Mitsuhide being on Ieyasu's side and participatong in Sekigahara in SW3 is a reference to rumors that Mitsuhide actually faked his death at Yamazaki, survived, and becoming a Monk named Nakobo Tenkai. Usually he did work for Ieyasu as a Monk after that. Nioh also did the same thing, but the funny thing is, Sengoku Basara 3/Samurai Heroes also does the Tenkai thing, but i admit that the way Capcom does the Tenkai thing is... Pretty interesting. Hisahide stole his identity which cause him to become Tenkai, he ended up being a part of Kobayakawa Hideaki's faction, and he plotted to use Oichi's blood to revive Nobunaga so he can kill him all over again.
Motochika and Mitsuhide are good friends because he was orderd by Nobunaga to do diplomatic work with the Chōsokabe. After a lot of work by Mitsuhide their was alliance. But a couple of years later Nobunaga desides to cut the alliance and he made plans to invade Shikoku. But Mitsuhide stopped him first
Full disclosure: of this series, I have only played SW3. In SW3, the greater context of Mitsuhide's story does at least shadow some of the things you liked about the others. In the first mission, you have the "Transience" intro and a "blink and you'll miss it" line: "You must surpass me one day, Mitsuhide." As far as Nobunaga is concerned, Mitsuhide is his Sith Apprentice and eventual betrayal is inevitable. But Nobunaga can't just hand it to him, hence his attempt to escape in Mitsuhide's version of Honnoji but NOT Motochika's. I would also argue Mitsuhide's last hesitation was merely being concerned about his men, not actual concern about his main objective. His resolve did not waver the rest of the mission, and the regret did not come until Honnoji led to Yamazaki. In that context, I for one thought Hideyoshi's accusation landed: "You made the choice to take Nobunaga's life, and you thought you could handle it!" It is here that the diversion of the timeline occurs. If Mitsuhide decides he went too far after losing Motochika, he also discovers that he needs a redemption arc more than he needs to rule the land. That's why him teaming up with Ieyasu was enough to make his story my second favorite in the game. If Motochika survives, then in the middle of the gauntlet to defeat Ieyasu, the rock star finally lets one thing slip- it is the very fact that Mitsuhide is still conflicted about the violence that leads Motochika to declare him worthy to rule. Mitsuhide winds up with a similar philosophy on both paths, and in both paths he could safely say, "I no longer hear the screams of my people." In that light, I'd say he successfully did what he set out to do. But I can see that the very fact I prefer Motochika's version of Honnoji itself to Mitsuhide's has to be seen as a sort of failure, as does me preferring the timeline where Mitsuhide does NOT end up ruling.
While Samurai Warriors 5 didn’t do a lot right (clone movesets and sidelining important characters) I’m glad people are praising it for storytelling. I genuinely think 5 has some of the best story writing because of its focus, and Honnoji was the fruit of that labor
i maybe not know much about the details like other commenter said, Ranmaru is missing, it kinda bothers me too when i played it...but my worst moment in the game is when Ieyasu's son betrayal...i mean they dont bother making the adult model for Ieyasu, so he is a child physically fighting with his much older betrayer son. It really bothers me haha.
Cool video! I remember doing research on the Honnoji Incident back in university when I was trying to write a poem about it. I find it interesting that, historically, it's unclear why Mitsuhide decided to betray Nobunaga at all, though there are a number of theories, as stated in this video. For my poem, I decided to pull from all of them and write it as if Mitsuhide had multiple reasons and not just one. I even submitted the poem into my university's literary magazine and it got published.
Out of curiousity, would you be willing to do another video like this, but comparing Yukimura's final stand in Osaka between each SW game the event is present in?
Well I mean, some historians believe that Nobunaga told Mitsuhide to do it when he felt like what Nobunaga was doin was unjust; and that’s basically what’s happened, Mitsuhide didn’t like how Nobunaga was ruling majority of Japan
That does make some sense, as while the things that Nobunaga did weren't good, it really wasn't anything that any of the other daimyou wouldn't have done, and Hideyoshi and Ieyasu even were worse tyrants; especially Ieyasu after he defeated Mitsunari's army at Sekigahara. Hideyoshi invaded Korea apparently because why the heck not, and killed women and children, and after Ieyasu united Japan, he literally forced all of the other daimyou to go clear from their territories to Edo and all the way back for their meetings, keeping them in a constant spending loop and keeping them from being able to amass any power at home. And fitting with Yoshiki's Kingdom in Persona 5 Tactica bearing a parodied version of the Tokugawa family crest and being all about surveillance and control in the name of "love," this act of making them all go clear to Edo from even the very edges of Japan very much would have set them up for extreme and overbearing surveillance. I think really the only reason why Nobunaga is made to look as cruel as he is is simply because he basically replied to Shingen Takeda with a "Screw you" that everyone took literally.

Nobunaga’s version of the event is usually better, in the titles where he has one at least. I find the story told from his perspective to hit more, as opposed to Mitsuhide’s indecision. SW2’s version of the incident is one of my favorites from Nobunaga’s perspective because his version of the ending cutscene is different. It completely re-contextualizes Mitsuhide’s loss of resolve at the end, without it feeling too contrived. And since it’s at the end of Nobunaga’s main story, the piece of emotion he shows gets to sit as a send off for our time with his character (not counting the dream stage). SW3 from Nobunaga’s side is probably objectively the best just off the strength of the writing in his ending cutscene. One of my favorite speeches in the series for sure. I agree with you in that SW5’s version is beautiful. Ignoring the other gripes with the title itself, it’s done so well. The build up and pay off just… hit. I wish I enjoyed the game more so that going back to play that version didn’t feel like a chore.
one of my favorite honnoji stage is from SW chronicles 3 (the historical version) because i was disappointed we don’t get the oda army version of honnoji stage in SW4 & i was so glad in SW chronicles we play as the oda forces. you play as your protag, nobunaga, nouhime & ranmaru, then all of them except your protag will die one by one, which is kinda sad. also there was a dialogue where ranmaru met gracia. it was heartbreaking, with ranmaru screamed & gracia’s voice like she was almost crying, man those kids really didn’t want to kill each other 😢

On the point of Cao Cao's and Oda Nobunaga's voice actor, you're right; Douglas Rye did Cao Cao's voice from Dynasty Warriors 5 to 8 and Warriors Orochi 1 and 2, and also did the initial English voice work for Oda Nobunaga in Samurai Warriors 1, before he got replaced by Brent Schaus for Samurai Warriors 2 and then Christopher Corey Smith for SW 3 and Katana and the Warriors Orochi games. Samurai Warriors 2's writing having seeming romantic undertones between the two does sort of make sense, though, as Nobunaga was actually bisexual. I'm not sure if there's any evidence that Mitsuhide himself was, though.
Hmmm, in some way, you can kinda see the portrayal they were going for with SW2 is maybe like a honeymoon phase of being with a person for so long, agreeing with their ways despite being abusive and wrong, and having trouble getting over them being out of your life since you let them occupy such a big spot in your life when you shouldn't have. It's a bad relationship in which Mitsuhide was effectively used and the scars were left behind. Course, you aren't wrong in the fanfic-y kinda mention either because the way I even became aware of the the the dynamic between Mitshide, Nobunaga, and Ranmaru was due to a fanfiction i randomly came across as a teenager. I had no idea it was Samurai Warriors 1 and 2 related until later when I revisted the classic musou franchise. I highly recommend scoping out a copy of Samurai Warriors 3 Z on ps3. it runs much better and it's partly due to the janky frame rate of the wii version that seems to make it so messy in its gameplay feel and speed. it's really odd (but someone showed an interesting comparison of those two and other games side by side with neither seeming faster or slower oddly.)
SW5 has the best Honnoji imo, and the best music and map design for the stage as well. It felt a lot more climactic for both the Oda and Akechi sides compared to previous games' interpretations. P.S. I also really liked how they handled Okehazama in SW5.
I might be biased, but as a whole, I love Sw1 characters in general. I think they are more nuanced in general, than the others, I love how Mitsuhide is so conflicted and the two possible endings for every character is so nice
It's pretty wild that the ranking of Honnoji portrayal is very different depending on whose POV we're seeing. From Nobunaga's POV version of the stage, I would rank SW3's as the best, but from Mitsuhide's POV, it's the worst. SW2 is the reverse, with Mitsuhide's being very good, while Nobunaga's... not so much. SW4 has my least favorite portrayal of Nobunaga so even if he did have a version of Honnoji, I don't think it would have been that great.
This is one of my fav videos of yours @KoeiKollection ! The Incident at Honnoji has been one of my favourite events/storyline’s in all of those games since I can remember! And I love seeing all of them analysed in one video! This is zekestarvaggi’s UA-cam channel account by the way 😊

@killztreakyt yeah I’m interested in covering the Osaka Campaign for sure I’m thinking of diving into versing Tadakatsu at Mikatigahara next, but I’ve got a steadily growing list of moments I’d like to revisit from both DW & SW Also, thanks for the sub!

@Koei Kollection I understand, your views and opinions. Mine to me Samurai Warriors 5 is best, it has the best depiction of Nobunaga being that it is a Reboot of sorts and also best incarnation of Noh aka Kicho, i would like to play SW4 the closest i have is Warriors Orochi 4. and yes from DW5 to DW8 Douglas Rye who voiced Cao Cao voiced Nobunaga in first SW game back in 2004, marking Rye's first time voicing a character in a Warriors game and then he would go on to voice Cao Cao until he was replaced for DW9
I'd like to see your depictions on Nagashino from the 5 SW games, I'd also like a comparrison of Yukimura (Nobushige) Sanada from not only SW1 - SW5 but Also Spirit of Sanada.
Good video like always but I also liked how Nobunaga did not Give AF in Samurai warriors 2, also your not the only person who think that Mitsuhide and Nobunaga relationship was a lil SUS 😭😭😭🤣 i always did
I amazed you rated SW5 in terms of characters, cause, motivations, and the conclusion. Looking at SW3, indeed, the Honnoji event was poorly done. While Warring State Era historians made attempts to unearth why the real Mitsuhide started the rebellion against his lord at Honnoji, only possibilities but none of them could be proven true. We only have the timeline of the events but the motivations and reasons still remain unknown. We would never know the true of what Mitsuhide's mind was going through. Besides that, thank you for the video and the rankings.
11:50 Well, it wasn't uncommon for a Lord to be in love with a retainer of the same sex back then, but I have noticed the "fanfic" feel on most male friendships/bonds in the SW series(Which, as a fangirl of that fanfic stuff back in the day, was what enticed me to keep playing the series LOL).
Honestly, If Mitsuhide showed half resolve at the midpoint of Honnoji in five, for him to be fully ready at the final battle, it would still work due to how fleshed out it was and all those lost on the road to the world they desired.
the only thing I hate about SW5 is that they skipped over Ranmaru, I really like that character, hopefully they bring him back if we ever get SW6 but then again if SW6 is like SW5, 90% of the SW5 roster won't return
@@lubudracula5072 yeah, as I said if the next game is going to be like the last one then there will be only 3-4 characters in SW6 from SW5 but maybe if they didn't do that one era at the time story we could get Ranmaru I just didn't like how he got replaced by Mitsuki and Yasuke, Mitsuki was annoying and Yasuke just showed up in the last 2 missions out of nowhere
you should watch the movie kubi you will understand why japan make nobunaga and mitsuhide have spark of teenage love in here because of the historical theory they have about their relationship. The movie itself pretty fun
That's one of a theory, but no concrete history records said that's true, it's one of folklore theory according to japanese historians, while in the same time, the most plausible theory
would it be possible to do some kind of comparison between the different samurai warrior 4 titles? i want to get one but i am not sure which one to go for. 4, or 4-II or Sanada. I'd be interested in having a detailed video. The only title of 4 I played is empires.
@Koei Kollection you should do one about Fan Castle, One on Nagashino, One on others to see how differently they played out. Also mostly cause I only know of them via dw7 and what not
Are we getting the sweet Samurai Warriors 3 character tier list, my lord? A stage tier list for the games would also be cool as well. If you don't, I will Honnoji you
Just once I want to see a game where Mitsuhide uses a spear considering he was known historically for being a skilled spearman and a notably mediocre swordsman.
in my case i prefer the sw3 nobunaga version, i mean is perfect in all aspect also that cutscene really hits you emotionally. but yeah sw3 will be my peak in the games or at least until i manage to get a better laptop to play sw4 and sw5
still hope that koei does the same thing they did in sw 5 but in the dw universe where the game focuses on cao cao, but i guess with origins now on the horizon thats not likely to happen

Mitsuhide did nothing wrong! ...It's almost 2 AM here as I am writing this comment... I think I need to sleep before saying something even more dumb than I already did D:
For Character I agree wit 5 since it had a lot of meat on its bones but also sadly reduced it for many others which i find devisive to say the least. Ngl that twilight bit in SW2 is hilarious no other way to say it xD
I always like the older ones. Especially 2 (probably because Mitsuhide is actually convinced to do it and not like a third character just making him move). In my honest opinion: sw5 doesn't exist
I love in SW1 there is a line where Nobunaga says "I love you" to Mitsuhide. It was a better version in my opinion because historically, Nobunaga was a bisexual/homosexual. Ranmaru was his lover. Gotta love a gay conqueror who helped shape Japan into what it is today.. although he was a terrible person haha
@@Achance2c Not true at all. Just finished my third book on Japanese history (Sengoku Jidai by Chaplin, A History of Japan 1334-1616 by Sansom, War in Japan by Turnbull) and nowhere was it mentioned that he was gay or interested in men. Stop lying, it's cringe and weird.
@@bigboydancannon4325 okay sir. I’ve read books that don’t mention everything as well. Do some more research, it is highly believed to be true that he had a homosexual relationship with Ranmaru. Homosexuality has always been around and it hasn’t always been looked down upon. As for the game, Mitsuhide goes in to kiss Ranmaru in one of the first story CS. Nobunaga says “I love you” to Mitsuhide when you kill him after triggering certain events, and I believe Noh has some dialogue with Ranmaru about what will he do if she kills Nobunaga. I’ll end the conversation by quoting this: “I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing” - Socrates Happy learning!

"Men, our enemies lie in Honnoji Temple. ATTACK!!!"
Great video idea!
This is zekestarvaggi’s UA-cam channel account by the way 😊
Thanks for the kind works my friend! Videos like these are probably some of my fave to make😁 glad you enjoyed it
@@KoeiKollection I really did, and I’d like to see more! Maybe if you feel like it, a Osaka Campaign compilation? Like Yukimura’s Warriors Death? That’d be awesome! I subbed on this account btw
@killztreakyt yeah I’m interested in covering the Osaka Campaign for sure
I’m thinking of diving into versing Tadakatsu at Mikatigahara next, but I’ve got a steadily growing list of moments I’d like to revisit from both DW & SW
Also, thanks for the sub!
@@KoeiKollection All g man you deserve it! I look forward to your content every day!
Since were doing this i would recommend a co.paeison betqeen mikatagahara, odawara or Osaka Castle battles between games. Maybe even include sw chronicles in the tierlist too. Especially how sw 3 treats Osaka Castle. Ignore that osaka doesnt happen in sw 5.
Thanks! I’ll add your suggestions to the list😊
@@KoeiKollection cool
1582 AD is such a terrible year to be the Demon King of Feudal Japan 🗾.
Good video like always but I also liked how Nobunaga did not Give AF in Samurai warriors 2, also your not the only person who think that Mitsuhide and Nobunaga relationship was a lil SUS 😭😭😭🤣 i always did
Historically, Nobunaga x Ranmaru was the actual sus relationship. Too bad KT haven't invested in that.
I'm dying with your comments about SW2, man. It's so true. 😂
"Some of you are pretty cool.
Don't come to Honnoji tomorrow..."
Omg hahaha
SW6 will be about Toyotomi era. So I don't think Ranmaru will be there
@@lubudracula5072 yeah, as I said if the next game is going to be like the last one then there will be only 3-4 characters in SW6 from SW5
but maybe if they didn't do that one era at the time story we could get Ranmaru
I just didn't like how he got replaced by Mitsuki and Yasuke, Mitsuki was annoying and Yasuke just showed up in the last 2 missions out of nowhere
you should watch the movie kubi you will understand why japan make nobunaga and mitsuhide have spark of teenage love in here because of the historical theory they have about their relationship. The movie itself pretty fun
Yes, the longtime VA for Cao Cao DID voice Nobunaga in SW1 and SW2.
In fact, Huang Zhong makes a joke reference about the similarities between the two in Warriors Orochi 1.
Nobunaga also caused the death of Mistuhide’s mother.
That's one of a theory, but no concrete history records said that's true, it's one of folklore theory according to japanese historians, while in the same time, the most plausible theory
Sw2 is still the best game ever
Do you agree with me ?
Not only in honnji but also in everything
you are right
would it be possible to do some kind of comparison between the different samurai warrior 4 titles? i want to get one but i am not sure which one to go for. 4, or 4-II or Sanada. I'd be interested in having a detailed video. The only title of 4 I played is empires.
I plan on getting into game reviews on this channel at some stage, but I’ve always wanted to make a SW4 vs SW4ii vid
This is Dwight and Sora: nahh we saved Nobunaga, he is still ruling Japan
Sandayu Momochi appearing too and his special intro cinematic at Honoji is a great thing too. A conflict within a conflict.
Can you do a explanation of kotaro fuma and his introduction in sw2
I’ll add it to the list😊
@@KoeiKollection thanks
Ah yes Honnoji, my favorite place to make barbecue.
@Koei Kollection you should do one about Fan Castle, One on Nagashino, One on others to see how differently they played out.
Also mostly cause I only know of them via dw7 and what not
That’s a great idea, thanks!
Love it
i believe you forgot the what if for samurai warriors 5 but i could be mistaken
Are we getting the sweet Samurai Warriors 3 character tier list, my lord? A stage tier list for the games would also be cool as well. If you don't, I will Honnoji you
A SW3 tier list is definitely something I’m working towards, just got a few other vids in the pipeline currently!
Just once I want to see a game where Mitsuhide uses a spear considering he was known historically for being a skilled spearman and a notably mediocre swordsman.
I hope you find this comment but I was genuinely curious as to which version of Samurai Warriors 2 you were running and on what device it is.
I’m just playing the Xbox 360 version of SW2 - I do have the XL expansion installed, but that doesn’t make any graphical difference
@@KoeiKollection It looks ridiculously polished compared to the PS2 version. It got me curious. Thanks mate!
in my case i prefer the sw3 nobunaga version, i mean is perfect in all aspect also that cutscene really hits you emotionally. but yeah sw3 will be my peak in the games or at least until i manage to get a better laptop to play sw4 and sw5
still hope that koei does the same thing they did in sw 5 but in the dw universe where the game focuses on cao cao, but i guess with origins now on the horizon thats not likely to happen
8:49
Ouch that's a painful roast!
Was Yasuke the black retainer of Nobunaga at Honnoji when he died and hid his head from Akechi ?
Personally, I enjoy playing Samurai Warriors 5 More than 2, 3 and 4. Idk why, I just enjoying it more (Probably because I play to much Sengoku Basara 😂)
I still don’t know why you can pick Motonari to be there in 4-2 (it seems out of nowhere to me)
But what about the Honnoji incident in Pokemon Conquest?
we need Sekigahara
We all know that the best version is the one from Samurai Warriors 4-II where **gasp** we find out that it was actually Hisahide Matsunaga pretending to be Mitsuhide this whole time! :o, I am shocked, **SHOCKED** I say, Koei tricked us this whole time! Mitsuhide did nothing wrong!
...It's almost 2 AM here as I am writing this comment... I think I need to sleep before saying something even more dumb than I already did D:
Can you do worriers for orochi next
I’ll add it to the list!
For Character I agree wit 5 since it had a lot of meat on its bones but also sadly reduced it for many others which i find devisive to say the least. Ngl that twilight bit in SW2 is hilarious no other way to say it xD
100% agree! Also yea… not proud of that comparison, but it’s the only thing that came to mind😅
@@KoeiKollection it sadly was nail on the head xD so fits
Well, you're probably not wrong about Honnoji is the place where Nobunaga ended his life.... You failed???
There is no way you said sw5 is slower than 4…
I always like the older ones. Especially 2 (probably because Mitsuhide is actually convinced to do it and not like a third character just making him move).
In my honest opinion: sw5 doesn't exist
Nobunaga is so hot
SW2 >>>>>>
Nobunaga Oda is my favourite character in samurai warriors

07:55 Please.. Please tell me you intentionally mispronounced Cao-Cao's name as a joke, you kind Sir.
エッチスケッチあけち
I love in SW1 there is a line where Nobunaga says "I love you" to Mitsuhide. It was a better version in my opinion because historically, Nobunaga was a bisexual/homosexual. Ranmaru was his lover. Gotta love a gay conqueror who helped shape Japan into what it is today.. although he was a terrible person haha
Yeah, that's complete bullshit but keep telling yourself that
@@bigboydancannon4325 about which part? Cuz they’re both true 🤷 open a history book my friend. It’s very well known Nobunaga was gay/bi
@@Achance2c
Not true at all.
I’ll end the conversation by quoting this:
“I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing” - Socrates
Happy learning!
@@Achance2c
Oh, so you got nothing, got it. At least know we know your ass is a good historical source, I'm sure you wish Nobunaga had used it.
