    At 74 years young, i finely saved enough to get a Meta Quest 3 512g. I am very happy with it and i am very grateful for your review, Thank You. As my experience with and understanding of vr slowly grows i find the perceived needs and accessories needed to enhance my journey into vr is a strain on the budget. I need a younger mind, more experienced with this world to help with the must get items as i improve my personal exploration. I only wish there were real brick and mortar stores with people that use vr and are informed with the accessories that are sold. I guess that really dates me. As age creeps up on me, i am seeking more AI input with the content i work with, mainly science, world travel, and remote space exploration, self care, as well as civilized conversations and debate with people as my ability to get out of the house diminishes. I see a great need for elder engagement/care that vr/mr/xr coupled with AI would bring to the table for consideration as we age.

      The single biggest upgrade is a bobovr m3 max headstrap w extra battery and fast charging dock. You no longer have to worry about battery life. I also bought kiwi silicone controller covers w built in straps. The last thing I'd say would be a new face pad. That's only if u need a aftermarket face pad. Im ok w the stock pad as it doesn't bother me. One of my favorite things to do w mine is watch movies on a giant screen. I also play a ton of games. Enjoy and have fun

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  День тому +2

      @parkersgarage4216 - Agreed! I've spent the past 6 months testing all the headstraps and battery solutions - the BoboVR S3 Pro / M3 Max came out at the top of my list (video will be out in a couple weeks).
      I can also second Kiwi accessories - and their headstrap if you prefer over-the-head style headstraps (BoboVR is a halo style).

    • @parkersgarage4216
      @parkersgarage4216 День тому

      @aline.tech.reviews ive never tried a their strap. I love the m3 max headstrap. That coupled with a spare battery and fast charger is game changing. I love you can play as long as u want and never worry about battery life. The s3 pro is good I just didn't see the need for the fan. I seen it as a not needed battery drain for me. Im sure some may like it and actually need it. I second the kiwi accessories as well. I love the silicone controller covers w straps. Makes swapping out batteries simple. I forgot to mention rechargeable aa batteries. I bought a pack of Duracell 2600mah. That too is a needed purchase. I always have fresh batteries at the ready when needed.

    • @parkersgarage4216
      @parkersgarage4216 День тому

      @joannawhite1841 I forgot to mention rechargeable aa batteries w 2500-2600mah. You don't have to buy controller batteries. You also always have fresh ones at the ready. You want the higher mah rating due to demanding loads. Meaning they will last longer before needing changed. The kiwi straps also make changing batteries simple. You pull the battery cover to the side and change. No need to remove anything at all. Quick and simple

      I think you're going to love it! I still believe it's the best VR headset for first-timers; you are getting such an amazing value without skimping on quality. There's a ton of potential use cases and scenarios to explore. It's the only headset on the market I'd buy, as a consumer, at the moment; the next best option right now is to wait for another company's release.

I have really viewed a lot of reviews (or supposedly so) and opinions in general and I have to say that your analysis is without a shadow of a doubt the most thorough and accurate, as well as being also very objective, without easy enthusiasms. Also the editing, really well done: high quality and many examples.

It's extremely reassuring to know that it resonates with you and that there are folks that appreciate the details as I do.

    Well said. I may be an early adopter, the quest 3 may not be fully fleshed out yet, but i cant help but enjoy seeing this tech grow and im glad to be a part of it. Ive been enjoying Exercise, games, meditation, and im dabbling in multi monitor productivity learning blender. You say the resolution isnt the best for productivity, but scaling my monitor to 43"-50" is nice for not needing to squint at my 27" display, also being tall is a pain in the ass, so its nice to have that virtual monitor positioned higher up than my desk allows, sparing my spine haha. It may be the 3rd generation, but its definitely advanced enough to be taken more seriously as a commercial product than a novelty game console imo. Cheers on the great review!

    Very accurate breakdown. I personally thought my favorite experiences would be graphically detailed games like Red Matter 2 but it turned out that, much like flatscreen games, what really mattered was fun gameplay mechanics and good controls. I’m slowly trying a variety of different games that have been out for a bit to figure out what I like most before buying new expensive games that might be disappointing if they haven’t been updated for Q3 yet or if it turns out that type of game is not as interesting to me as I thought.

      Right there with you! I do enjoy the visual fidelity too though - can recommend the Games Optimizer app if you don't already have it (it allows you to supersample/overclock so you can get a better visual experience from some of the lower-fidelity games).
      I fell into the trap there, too. I didn't end up liking Assassin's Creed parkour mechanics very much and the gameplay is also very 'meh'. I wish I hadn't spent the money on it.

    11:37 it's not actually the controllers lagging behind, but the passthrough image that can't keep up due to the image processing needed. You can clearly see that the tracked and animated controllers are ahead of the camera feed.

      I posted about this a lot in other comments that said the same thing:
      1) I believe I jumbled my words in the video
      2) After a lot of testing, the latency just isn't that high.. what seems to be happening is that the rendered controllers are "predicting" where they're going to be and jumping ahead. You can test this by putting an object in front of you, and running your hand into it. You will notice that the rendered controller goes throufh the object, where your hand stopped, and will then "jump" back.
      It's likely a combonation of both, but the latency just doesn't appear to be high enough to cause this drastic effect alone

      That's a tough one - without a gaming PC, you'd be limited to standalone games. There's a lot of them, but there's very few 'great' ones. Honestly, I think you'd be better off trying the PSVR2.. that way you can utilize your existing gaming console. I know you didn't like the PSVR1, assuming that wasn't related to the games but rather the headset itself, then the PSVR2 seems like your best bet. I've read that they are launching PC support, so you would also be able to play PCVR games in the future if you ever end up getting gaming PC.
      From what I've read, the Quest 3 is inherently better in terms of visuals and just the overall number things you can do with it (I've never tried a PSVR1 or PSVR2).
      The PSVR2 is also on super sale right now - you can get it for $349 vs the $500 for the Quest 3.

      Great to hear! I have a new video coming out next month with all the updates from the year and my updated thoughts, but for a quick brain vomit: there have been a ton of updates in that time and Meta has been constantly adding new quality-of-life features, they've added a bunch of new tools to make spatial computing work more like the Apple Vision Pro (where you can spread multiple windows out around you, and access things like your browser from inside the game you're playing), lay down mode, an AI voice assistant that can open apps for you, graphics improvements, keyboard improvements, and so on.. They've improved the passthrough quality a bit, but it's not a night-and-day difference by any means - they've improved the colors for sure. The latest update is also bringing a whole new UI/UX that should fix a lot of my issues with the poor navigation design.
      Still the best bang-for-your-buck headset on the market, IMO - and I highly recommend it still.

  • @bubbleslovely129
    @bubbleslovely129 7 місяців тому +1

    This is a really really good review, and probably the best Quest 3 review on UA-cam. I did notice a couple minor technical inaccuracies when you talked about the tracking that you might want to be aware of:
    11:33 The latency shown here in the video is between the color cameras and the controller tracking. The real delay between your actual hands and the controllers is much smaller. You can see this from the fact that the camera image in your video is lagging behind the controllers and not the other way around; anecdotally, looking at the controllers and my actual hands side-by-side there's not any noticeable latency even in fast movements.
    There is a large amount of latency with hand tracking, which you can view with just the color cameras. The model of the hand will lag behind even what you see in the headset.
    12:03 Hand tracking is not used to correct the position or rotation of the controllers in any way. Each controller has an IMU that's used to approximate its position when tracking fails. The footage you show at 12:06 of your finger moving smoothly between position is actually a result of the touch sensor in the trigger, and not hand tracking. You can test this by keeping your finger on the trigger and moving it horizontally from edge to edge - the same animation of the finger will occur.
    Again, awesome review. I just thought you might want to be aware of these things :)

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  7 місяців тому

      Truly appreciate that, and thanks for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment! This level of engagement and thoughtfulness means a lot to me. =)
      For your first point, I thought so as well. However, from my testing the camera passthrough latency isn't that dramatic (I tested this by moving single fingers with hand tracking off, in which case the latency window feels incredibly small, and also by turning lights on and off). In the video and IRL, there is quite a large gap between the rendered version and the camera version, which suggests a much larger latency than what I observe from the cameras alone. What I *think* I found is that the controller/hand overlays are trying to predict where you're going next and draw in that predicted location instead of the true position. I was able to convince myself of this with hand tracking tests and confirmed the Quest 3 software tries to project where it thinks the hand is going next on the overlay version. It would be helpful if you could test the same for me to see if I'm way off base here: with hand tracking only, if you move your hand to the left and stop abruptly, the overlay of your hand will stay ahead of your hand always and, even after you've stopped moving your hand in real life, will continue to the left and then "teleport" or jump back to where your hand actually is. You can do it again with an object that impedes your hand from possibly moving any further in one direction, and then see your rendered hand go over top the object that stopped your hand before it jumps back to where your hand actually is.
      ^^ Therefore, I think it's a healthy mix of the two; the prediction piece seems to cause more of the disconnect between my brain than what little latency seems to exist. I presume this prediction exists to try to help offset some of that perceived latency. I have noticed a much greater latency with hand tracking on the Apple Vision Pro, even though it has less passthrough camera latency on paper.. which makes me think it's less about passthrough latency and more about the rendering/behind-the-scenes that causes the offset.
      For your second point, you are completely right about the finger positioning. My take was 100% incorrect and does NOT demonstrate the concept I was referring to. How I confirmed this is by using my middle finger to touch the button and seeing that the pointer finger is the one that goes down but not until you touch the capacitive trigger (it's the same with the capacitive buttons and joystick on top with the thumb).
      ^^ While my original understanding was definitely wrong, it doesn't confirm nor deny the claim in totality, as it could just mean this is a fixed state when controllers sensors are in view. Let me try to find my original source on this one to make sure I didn't make it up! IIRC, my source for this was from an interview with a Meta employee that claimed hand tracking is used, especially when the controllers are facing away (when the IR sensors are occluded or above/below a visible area).
      Again, truly appreciate the engagement and open conversation! I will continue to make mistakes or understand things incorrectly, and hope there are more realbubbles to help catch them.

    • @bubbleslovely129
      @bubbleslovely129 7 місяців тому

      @@aline.tech.reviews I think that "prediction" behavior for controllers has to do with how frequently the controllers are tracked per second - this behavior happens more with lower tracking frequencies (you'll Beatsaber players complain about this a lot, LOL. The term used is "swing bug"). I'm not sure if you can change the controller tracking frequency, but in experimental settings you should be able to change the hand tracking frequency. You'll notice that the problem is worse on 60hz than 120hz tracking frequency. For controllers, it could also be the IMUs sending bad movement data at high speeds and then that being corrected with IR tracking, causing the jump from the wrong position to the correct one.
      Also, for me at least it's hard to get a good feel on how much latency the camera passthrough really has. I had the same experience where just moving my hands with the hand tracking off felt pretty instantaneous, but doing something like spinning around in a circle while holding my hand out ended up with my hand in passthrough being a pretty significant distance behind my real hand. I would maintain that the controllers are probably a more accurate representation of where the actual hands are (in terms of latency) rather than passthrough.
      For hand tracking in particular: In the past, the cameras had to switch between different settings to be able to track your hands and controllers, so it wasn't possible to use them at the same time. Multimodal tracking was added to the Quest Pro because those controllers are self-tracked. For the Quest 3, multimodal tracking was recently made available to certain developers and users via the experimental tab but it wasn't when the video was released and from what I can gather it's not used to supplement controller tracking just yet. I'm not sure if they've changed the way hand tracking works to achieve this, if it's just using the front-facing color cameras for hand tracking and the additional cameras for IR, or if it's some other fancy solution along those lines. I vaguely remember an interview like the one you're talking about, so I don't think you're going crazy haha. But I also don't think such a thing is implemented yet.
      Thank you for your in-depth and totally unexpected response !! It's clear you've given this a lot of thought, and I appreciate that same attention to detail you put in your reviews.

    11:30 I think it's important to note here that the tracking isn't lagging behind, the passthrough video feed is.
    The controllers are tracked very precisely, but turning the photos from all of those cameras into a 3D experience a hundred times a second takes some processing

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  5 місяців тому

      Check out the other comments on this! I spoke backwards in the video, but that lead to us doing lot of testing, because the passthrough cameras didn't seem to be that laggy. It seems like what's happening is a combination, but the largest noticeable piece seems to be that the controllers are being projected into the future - it's trying to predict where they're going to be. Maybe to counteract the slight passthrough lag? To confirm this, we put a board in front of us and then ran our hand into it - the physical controller stops, but the virtual version keeps going through the board and then "snaps back" into place when it catches up.
      So definitely true, but it seems to be a combination of the two causing the issue.

    Question 2: Since Mac does not offer VR games (that I know), what would be a good small form factor PC rig for VR gaming?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  4 місяці тому +1

      I don't know that I would suggest one of the small form-factor PC's - those little boxes you see won't have a graphics card powerful enough to run PCVR (you need a good one to render the game for each eye and with a solid FPS).
      You would want to build an "ITX" (small form factor motherboard) gaming PC. Companies like NZXT sell them called the "H1 Mini". Ideally, you would get a 4080 if you can for future proofing yourself for many years. Otherwise, a 4060 is fine.
      You will save a lot of money by building one yourself. There is a Reddit sub dedicated to helping others build PCs. You can go there and tell them you need help building a "ITX gaming PC for PCVR with Quest 3" and someone will send you a list of the parts you should get that will give you the best bang for your buck. Then, you can just go buy all those parts from Amazon/Newegg and build it yourself.

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  Рік тому +3

      What do you do in AR on the piano? If you're planning to use an app like PianoVision, then it's probably not worth the upgrade. It's effectively "Guitar Hero" but for the piano (it simply drops notes and you have to hit them on time"), and doesn't work well unless you have a MIDI keyboard connected directly to the Quest 3 headset. The virtual keyboard, if you don't have a MIDI keyboard, does NOT work well enough with hand tracking to be useful.
      RE: Quest 2 vs. 3, it's worth the upgrade if you absolutely need the upgraded cameras for AR/XR experiences - the cameras are no doubt better (just keep in mind it's still blurry - reminiscent of an old 720p webcam).. or if you use your Quest 2 a lot and want the upgraded visuals. Otherwise, I'd stick with the Quest 2.

    Fantastic in-depth and organized review 💚 Super helpful! I definitely want to delve into VR after trying out a friend's psvr2. I want the best of the best and have been waiting for the Apple ProVision. However, whilst it seems it will definitely do mixed reality, movies, puzzles, meditation, and productivity, etc., the best (which as a filmmaker/video editor, is most of what I will use it for), I would still like to do some gaming and I have a good feeling it won't play nice with the Meta or PCVR storefront and apps. So considering getting the Quest 3. Seems to be the best and the best bang for the buck out now.
    In the near future I would definitely love a Quest 3 Pro and Valve to release their second rendition

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  11 місяців тому +1

      Yea, I think the bang for the buck you can't beat the Quest 3. Even if you would absolutely benefit from the 4k resolution per eye of the Apple Vision Pro, you could get the Quest 3 ($500) + Immersed Visor (4k OLED per eye @ $1000) and get both experiences for less than half the price. You would only lose a higher resolution mixed reality camera experience (of which there isn't anything good that exists for yet anyways). I don't feel the Apple internals + ecosystem + gimmicky experiences are going to be worth it.
      Also interested to see if Valve is actually going to release a next gen device.

      Actually a super viable combo with the Quest 3 and Visor thanks for the recommendation! Looking it up now. Unfortunately no reviews out for the Visor so going to wait to see how it compares to the ProVision. Hopefully you end up being able to review it.
      Yeah I don’t like the secluded environment Apple creates, though at least it is generally a smooth experience and the products all communicate easily with one another. The main thing I like that they’re doing opposed to other companies is using more metal/glass in their products rather than plastic. I like any company that does slightly better to be environmentally conscious. But if the Visor ends up being a way better bang for the buck after reviews for both, I’ll get that 🤙🏽

    This review is pretty spot on. I think there are 3 improvements they need to make until VR headsets are going to be common household item.
    1. The size and weight
    2. Longer battery (perhaps at least 3 hours and fast charge capability)
    3. Passthrough camera upgrade (way too blurry IMO, and like u mentioned, best for just seeing what's going on around you)
    I'm still thinking about returning the quest 3 as I already have the quest 2. The image quality is much sharper and clearer when reading text, that's for sure but graphics is not much different IMO.
    I want to use this mainly for work but I feel like the experience would be much better if those 3 things are improved on

      What kind of work do you do? If you're wanting virtual screens, I would check out the "Immersed Visor" - it is promising quite a bit for an insanely fair price (at cost); it won't be released until next year but worth following if you're wanting that use case. It's being made by the team who created ImmersedVR as they're trying to add a hardware play to make their enterprise offerings more appealing to clients.

    Excellent review. Seeing how new mixed reality is at this quality level and price, it's likely that developers will NOW start flocking to this area. And for traditional productivity apps (Adobe Premiere, MS Word, etc), it's time for VR versions that break free from the 2D screens they've been limited to. With VR the user can look around, walk through space, teleport instantly (uh, to their "file manager" which are cartons in a storeroom!). Thanks Meta for getting the ball rolling on this.

      I would say the text/virtual screens aliasing and low resolution are personally my main drawbacks with the device. My hopeful use case was to be able to work regularly on virtual screens (e.g., do my career job, plan/edit these videos, etc.). The resolution simply isn't high enough to make that worth putting on the headset over using the 3-4 displays in front of me as too much virtual real estate is needed to render the virtual world.
      Gaming is definitely a fun and immersive experience, but yea - I don't spend more than a couple hours/week playing video games and I haven't had any experiences during my testing that have pulled me back outside watching UA-cam videos and testing stuff. It has mostly been sitting on my desk over there untouched. I was not a fan of Assassin's Creed outside the initial climbing fun. I haven't yet tried Asgard's Wrath 2 but it's installed and waiting for me whenever I finish filming this next tablet review video.
      I would say if you are on the fence it's probably a good idea to find a local shop to wear one for a bit - and if you aren't overly impressed then a Quest 2 is like 85% of the experience for less than half the price (especially if you buy used).

    1. Does it feel motion sickness?
    2. If i want to play game on quest 3 and i dont want 360 view. I want just a small monitor. Is it possible to do that with every game?

    • @aline.tech.reviews
      @aline.tech.reviews  9 місяців тому +1

      1. This is subjective and very dependent on each person; if you get motion sick easy IRL, then you will probably get motion sick in VR. It is a common phenomenon and most games provide some settings (vignetting the edges to reduce motion blur and teleporting or snapping turn movement rather than real-time movement) to reduce motion sickness. I did not experience it in most cases, but in some fast-paced games with the settings turned off, turning too fast can make me feel nauseous while I'm moving.
      2) No, not every game. Most VR games cannot be played like you describe: games like Assassin's Creed Nexus, Population One, etc. all rely on the VR hand movements and controls so you cannot play them on a "flat" screen. However, if you have Xbox games (Forza Horizon 5, God of War, etc.) or PC games (Apex Legends, DOTA, etc.), you can play those with a virtual monitor - just keep in mind there will be minor input lag.

      Tracking will definitely fall off as your batteries die. Hand tracking takes a minute to recognize you put down the controllers in the default mode. Check out the Settings under movement/hand tracking. There is an option you can toggle on that will allow you to tap your controllers together to enable hand tracking. This makes the switch more immediate, because you're telling it what you want it to do vs. it needing to figure it out from you having put your controllers down and hands out.
