I wish he didn't say 'just kidding' afterwards. Because it's true. For me DW3 till DW5 were great! Afterwards it just became a solo hack and slash fest. Hardly any stakes. I remember being so happy and excited when I finally got one hundred kills. It was tough and special. After DW5 you would get like 10+ kills with a couple of hits. A thousand kills was nothing. It got so easy even when you were playing on hard or very hard. The games lost soul and the characters got less and less individual attention.
This video made me realize I had Dynasty Warriors 2 when it first came out. Makes me wish I still had it or knew were it was. Having a working copy and memory card of these games would be great.
@@CCootauco lol, same thought here. I was already in high school when DW3 came out, so I got a good chuckle out of @TayjonTheGreekWarrior_YT talking about being a "fossil"

My favorite phrase was " it's Lu Bu, Lu Bu has come to destroy us"! I laughed pursued Lu Bu and game over LMAO, me and my brother thought it was a glitch but we found out real fast😂😂😂
In my native language "Cao" is very similar to the word "Itchy" and "Pee" is very close to the word "Vagina". Put together was a slur that was commonly used to describe "Sluts". And when words were repeated it represented the adjective "Very". So "Cao Cao"... **Ahem** The Very Itchy Dude has a son & named him slut. Oh and fun fact. Lubu, which has no meaning in my language. The first part "Lu" is very similar to the word "The" in my language. An adjective used commonly to describe an object or something. So as a kid after countless hours losing to LUBU. I remembered there was a slang in my language for vagina. "Po"... And thus "LUPO" was born. As a Kid, I thought this was beautiful 😂
@@RYROSmetaldefender yup. That's what makes it even funnier. Not just be cause it sounds like something else but also because they butchered the localization 😀
I miss the old DW's , the PS 2 golden age, where it felt like you where just a part of the army, and had to work together with your force to secure victory instead of the solo victory lap it later became. In DW 2, the army can even route the entire map of the first Yellow Turban stage all by itself when you do nothing, though they are unable to land the killing blow on the boss.
Couldn’t agree more, 2&3 were the best for me. They started getting awful after like 5. I’ll never forget the time all the other generals actually killed Lu bu at hu lao gate without my help, like 10 major characters were all fighting him at once in DW3
We started at Dynasty Warriors 3, back in the day me and my friends called the red life meter to musou, run away and repeat strategy - "Run like a B1tcht". We always had a blast.
My first encounter with Lu Bu was basically this; None of the characters names stood out to me yet because I was new to the franchise and everyone's name mostly blended together to my eyes/ears so I mostly ignored what officers screamed because I didn't know who was talking to whom. I choose Dian Wei (I called him Dawn Wayne) because his name stood out just enough that I knew if someone was talking to or about me. Put a lot of time into this character over the series and is kind of a favorite because of it. Doesn't hurt that he looks cool in most iterations as well. Anyway, I had like 80% of my health when I approached some guy (Lu Bu) and I knocked him over with a jump attack. He then did the same thing to me getting up and I died instantly. I had put in some grind up to this point and I'm half sure I was playing on Easy too and I was like 30+ minutes into the level to slow roll my way through the levels (as intended?). Oof; So you learn the name Lu Bu and avoid him until you're a much higher level. Eventually you get a feel for how strong you need to be at minimum to attempt nearing Lu Bu because you can absolutely cheese him. Generally the Shin Musou adds that burning damage which is a majority of where the damage comes from in certain games. I can't believe how much of this franchise I've played but I started to steer away from it when they made their Renbu system version and kind of ruined all my favorite characters and everyone had the same 4 weapons. :(
To be fair, yes, defeating Lü Bu while in low level, or just level 1, should have it's achievement. Lü Bu is broken, I don't quite remember, but mostly, he is broken and OP. 1. Using Spear, but handling it like it's a long stick, holding it on the end of the spear, as if it has no weight whatsoever. Even the best lancer can't comprehend using a spear like it's a stick, he is a berserker class alright. 2. His move, I don't remember which one, but one of them is basically helicopter swinging his spear horizontally over and over while giving you stun, boy, even in level 1, a Lü Bu you used has better chance to defeat his own self as enemy, far more than other characters you know. His move set are designed to be OP. 3. I don't remember which one again, but the game has effect like fire, wind or ice, or lightning and wind blast. My Lü Bu casted offensive wind aura around himself while attacking , without even using any elemental perk from the equipment.
@@FuraFaolox oh, that. I know Chinese, a little. KOEI misread how to spell his name in English , 呂佈 or in simplified Chinese would be 吕布 (Lǚ Bù). First of all English fication of his Chinese name is kinda meh, his Bu is spelt in Chinese like "P" not "B". His surname Lü is not read as L and normal English "U", But rather special kind of I from Chinese Language. In simple way of saying his name is read with special i instead of normal u, kinda like double i (ii), that is if I read it correctly. His name should be spelled kinda like "Lii Pu", and that doesn't even do justice, his name should also be read with intonation. But then again it's for a game, so it's doesn't matter much. I just prefer to write his surname with Lü , because that's what it actually is. Fun fact, 鲁班 Lǔ Bān, a legendary master craftsman, called the father of Chinese carpentry, his surname is one of the surname you should spell with L and U.
Love that grapple move, and another mechanic like duel and counter. You want to break my guards eat my counter, enemy want to guard eat my guard break move or grapple. Then there is lu bu: oh you attack or counter me let me remind you on how weak your attacks are
I was looking for this comment because Wo Long Lu Bu gave me as much trouble as he did in Dynasty Warriors. Only game I had no problem with LuBu was the Warriors Orochi series
This has turned out to be a very interesting experiment! What I appreciate about the Warriors series more with years is the opportunities to replay the same events in different games, looking at them from slightly different perspectives and angles every time. Hence, I've found this video so satisfying!
That's the best part of playing historical games, there's so many different ways one can present historical eras and each time can highlight new ideas and perspectives of these figures, their legacy, and their story.
Beating Lu Bu with a Level 7 character on Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2 on a beginner character with low level officers. Like it's actually a very satisfying achievement and I bloody love doing that. I always play on the hardest difficulty for the "Fuck around and find out.".
Dynasty Warriors 4 was the one that introduced me to the series and to this day its remained my favorite in the series. Just so you know, Yuan Shao tells you to "Ignore Lu Bu, Pursue Dong Zhou!" When his army arrives at Hu Lao Gate. Its possible to miss the voice line since it only triggers once he reaches the gate, and he doesnt begin his charge until Hu Lao Gate is breached, and then it takes him about 2 or 3 minutes to reach the gate.
Same, I played dw4 on a demo disc At funcoland and immediately I liked the combat and tone of the game, it was both silly but kind of gritty at the same time. My first dw I owned was xtreme legends 3. But my favorite was 4s xtreme mode. I stopped after dw5 after 6 changed the characters moves and weapons.
I stole Dynasty Warriors 4 from Blockbuster. Rented and never returned...never got charged for it either. My Cousin and I played it...then years later, my sister and I played it. My Sister and I hate each other and never get along...but we got along playing co-op dynasty warriors.
@@justinlast2lastharder749 You can google Blockbuster. Here is what it say. Blockbuster ceased most of its operations in 2014, but the last remaining Blockbuster store in the world is located in Bend, Oregon. So it is possible that Blockbuster was struggling so therefore, before 2014, they don't have time to check records on what products customer rented. Since Dynasty Warrior 4 was in the market like in 2003. Blockbuster at that time must of fought to defend their business and couldn't keep it. So it sounds like Blockbuster was so busy fighting for a right to keep their business to a point where they don't have time to ask customer to return it which means they don't have time to charge
I started with 4 not knowing what i was doing besides just run around and hit stuff. I was like 4 or 5. When i first fought lu bu and saw how much in 1 hit my health drained i got scared and screamed a little. My dad looked over and said "Lu Bu?" And i said yes. He just laughed and said Good luck.
Funny thing is... There is a way to kind of cheese lu bu in 4... if you manage to knock him up, you can perpetually lock him up there if you can time it right.
My first DW was DW3. It's still my favourite and to me it has the hardest Lu Bu challenge of them all. That game had ragdoll physics like crazy and he loved to use them. Plus, even with a True Musou attack, he was still hyper armoring most hits.
DW2: hit him three times so he's not knocked down DW6: whack him from a horse DW7: in Wu/Shu's version, he stands in front of the gate and flees if his health gets low. In Wei's version, he appears after the gate is broken down and lunges after Yuan Shao. So, he essentially flees from the two Hua Xiong killers and not Xiahou Yuan.
If you were in chaos mode, Lu Bu won't flee in Wei version of story mode. If you listened to Cao Cao and went after Dong Zhou, Lu Bu will already kill Yuan Shao. That is assuming if you were in chaos mode. Lu Bu will fight until he is defeated. Lu Bu is not the running type in Wei version. So if you wanted to let Lu Bu live, you need to be in more easier difficulty instead of chaos mode.
So. This is going to sound really funny to hardcore fans lol My first encounter with Lu Bu was in Dynasty Warrior's Advance where he appears at level 10 on the very first Level of the Wu and Shu stories. You are level 1. I didn't know you could retreat from battles as a kid so, I got stuck on Hu Lao Gate because of a Lu Bu for like Hour's. He's unreasonably OP in this because the combat is so simple, you can't block his attacks, he has a weapon with Fire Damage on it and almost every hit from him knocks you down. Luckily in the Shu Version your supposed to basically just stall and retreat from him, in the Wu version he will usually ignore the player in favor of your allies but you can still end up in his way and then he'll actively pursue you. And no, there isn't a line saying "DO NOT Pursue Lu Bu." Edit: It's also plausible that if your REALLY bad, like I was as a kid, Lu Bu just plows through all your forces on the Wu Side before you can even reach the end and cause you to lose lol Damn being a kid and bad at games is hilarious.
Honestly if AI didn't slow the game down to a crawl the idea of the NPC units being able to overwhelm you because you're in too deep into enemy lines is a great idea that should be explored further. Maybe if you make the commanding troops more active. Like commanding characters to attack a fort or reinforce a location to move enemy troops away from where you are so your units can push harder into lighter defended places and so lower morale. Though I don't think I can trust Koei tecmo to get the balance and mechanics right.
@@irfanhandonobecause that’s what makes warrior games fun? There games where they try to actively make it this crazy mechanic heavy, super difficult game it doesn’t work well. It ends up being boring as fuck. Dynasty warriors is a power fantasy game it’s not a strategy game if I want that I’ll play fucking total war or stellaris or literally anything else
@@t3gaming902 it is though, that’s the whole point of the series. Go play a different game then if you don’t like it. Thats like being upset that call of duty has too many guns in it.
Lu Bu was a menace in DW4! As kids, we considered the Lu Bu fight as our greatest challenge for weeks. The way he gets you one on one was legendary. Gotta admit we only wanted his horse
If you wanted a tougher fight in Dynasty Warriors 8, then you need to ignore Lu Bu, and instead defeat Diao Chan first. This will make Lu Bu really mad, gets tons of buffs, and hunting you down like a rabid dog throughout the whole map until you die.
Lu Bu really was the original Him. The low health musou trick was always the way to go, especially on higher difficulties. I think 4 was truly the peak, the duel system was so fun. Still had bodyguards and your custom character could be used to play the story. Just so airtight imo. Great video!
About pursuing Lu Bu on DW2 and hearing your reasons of lowering difficulty, and putting aside my bit of disappointment, I fully understand your point. I am happy that you would come back to DW2 to pursue Lu Bu again with Standard Difficulty.
DW6 has grapple moves that make Lu Bu flinch, IIRC you hit one of your attack buttons while blocking... It's how I remember dealing with him, took forever though
Banger video honestly; DW4 was my starting point and I was scared of Lu Bu for years after lol. That being said, I'd probably have tried this challenge with Guan Yu, since I think his fighting style's changed the least between games. When I saw you pick Xiahou Dun, I knew 6 was gonna be a problem if only because of his insane weapon change.
I’ll always remember the battle of Hulao gate encounter with Lu Bu from DW4, that defined the entire character for me then and there when I was a kid, I honestly miss a lot of the more subtler difficulties of Warriors games from back then, as well as the emphasis on pushing up with your armies on the various frontline conflicts of the map.
I've fought against Lu Bu in DW2 on normal. He's hard. In fact, he won't even flinch at the first few attacks you throw at him, and he'll kill you in a few hits.
He got me with his 4th charge attack once and sent me flying... I stood up and watched my health bar drain CONTINUOUSLY from that one attack before my eyes while I was still moving around not being attacked!! I was like "WTF?!" Then defeated screen 😐😑
I tried the same thing on hardest difficulty to really challenge myself. Finally gave up after months of frustration. I was able to handle him pretty well that those duels would actually look like I was the superior fighter compared to Lu Bu. The only thing I was unable to overcome was his health regeneration. It always seemed like my Musou attack would end 1 or 2 hits away from killing him, then he got full health. I was thinking there must be a sweet spot where you can get his health down to just enough that would not trigger regenaration, then you would have to back off and survive to get your Musou charged up, then deliver a perfect combo that hits every single slash and thrust, no whiff at all, to finish him off. Never found that sweet spot 😤
@@HoangNguyen-rd6qy If you were in DW7 playing in chaos mode, you can just take advantage of the weapons that comes with abilities. You just need to use autoheal and auto musou. Lu Bu will likely use a body armor but it won't protect him from musou attacks. If you were playing DW7 while in chaos mode, you will be forced to kill Lu Bu in order to protect your nobleman partner.
A fine video and a good look back at the entirety of the series as well. I hold many of the same opinions as you. DW4 is by far the hardest and, in my opinion, the most iconic Lu Bu fight. He challenges you to a duel in which you have almost no chance of winning, and only surviving by the skin of your teeth. If you then decide to fight him afterwards its best to keep allied officers away from him as he will drill through them like they're paper.
Oh man this is a blast from the past I didn't expect to find tonight. Man I almost completely forgot about Dynasty Warrior's 2 bodyguard feature. That was one of those small things that made tiny me feel like a commander. This must be a sign that I must pursue, Lu Bu. It's the only way. THIS HAS BEAM MORE ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE INTO MY BRAIN, I JUST REMEMBERED MYSTIC HEROES. I'm going to dissolve into dust now.
@@hydra7094 yeah wasn't that system something like you could have the non playable officers basically tag along with you? I remember that one in a much vaguer sense.

DW2 was one the first games i got for PS2 as a kid . my friend cheese Lu Bu buy running in circles and using the bow. it took for ever the first time to beat him. Also to this day we still say ITS ITS LU BUUUUUU
Amazing content ❤really hope you make this kind of content more👍like from DW2 to DW9: which Zhang Liao is the true demon at Hefei, which Guan Yu is God of War at Fan Castle, which Zhang Fei is truly a beast at Chang Ban,...
In DW4 they introduced a counter attack (hold guard, press triangle right before the enemy swing lands) this grants you an unblock able attack that will knock down all enemies including officers trying to grab you. This will chip down every in game enemy.
@Serlock4869 his reach is long, and the ai takes full advantage of that for runaway players. If you stand your ground, he gets in circle range, which guarantees a free counter hit. His basic attacks are punishable on square 4 by counter, and so is his triangle 1 grab (easier than the basic due to being slow). Weapon grinding is fun when you full counter to kill Lubu.
My friend and I did in fact pursue Lu Bu in DW 5. It was the first time we saw him and we looked at each other and thought yeah right we're kicking ass. We were playing on normal almost done with the map and he just smacked me a couple of times and I died. We were speachless and thats when officially he became my favorite character.
My first game was 4, but I've gone back as far as 3, and even to this day, the name "Lu Bu" continues to instill a certain kind of fear in me that I can't explain. Even if he's CONSIDERABLY easier in the newer games. It's been ingrained into to me for so many years and I still can't escape it. That being said, I still remember this one time when I was a kid... I had a dream about Lu Bu picking me up from school on the back of Red Hare. He jumped over the gate, approached and when I climbed up onto the horse, everyone was incredibly jealous of me. lol Lu Bu scared the shit out of me, yet made me dream about him a lot. I'm not sure what that says about me. (':
DW 4 was my first DW game and I also ended up facing Lu Bu with Xiahou Dun so it was cool seeing you using the same guy. I think maybe I waited longer to go after Lu Bu though bc I fought him within the castle grounds. It was pouring rain and only two men were left, my commander and I vs the legend. It was an extremely cinematic experience with the two of us desperately struggling to keep him in check. Im barely hanging on with a sliver of red, my musou bar recharging but with my commanders life (and the mission) on the line, I couldn't afford to run. I had to go crazy blocking, aggroing, running and interrupting with musou attacks. All while rain poured around us and smothered the bodies of all our fallen comrades. Not having some kind of cool final blow for such a monstrous battle seemed like a anticlimactic, missed opportunity for DW4 though. That one battle alone secured my cash for the next four DW games, though. Was such a great experience.
I randomly played a DW2 demo on a ps2 demo disc and was obsessed. Went out and bought the DW3 game as soon as i saved up 40$ from chores. I played so much DW3. Every character. All the time. Lu bu was a monster and the voice acting was so fun. I loved that game. Sadly none of the other DW games really come close to 3. I hated 4 and 5 was okay (mainly due to DW Empires). But I stopped playing them later on as they kept getting worse.
I never played 3 but 4 and 5 were goated for me. I will always love 4 because it such an amazing feeling to duel an officer and crush them 1 on 1. Duels were what hooked me to dw as a whole. 5 was a nice quality of life improvement and legends was fun, but samurai warriors empire was the best empire title. Amazingly fun and well crafted.
@@dragonmaster951753 I don't think 4 was a bad game my best friend had 4 and he was obsessed with it. I just preferred the maps, characters, voice acting, and bodyguard system in 3 over 4. The duels were badass. I think I just enjoyed a sillier and bit clunkier version of the game versus a serious toned one. It's been so long since I played them now, but would love a genuine new upgraded version of the games.
From a largely outsider perspective (my experience with DW/Musou largely stems from DW7 and the Hokuto Musou games), it's really interesting to see how this one moment across each game manages to feel like an absolute microcosm of their respective titles, be it for better or worse. Absolutely fun watch, 10/10, would love to see you cover equally interesting topics regarding this series.
Thanks for the feedback! 100% agree, I’m thinking of diving into other moments like this down the track, each moment would likely require a different type of challenge or spin on them as each moment is kinda unique if that makes sense?
When I was 8 years old, playing as Xiahou Dun to fight Lu Bu in DW 4 was a nightmare and especially in the DUEL. But as I got older, I found that you can counter attack on enemies so that makes it a little easier to fight Lu Bu. Same goes for DW 6.
My favourite fact about DW1 being such a different game is that it's the reason why the japanese titles always seem to be 1 number behind. While the english titles continued the numbering after DW1, the japanese titles appended 真 ("Shin" meaning "True") to the beginning, thus always being 1 number behind.
I'll never forget playing DW8 for the first time as my first DW game, taking out Diaochan because I don't read and seeing the text "Lu bu is enraged" pop up. I swiftly learnt my lesson.
On the early DW games you should try the fire arrows, makes it easy, fire arrows + charge shot = stun and on fire. get ready to shoot again right as he stops being stunned and repeat. You can easily lock him down when you get the timing right. and when you musou charged use to juggle him when he's on fire too.
I'm glad DW4 took 1st place in this video. It's not only because of all the facts you mention are true, there's also one part that made him more dangerous: The grapple attack. That game was the first to have this simple feature added in combat and Lu Bu's grapple attack was overkill. Even if you jump to avoid his grapple, his weapon could still knock you out of the air and right when you get back up he'll swing his long ass weapon in time to damage you good.
Just to win the first level in WO4, you have to pursue Lu Bu. Gameplay wise at least. After the gameplay, Lu Bu uses cutscene power to the max to make your party tactically retreat.
I think that more vids like these would be very very welcome: analyzing the way the same events are shown in different Warriors games. This sounds intriguing!
He was good, but Sun Jian was better, I don't know why but he hit like a freight train in DW4 and 5, of all the characters I attempted, Sun Jian was the easiest, I also succeeded with Cao Cao, Guan Yu, Zhou Yun(he had an easier time than Guan Yu for whatever reason), Zhuge Liang(spammed long ranged attacks and stayed the heck away) and Xiahou Dun.
Absolutely DW4 is the most difficult entry to defeat LuBu! They introduced grabs in 4 and LuBu's was an instant death. He'd impale you and the slash you until you died. Zheng Fe could do this as well. That little bridge never felt so small. Thank you for this walk down memory lane. The nostalgia of these games and their humble beginnings remimds me of how much games these days don't challenge their players unless they want to. So many peons not worth your time, whereas early entries a lowly peon or archer could be your end. So thank you for this!
It's so nice to hear someone else talk about how you used to actually fight alongside your army. I miss 100vs100. It beats 1vs1000 any day. I started with DW4 back in the day and since then I've played hundreds of hours of D3-D5. PS2 era for life.
They said that, he beat me, then I took it personally. It is always my mission to beat him. Even in 4 Empires where you can duel him 1v1 on the hardest difficulty. Did it fair and square, meaning I didn’t look out the arena with my bow to let my musou charge up then attack him with a musou attack. I actually fought him with Liu Bei’s weapon. I did it since my friends told me I couldn’t. I believe I have it record on a VHS somewhere.
I feel so validated by this list! I spent so many retries in my childhood playing this map and fighting Lu Fengxian on DW 4, I learned really fast to never accept Lu Bu's challenge.
As someone who's played a ton of Dynasty Warriors 3, Lu Bu is tough at all levels but the real most dangerous enemy is the crossbow men! DW3 had a separate bow defense stat that you couldn't level up. So in the higher difficulties you'd be fine with regular enemies and officers, but take near life ending damage from a group of bowmen and probably get stunned too.
My first game introducing me to the series was dw4. Got to the part where I am told not to pursue Lu Bu. Like any logical gamer, I pursued Lu Bu. Promptly followed by “Lu Bu please stop pursuing me”. Needless to say I was sweating bullets every time I looked back. Great times, great memorable times.
As soon as you asked which Lu Bu was the toughest, my brain instantly spat out Dynasty Warriors 4. Like damn I didn't know that traumatic event was still etched into me. But then you can play as him and dish out that trauma onto the enemy. Brilliant game.
Back in 2003, I was 12, played DW4 on PS2.. I cried when Lu Bu chased me 😂😂😂😂, .. resident evil 3 nemesis gives me nightmare when I sleep... Ahhh the good ol' PS2 era...
When I was a kid playing with my friend, Lu bu is our bane of existence. When there is a duel option that comes up, we try to push each other's controller to challenge him but now as an adult playing these games, chasing after lu bu is fun.
I remember playing Dynasty Warriors 4 with my 2 cousins and getting a "4th" weapon for the first time ever (We were playing since Dynasty 2) on Guan Yu. We immediately loaded up Hu Lao Gate and I squared up against Lu Bu in one of the most epic fights I ever had. I was almost on paar with him, becauase my attacks finally made him flinch. I say almost, because I had to heal once, but that was sooo epic nevertheless. I never cared much about character progression, but that was sooo rewarding, also due to how iconic Lu Bu was, when testing it.
I played 3 first as a teen, but 4 is the one that’s close to my heart. 4 also has Lu Bu’s best theme imo, that intro is just plain menacing and does a great job of building up this fight.

Yeah after a couple mins Yuan Shao just ends up saying to go around Lu Bu to pursue Dong Zhuo
IIRC the actual quote is, "Forget about Lu Bu! Focus on Dong Zhuo!" Or something similar.
@@HolyDogeyup that’s true I remember this. He says something similar to this
Dude "Cow Pee" was always my favourite in these games when I was a kid. 0:27 Always good to see some authentic pronunciation lol.
Cow Cow made Cow Pee.
As a Kid, I thought this was beautiful 😂
fun fact C in mandarin ,on this case, sounds as 'Ts". So its Tsao Tsao and Tsao Pi
@@RYROSmetaldefender yup. That's what makes it even funnier. Not just be cause it sounds like something else but also because they butchered the localization 😀
I used to call him cow pee too LOL
I miss the old DW's , the PS 2 golden age, where it felt like you where just a part of the army, and had to work together with your force to secure victory instead of the solo victory lap it later became. In DW 2, the army can even route the entire map of the first Yellow Turban stage all by itself when you do nothing, though they are unable to land the killing blow on the boss.
Good times, my man. I remember watching early DW2 clips in Funcoland back in the day and thinking, "Im getting a PS2 for this."
All downhill after the ps2 games (for me personally anyway). 3, 4 & 5 were just insanely good for their time.
Couldn’t agree more, 2&3 were the best for me. They started getting awful after like 5. I’ll never forget the time all the other generals actually killed Lu bu at hu lao gate without my help, like 10 major characters were all fighting him at once in DW3
"Is there anyone that can provide me with a decent challenge " That was the hardest Lu Bu fight ever when you use to utter those words.
Dw4 lu bu: who else seeks death!
Why do you even try?
We started at Dynasty Warriors 3, back in the day me and my friends called the red life meter to musou, run away and repeat strategy - "Run like a B1tcht". We always had a blast.
My first encounter with Lu Bu was basically this;
None of the characters names stood out to me yet because I was new to the franchise and everyone's name mostly blended together to my eyes/ears so I mostly ignored what officers screamed because I didn't know who was talking to whom.
Fond memories of co-op with my little brother trying to beat Lu Bu in DW4. DW4 is GOATED! Still my favorite after all these years
Biggest Roster, Most Levels, and create a character/Create Body Guards
Man, seeing Zhang Liao with the guan dao hit me with the nostalgia bat so hard.
Defeating Lu Bu is always a heck of an achievement in the old Dynasty Warriors games.
@@salamanderred8148why do you keep using an umlaut
it's Lu Bu, not Lü Bu
Dynasty Warriors 4 had me stressing when I was a kid. I remember spamming triangle as soon as i unlocked him 🤣
Right??? I miss those grapple moves. Of course lu bu had the best one
Love that grapple move, and another mechanic like duel and counter.
You want to break my guards eat my counter, enemy want to guard eat my guard break move or grapple.
Then there is lu bu: oh you attack or counter me let me remind you on how weak your attacks are
@@denamikaChannel yes! I remember those. when you and another officer would attack at the same time you'd have a weapons clash fastest finger wins
Dw4 story mode is so good. the duel feature was a great strategy on hardest mode
DW6 downfall was all the weapon changes. Some Characters had iconic weapons and they changed them. Like Lu Bu as the biggest example

Wo Long definitely had an incredible Lu Bu encounter
I’d love to dive into Wo Long eventually at some point for this channel, the character designs are unreal
@@KoeiKollection Yea they managed to keep some consistency while enhancing them. Well done
I was looking for this comment because Wo Long Lu Bu gave me as much trouble as he did in Dynasty Warriors. Only game I had no problem with LuBu was the Warriors Orochi series
"Can anybody provide me with a decent challenge !."
Thanks for the nice work, Lu Bu is truly a force you should not trifle with !!
DW4, if you're on very hard, he doesn't flinch att all!
I must say as an old dynasty warriors fan, this is the video I didn’t know I wanted till now
I started with 4 not knowing what i was doing besides just run around and hit stuff. I was like 4 or 5. When i first fought lu bu and saw how much in 1 hit my health drained i got scared and screamed a little. My dad looked over and said "Lu Bu?" And i said yes. He just laughed and said Good luck.
You had a good dad at least
What a wonderful father you have. It sounds like your father is also a video game player himself and would pay attention to it.
Bro. Your dad is awesome.
DW2: hit him three times so he's not knocked down
DW6: whack him from a horse
DW7: in Wu/Shu's version, he stands in front of the gate and flees if his health gets low. In Wei's version, he appears after the gate is broken down and lunges after Yuan Shao. So, he essentially flees from the two Hua Xiong killers and not Xiahou Yuan.
Interesting! I wanna jump back into DW7 and properly check out each story’s version of the battle
And no, there isn't a line saying "DO NOT Pursue Lu Bu."
Edit: It's also plausible that if your REALLY bad, like I was as a kid, Lu Bu just plows through all your forces on the Wu Side before you can even reach the end and cause you to lose lol Damn being a kid and bad at games is hilarious.
Koei could actually make smart AI like in their recent games (Nioh & Wo Long). They just chose to make it dumb in Warriors games for unknown reasons.
@@irfanhandonobecause that’s what makes warrior games fun? There games where they try to actively make it this crazy mechanic heavy, super difficult game it doesn’t work well. Love how you glitched out of map but Lu Bu still beat you xD
Lu Bu was a menace on Dynasty Warrior 6 Chaos Mode
Hell yah dude. Considering all the other chaos going on. Your whole allies leaving you. When you get juggled its over😂
Please make more videos like this. Comparing all the games like this is so fun to watch.
It's how I remember dealing with him, took forever though
i want to say that’s the one i remember having just an epic duel with him, or it was the Empires version
And then the health recovery when knocked down
He got me with his 4th charge attack once and sent me flying...

I remember that one in a much vaguer sense.

oooooh some dynasty warriors appreciation video essays?! i need more!
In DW4 they introduced a counter attack (hold guard, press triangle right before the enemy swing lands) this grants you an unblock able attack that will knock down all enemies including officers trying to grab you. This will chip down every in game enemy.
But Lu Bu's attacks has short windup that will make countering him very hard
And his reach is insane that your counter may not reach him
@Serlock4869 his reach is long, and the ai takes full advantage of that for runaway players. If you stand your ground, he gets in circle range, which guarantees a free counter hit. His basic attacks are punishable on square 4 by counter, and so is his triangle 1 grab (easier than the basic due to being slow).
Weapon grinding is fun when you full counter to kill Lubu.
For once the algorithm, finally found the one game series i can't leave unclicked.
He jumped over the gate, approached and when I climbed up onto the horse, everyone was incredibly jealous of me. lol
Lu Bu scared the shit out of me, yet made me dream about him a lot. I'm not sure what that says about me. (':
I love low level soldier aggression, it makes the game more interesting and harder instead of just rushing to boss kill him, then rush to another one
Cao Cao says "Do not pursue Lu Bu" word for word in DW8, but in the "Escape from Luoyang" stage.
Dynasty Warriors 4 has Yuan Shao saying something along the lines of: “Forget about Lu Bu! Go after Dong Zhuo!” or something like that….
I came here to like this for the title alone
When I was 8 years old, playing as Xiahou Dun to fight Lu Bu in DW 4 was a nightmare and especially in the DUEL. But as I got older, I found that you can counter attack on enemies so that makes it a little easier to fight Lu Bu. Same goes for DW 6.
Dude I love your voice, it's like a chill Shadow the hedgehog playing Dynasty Warriors lol. Subbed, keep it up mate.
I didn't know Shadow was chill like that.
I love how you’re narrating this like a movie narrator 😂
To unlock Lu Bu on WO1, you must pursue Lu Bu 😂
Just to win the first level in WO4, you have to pursue Lu Bu. Gameplay wise at least. After the gameplay, Lu Bu uses cutscene power to the max to make your party tactically retreat.
"To be Lu Bu, you must fight Lu Bu."

Thanks for the kind words my friend! 💪🏼
I think that more vids like these would be very very welcome: analyzing the way the same events are shown in different Warriors games. This sounds intriguing!
Xiahou Dun was the only character i could beat Lu Bu with in Dynasty warriors 4.
Oh wow, the last dynasty warrior game I played was DW4 with my ex gf, such good times!
It's so nice to hear someone else talk about how you used to actually fight alongside your army. I miss 100vs100. It beats 1vs1000 any day. I started with DW4 back in the day and since then I've played hundreds of hours of D3-D5. PS2 era for life.
Dong Zhuo pursue Lu Bu and you know what happen to him ☠️
They said that, he beat me, then I took it personally.
You do well
I feel so validated by this list!
I spent so many retries in my childhood playing this map and fighting Lu Fengxian on DW 4,
I learned really fast to never accept Lu Bu's challenge.
DW 4 Lubu was on super roids
I was so scary when lubu appear in a mission when I was about 9 years
As someone who's played a ton of Dynasty Warriors 3, Lu Bu is tough at all levels but the real most dangerous enemy is the crossbow men! DW3 had a separate bow defense stat that you couldn't level up. So in the higher difficulties you'd be fine with regular enemies and officers, but take near life ending damage from a group of bowmen and probably get stunned too.
I'm a fluent Chinese speaker and I shat myself upon the "cow pee"
DW3 Lu Bu Absolute demon, first time I ever Smashed a controller.
Meanwhile, I got into the series at 8 and locked him into a repeat combo with hookblades until I won lol
Back in 2003, I was 12, played DW4 on PS2.. I cried when Lu Bu chased me 😂😂😂😂, .. resident evil 3 nemesis gives me nightmare when I sleep... Ahhh the good ol' PS2 era...
i love that your commentary sonds super dramatic all the time :D kept watching all the way, great job!
When I was a kid playing with my friend, Lu bu is our bane of existence. When there is a duel option that comes up, we try to push each other's controller to challenge him but now as an adult playing these games, chasing after lu bu is fun.
Ah so much nostalgia. You captured that feeling perfectly!
Pursued with starting char, juggled him like jiggle physics til he got beat.
#4 is still my favorite in the series. When that came out is when my brother and I fell in love with the series.
