Rejuvenating stressed Orchids Part 2 - Buried stem and stem rot

  • In part 2 we are looking at some more stressed orchids and also a proper sick one as it would seem. If you missed part 1 check it out here • Rejuvenating stressed ...
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Following the example of the first part, we discover some more dehydrated orchids with some surprises.
On eorchid has multiple nodules that stopped growing due to their position in the medium, which was too deep. They are white as they were unable to photosynthesize.
One orchid has stem rot sadly and this is a bit hard to treat, but not impossible. It needs to stay higher up in the pot and also be very ventilated.
As an update on my crown rot orchid, she is producing what I hope is a basal keiki, in any case the infection seems to have stopped and the orchid is not looking like it's dyeing.

My friend gave me my first orchard for a gift a couple of weeks ago. She told me to put three ice cubes in it every Sunday.
. The outside roots started drying out turning gray and brown. I checked out your videos and was amazed on how you are suppose to take care of orchards. I soaked it in warm water for a few minutes, I could see the different in the roots in a very short time. Thank you for the awesome videos. Ill be watching them all.

I recently watched your video, and it might just have saved the life of an orchid that I bought just today. When I got it home and looked it really closely, I saw that some of the surface roots looked very dried up. So I unpotted it, removed all of the potting medium (decayed bark), and discovered that 2/3 of the roots were dead. I’ve just spent 20 minutes trimming all of the dead root material. Then I discovered on the underside of one of the bottom leaves, a cottony-looking material. So I cleaned that up, sprayed hydrogen peroxide all over everything, and repotted with fresh orchid medium. I’ll be watching this one like a hawk. I hope it makes it, it’s so pretty - three flower sprays. Thanks for the tips!!

You saved my orchid! When I first purchased it, I had it re-potted at the garden center, and the person left the poor thing in its plastic bag and put filling around it! Makes sense why I couldn't see the roots! Thank you!!

Well I purchased an orchid from WF. It was a mini phal. As soon as the flowers fell I decided to repot the orchid. Well what a mess. The grower had packed sphagnum moss which was very wet. The plant basically had no roots and there was stem rot. So knowing that there was not much chance of it living I tried spraying with peroxide 3 %. I set the plant over a small glass of water. I sprayed the leafs with water since they were dehydrated do to no root system. Today I used a Q tip in peroxide and scrubbed the stem and small black root bumps with the peroxide. This took off a lot of the black sheath. It looked better. I then put a very small amount of cinnamon on just the stem avoiding the newly growing roots. I dried the stem and spayed just the leafs. I then placed the plant back into a clean glass with clean water. We will see. Wish me luck. Will let you know if this works. Lela

Indeed, some stores don't have the discount policy they just throw them away so they don't encourage people to buy discounted orchids. That's silly IMO but what can you do :(

    • @orchidsadutchy4940
      @orchidsadutchy4940 8 років тому +1

MissOrchidGirl I have a couple of times saved orchids from going to the trash. I told a local flower shop to tell me if they had sometimes orchids going to the trash, that I could come and take them. Then once I got an email from them asking me to come and see. They had a beautiful den. nobile cross still in bloom, going to the trash because the first blooms are already drying and no one would buy it. I got that and 3 large phals still in bloom, because their smaller buds had blasted. They still bloomed for me for some months, so I was so happy for taking them home. But they are so big with huge leaves, so I decided not to save anymore plants from stores, otherwise I would end up with a "phal sanctuary" with no space for anything else. 😂

The baby plant is an exact clone of the mother plant, sometimes flowering while still attached to the mother. The word keiki is Hawaiian for "baby" or "child", literally "the little one". On a Phalaenopsis, a keiki is a small plant growing from one node along the flower stem.

Hey Danny! I have a discussion I want to discuss about with you. when I repot my orchids, when cleaning them for the fresh medium I always do one thing - I remove old leafs and pseudobulbs from the orchids, even tho they are not dried or dead. the reason I do it - well it's simple - I want my orchids to look tidier and to elliminate all possible entries for fungus desieses, that may be present in burried old pseudobulbs and leafs, who tend to rot from the humidity, so I always do it. But what excatly do I remove? from oncidium-type orchids I remove those old pesky little pseudobulb remains, that were present since when the orchid was a seedling. I remove them so my orchid would look tidier, and I would be able to plant it on the top, by avoiding burrying old pesky pseudobulbs in the medium, cause I see this odd patern on all my oncidiums - the rhizome axis is not like 180' right on top of the medium, its more like 30' dagrees tilted to the top, and while growing, for me they seem to kinda grow up, towards more air. Please let me know if you do the same thing I do with my oncidiums, and please tell me if your oncidiums also tend to grow upwards in 30' dagree angle from the top of the medium towards the air. thank you. As for Phals, when repotting I remove all pesky small leaves also, like on your first phal in this video - there was few big good leaves and that one pesky small leaf, that was bad looking and flopping next to the roots. I always remove those pesky small leaves, so phal would look tidier, and when potting up, I wouldn't burry that pesky leaf inside the medium and creating conditions for it to just rot from the base and create perfect conditions for fungus desiese and stem rot. And always, when I create wounds from cutting down old pesky leaves and psbulbs, I always put some cinnamon on the wounds, so the wounds do not rot. So please, let me know, do you do the same things to your orchids while repotting? Please, let me know, maybe you could even make a video about it, who knows. Thank you Danny for all the great information you are providing to us :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

:))) I do the same thing for Oncidiums or Catts or sympodials in general, when I moved out I showed in a video what I cut away, it's here I think ua-cam.com/video/zdfibO5bxx0/v-deo.html :P with Phals I don't cut the leaves, just let them fall naturally. I tend to think monopodials are a bit dangerous when it comes to open wounds. If a sympodial gets an infection it's easy, you cut the section of the plant off and you're done. With monopodials it's not like that, you need to treat the entire orchid for one little infection and I'd rather not do that, especially when it comes to leaves and stem issues (which as I was saying I dislike more than crown rot). If you can make sure to seal the wound properly all is ok, I am not trusting myself enough to cut the bottom leaves and be on my way. When I least expect I know I'll get a stem infection ;)

I have the problems of whiter cotton like fungus in all of my orchid media surface.. also the aerial roots being very dry and dehydrated. I can see many roots get truely dry, dehydrated and fully vanished through the transparent plastic pots... I watered them regularly in the same way you showed in your video. We live in Hamburg, Germany. Now it’s winter time. The temp of outside mostly below -1 but inside the home it is almost in between 12-17dregree Celsius. I moved from the UK to southern Spain. We drove to our new home, we purchased a large van as I took lots of my garden plants, plants in pots and all my Orchids, about 25. My garden plants and potted plants survived, except one - an acer. However, not all my orchids survived especially the mini ones and one that was quite expensive that I had bought from an orchid exhibition, I was so upset, but I didn’t know what to do and had not found you on UA-cam! Some had keikis which dried up when I tried to pot them, even though I tried so hard to keep them moist, but now with your excellent videos and advice maybe I could have done something, but I will never know.
However, from now on your advice is invaluable and since subscribing I have all your daily videos.
I only have 6 left that I am trying to keep alive. I am not sure if it is the lack of humidity that is affecting them? or that I have lost my touch, I hope not.

Thanks for all these videos, so helpful!!! I was gifted a beautiful orchid that I suspect was overwatered in whatever store it came from, plus it was crammed in a tiny pot with zero ventilation (which was bad combined with tightly packed and moldy sphagnum moss.) When I pulled it out to inspect the roots, there was a bunch of root rot. I had to trim off a lot of mushy and moldy roots. I definitely stressed it (for the better in the long run)--it's leaves are drooping slightly. Any suggestions of how I can help keep it hydrated and reduce the stress it's feeling? Or should I anticipate that it will stay a little droopy until it builds up its root system and adapts to the new media?

  • @littleminna

Thank you so much these videos are so much more helpful than everything I've read online years ago, now I actually see what you're talking about. Orchids are my favorite plant, also because they're the only ones that have ever survived my home. I forget to water plants. 😣 I know it's bad. I've got a question, I have a keki that I got off a plant that died many years ago. The keki is alive, in it's own pot, it's survived all these years but it never grew particularly. It's still small and it's never had more than 2 leaves, the moment a 3rd leave comes one leave dries out (dies). It's also never had any flowers. What am I doing wrong? Apart from the fact that I do know I'm not good at watering and I haven't repotted, it's been in the same medium for years...

In an introductory video of yours form 3 years ago, you state you prefer to use clear plastic pots, and bark as a potting medium, but here you're using clay pots (which you said you don't like because the roots cling to the pot) and a potting medium I don't recognise... Could you help me and clarify, please...? Many thanks! Incidentally, I am an avid but amateur keeper of phalaenopses, but your videos are amazingly encouraging and helpful!

Hi, hydrogen peroxide of up to 3% doesn't need dilution, higher than that it does and I used osmosis water (distilled is ok too). I wear gloves because I don't like dirt and splinters under my finger nails, also I don;t like touching insects that might live in the pot :) here is a video on why I prefer clay pots ua-cam.com/video/z0y7-wzBRKQ/v-deo.html going up a size solely depends on the orchid and its growth type, there are mini orchids or medium orchids and large orchids, so the size needs to be chosen depending on each individual orchid and its habits. Here is a video in which I talk about my clay medium and how it works ua-cam.com/video/cPjRkhWOivg/v-deo.html

Hi. I have been bitten by the orchid bug. I've heard it is not dangerous but that it can cause loss of weight especially in your wallet region. All kidding aside, love your videos and hope you can help me with a problem. I think my plants are not blooming because they do not get a cool temperature at night. I don't know how to correct it. Do you have any creative ways to accomplish this ?

How do you decide what type of pot to put your orchids in. Some of your videos you have them in a clear pot with holes and an additional pot, and others in a clay pot. Very new to all this. I have 3 orchids now and one ceramic pot that i was going to use and the secondary pot, but the plastic pot was too big, so I left in that for the moment, until I exchange the pot. I would like to just put in one pot if its ok. Just trying to understand.

MissOrchidGirl - well I've seen a lot of videos, and I purchased a dendro phalenopsis..she was very dry and I purchased it, there are canes and one cane I already cut because was mushy, but there's another one that has a black area...and I don't know if I should keep it our not...oh, I did rub the cinnamon on the tip...do you have a video on how do I know what's a good or bad cane? Thank you so much for your videos...The phalaneop...I rescued from my neighbor is doing great, she's growing new leaves and bloomed for at least a month...I think the blue jays in my back yard like my plant and they continue to come and I saw them standing on her.....I am worried about the dendro but I see a video right now..."How to deal with sick Dendrobium orchids"

Just curious, but why did you decide not to apply cinnamon? I'm dealing with a very sick orchid myself right now, that has a nasty case of root rot that has spread terribly. I'm down to two leaves but I haven't given up yet I'm trying a lot of different things in your videos are extremely helpful!

Should I repot now or after roots have developed on the baby's. I am concerned about mother plant. I have enjoyed you channel and I have learned lots.

How often would you suggest repotting an orchid? The last time I repotted mine was 10 months ago but now it looks a bit stressed with flowers blooming and leaves are slightly wrinkly. So I am thinking would I need to provide fresh medium to it and cut potential dead roots? I water the plant usually every 10-14 days, letting water run through the pot and it is in a transparent plastic pot with holes on to allow air flow and away from sunlight.

Hi there. I have a sick orchid. Very close to the last orchid you potted in this video. What I see on my orchid roots are that the covering is dry and limp and when I try to take that off, I found a thin thread like root under the covering. Should I cut the thread off the sick orchid for it to become healthy?

My Phal is down to one yellow leaf and one newish looking green leaf bought cheap at a Nursery who had overwatered it. I cut off the sad flowers, gave it a new pot, removed some old roots, added a specialist orchid mix, and now letting it dry out - I hope I have down what it needs to survive. I am also keeping it inside to stay warm. As I am so new to this type of orchid, do you think it will survive with one leaf, and at what point do you give into the death process?

  • @hollyquinn7786

Really appreciate all your videos, as I am new to the orchid hobby. I recently purchased a phal with 3 spikes, deep yellow flowers with some pink. The leaves and spikes are such a bright green, it almost looks fake. Is this due to the light it was exposed to (new to the store) or a different kind of phal? Also, my orchids are in my master bathroom, at an east-facing "frosted" window.

    Hello,
I recieved about 5 orchids from my now passed Grandmother, most are over grown with "air roots" and there are 2 smaller ones I did not even know where orchids,I belive they suffer over watering and All of them extremely temperature exposure, when I brought from one home to another,it was maybe 18 degrees out doors. Of course flowers fell off in 2 days ,it a newb. At orchids,
Watching your videos I believe they are stressed and neglected and horribly in need of repotting..
My question is: if they are air plants ,can they be grown in a hollowed log? And should I use fertilizer and orchid soil mix ? Thanks for your time .

I need help with my first orchid. It was doing well for so long. But recently I noticed the roots weren't as green and since it hadn't been in bloom for a few months and had already grown it's new leaf I repotted it once and it was fine for a couple weeks but then I noticed the leaves were all yellow at the base. After a lot of reading I think it was either heat stress and/or root rot. I cut all the old roots off that weren't good. It has one small new root left and some which aren't so good in sections but then seem better at other sections. It lost 2 of its 3 leaves and now has only one single large leaf which is yellow in the center. I repotted again in a much smaller pot, but am unsure of how to proceed. It is in miracle gro brand bark potting mix, and I have moved it to my bedroom which is the only air conditioned room of the house ..Im not sure if I should mist it or not, if it should stay where it's air conditioned (69F) 8-12 hours a day, or how much light to give it? I took pictures but I don't know where to ask for help other than here?

+MissOrchidGirl I treated it with hydrogen peroxide 3% yesterday incase it had rot in places and I cleaned out the water that was left in the crown and then put cinnamon in it to dry it. Today when I woke up it had a pool of water in the crown it's like it's discharging it's water into its crown I dried it up again. I really need to know what to do :(
