It's nice to know that professional techs get nervous turning the key after a big jobs. Makes me feel better about working on my own stuff.

When I used to work for Toyota I did alot of their engine rebuilds. No matter how many I did it was always nerve wracking turning the key for the first time.

I'm about to tackle the same job on my 2005 Tacoma. I read the Pro-Demand information where it mentions removing the engine. I couldn't imagine why the job would require this until you mentioned the oil pan. I appreciate the time you spent recording and uploading this video. Nicely done. I am a Master ASE certified automotive instructor, so I can appreciate your effort. Thanks so much for sharing.

Really impressive! I did a similar job on a much simpler engine (GM Marine 4.3 V6), it had blown the HGs and the cyl heads had cracks due to an overheat. Since it is an OHV engine did not have to deal with the timing chain etc, took much less time. Replaced heads with re-man marine heads and Fel/Pro marine gaskets. What took the longest was cleaning up the block deck surfaces and making sure the cyl head bolt holes were nice and clean.

Yes I thank you very much sir! I have a 2004 4Runner and so saying I think I’m going to have to this . I have had a small miss when cold but warm it’s ok . I recently did away with the clutch fan to two ten inch electrical in front blowing through . I also added accell coil packs an new denso tt plugs . I’ve got new water pump, thermostat, radiator (with aluminum end caps),and stainless steel headers and hardware . I kinda figured I would be doing this because it falls in to the bad years for head gaskets . It has 231,000 miles my dad bought it used around 3-4 years ago and past away 1year 3 months ago. He taught me how to work on automobiles. He said this was the first Toyota he had owened we are chevy people growing up I seen them get cheap the last 30-35 years and he as well we switched to Toyota the last 10-15 . We knew what we were up against with the year he had got but it was on the lines of let’s see what it’s made like . That being said he had saved and so had I to rear in to it seeing how it worked and what mods if any we could achieve along the way to get more power. So sadly enough I began this about six months after he was gone it’s been up hill both ways . I knew it would but that’s life and I given up with out a fight . I have had all the interior out accept the head liner all has been sound deadened shampooed seat covers off the the seats new padding new carpet 30% better than factory. All stereo in doors and dash up dated and rust on seats was removed and epoxied . Along with the frame inside and out . 4.5 inches of lift front 3 inches in the rear with black ring wheels and milestar Patagonia 33x12.50-17 inch tires . Chrome nerf bars buy buy running boards that did not have a lot of tread exposed for any use to much tucked under the rocker . Then 4 wheel brakes drilled and slotted with ceramic pads new bottom a arms, cv joints, bearings, and inner and outer tie rods! Also custom built skid pans I’m a welder so all that’s my deal, but we know what I’m doing next thanks for the video I took notice of the reverse un torquing of the heads so I learn from what I seen the rest us just time and lots of parts to clean and polish to make look good . Lots of keeping everything organized and installed in the right places correctly! Also thanks for the tip on the oil and filter I’ll just have to funnel mine in no big deal . To bad they don’t make some hi po cams it would be nice to hear a little loping going at the tail pipe that now has a tubo muffler in it . But hay I’ve put a lot of power adders on already they say there’s 10.4 to one compression ratio in there . So the lope I’ll just not have it would be nice but we can’t win them all ! I’d say he would be proud already it’s just that extra mile now I didn’t think I would have to do . I was just waiting and checking all along hoping some one has done it. Unfortunately not so thanks for your video once more lots of help from watching ! Stay safe and blessing to you and your family !

    Question.
    Replacing my timing chain
I'm now cranking the engine so I can see my chain go around and double check the function of everything.
Once in a while when my chain goes around it gets slightly loose and some points then tightens up again. Is this normal?

I thought Toyota didnt "pre-pressurize" the fuel system until the CAS detects a full cycle for a safety mechanism to stop the fuel pump in the event of a crash. There are diag tools that will bypass the C/OPN relay which is supposed to control this to test and pressurize the pump. Did you have a list of things that were replaced in the process? Nice work and video btw. Would it be more sane to swap the motor out? I'm sure there are a lot of crossover years the same block can be used.

    • @ryansmith7974

The sludge doesn't mean your headgasket is for sure leaking. Some gunk is normal its just some moisture and oil mixed and evaporated to the highest point in your engine. You dont want to do this job unless you know for sure that its a blown headgasket.

    • @juliosdiy3206

@@ryansmith7974 sure my engine is running fine i notice that my wifes 2011 highlander has the same sludge so i am convince that the thing is built that way and is normal. I think it may have something to do with timing chain or something i will look further for this milky sludge issue. My dads 2007 gen 1 highlander has no signs of headgasket failure and no milky sludge on cap hes got 230k on the engine and runs fine i do maintainence on his car also.

Not that there's a reply but my engine is cooling fine. But the coolant that goes to the overflow doesn't return to the radiator.if I leave it to completely cool the radiator still has pressure. I did a gasket test where the fluid changes color 3 x and nothing happened. I changed the thermostat, no change. Have run it without the thermostat no change. When I run it with a funnel filler on the radiator fluid goes into the funnel and returns as engine cools. when raving more fluid goes into the funnel. I'm assuming the water pump is working since the level of fluid rises when I hit the gas . I don't have a leak on the water pump. Could this be some sort of air pocket in the cooling causing this? Or a blown head gasket that I am not getting a positive on the test?

Mechanics typically know which bolt went where depending on its threads, size, bolt lengths etc. If you are new put the bolts in a zip lock bag and write the part those bolts came off with. I first started doing big jobs I took alot of pictures after every part of the process. After a part was removed I take a picture. Now I developed a general reference in my head for the bolts and where they go. Cheers

Thank you so much for doing this video. I thought "hey, I'm a handy guy, maybe I could do it?" NO WAY! Any advice on a stop leak till I save up the cash to pay someone to do it?
