i am wondering how difficult yi ling (shu) is in other titles... my game was mainly DW3 and it was the hardest battle i can remember in the whole franchise...didnt play other titles that much so i dont remember yi ling, but i think i would if it was THAT hard... in DW3 i ended up playing this stage on the hardest difficulty with shu over and over again, i had a blast with it... all allied officers dying in the first 5 minutes and then standing alone against the whole enemy army, in the end Zhuge Liang arriving and the music and battle changing from depressing to encouraging...
There is a battle in DW8 Wei’s Story that IS similar to changban (and like why Changban wasn’t in the battle for Wei’s Story), but how the stage progresses is very similar to Changban. The battle is called “Pursuit at Nanjun” and Zhang Fei also defends the bridge in that battle too (only difference is that there’s an alternate path so the fight with Zhang Fei is optional) and the defeat condition is the same as in a changban stage as well.
Reason for Zhao Yun being crazy is that he also has one of his moments in this battle, he goes back solo in the middle of Cao Cao's army, not once, twice. To save Liu Shan. After which Liu Bei in a show of loyalty back, to his general, throws Liu Shan to the ground, lamenting how he would have lost a brother should he have died. Edit: as soon as I wrote this I continued the video and you immediately say Zhao Yun has a moment in this battle. So I suppose my comment was not needed xD
In Dynasty Warriors 8, stages that are only playable with one force can be played from the other forces' POV through Free Mode. Chang Ban with Wei's forces can be played this way.
@ShadowOfCicero I double checked it myself and you are correct. They never added the Wei version of Changban to DW8. They did, however, add an alternate version of it in Xtreme Legends called Clash at Changban. The fight on the bridge against Zhang Fei still occurs, but there aren't any cutscenes, unfortunately.
It really feels like it should be there, considering most levels unlock the other side for free mode after you clear them. Hell, you unlock the pursue Sun Ce battle for Wei's forces, but not Chang Ban?
I know for me, I jumped from DW2 to DW4 to DW6 and recently got back into my DW8 steam edition. I never really cared about the Renbu system in DW6, I just felt like it was weird and then eventually that it was fine. I always enjoyed these game for the grind and the movesets of different weapons, well and the history. I don’t know how many hours I spent looking through the dates and stuff in the encyclopedia. These games really are their own niche.
i liked dw6 despite its flaws. and i agree Zhang Fei in dw 6 looks the best. not showing anything "mystic" about his power but just his skill with his polearm fending off cao caos army just looks amazing.
Oh god... i'm getting PTSD... his DW5 4th weapon requirement, which is a reenactment of Zhang Fei's Chang Ban bridge stand.. back when i did this as a teen/tween. They say you can do it in two-player... but no, i did it alone and i get the flashback that i said when i failed "even if a single pixel touches the bridge pixel, you fail the 4th weapon requirement, you lose... good day, sir."
Same for me, remembering have been playing it on the highest difficulty and it was a real pain. But for people ( including myself) who have been growing up with battletoads, alex the kid and all the games of nes, mega drive , master system it was ok difficult wise 😅
Watching the live adaptations e.g Three Kingdoms 2010 I reckon Zhao Yun was the bigger star of the Chang Ban battle, in fact he literally has multiple "Dynasty Warriors" moments in the show while the idea of Zhang Fei was to be a ploy to make Cao Cao think that there must be an ambush beyond the bridge given he was there alone, really worth checking out the live adaptions for a different perspective on the era.
this is one of the reasons why i love DW6. I started the DW series with DW6 and I remember how iconic was the soundtrack for Chang Ban. plus, i really love Zhang Fei's cutscenes (for me, DW6 has the best cutscenes throughout the whole series. Or maybe I'm just biased because of the nostalgic feeling)
In defense of DW7; it may hold your hand but it really does tell a killer story, that moment in Wu's story where Sun Ce was being haunted by phantoms and Sun Jian's Phantom walks out from behind that tent gives me chills. Not to mention that they could actually kill a character you were playing as mid battle, none of that "Oh I'm injured but I'm fine" *dies at the end of the battle by falling backwards into somebody's arms* that DW8 did. I even think the clone weapon problem is mostly fixed by 7XL, and all the new modes it adds in addition to conquest mode kind of makes me fine with the lack of free mode.
The parry mechanic was indeed introduced back in DW4. It had invul frames (meaning you could phase through projectiles) during the proper counter window, and the hitboxes lasted throughout the entire animation even during recovery animation. In 5, it got nerfed to have a bit more recovery on the whiff animation, most parry counter animations were changed and the hitbox no longer was active on recovery frames. It got reworked in DW6 to have 2 different versions, a normal button version and charge button version. DW2 had counter attacks done with L1+S which was done when you suffer from any blockstun. However, they cost Musou to use. DW3 changes L1+S to be a pushblock instead which can be done continuously as soon as one is inputted properly upon again, receiving any blockstun, but it doesn't interrupt the animations of the attacker nor does it cost Musou like in DW2. And via playing on my emulator the OG Japanese versions and with already a wealth of experience from DW4XL, my favorite classic DW game, DW5 did indeed tone down the AI overall.

It was DW4 for me, a friend introduced me to it and I got into the history through this game is incredible that once upon a time this people existed. I remember facing lu bu at hulao gate got destroyed in about 5 hits, there was a way to make him weaker
I love the idea of comparing the objectives of each main story beat that each game shares like apparently this(brand new to dynasty warriors main series and lore entirely more or less lol)
For difficulty, I would choose DW6 (he's in dark red GOD MODE like Lu Bu at Hu Lao Gate)🔥 For animation, I think DW5 is the best (great voice line and btw, he literally goes Super Saiyan right from the cutscene)😂
I confirm the Wei also had a changban scenario as I remember playing dw8 on the Wei side and there being a warning that Zhou Yan spawned in the top right village
For DW8, at least for the one on steam, you can play the Chang Ban stage in free mode from Cao Cao's side. Its likely part of the XL portion and the stage is Clash at Chang Ban, but there is no bridge cutscene. The normal stage seems to only be playable on Shu side.
Yes, that level was added in Extreme Legends, so it wasn't in the vanilla DW8. As the Steam version come with Extreme Legends included, Steam player will always have that level.
Hehehe, well done for this challenge. Dynasty Warriors 6 was my first entry to the series and Changban was usually the 1st battle to jump in when we play during secondary school break. But mostly playing on Liu Bei's side, speedrun the stage to escape, the faster time Liu Bei escapes, the better. Again, as DW6 is the 1st I played, the Renbu system didn't bother me much, spamming charge attacks then dodge if needed, repeat, really the safer tactic we did before. I do prefer Zhang Fei's cutscene from DW5 though, but 6's really good on its own right. Decent challenge is not enough, we'll wait for a real challenge.
good video and with my fav dynasty warriors char as well zhang liao. makes me wonder if you do other cutsuene monents like zhang liao defence of he fei where he was outnumbered by wu
Worth noting - the Parry Mechanic as it exists in 4 did not exist in 3. Instead, 3 had a different mechanic where you could instead simply push the enemy backwards with similarly-timed button-presses. Spamming the button could even do so multiple times on a single hit.
I miss Zhang Liao's guando/pudao. The twin axes are a neat weapon... for someone else. Like Dian Wei, considering twin-axes is what he was described as using in the books. Then give Dian Wei's axe to someone with a preposterous or crap weapon. And I forgot about duels in DW4, seeing that footage really brought me back to getting insta-killed by Lu Bu when I foolishly agreed to duel him my first time playing. What a random old memory to dig up. And I really miss the aggression that random soldiers showed in DW4 and DW5. Back in those games a random peon could legit kill you if you'd been weakened by an officer.
Fought well u have That is no easy feat especially being at level one and the big risk of Liu bei Escaping I don’t think I could’ve pulled this one off Hats to u Man U the🐐🔥
Zhao Yun being insanely strong tracks, since Changban really is his shining moment. In RoTK, Zhao Yun saves Liu Bei's baby while fighting for his life behind Cao Cao's lines. Zhang Fei appears at the bridge and shouts so loud that nobody wants to approach, giving Zhao Yun the opportunity to escape. Cao Cao surmised that Zhang Fei was baiting them for an ambush and was reluctant to approach, but he eventually does. But by then, it was too late. Also Liu Bei was so happy that Zhao Yun survived that he yeets Liu Shan.
I guess DW7 Zhang Fei spent most of his strength to keep the firewall burning haha My favorite fight is Dw4, the ost is sick, Zhang Fei has the Boss aura and the cutscene is interchangeable
When it comes to cutszene nothing beats DW5s version for me thats for sure. Speaking of difficulty yeah in the games its surprising how it varies i know late stages of 3 are brutal compared to later entries. It might be due to the amount of archers or heavier hitters but to Chang Ban it does show at times where the game places them. In 4, 5 and 7 they are really early on compared to other entries where its middle. Hell in 3 its one of the few thats already unlocked in free mode if i remember correctly. Great video and one of my favourite moments in DW
Other than DW2, DW6 imo had the hardest Zhang Fei bridge stand, mostly because of the Renbu System adding the fact that you always start at your weakest and you have less than half of your moveset to work with. I remember tackling him in Xiahou Dun story and not being able to kill him.
You can really tell how much the series has changed overtime by watching this clip, Dynasty Warriors 2 was simply asking for a death wish if you rushed into massive hordes of enemy lines alone, the difficulty was challenging and that’s what made the earlier entries really fun and made you feel a great sense of satisfaction when you overcome it, DW2 and the later stages of DW3 when the AI gets buffed and enemy archers come into play was heart in mouth stuff, that’s what made me fall in love with the series during the PS2 era of DW2-5. Then you come to the later entries such as SW4, WO4, DW7-8 and your characters are so overpowered like supernatural beings that can clear thousands of enemy units in under 2 mins and that sense of having a difficult challenge has completely gone, it feels like Koei (Omega Force) is trying to cater more towards more people by easing up the challenge of the Warriors series to make you feel like an overpowered demi-god. I still love the series and always will, but I wish they would bring back the AI of the earlier entries because these days even on Chaos difficulty it feels like such a breeze. I know they can make tough challenging games, just look at Ni-oh and Wo Long, I’m not saying make it to that degree because it would be near impossible in a Warriors game but something like an oldschool difficulty such as DW2-3 would be nice for long time fans.
Ayo heads up, in Dynasty Warriors 3, the only reason why the horses kick you off, is because youre not high enough rank. When you first start out the only horse you can ride is the brown one with a boring saddle. You can eventually ride the other horses you just need to level up a bit
To answer your question a 9:10 Changban is more iconic moment for Zhao Yun than Zhang Fei even. Immortalized as 1 man breakthrough to save Liu Bei's son. Zhang Fei was just there to cover his retreat lol. Zhang Fei's never really been my favorite, and I personally don't have much to say about this moment, but good job on trudging through DW2. As for any suggestions for other iconic moments/battles, not entirely sure, I was gonna pick Zhao Yun saving Liu Shan, but that's not in as many games, so maybe Chi Bi I guess? not sure how you would rank them, but it's an idea.
Zhang Fei honestly in the earlier PS2 era games, ESPECIALLY from my personal experience in DW3, had VERY narrow hitboxes on his base attack string. Sucked far too much.
Dynasty Warriors 2 was just monster in its own right. Archers were really strong, officers were terrifyingly strong, and normal soldiers were eager to put a sword in you. The boost/health bonus on knockback was so annoying, you had to play against it. Never do the 4 attack combo, but do 3, and attack again or block and parry (yeah, that was a thing.). Musous weren't a safe point either. You had to be careful one did not start a musou at every point. (experienced many loses against Lu Bu hard because of this.) I miss the old strong AI from older games.
I've found that the best way to deal with DW2 officers healing after being knocked down is to not knock them down at all. So I just spam my 3 hit regular attack at them non stop. It keeps them on their feet and I can just keep hitting them infinitely until they're defeated. Even works on Lu Bu in that game.
So yes, I was correct. You go to free mode, select stage, select Shu story mode stages, go to those stages that are the bottom most and there is Clash at Chang Ban. I just lost to Zhang Fei with Yue Ying lvl 49, tho idk if I am not playing it on hard
Its funny how the myth differs from real history. The romance was written by a shu fanboy and apologist that twisted many events to make Shu look like heroes, when in reality they were often awful people (zhang fei was an alcoholist and child rapist, seriously) In the Romance, zhang fei was said to hold back an entire army by fighting alone on a bridge, whereas in real history the only thing that happened was that the Shu army destroyed a bridge before Wei could catch them and Zhang Fei started to shout insults from the other side Also, of course the army of Liu Bei weren't helping peasants escape, they were actually bandits who were fleeing after having plundered and terrorized the region
I believe you CAN play DW8 Changban on the Wei side, but you'd need to go into free mode and have access to enemy side maps Even then, those battles usually dont have much of any extra events and stuff like that, but it is technically playable
Have you ever read The Ravages of Time? It’s a manga about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Zhang Fei’s character is a lot cooler in that series than in dynasty warriors imo
Some of us stopped playing once DW6 came out & thought that was enough. DW9 was almost as bad per several Reddit posts. If DW10 is a reality, what can they do about this scene that’ll make it more special?
Can't you play as the other side of a battle after you beat it in Story Mode? I'm pretty sure you could do that for Chang Ban as well if you select it in Free Mode after beating it, a lot of them feel a bit more rushed than the main version though I haven't tried enough of the other side battles to know for sure. Edit: I mean DW8
your wrong about changban in dw9. liu bei is not in a castle and he is running. he got away from me because i did not fast travel and did all the side quest missions. he will get on a boat and you will fail the game. you can block this by destroying his ship first which i did when i reloaded.
Real reason Pewdiepie avoids bridges
You see its not the troll under the bridge, its a bearded drunkard man with a serpent pike from dw6 or dw2 on top of the bridge.
Zhang Fei kinda fit the criteria of his forbidden word.

The boost/health bonus on knockback was so annoying, you had to play against it. Never do the 4 attack combo, but do 3, and attack again or block and parry (yeah, that was a thing.). Musous weren't a safe point either. You had to be careful one did not start a musou at every point. (experienced many loses against Lu Bu hard because of this.) I miss the old strong AI from older games.
dw6 is the most fun to play.
Zhao Yun is defending baby Liu Chan in this battle so it makes sense why he is so insane
Zhao Yun at chang ban bridge battle is also iconic but he didn't get credit in some game but In dynasty warriors 6 they kinda did
Thank you.
DW2 has a counter attack, too.
Dw6 was like the step child no one talks about 😆
Best series on UA-cam
Thanks my friend😁
My kinda slop. Thank you.
I adore Zhang Fei. Good video topic.
A Chad Move Indeed!
Bro put more effort in this than dynasty warriors has done in 8 years
Dynasty Warriors 3 will always be my favorite.
Maybe the Wei ver. of ChangBan is in DW8 Xtreme Legends?
Can't you play changban as wei once you beat all story mode battles? That is how I played as yuan shu against liu bei in lu bu story mode mission
The romance was written by a shu fanboy and apologist that twisted many events to make Shu look like heroes, when in reality they were often awful people (zhang fei was an alcoholist and child rapist, seriously)
In the Romance, zhang fei was said to hold back an entire army by fighting alone on a bridge, whereas in real history the only thing that happened was that the Shu army destroyed a bridge before Wei could catch them and Zhang Fei started to shout insults from the other side
Also, of course the army of Liu Bei weren't helping peasants escape, they were actually bandits who were fleeing after having plundered and terrorized the region
I believe you CAN play DW8 Changban on the Wei side, but you'd need to go into free mode and have access to enemy side maps
Even then, those battles usually dont have much of any extra events and stuff like that, but it is technically playable
Actually Zhang fei if i fight others officers he most scariest general
Dudde dw2 was one of the hardest games i played as a kid, but it was so enjoyable trying to beat it
15:03 - 15:09
This was fricking hilarious.
lol imagine getting your ass kicked by a dude who had to swim to get to you
Man he was a pain in the ass. Still rather deal with him than lu bu
Dw2 is a nightmare
Part 4 is my favorite.
Alright a new video im excited to watch
Better late than never😆
bro, where i was younger, i lvl up against the yellowe turbans too. It was really hard to fight without good stats
dynasty warriors content ive missed it!
Love the aesthetic & atmosphere of DW6 👌🏼
Please do Zhou Yu he is the best and my favorite
I miss having bodyguards and being able to customize them! Wish they would bring them back :(
Sick DW vid bud!
You need to juggle opponents 😂
Have you ever read The Ravages of Time? It’s a manga about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Zhang Fei’s character is a lot cooler in that series than in dynasty warriors imo
That sounds really cool, I gotta check it out
please, what’s the track you started with???? the nostalgia is powerful. lol
Man Dynasty Warriors 2 was too difficult
DW4XL has him actually play that bridge scene out. Which is my favorite.
I played 5 up only wish I could play the older ones
DW 6 was the sweetspot of the franchise, everything else prior was kinda rough, everything past it too easy and forgettable
DW 5 was the sweetspot. 6 is the one that ruined everything
Some of us stopped playing once DW6 came out & thought that was enough. DW9 was almost as bad per several Reddit posts. If DW10 is a reality, what can they do about this scene that’ll make it more special?
Little s*** 😂
I'm sorry but that was just funny when you said it😅
Which DW was it that Gan Ning used daggers?
Dw6
You can do Wei's version of Changban by playing Free Mode in DW8.
Could you find an alternative to saying "raw dogging it"?
Would you consider "fucking it without lube" an acceptable alternative?
in this game your weapon has weight, the lighter the weapon the faster the animation

Dude i think we are about the same age 😂
Dynasty 4 the best in the series
Does anyone know where i can get any of the games for my pc 6 or lower 😢. U can by 7 and up on steam
your wrong about changban in dw9. liu bei is not in a castle and he is running. he got away from me because i did not fast travel and did all the side quest missions. he will get on a boat and you will fail the game. you can block this by destroying his ship first which i did when i reloaded.
