8:44 I find this often occurs when big box stores overpack their media to keep them moist longer til a buyer comes along, but it sets the buyer up for failure...IYKYK! While u prob didn't save this orchid, you can generally save the plant line...by that I mean, if your roots are still healthy, it can often produce a keiki within 8-10 wks if u continue to keep it hydrated (this period does require some vigilance). After that, if done in spring/summer, you'll have a healthy lil mini phal within 3-4 mos... but really it can be done anytime it's just the warm temps really ramp up vegetative growth. I've done this w/ several phals I didn't want to lose. Sometimes I keep the bald root ball in very loose lightly moist sphag, sometimes I'll just chuck it in an empty open jar and mist it daily (or try to anyway 😬). Once I even got a new leaf in lieu of a keiki from the "dead" crown husk. Here's a year photo timeline of one I bought, rotted, resurrected and 7 mos later the keiki is now a 6.5" Phal, 5 leaves strong, continually rooting & now spiking(!): flic.kr/p/2qxDhP8
I purchased this plant already infected. It was on sale and thought it was just cold burn. Luckily, I kept it away from other orchids! When I realized it was an infection, I threw out leaves & flowers. I'm trying to start new plants with flower spikes. Also, since lots of the roots were good, I'm trying to grow new leaves from the base of the stem by the roots. I just ordered your Orchid record book so I can keep records of my experiences. I am new at all this so I have lots to learn! (I don't know how to attach photos.)
Thank you so much for this video! I have a few orchids & one has a huge dark spot that keeps growing larger...but it also has white spots. Now I know from this video that my orchid has a fungal issue. You just gained a subscriber.
Great video, thank you! Trying to save two I got from a neighbour. Leaves on the “better one” have the black/brown staining, the other has very droopy leaves. Turning out to be a nightmare, too much work, probably better just throwing them out!

I am a newbie, so THANK YOU, I'm sure anything you think important enough, you will post. LOTS of Anything and Everything!
I picked an infected plant on sale to save it, it had a cut leave and a lot of the white dust bugs, I cleaned it and disinfected it, after a while my orchid starter to grow really healthy it's leaves went from droopy to stiff and it grew a new leave but now I see a big brownish to black spot with dead tissue at the middle
I can see the orchid with white flower on the left of the video showing black near the stem, surrounded by yellow. I think I have something similar developing on the leaves below the top most pair. Is this normal, or rot?
Hi Amanda, Thank you for useful info. I had a case with on of my orchids. I bought a new phalaenopsis. I was so happy that I have a plant with 5 flower spikes. I was so excited about it. I left it a side and kept it in the plastic wrap to avoid any temp shock. After 3 days, I noticed a black spot on one of the leave. When I removed the plastic, I found one pod trapped between 2 leaves. Bacteria start to grow on both of them. I use H2O2 to treat it but for some reason it did not work for me. Finally, I had to cut the infected part and used cinnamon.
Hi Abdulhalim, 5 spikes? That's amazing! I have found that Hydrogen Peroxidw doesn't do everything that people say it does. It's good to clean the leaves, but not much else. It doesn't kill or halt bacteria so cinnamon is the best thing next to a bactericide for plants. Just don't get cinnamon on the roots. If it spreads too much, it's best to cut the leaf off.
My Orchid is blooming and looking pretty however every leave on it has brown spots but there are not on top of the leave but all are underneath the leaves. Is that Bacterial Brown spots too?
Hi Ina, I honestly don't know. I've never seen black spots on the underside of the leaf. In any case, I would treat it with a bactericide and see what happens. Physan 20 won't hurt rhe orchid, and if it isn't bacteria, then no harm is done to the orchid.
I got brow spots on the flower and dark line on side of leaves. Is this also Bacterial related? I heard someone say to add a bit of cayenne pepper on water. Is this a possible treatment too?
I bought an orchid as a rescue and I thought it was just a little bruising, I think my orchid has a bacterial infection:( none of my other plants are showing signs of infection wondering if neem would also work? I will be doing hydrogen peroxide for now! Thank you for such an informative video! The browning isn’t to bad just on one spot but it does seem to be spreading
Hi Joseph Rapp, Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. Unfortunately, I don't have a video or an article on zygos. They are a tricky orchid to grow. I'll look into ans see what I can find and research if they are any different. Sometimes one genus of orchid attracts specific bacteria. Other times, it's natural and it's nothing to be worried about. *fingers crossed that it's the later.
Hi Jill, Once the back spots are on the leaf, they won't go away. They just sit there and get worse. To avoid the spread of this bacteria, you need to spray the entire leaf with a bactericide or fungicide, which also works. I use Physan 20 just because it's easy to use and does a good job. If it's not a Phalaenopsis, then it can be normal. Some orchid have these spots and they're ok. As long as they don't spread and grow, you're covered.
I tied my orchid to the avocado tree I have, last year. It was dying inside so I gave it the black tea treatment, which helped the roots come back to being green. I tied it to the trunk but I think it was too tied. I did see some growth of new leaves on that sick orchid but that was it. The baby one I bought hasn't done anything but it's still alive. Now recently I've seen bite marks on the leaf from the previously sick orchid. I've pretty much left nature take care of it cause I pretty much gave up. I live in Florida and it's hot, but rains every day during this summer. I've tried to growing plants but everything dies on me, so I think the orchids I have have a slight better chance of survival outside.
Hi Munchiis, I know the exact feeling. I am not good with most house plants because I forget to water, so orchids have been a life saver for me. On the tree outside, your orchid will do great. I don't have a video about how to tie orchids to trees (not yet anyways) but I did write an article about it. You can read it here: orchideria.com/orchids-on-trees/ The Florida humidity will do wonders for your orchid.

Hi LW, You are correct in isolating them. Scrub them down with a soft toothbrush or very smmoth sponge. Use a misture of water and light/mild dish detergent and that should do the trick.
Hello, thank you for the video :). I have not Physan 20 in Italy, can you tell me another product or the composition of Physan? I can find anti fungi, but not antibacterial. Thank you.
Hi Malaspina, You can try 2 things, but I haven't tried them personally, so this is based on theory and not practice. I read that you can use 2% solution of Sodium Hydrochloride (bleach) if you dilute it well. The other option would be to use Corsodyl (chlorhexidine gluconate) antiseptic mouthwash or Listerine. I know that's not a very common answer, but it doesn't hurt the orchid and it kills the bacteria. I've had more than one person recommend this, so I guess it works.
Hi I'm beginner just got 7 ice orchids and see you do great shows but not happy with feeding when I start feeding as newish from shop. Thinking starting after first bloom finshed. For me start with tea bag to hard water then give orchid Better Bloom, Epsom Salt, and Cal-Mac at a right amount then flush after month I feel happy with what be your thoughts on this. Also tap water leave in tub for 2 days ok to use? Or just get tester?
Hi Lee, I usually use a balanced fertilizer 3 weeks out of the 4. I adjust those doses on 3 occasions: when the orchid is in bloom, when the orchid grows new roots, and when the orchid grows new pseudobulbs. If I have other specific problems, then I use epsom salt or cal-mag. Sometimes I use epsom salt periodically 1 every 3 months to keep routine. If you mix too many products at once it can hurt the orchid because those products react with themselves. So whatever fertilization schedule you follow, be sure to only use one product at a time.

Hi Lee, when I do a plant setup like you described, I still have to leave them in separate pots. This is because the orchids will fight for nutrients between themselves. The biggest, oldest orchid will take over the pot, depriving the newer, younger orchid's roots. By leaving them in their separate pots they grow easier without "competing" with other. They are also easier to treat when it comes to pesticides. I think the idea you want is like an open terrarium, but those don't last long term, as in over 10 years.
