don't work. Skybox just works flawlessly in that regard though, so if I feel like watching something I own then I just use skybox but if I want to be social I jump into bigscreen.
One of the few viewers that prefers skybox! It really is a crispy simple solution. I should have mentioned USB support. Not bad for travel and any offline situations.
@@kurtcrean exactly I feel like skybox is for users like you. At first glance it looks dull but it’s because you don’t have the specific needs it solves
@@user-zc9zt2vl5s yes. Results may vary across them. But they all support 3d. The easiest thing for you to check out is 3d trailers in Bigscreen or VRChat. It’s free so you can get a feel for it. Skybox and virtual desktop will play your 3d movie files if you have some
What killed Bigscreen for me and made me move to Skybox is that the files that I "found" don't have to be re-encoded. Bigscreen supports a lot fewer codecs leading to lots of files not playing properly
I even ran into codec issues ( like i mentioned in the video ) with Virtual Desktop. Skybox wins hands down for local files. You can even plug a USB into the side of the headset when you travel
Of the ones you've shown here Virtual Desktop is my favourite. I use it all the time for entertainment and gaming. Headlock (where the screen moves slowly with your head) is great for moving from room to room. I am always in passthrough, and often walk around, get coffee, wash the dishes and so on, with the headset on. Headlock is great for this as entertainment then follows me to the next room at which point I disable headlock when stationary. You can disable hand interactions in the menu, which I've done, as I tend to click on the desktop accidentally while washing the dishes, cooking or gaming on a controller. When I do feel like spending time with other people watching movies I prefer VRChat. There are many movie rooms to choose from, and any of the worlds with TVs I stream directly from my laptop. Bigscreen vs VRChat is probably more a question of where the majority of your friends are comfortable hanging out. For productivity I use immersed for the multi monitor support. Great comparison video.
Very much looking forward to learning from this nice fellow. However, by turning toward the camera to look at us from time to time it creates a lot of (eventually) disorienting movement on the split screen. Perhaps one day, he will fix that.
Already fixed. 🙂 Looking at the camera is a hard habit to break. I realized it’s not adding much value either to have a split screen of me in a headset.. So when split I’ll be talking to camera independent of the headset footage. 👍🏽Thanks for watching and welcome to the construct!

Although I prefer VD to any VR players out there but if you really have to use skybox then buying Quest Game Optimizer is must. Having said that VD + PC is superior to any VR players out there by huge margin.
Where bigscreen fails for me is the resolution. especially if you watch 3D videos at high resolution. The best video experience for me is hands down skyboxvr. Especially because you can adjust a lot of 3d settings, watch up to 8K resolution youtube ( no other app can do that) , you can supersample your resolution to 2 times the resolution. I mean there is no competition, Skybox vr is the best for solo viewing. If you want social experience bigscreen is the best but then you have to watch crappy 1080p 3D video
Yeah I’m not sure why the movie content is so low res in bigscreen. Its frustrating. I noticed that UA-cam has better resolution than the streaming apps in there.
I had never heard of Skybox VR but I have seen it in the Meta Store. I love BigScreen but hate the avatars. I have Virtual Desktop and did not know all of this, but that makes sense now. So, yeah BigScreen all the way with friends. Too bad Altspace is gone because we would watch movies over there all the time and never used BigScreen.
@@lamekaalston3086 yeah Altspace was a vision of the future … too bad some of these apps can’t stand the test of time. Skybox is great for local files if you’re the “setting up your own NAS” kind of person. Thanks for watching!

@@TheConstruct_VR It was not meant to be a slight on you. Your content is great, it was just a bit hard to watch. But the information you presented was super valuable!
Thanks! I worked around it by just not having hand tracking on at all and sitting the controllers down. I’ll check for that setting too so I can keep hand tracking in the Quest OS.
I have all 3 and my fav is skybox, it connects to my nas full of 3d content which big screen also does but I love watching films on a wall in passthrough.
@@bamber119 awesome. I want to do it just because of data streaming limits. My kids watch the same movies 100 times a week. No need to be streaming that from the services
@@joostbakker well it means instead of clogging your smartphone with films or a massive media library then you can watch them on your dlna streamed through a nas. I’m assuming that’s what you’re asking? Now if you’re asking about using a smartphone as a dlna server then that depends on size of library and storage on your smartphone. If you’re using something like 64gb storage for a dlna library on a smartphone then you’re as well setting up a memory stick and plugging into your headset.
I like Bigscreen for the way it has to render a theatre and the lighting effect while you watch a video but what I dislike is that it doesn't have a web browser where you can for example open Netflix or whatever. I don't like its virtual desktop connection, it doesn't work well
@@Aviator-ce1hl I agree, a browser is becoming almost required these days. What’s odd is that the streaming services included are clearly just browser instances. It seems they’ve left this out on purpose. One nice workaround in Bigscreen and skybox is that they allow UA-cam login. I’m a premium/youtube TV subscriber so I get to watch movies included on Max and any available through UA-cam. It’s the best we have for now. Thanks for watching
@TheConstruct_VR Yes, I could watch a movie that was on UA-cam and strangle full. It was really nice. Of course, we can watch Netflix or anything else using the Quest 3 browser (weird there is not an app for it), but I miss the theatre environment. I used Virtual Desktop, but you need the PC on, and the environment doesn't have a dynamic lighting effect, which is really a huge plus
@@Aviator-ce1hl yeah I think that’s why I like spatial TV so much. (Check out the videos here on the channel if you haven’t already. It’s a browser and it has the lighting effects in your own room. The reason why the video does not play smooth is because the bitrate is too high and the codec. You need to convert the video to H264 or codec the Software supports. with a lower rate.
You rock! I knew it was something logical. Not sure it’s worth it given that most of the time I’m just playing a file from the desktop itself. I don’t have any VR or 3D files that have the issue.
What quest 3 is missing is OLED displays for VR cinema , only reason i do not want to invest further , i have quest 2 already and movie watching on quest 2 is pathetic experiance to say the least becoz of Fresnel optics and screendoor effect ! i go back to Sony hmz/Goovis headsets etc or my regular TV for watching movies
@@mrnigam4486 yes OLED would be nice but you shouldn’t look at quest 2 to give you any indication of what quest 3 lenses look like. It’s a night and day difference in my opinion. Not OLED though… perhaps quest 4 🤞
I had a totally different experience with Bigscreen. Couldn’t get any video to work and UA-cam just displayed a black screen for all videos. The only videos that would play is locally stored videos.
The one benefit that virtual desktop has over the other two that I think is the only one that does it is that you can listen to your pc sound from your pc rather than from the headset so you can use higher quality sound from your pc with headphones whilst watching the image streamed from your pc and I don't think Skybox to do that. Virtual desktop is also very good for wireless streaming games and basically integrates with steam vr and you can play your games and the speed is very good but in order to get support from the discord group they will probably want you to revert to previous graphics driver but I found virtual desktop to be an excellent option although I still at the moment use steam vr itself to play games that are mod demanding but virtual desktop will do that too I tried skybox vr but it doesn't have the same sound option that virtual desktop does bischscreen beta is great to play around with as well and it's free.
Yeah I existed a video with virtual desktop and my Mac and just left my AirPods connected to the actual Mac instead of the quest. Worked perfectly. I pretty much use VD for all my PC vr gaming. I even had a rift game that wouldn’t work on the oculus runtime but worked on VD!! It’s a nice piece of software for sure. BigScreen BETA just takes the cake but the quality is not great. 1080P 5Mbps bitrate. META should provide a 3D movie library to rent from and they should all be 4K 3D. I don't understand why people are not capitalizing on 3D now that a lot of people are getting into VR entertainment.

A big negative for me for Bigscreen is the subtitle support. It can watch videos over the network, but the technology it uses doesn't support external subtitles. Additionally, Bigscreen doesn't support any non-latin characters, so even if the subtitles are internal, it'll only read English, German, French, etc.
@@TheConstruct_VR In my experience 4XVR does subtitles best so far. It supports both internal and external ones, the name of the .srt file doesn't have to match, you can select any file in the folder, you can set the size, color, how much they pop out in a 3D movie, and whether they appear inside the screen or outside. It also has my favorite UI, the other players seem too bulky. However the Cinema Experience is, in my opinion, the worst out of all the apps that have a cinema scene. In 4XVR you're in a VIP booth above the seats and other than the small booth, the entire auditorium appears to be a flat 360 image.
Ha! Nice. Enjoy. I’m currently trying to figure out how to get local 3d movies to view in these apps. Making this vid unlocked a lot of curiosity for me too. Thanks for watching 👊🏽
I liked skybox vr you can edit the off set of 3d change to curved boost the sound but ....for flat screen films bigscreen is better latest update basically added an imax screen with user created places and being avle to change seats for the view i love i have a massive plex server full of blu ray films i ripped i love 3d the most for films
this is all cool but when you watch movie does it go full screen covering the entire viewing area in the headset? or is it like what you're 'showing framed in a tv like object or theater screen backdrop?
@@fUjiMaNia Both, Whatever you want. There are so many options. You can view as if you’re sitting in an environment like you see in many of the examples here or just make the screen as big as the wall i your house. You don’t want the video to completely fill the viewing space because you’d be looking at someone’s chin or something without the ability to look at the rest of the screen. 360 or 180 degree videos may be what you mean and yes those work too. Virtual Desktop and Skybox among may others. Look at this video I did about UA-cam, notice how the screen can be either as big as you want or a 360 view ( the screen is everywhere you look) 👉 ua-cam.com/video/QHX1beiULlg/v-deo.html
@@AJCoReTV Skybox has the streamer to pull content from a Mac but no desktop mirroring. Honestly virtual desktop is as good as it gets for Remote Desktop
could I stream vr file from a website, but the cache stays on the Mac, instead of it filing up my quest space? I found with deovr player even streaming files fills up the app… so I have to delete the app & re-install to clear space. But if I watch on Mac using mirroring app… it only shows flat.. does that make sense? Would skybox allow this?
@@AJCoReTV Yes Skybox works for that. So if you have a side by side vr video it would stream directly from the PC or Mac on it. Skybox has all those VR manipulating settings to handle such things as well. Everything remains on the Mac you’re streaming from, no caching I’m aware of
Skybox is solid. But now that I think about your question… skybox doesn’t have a browser. There’s one out there that does all the things it’s called Heresphere … try the trial you’ll see what i mean. One more plus for skybox is that you can buy a usb drive in the side of your headset and it reads from there… really nice for travel
Skybox was my favourite once. I prefer Moon Player now. Its fast, got a bunch of functions including Passthrough, supporting a lot of formats and it`s easy to handle. They lost me, because they don`t want to release an openvr-Version.
@@TheConstruct_VR Not just with USB. It works well with networks, even online, with Wifi, monthly updates and all that stuff for 10 bucks... It`s really ok :D
How are you able to stream netflix through virtual desktop? When I try the screen turns black after a short while of playing a movie. Read that it’s because of netflix not allowing it on vr headsets without using the app. Did it always work fine for you? Or did you do something? Thanks
I had to disable hardware acceleration in the browser settings. I’m using edge too so maybe try it there. Let me know if you get it working I’ll double check my settings
@@dukedillinger102 virtual desktop mirrors your desktop. But doesn’t have any social features. Unfortunately big screen is the only one with social features in this list. What’s the easiest way to watch 3D movies?
@@iSpritzgo to the 3d movie section in Bigscreen. Do you have local 3d movie files you want to watch?
That’s really cool… thanks for sharing!

Thank you! And go for it dude! Making videos in your normal voice and doing things you want makes it much easier to create. Best of luck! Don’t lose that confidence, what people watch fluctuates, showing up matters more than you think! 👊🏽

Thanks. We’re just getting started. People have been super supportive. I’m grateful. Thanks for watching!
❤ 4XVR ..
What do you mean "local file browsing" ? Can you remote connect to your PC via wifi?
@@MamaMia84oo7yes, exactly. You install smb servers or other network media sharing services and you can discover files from your PC just by having your headset connected to the same network. It’s amazing!
I've all that players and 4xvr is the best for me.
@@abakash9 Are you talking about interpolating on the fly? Do you use SVP or something else?
If you know much about real debrid whether using kodi or stremio. Real debrid support webdav as does skyboxvr. Using these two together you can watch almost anything. Large 20gb+ files 4k/1080p. Just streaming as fast as your net will provide
Bigscreen for social
4xvr for watching anything alone as it's the only app that can play full 3d movies in ISO format.
Virtual desktop for browsing your PC files like images, or gaming
I haven’t taken the step to do many local files so I have t had to go to 4xvr but it’s come up in the comments a few times. I’ll have to take note
@@TheConstruct_VR Oh definitely give it a try if you have any 3d ISO files. It can also play VR videos.

I’ve tried to remember to do that more often - specifically for film epics. If it’s a sci fi film, that scale transforms the experience.
Highly recommended in certain circumstances. It’s like a theater or IMAX experience.
I can see that. I think the movie experience is key. Like the one in this demo didn’t make sense but others would.
@@TheConstruct_VR well, I’m that dude that watched the original Transformers movie (1986) at massive scale.
Yes I’m done with that set up. It’s way too hard to stop the habit of looking toward the camera. Thanks for feedback and the kind words!
Thank you for the nice video!
Sadly, watching video in Virtual Desktop is still choppy, but to me that's not its main selling point, that would be that it allows you to play SteamVR and Oculus PCVR games without changing apps. Love the detailed breakdown and thoughtful use case considerations. Did not love the repeated head-turning to the camera, which made the VR image jump from side to side. I think it's the first time I've felt a little queasy watching a UA-cam video (that wasn't shot off a crazy tall structure). Maybe you put a camera above your virtual space (or in the middle of it) rather than turning to the camera, which doesn't add anything when we can't see your face. skybox VR is the top for me to play video. It plays everything :D It's like a VLC for VR :D
Cool to see how many people prefer skybox. I’m going to get a media server up on my home network and go crazy
I've mostly given up on watching movies in VR because of the judder due to the mismatch on FPS between the movie and the headset. The judder is most noticeable in action sequence or panning the camera. I wish there was a player that had frame interpolation built in.
Hmmm can’t say that I noticed. Virtual desktop does like you pick between 72 frames, 90 and 120 I wonder if that would solve the issue you see.
72 or 120 fps should both work well for movies, as most are filmed at 24 fps, and 72 and 120 both divide evenly by 24. Most UA-cam videos are going to at 30 or 60 fps, so 120 fos mode will be best for those.
@@c.g.vonhagenstein7576 💯 I stick with 72 just because I like having the performance overhead. I may mess with 120 to see if I like it better.
@@TheConstruct_VR Yeah I think I’ll go for it. Thank you for the detailed answer. Great channel

Yes. You can host your own room and invite whomever you want. You hoth just need to be on bigscreen on your quest or quest 2

Agreed. I regret not fully spotlighting the laying down environments in Bigscreen in this vid
@@TheConstruct_VR I’m using 4XVR and it’s free from the App Lab, image is crystal clear and 120hz head movement. Not sure if 4XVR has a lying down mode though.
Sky box was free in the quest 1 early days .
And so I still have it on my library of quest 3. For me it s complementary to VD.
Nice!!! Awesome to be grandfathered in like that.
So it's a no brainer for which two players to own.

Im using oculus app conected with airlink to see anything from computer, its the sharpest of the all apps especially if you use an airlink cable
Interesting for gaming virtual desktop is more crispy than airline in my opinion. I notice a slight screen door effect using airline. I think they limit bitrate to ensure performance so not totally a bad thing. But for movie watching in the oculus home I can see that being a solid video experience.
the Bigscreen app is awesome and I can't believe it's free!
Im suprised you didnt have the app titled spatial tv. Its all the rage right now shining onto your walls the lighting from the tv
Have you just tried in the stock browser and enabling the new window mode in v67?
I use Skybox on my Quest3 when I want to watch movies and on my PC I have Plex installed. In Plex I have several folders: one for my TV-series and others for the different types of movies and documentaries. But I have also the option to watch movies with the Riftversion of Skybox and watch the movies locally (I do that with movies which are not streamed by Plex, like UA-cam movies that I stored or VR movies. On my Pico4 I have the program Moon VR. I use the passthrough if I can.
Like Virtual Desktop as well, but it is not my favorite.
So cool. I’m tempted to get a media server going now.
@@TheConstruct_VR Plex is free and works very well. Once installed and you customized your movie maps, you need to turn on DNLA in the settings.
In virtual desktop if you don't finalize your click on moving the screen to its destination it will stay locked in place like the rokid ar glasses, staying in your view. I do that instead of accepting the head tracking location, as you've stated its pretty slow.
@@nthnglsn yeah I think of done that. I’m going to compare the head follow in VD to the follow me in fluid
@@TheConstruct_VR Yeah I was shocked reading the comments but I guess my problem isn't something a lot of people would come across.

@@TheConstruct_VR if you do, please let me know your thoughts on it. Also is it possible to watch 3D movies on those 3 apps you reviewed?
Thanks Paul! Yeah I’m gaining a new appreciation for head lock. Especially for watching UA-cam videos and moving around

Try the new virtual desktop built into Steam VR Steam Link on quest 3. Very smooth and can now play anything from pc including non VR games.
@@Dragorus360 yeah It’s always been there just easier with the Steam link app! Only lacking theater environments
I like the information presented, but when you have the headset on you should try to remain as still as possible. The jerking left and right was difficult to watch.
Yeah noted. I haven’t done that since this video. Others have pointed it out too. I have a terrible habit of looking toward the camera even with the headset on 😅. Thanks for watching!

@@TheConstruct_VR totally recommend doing it, if the telly supports dnla too then it’s a win win. 👍
@@bamber119 awesome. I want to do it just because of data streaming limits. My kids watch the same movies 100 times a week. No need to be streaming that from the services
@@bamber119Can you elaborate on what dlna on a smartphone adds in regard to benefits?
Spatial TV Keeps getting better! Impressive Quest 3 mixed reality lighting upgrades!
ua-cam.com/video/BaxU4Xd_X8s/v-deo.html
The reason why the video does not play smooth is because the bitrate is too high and the codec. You need to convert the video to H264 or codec the Software supports. with a lower rate.
You rock! I knew it was something logical. Not sure it’s worth it given that most of the time I’m just playing a file from the desktop itself. I don’t have any VR or 3D files that have the issue.
Thank you, I learned a lot from you today.

That’s odd, never had those issues. Sounds like it was some sort of network issue… VPN, Firewall/Proxy?

Agreed 3d has never been more accessible and the quality seems better in VR in my option (vs 3d TVs)

About Time is a great movie
A big negative for me for Bigscreen is the subtitle support. It can watch videos over the network, but the technology it uses doesn't support external subtitles. Additionally, Bigscreen doesn't support any non-latin characters, so even if the subtitles are internal, it'll only read English, German, French, etc.
Ouch. I think skybox only does external subtitles too right? What do you use that does subtitles best?

@@fUjiMaNia Both, Whatever you want. There are so many options. You can view as if you’re sitting in an environment like you see in many of the examples here or just make the screen as big as the wall i your house.
