    Good job prepping the block. Those cleaning products did a good job!

      Thanks! Yes they did, and with the added benefit of not being fumy.

    So satisfying to see the piston heads cleaned up! Great job man 👏

    A lil bit of mapp gas used to heat the dowel pins on the heads mating surface of the engine. With a pair of needle nose visegrips and some heat from the mapp gas and those dowel pins will come right out.

    Those pistons look impressively shiny.
    (P.S. nice music selection again!)

      Its not really that bad. I tore the entire engine down to the short block in just under 2 hours.

    After thinking and suffering a lot, I removed the dowels easily making threads in them, a 12mm grub screw, lots of washers, a nut to fit the screw and shazam.

    Cleaning oh what fun. This comment will prove why I oddly LOVED this video. Most people think my normal engine compartment cleaning on my projects is way crazy. However, when I have decided it's time for the next one when I open the hood for the "interested party" I always just open and wait for the comments. My motto is... If I can touch it, I can clean it, I can protect it. The thing I am the most OCD/take the most time/pride doing is ANY factory painted area gets cleaned, polished and wax/treated. 90's Jeeps and 99-01 Miatas have in my experience fantastic engine compartment paint. A question.... is there a mod/is it possible to route that RT side exhaust underneath?

      A clean engine bay speaks volumes on how the car has been treated. Definitely a selling point!
      There are aftermarket headers available that have the right side drop down and meet with the left side under the vehicle. A much better design to be sure. The redesigned Toyota head gaskets supposedly are up to the task of the original crossover pipe design though.

    My 4 runner is turning out to be a huge mistake but I find myself with a little time to put in work. I think I need to change the head gaskets and possibly others because there seems to be a lot of oil coming down where the engine joins the transmission.

    Doing this exact nasty head gasket job right now, outside, no cover, cold November 15. Your is so much cleaner than mine, seems a nasty oil leak coated the entire front end. I intend to use varsol on some of it and Castrol Super Clean on the rest, the stuff is wicked on the skin but works really well. I got two gallons of it as it has many uses. Enjoying your playlist for references. Thanks for the videos!

      I felt the grime was so thick I got some oven cleaner for the extra heavy duty penetration. New stuff for Grills and BBQs, $4.75/can, pension doesn't go far enough lol, it works well enough but I'll save the Super Clean for final cleaning. I should've taken pics, pre/post but kinda difficult to post here. Worst mess I've ever cleaned and, a special thanks for the methods employed cleaning the block, everything else run through the two parts washers with Varsol, didn't know what to do with that mangy block lol.

    I have to find a way to slow down your video. This is the only video that’s shows a full tear down.

    • @terenfenn9672
      @terenfenn9672 Рік тому

      Agreed! Watching it right now for a brush-up reminder. Took so long to get it apart, so rusted and seized on exhasut parts, it took forever, half forgot stuff and now at the stage of cleaning before reassembly. Figuring out the dozens of seals is gonna be a bear lol. This videa is perfect except theres no way to slow it down in spots, so I backspace it 5 seconds at a time, helps big time.

    Would wrapping the original crossover pipe in heat reflective tape provide any additional protection? Just thinking in terms of a practical solution in terms of cost that might provide some additional protection.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure honestly. I think there will still be a lot of heat soak just because it is confined area without much airflow. The best fix for this are aftermarket headers that stay separated until they are under the vehicle.

    I’m just saying, but if you take the crossover heat trap out of the equation you might not have to touch those HG for many years, since you had the heads already off, you already had the job already half done -just saying..
