Before primer I would just sand it with 600 max, then lay down the primer and sand the primer with 800 max. The higher you go on the grit the less adhesion there will be, especially if you use a cheap primer where the chemical adhesion is probably not as good as with an expensive one.
hey i was debating whether or not I Wet-sand the clear as high as 1500 because the rest of the cars panels would have come from factory and be slightly "orangepeely" as its not wet-sanded. How can I match a bumpers texture that I would be painting myself to factory paint?

I have a respirator, 400 and 800 grit wet or dry sandpaper, plastic sheeting to keep my garage from getting covered in paint, adhesion promoter and sandable Rustoleum filler/primer and Duplicolor spray paint and Rustoleum acrylic lacquer. Thanks again!
I'd wait at least 3 or 4 days before wet sanding clear coat... You need to let the paint harden really for a good while.. clear can still be soft for weeks after it doesn't fully harden as quick as you think
1500 grit is too fine for sealing the primer - use 1000 grit (or 1200 at the ABSOLUTE finest) or the base colour may flake/peel off!! Some people won’t go any finer than 800 for wet sanding primer 😅 If OP is reading this, did you have any problems with flake/peeling months later? Cheers 🍻
I work in a collision shop and for proper adhesion we sand are panels with 400 grit, jumping from 400 to 1500 is pointless you have to work your way through the grits to actually knock down the scratches
You used 1500 grit BEFORE priming??? did you at least read your instructions?? That primer/paint is going to come/chip off easily!! You need to use 320 before primer , block sand, then 400-600 before paint. That 1500 is for the clear coat for polishing (especially Lacquer clear like you used)

okay, if anyone watching this dont use that clear. use a clear with the hardener cap in it. you puncture the hardener on the bottom of the can. this clear that he used is going to chip and crack with the first rock on the highway.
@@juanaguilar4111 wet sanding isn't really needed but it's prefer if you want a nice mirror look. Usually when using rattle can, paint doesn't lay as perfect which leads to something called "orange peel" finish. Wet sanding gets rid of the orange peel and gives it a a nice mirror look.
Go to English colors and give them the paint code of you're car. They will put it in a spray bottle for you and also use 2k clear I just did the fender on my pick up looks really good!
You do not need to sand with 1500 after the 400. In all actuality 400 or 600 grit is perfect to paint over as long as it is all flat and any damage prepped good and primed.

So you forgot a very important item. It is not wise to straight up prime the bumper and paint the bumper by itself. The primer and paint are not flexible by themselves. Especially when temps change and the bumper bends. The paint will crack. It is critical that you use adhesive promoter that will help the paint and primer stick to flexible body parts. It will only be a matter of time when you paint starts to fall off because you did not use this. In addition you should sand the bumper with 320-400 before laying down primer. Primer has very big droplets. And the sand paper you use does not give enough teeth for the primer to grab. When painting the bumper you should use 600-800. That will give the pain enough teeth to grab and still give it a smooth finish. The paper you use does not give the paint enough teeth and will start to flake off.
