Dani you’re one of the best teachers on Orchids and helped so many of us beginners. Thank you!
No she is not
She IS the best! 😂
@ mip
💯 Agreed! I'm a beginner and I don't feel the need to get information elsewhere 😉
Agreed!!!! She is literally thee best!!!!
I recently bought my first phal, and came across your channel while doing some basic research on these. YOU ARE JUST AMAZING!! This is best, professional, zero nonsense UA-cam channel I have ever come across! So detail-oriented and great presentation. Thank you for sharing all your hard-earned knowledge on your beautiful orchids! Much love! wishing you great success!
Hi miss orchid! Don’t you mind tell me what’s the material you using for orchid? Thank you
Anh Ha (I think it is either “lecca” or “ceramis.” Google those words?)
The first time you were able and you had to do that yyyuu
Besides being exceptionally, knowledgeable and having wonderful content....I could listen to you speak, all day long. What a cheerful, soothing, happy voice :)
every time i have an orchid-related question you 100% of the time have a video on it
After I got a few air plants, my phalanopsis orchid started putting out LOTS of aerial roots (coincidentally, no connection with the acquiring of air plants.) When I investigated, I found that the orchid's covered roots had died, so I just cut it loose and began taking care of it the same way I take care of my air plants. It is doing very well with a weekly soak in water, (monthly addition of orchid fertilizer) air dry on a towel and then set back into its substrate-less container (a strawberry planter) hovering over about an inch of water for humidity. I am really thinking that this may be the best way to keep a phalanopsis. I'd love to see some videos on creatively keeping phalanopsis as an air plant.
Great information! Thank you! I followed here after finding the semi-hydro videos on Michael's Orchids. I never thought I was capable of treating an orchid properly, but the two of you really offer all the technical info I need to try to dive in! Thank you so much.
Its just so calming to listen to you. You are a sweet person . God bless .
Fantastic video, channel and source of knowledge for us all to use. Thank you! :)
Thanks for doing this video. It was very informative. Helpful with my growing phals again after a hiatus. The comments about the color change during watering for older, established roots vs. new roots were something I didn't know. I assume that this is common with vandas as well. Keep those videos coming. Always find them interesting.
Girl, you have a wonderful channel.
The best on the media. Thank You.
Hello, I wanted to drop by and give thanks for your wonderful channel. Your posts are concise, accurate, and articulate.
I appreciate your comprehensive collections. From your introduction, you post a natural progression, any questions/concerns I have after watching a video, are answered sequentially.
Additionally, thank you for listing resources in the description, your channel is awesomely informative and content/references superbly thought out. Thank you!! 🙂
This is the best orchids tutorial. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I agree! MOG is streamlined to my tv - when I’m home I sometimes just leave it on... they’re to the point- educational and very relaxing listening to her voice :) as I my job is up ‘in-the-clouds’ at 37,000ft!✈️✈️
very informative answered a lot of questions I had thank you
Thank you! Your videos have been very helpful for a Phal beginner like me!
I'm glad I found your channel you are so thorough. And I like that you leave the word above if it's something that we may not understandWhen you speak in case we want to research it for more information...
Thank you for sharing helping for the beginner to take care phalaenopsis 😊
I never thought about having air pockets to allow root growth... seems so logical. Sometimes the Phal roots are so thick they fail to penetrate the medium. One thing I notice is that in super high humidity in a pot, root hairs will form. It gives a substantial increase in surface are to absorb water / nutrients. Untested theory, but I think the root hair structure is also what causes the root to stick to and anchor itself to porous surfaces.
I am learning so much about one of my fav flowers ever! Thanks so much! Very educational and informative channel!!!
I love the new look of your channel!
Your videos are amazing I’ve just inherited a 9 year old phalonopsis orchid
I love your videos!!!! Extremely informative and you have so many to choose from!!! Thank you!!! 😃🌱
Have been watching your tutorials. Enjoying. Just started learning about my orchid. What are the round items that you have this orchid living in????
And where do I buy it?
Wow, you are one of the best sources of Orchid information and tips I have been able to find! You got me as a subscriber. I thank you a thousand times! I am a new owner of several orchids. I love these beautiful plants!
Great video. Loved the way you presented the info. Thanks
I've learned so much from your videos, so thank you!
What a wealth of information. I love this channel.
I was actually was just trimming the dead roots and mesmerized seeing the roots shooting in different places. :)
I love your channel. I am a recent converted to orchids and I am fascinated by them. You are probably the only reason they are still alive 😬
I agree that quality beats quantity every time, as long as you can manage financially 🤞🏻
Wondering where you're from?
Your videos saved my orchids ! So helpful
Thank you for your information. It is so helpful.
Also so happy to have stumbled on your channel you have taught me a lot and I love these beautiful flowers thank you
So true in regards aerial roots growing away from light source. Tnxs very informative 👍
I like the idea with a string around the inside pot. I have to try it.
Thank you so much for this very informative video! Very helpful 🥰
Thank you for the great video 👏🙏
I am hoping to start my orchid hobby soon 🙂
I have 2 old orchids with aerial roots growing absolutely everywhere. I have one with roughly 15 growing in all directions, the other has more than 20 (I reached 20 when I counted, then lost track). 😆
The one with the most roots, they're growin up, down, around, they branch out and they just keep growing! The one with a little less root isn't as crazy, it doesn't have as many branching roots and they are not nearly as long but it's still a lot and they do grow a lot too. I think it's been 2-3 years since they were last repotted but they're both doing great.
Orchid air roots definitely do grow towards water. Try growing your orchids in a kitchen or bathroom. The roots will grow toward the sink, whether or not there is a window in that direction.
Great video! I learned so much
Awesome information!!!
Now I know why some of my orchid roots are yellow and white. Thank you for the information!!!
I love phal roots, they're so cuwte 🥰
that's great lessons thank you for this idea.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you!
You are awesome!!!!! Thank you!
Dani, you’ve taught me so much. Desperately trying to save 2 phalanops given to my by grandchildren. One is 2 years old and the other is 1. Have you ever planted 2 in the same pot? It’s 8” across and in a bark medium. Now, thanks to you, all the dead roots are cleaned away. Should I pot them separately? Good green leaves, air roots, but no blooms. Thank you.
I had one grab my wall and hang on. when I went to move the orchid, i found out how attached they were!
WHO WOULD THUMBS DOWN THIS? haha this is so informative, thank you!!
those who lok at her pots , clay balls, so on. bref those who understand her speech is empty.
The double color of the root, green and red as you called it, is because of excess light exposure. It's a defense mechanism plant uses to counteract the excess received sunlight by converting some of its green pigment into reddish that are not responsible for photosynthesis.
I love your videos! A friend gave me 2 potted orchids. I dont know if they are in degraded bark/moss or if its potting soil. They had/have no blooms or spikes and no air roots. Ive been watering them for months and while they seem to be doing ok, there has been no change in their growing. No new follage or air roots.
I learned from your videos that they should be in bark or moss and plan to repot them tomorrow.
All this being said, I dont know what type of orchid they are so I dont know what care they need. I didnt even know there was more than 1 kind of orchid!
These were house warming gift for my moving to Houston, Texas. I want to take PROPER care of them and see their pretty blooms, can you help me identify them please?
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing how to repot phalaenopsis
My sedirea japonica’s roots has recently become desiccated and leaves have fallen off. I water it once a week, and it’s in an open terrarium. What was once lush has now started to wither away. I going to try the plastic bag method to increase humidity and pray for the best!
Thank you so much for helping me. I just got a phal and I don’t know anything lol.
Very useful
I have a store bought Phelonopsis that all the roots have dried out and "died" however there are new leaves sprouting. Should I cut the dead roots? BTW love your videos....they have helped me a lot with my orchid skills and current passion. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
thanks for sharing here
Thank u somuch!
thank you ☺
Hi Dani! LOVE your videos. Question, I am trying to revive a phal that had no roots AT ALL. So, ive been following your advice and sort of adding my own. It start to sprout roots? It almost looks like a Keiki and not a root. Do you have a video about Keikis? Thanks❤
Great video! I was wondering if I need to drill holes on the sides of my clear pot? Mine only came with drainage holes at the bottom.
I just got a new orchid and was replanting it and noticed that it seems to have some type of sponge around the center (bulb) under the leaves. Should I leave it? Its really stuck to the plant, but, also seams to the really wet and like it might cause rot.
Another orchid I have (Dendrobium phalaenopsis orchid
) that lost all its roots before I could re-plant it has been rootless but living for over 6 months, should I be doing anything different to encourage root growth?
great video! have you ever seen a root growing from the top of a flower spike, along with another flower spike branch? should I cut the root with that flower spike branch then repot it?
wow i like it very much!
Hello, love your videos, learning a lot. Would like to know do roots need to be trimmed when repotting? Thanks!
Hi, if they are dead then yes they need removing, if no then let them be ☺️
Hey !
What do you think about watering orchids overall with distilled water ? And making fertilizer solutions with it ?
Love your vedios.. I have phal whose roots are not growing as you mentioned, and I am worried.. I got it in the beginning of winter and repotted it with sphagnum moss because it was in the sphagnum moss.. I water it when the medium looks dry.. And feed with plant food mist once a week.. I see just 3-4 roots in a healthy gray green color but they don't seem to grow.. Temperature in my home is 67 f..
Hi, I got an orchid as a gift and I had no clue what to do with it. It was in this teeny plastic pot with moss type medium and it didn't look so good so I took it out of there. I messed around with my own mix and re-potted it. (mistake obviously lol) The blooms fell off and the spike turned black and had to cut it off because I didn't want the entire plant to die out.
Luckily, I found your channel and started to learn a little more about this unique plant. I got orchid potting medium, rinsed the roots out a bit (got green almost right away), and placed her in her new home. Its been about 3 months, she's still kickin' but she doesn't have a spike, barely has a stem and doesn't look like she's growing at all. What should I do with her? I don't want to give up on her.
Thank you for the instructional videos! :)
thank you
I am so glad to find your chanel.. I have listened to a lot of "how to's" and still killing plants and what you shown I been there. I need to know something when you get a orchid that are very full in the pot how do I know when and if it needs repotting its hard to tell with all the medium in the clear pots and I don't like top bother a new plant. I was told oh they like to be crowed I am at a loss of any answers anymore and I been killing orchids for 15 years and still failing...help me please any hing can be helpful I need to know more on every orchid I try to stay away from phal.s due to they're so fussy. Just bought a sherry baby and it look like its crowed to me.. Thank you... :0)
I have 1 sick orchid with almost no roots. In what media do i repot it to give it a chance?
Is window light ok, or artificial light better for Orchids? I have just started my collection, so I’m learning a lot about them. I know I’m learning, but I would hate to lose them. I’m anxious for summer, I live in Texas, and it’s cold. Thank you for all your knowledge and advice on these beautiful flowers.💐
Hi, I am not a ‘green thumb’ at all however I received a phal orchid gift and managed to keep it going through two bloomings. Yay!!! Now I think I’m hooked which brings me to my present dilemma. I rescued a phal orchid from a doctor’s surgery. I felt so sorry for it as nobody had time to water it. They told me I could take it and try to revive it. I took it, cut off the absolutely dried out spikes and repotted it according to your instructions. 😬 My question is, assuming I’ve done it properly how long before I know wether I’ve killed it 😞 or saved it. ☺️
Hello Dany, You boil the leca you use for your orchids or you make some special treatment to the leca? Ty for replaying! Love your videos!
I heard her say in another video that she never boils her Leca, she used to spray with hydrogen peroxide 3% but now I think she just rinses it. I used to boil mine but I don't think it's necessary. Now I just rinse and use. If I want to reuse Leca from one orchid with another orchid I microwave it to sterilize before reuse.
My phalaenopsis has bloomed and I have two new total orchid plants that have grown at the top of the two original spikes. Shall I cut them off at the stem then plant each, with some of the original stem into the soil?!
Danni, I must say that you are very inspiring when it comes to your hobby of growing orchids. So much so, I have phalenopsis now in my home. I do have a question that I want you to answer for me. My first orchid developed so many blooms that one actually snapped off. It was quite heavy as it bloomed nineteen blooms on one flower spike and twenty one, plus two buds. The one that had nineteen blooms was the one that snapped. I was washing some dishes at the sink, admiring my beautiful orchids, and the one that had the nineteen blooms snapped just above the first bloom on the spike. Did I do something wrong, or is it sometimes normal with heavy blooming that you have to support them more.? I indeed was heartbroken when it snapped off, leaving only one bloom. The other one now has twenty two blooms, and is supported by a skewer carefully taped to the support rod, and clipped with the growing cascade. I'm not taking any chances with that one. It may sound silly, but I named her Henrietta. The second one I purchased last Friday,, and she is in beautiful bloom. Currently there are two flower spikes, and one has several blossoms yet to burst into beauty. Solid purple Phaleneopsis BTW her name is Mary Beth. I had never considered growing Orchids before, but they are such a fun hobby I found out. I wanted to ask if I had done anything wrong with the cascade snapping on its own. Love your channel, and will continue to watch as my beautiful Orchids bloom. Thanks a million.
Hi Dani! I see some dark spots on the second orchid you handle on the video, I think it is a violacea. Do you know what they are? My Bellina came with very similar black spots. Thank you!
Orchids can naturally have dark spots that are just from pigmentation, especially on younger leaves or orchids that have darker flowers. It can also happen on light colored orchids as a reaction to higher light living situations - I have a white phalaenopsis which has these little pigmentation spots because it's growing next to a bright east window right now, but it's very happy there so the spots don't concern me, even when they're on its keiki's leaves. I wouldn't worry too much unless it looks like it's spreading aggressively, so just keep an eye on it. It's normal!
would a tabletop humidifier be too much for an orchid? I'm new to them and am so afraid of rotting it out, I've already made mistakes...
One gallon clear gladware containers less then a buck a piece, drilled out with a bunch of 1/4 inch holes top and bottom, and filled with pine bark, charcoal, perlite and a little peat moss /dirt plus fertilizers.
Hi Danni.....JUST LOVE YOUR CHANNEL !!! I am fairly NEW to orchids .....I have had my first encounter with trial and error ) :((((. ......anyhow no use crying over split milk as they say u live and learn in this area ........any area too in life in general......any how with baby orchids after planting them OFF The mother plant and into their own home after the 3 seconds of initial watering you just leave them for a 1-2 month period before watering again ?? And just harden them off as you say.....?? Just would like to know when you can water them again and start fertizling them SLOWLY ......when would you start and HOW do you know when to start will you see MORE roots in the container ....I have a keiki .....which grew OUT of medium and totally in the AIR before planting it in it's own home.....3 inch wide by maybe 2 inch high net pot with A LOT of holes for air ventilation.......I also have a sickly orchid too again trail and error BUT the leaves are still amazing green and it has a flower spike NO flowers as it only had ONE root I could save I sprayed hydrogen peroxide in water on it before I repotted it. Both the baby and the sick plant are in the same containers VERY small ones for now like what repotme.com has those net pots VERY small ones. LOVE their supplies.
Can you please talk about the blooming of the phalenopsis
great information but my Phalaenopsis stem is 8 inches long with aerial roots all down it! It just keeps falling over! Huge branches and 7 different flower spikes...not sure what to do with it anymore!! Help!!
Hello, so I have three phals and I just learned about your Vids so I have some potting soil and the right pots on order. M question is I have some pretty unruly roots that go everywhere. Should I jsut leave them alone or is there a way to trim them back? Also I actually have an entirely new orchid plant (roots, leaves, and even a flower shoot) growing off of an existing flower shoot. What should I do about this?
What if the roots are silvery and dry at the top but still green and moist toward the middle and bottom of the pot? Is it then time to water or wait until the entire pot's roots are silvery?
Hi Miss Orchid, I have been watching your videos and taking care of a very sick Phalaenopsis orchid. I got the potting mix from the same company you recommended and repot the orchid. Only, most of the roots are dead, I cut off both flower spikes so the orchid can focus on producing roots and leaves. But I also moved recently, and heard that moving orchid can change its environment and harm its growth? Also, is coconut good for a sick orchid? I lost 2 bottom leaves and have 3 left, but they’re looking worse each day, (not as perky, but still green). Please please help!
Dani my orchids are not doing well, I live in a hot dry weather area. Should I water them more frequently plus I use only bark, should I add in sphagnom moss, perlite and vermiculite? Please advise. Thank you.
Hi Dani! I am Not new to Orchids, However I usually kill them. I recently got 2 on sale at my local Lowe’s! I repotted them because they were in all Moss and sitting in water which I learned from you is not good. I repotted to the Orchid bark mixture and added some extra perlite and vermiculite! My concern is I am loosing leaves since I did this. I make certain they get light from a west facing window so no direct sun. They sit on the same table by my french doors. One is blooming away and the other is having one leaf at a time turn yellow and fall off. It is growing new leaves and the ones falling are lower leaves! I am careful with watering as I feel I killed previous one by over watering and not changing the medium! Am I doing something wrong?
I'm keeping a phal in a vase with no medium at all. So far so good! Have you tried this ever?
Kayla W how are you keeping moisture levels with it?
meelliemoe this is semi water culture
I am a beginner and just bought my first orchid today. A phalaenopsis. Had the plastic wrap removed but not repotted yet. Should I add bark to the existing peat moss ( I presume).
Hi
My phal few root residuals buried inside the pot which are not connected to pot. Is it a good idea to leave it as it is or should I think of repotting in fresh media. I am concern over rotting.
I was given a Phal that bloomed for 8 months for me , then began to die back .
I snipped the blossom stalk back , new leaves are growing nicely .
I did an expirament where I'm covering over the top of the medium & dead aerial roots with banana peels and now healthy aerial roots are sprouting !
I live in Phoenix, in the heat & my plant resides in a western window ... this is a fun expirament to do but WHY is my orchid growing aerial roots only after being covered by banana peels ?
Any ideas or answers ?
Question Danny:
Should I cut off roots that look like they are dead (brown and thin but still kind of hard) at the base but continue to grow silvery and some even branch out way further along.
That's what ive been trying to figure out! Yet nobody has an answer!
Hi, my orchid has 2 leaves and one long green root and a few short roots on top that don’t look too great. I’m waiting for new roots, but instead I see 3 dark bumps. How do I fix it and help it grow healthy roots?
I wish I would’ve watched this before I just butchered my orchids roots it was full of red and black roots. But also the main shaft was in a block of dirt. Guessing because of how it was grown. So hopefully it stays well.
Hi Danny , I repotted my purple orchid couple weeks ago and now some of the roots are turning red , is it normal ?
Mine phal isn't looking happy and the areal roots seemed to be dying. Imagine my shock to lift out the roots and see the ends were completely white as snow. I was planning to severe them but as they're in an opaque pot I think I will leave them be. Thank you!
What if the roots grow through the pot? Can I cut them before I transplant them?
How often do they bloom?
Mine Phalenopsis has very healthy green leaves and one of the orchid grow another one along on top of same stem ( i dont know what are called)
But it has not bloom for about 10month
Do ever add root hormone when replanting a sick phal , cut off a lot of dead roots and there are only a few aerial roots…thanks for your answer
How can u tell how old a plant is? I’m new at this watching many videos thank you 😊
Dani recently myphalaenopsis orchid flowers are wilting and falling off some are new orchids don’t know what to do ? Also I have on that I’m trying to keep going she is not doing well she has blooms on the stems but the root system was bad She has one root that’s in tact again just waiting to see
