Orchid Disease - Bacterial Brown Rot, spotting, treating and preventing

  • Опубліковано 16 вер 2015
  • Sick orchids are not a topic we like to talk about, but it is very important to know how to spot, treat and prevent illness with orchids. Today we talk about bacterial brown rot.
    The cause for this is, in most cases, water left standing inside crowns, new growths and in the places where the leaf meets the stem or axis of the orchid. They start as a wet looking spot that progresses pretty fast as days go by.
    As the wet patch extends, a brown coloration starts to appear and the leaf may start to yellow, spreading more and more and trying to take over the leaf.
    To treat this we need to cut the entire affected portion, cutting into healthy tissue so that the disease doesn't reoccur. It is also advised to use a bactericide or fungicide, but if you are not ok with these substances you can use hydrogen peroxide 3% from your local human pharmacy. This is not as string and efficient as a fungicide, but it is not toxic and it does help.
    To prevent this diseases we need to avoid water left on leaves, crown and new growths, so when watering your orchid you need to make sure not to splash it on the orchid itself. Use fans or keep your growing area ventilated, most of the times this will prevent a lot of bacterial and fungal infections.

    You are the Queen of Orchids! Without question. I tried and threw all in Dumpster. They do require a lot of attention. Obviously you have time and you love what you do.

    Thank you Danny for your wonderful videos ! Until recently, I didn't want to own an orchid because I always killed them ! however, I am an avid gardener & wondered why I couldn't seem to keep them alive. That's when I found your videos. Thank God ! I have watched several videos now and feel much more confident. I have learned a lot. I do want to comment on treating infections--- I noticed that I have crown rot on a new orchid that was given to me. I may have caused it by poor watering practice. You showed how to apply cinnamon with a napkin (different video)--- napkin doesn't work well. This video shows you using a Q-tip. In using napkin, I couldn't control where cinnamon landed. Thanks again for all your hard work teaching us.

    Thanks for the tips! FYI: Hydrogen peroxide degrades in the presence of light. You might want to use an opaque spray container to keep it fresh.

    I have watched this video several times trying to save my Wils. Eye Candy 'Pinkie'. It came to me in September 2017 in full bloom and was absolutely beautiful. I decided to repot it on October 14, 2017 and used an Oncidium blend medium. It is in a clear, slotted orchid pot which sits inside a clay pot. While I was repotting it, I got an urgent call and had to leave while in the repotting process. The roots looks good so I did not use hydrogen peroxide on the roots before putting it in the pot. I did water it from the top at the sink and left it there while I was gone. After that it was watered by soaking the pot. Suddenly on December 28, 2017 I noticed a black spot on the edge of the leave that turned yellow as it got to the healthy tissue. Within 24 hours the entire leaf turned and another had a spot. I removed the entire bad leaf and the damage of the second leaf. I treated the cut with cinnamon and sprayed all of the leaves with hydrogen peroxide 3% and sat in a room with a ceiling fan. She was looking great and then it happened again on February 19, 2018. I repeated this treatment and now it's happening again for the third time, 3/3/18. I am at a loss. Do I need to treat the medium as well, or remove it from this medium? I have photos, but didn't know how to attach them. ~ Thank you, Connie

    Great video, thank you! You recommend taking steps to make sure that the water evaporates as quickly as possible. Some people recommend spraying orchids with water once in a while because they enjoy the humidity. But would you recommend not spraying with water (unless living in a extremely dry climate)?

    Hi... I have an Ecyclia Vitellina that is almost dying and don't know how to save it. I've tried cutting off the spotted leaves, sprayed it with peroxide, but the pseudobulbs are shrivelled and now the spots appeared also on the new growth in a way that makes it very difficult to remove the affected part without removing basically the whole plant. Any suggestion would be very welcome. Thanks

    It seems like my orchid has this infection. The leaves are yellow and have brown spots and now there is an area where it has little swollen balls. I'm worried its reaching the bottom and will spread to the stem.

    Hi Danny, sorry to boder you, but I need your opinion. Like four weeks ago, I started to notice this spot on one of my orchids leaves, it is brown surrounded by yellow, it started on the tip of the leave. I think is growing slowly, I know I saw another spot more in the center on the same leave. I have another orchid and the tip is yellow. At the beginning, I thought it was sunburn or intense light damage, so moved them away from window (South face and sun is coming back) then thought it could be spider mites, but only this leave has the damage, I've been spraying a solution with water, dish soap and alcohol and don't see that is working. Can it be fungal infection? I am attaching a link to photo bucket so you can see, but the lesion is now bigger and more brown. Thank you Danny. I want to save this orchid and don't want the problem spreads to my other phalaenospsis.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому

      +MrCradle87 buna, cred ca lana la care te referi este un fel de mucegai. e bine sa elimini sursa problemei inainte de orice tratament si de multe ori este vorba despre un substrat vechi si degradat sau radacini moarte. cred ca un inceput bun ar fi sa replantezi orhideea in substrat proaspat si sa elimini radacinile moarte, mai ales daca nu ai replantat-o de la cumparare inca, de multe ori substratul cu care vin este foarte vechi. mai departe vorbim de ventilatie si udare corecta, dar mai avem pana acolo, cred ca replantarea este primul pas daca substratul nu a fost schimbat niciodata :)

    Hi, Dani! I am still fairly new to orchids. I have phals and I am having some trouble with watering them. I try so hard not to touch the leaves or the stem with the water, but I seem to keep loosing bottom leaves. Maybe I have them planted too low in the medium?? I would love if you would explain what part of the stem, or base, not to get wet. I can't seem to find this information anywhere. I have watched many orchid watering videos and they never seem to be as careful as I am while watering, yet their plants are great. Please share you thoughts. Thank you!!! :D

      @MissOrchidGirl  9 років тому

      +Jamie Delafosse Hi Jamie, well how many leaves did you lose so far? if you say 2, it might be normal :) Phals usually lose bottom leaves as new ones are produced. However you might have a problem with the depth as well, if you could upload a pic on photobucket or flickr I could take a look. Regarding stem rot I do have a video on it, maybe this will help more ua-cam.com/video/ErKc0aYlQCY/v-deo.html

    • @omheart11
      @omheart11 9 років тому

      +MissOrchidGirl I was going to submit a photo for you, but that day the last leaf fell from it :( There were only two leaves and they were super green, plump and healthy. I can see now that it was stem rot that made them drop, as the base of the leaf turned black. I am now wondering if there is any sense in trying to save it. It has a decent root system, but no leaves. I have a feeling that it will not be successful.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 років тому

      +Jamie Delafosse yes there is a chance to save it :) try to spray the remaining stem with hydrogen peroxide 3%, this will hopefully kill off the fungus. After a few minutes dry it off very well, I like to place it in front of a fan for 30 minutes to an hour. After that place some cinnamon in the crown and at the leaf joints, but not on the roots! this will keep the place dry. Water the roots when they are dry, like you would a normal Phal, but don't get water inside the stem and crown. With a bit of luck the orchid might either produce a new leaf at the top or a basal keiki. There is a chance this will not work, depends on the extent of the damage, but I believe it's worth a try :) good luck!

I suspect my orchid has quite a severe case of Brown rot but i do not want to remove all the leaves before i'm sure (it's spread pretty bad on 3 of 4 leaves while 1 leaf is turning yellow. the stalk seems to be getting spots as well, however it's still growing new flowers. can i send you a few photos before I start cutting? thanks

      The normal hydrogen peroxide that can be purchased at your local pharmacy store (or wherever) is already a 3% dilution. Use that straight out of the bottle.

      Miss Havisham but my.dear nothing 3% available in my country I looked for it all available is 6% so am asking can I add some of water.thanks

      Oh, well, you didn't say that in your first post. Now I understand your question. The answer is "yes," you may dilute the hydrogen peroxide further by adding water. The ratio to dilute it to achieve a 3% solution would be 1:1. Good luck!

    Hi Dani,
    Great videos. What should I do if the infection is on the pseudobulb? instagram.com/p/BJSDeuDjMMh/ I have repotted in hydroponic media expanded clay pellets with just a bit of miss for hydration and humidity. I presume this infection is bacterial? The mark has been on the pseudobulb for about 6months and not gotten any bigger after being treated with hydrogen peroxide. The orchid hangs outside under the canopy of a Chinese orchid tree which I prune and train into an umbrella shape specifically for the purpose of hanging my orchids. I live in hot humid Hong King. Thanks for your Chanel. It's incredibly informative and makes following this wonderful hobby so much easier.

      Hi, if the infection doesn't spread then you don;t need to do anything, there is a chance the tissue is just dead but not infected anymore, so it poses no threat to the pseudobulb and the good tissue still left :) just keep the orchid dry on that area to be safe and I think all should be well :)
