  • In this week’s video, I’m going to show you how to paint a replacement fender yourself, in your garage, for cheap - using the following products:
    - Scotch scuff pads: amzn.to/387RWXP
    - Sand paper variety pack: amzn.to/2NNsPmr
    - Dura-Block sanding block: amzn.to/3sIbCth
    - blue shop towels
    - Wax & Grease Remover: amzn.to/3e36vQr
    - Duplicolor Primer Sealer: amzn.to/3uKUeGd
    - Duplicolor Perfect Match BTY1619 (1G3)
    - Duplicolor Lacquer Clear Coat: amzn.to/3qb8cgT
    - half mask: amzn.to/3e2skzu
    - Orbital buffer 10": amzn.to/303HufA
    - Meguiars light cutting compound/polish: amzn.to/3cb6XcT
Since making this video, I have found better Clear coat options:
    Spraymax 2k Gloss: amzn.to/43KbyMK
    Duplicolor 1K Gloss: amzn.to/3UKXheM
    Duplicolor 1K Matte: amzn.to/3A5i6rY
I even had a couple bloopers and show how to avoid & fix them, since mistakes happen in real life.
(This video was not sponsored by any of these manufacturers. I either had it in my garage already, or bought them at a local parts store.)

Don't let this get to your head; but, after watching two of your videos, I immediately, subscribed. I kept saying, wow, this guy is good. No unnecessary music, no waste of time; totally, great editing and to the point of where things matter; hard working, and efficient. You are full of goodness. Thank you. The only thing you did not say is how long you waited between coats. But, of course that info is usually in the spray cans.

Thank you! My goal is to create the exact videos you just described. As for time between coats, it does vary depending on the exact product. The lacquer I used in this video said to wait 10 mins between each coat.

I agree with your comment. I always hate it when you locate a "How to" video, and either you see some guy's face taken with a selfie stick or an overproduced musical logo with exploding letters or heavy metal crap "music". If I see that, I bail out immediately and give it a thumb down.

Another great video! You're hands down the Duplicolor expert! I hope they're paying you. When painting plastic fender flares do you sand down to the bare plastic or do you think it's ok to scuff up and then apply adhesion promoter and primer sealer?

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  2 роки тому

Haha thanks, I might hit them up and see if I can get some free paint! Been using their stuff for almost 20 years now. On the flares, I would only scuff up the original paint. As long as it's in good shape and there's no bare plastic showing, you won't even need the adhesion promoter. That's only needed to help paint bond to bare plastic. But do use the primer sealer over the scuffed original paint as you mentioned.

I buy and flip auction cars. The local painter I use for hoods, fenders, bumpers, etc. has raised his price to $450/panel.....with me supplying all materials. I am gonna give the aerosol can method a try on a basic red work truck. 👍

That seems expensive with you supplying the materials!

Thank you for your awesome step by step video. Quick question, do you recommend to sand the fender with a 1,000 or 2,000 grit sand paper before applying the clear coat? If the fender feels a bit rough.

Depending on the color, you may need to recoat after sanding. I would sand the color with 600 or 800 grit before re-applying the color. Then once you have a good smooth color coat, apply the clear. If you still have rough finish after clear, you can wetsand and polish as needed.
