With five Grammys, I believe weird Al is the most prolific comedy songwriter ever and you like breaking down bars, watch hardware store, an original song that you’ll be surprised by
That song is awesome. I don't recall exactly what but I think they sped up that one section of the song. he mentioned something in an interview about how difficult it was to record that section. don't remember if he said they did it in one take or if they only got one good take because of difficulty or if it was done in sections to get around that but yea there's a reason he doesn't perform that song live.
@@TwoGunToast They didn't speed it up, he only did it "For real" once, and wouldn't attempt it again. it's at the same pace as "rap god"... but a *FULL* 7 seconds longer... *AND* a decade earlier.
Tim Minchin is second followed by Bo Burnham
100% Hardware store, such a great song.
Weird Al is also one of the most underappreciated. Well, maybe not that bad since Radcliffe plays him in his named feature and it's rumored to be a superb movie.
I'll never not cackle at K & P locking the doors of a convertible.
George Lucas tried to destroy every copy of that special so even boot-legged that tape is damned near priceless.
Was.... was damned near priceless. You can watch it on UA-cam now.
I mean, don't. It's awful. But you _can._
@newgrl I have watched it every year for the past 5 years... it's a good reminder that episodes 7,8, and 9 could have been much... much... worse...
@@skurt258 LOL! Indeed.
lol
I doubt he actually tried, he just said he would want to. RedLetterMedia did a bit where Rich Evans cosplaying as Lucas went to conventions, bought every copy he could find and smashed them with a hammer in front of the seller.
Not only did Chamillionare NOT get mad about the parody, he was so impressed that he shared the song on all of his social media.
In fact, at this point, Weird Al is such an icon that artists use his parodies as evidence that they've made it in the music industry. If he is aping on your music, then you truly belong.
His lyrics are so good that when he did "The Saga Begins" a parody of "American Pie," Don McLean the singer of "American Pie" sometimes finds himself singing "The Saga Begins" when he performs his own song.
YES! He needs to do “The Saga Begins” next, then “Word Crimes”!
Tremendous choices
How is The Saga Begins a parody of American Pie??? it's clearly based off of Star Wars unless I'm missing something
@@awalters2883
The tune is American Pie. All the lyrics are Sstar Wars
You know you've made it when Weird Al parodies your song 🤘
It's true. An artist considers it a milestone when Weird Al does a parody of their song. It's also an honor if their song makes it into one of his polka mash-ups.
That's what Kurt Cobain said
@@hilarymol6607 Prince and at one time Coolio didn't think so. Michael Jackson certainly saw it as an honour. I'm pretty sure he let Al do parodies of his song at least twice and he let Alien Ant Farm cover his song because he actually loved what they did with it. It's these idiots who take themselves too seriously. Prince was a great musician and songwriter. But the guy took himself way too seriously. Most of his songs were about getting off. He actually had a song called Get Off. If the majority of your songs are about getting your freak on, you can't take yourself that seriously. He wrote some incredible songs, and his raunchiest song ever, Little Red Corvette, was brilliant because it got past the censors despite being the dirtiest, nastiest song of the 80s if not all time, but a lot of them were about one singular topic. He also got more pretentious after he converted to another religion. Some of these guys take themselves too seriously. At least Madonna's famous line was "I'm here to provoke people." She wasn't taking any of her music seriously. She knew who she was.
@@christhornycroft3686 I know Coolio wasn't happy about it. And any artist who has objected simply isn't parodied. I forget what the mix-up with Coolio was.
@@christhornycroft3686 Also, Prince was definitely a musical genius. You're right, tho - the 80s and part of his 90s set was definitely mostly about sex. I'm a Gen Xer and I remember thinking "Okay, SEX. We GET it. Not even Barry White goes on this much." And then I'd get lost in the hook again.
I'm still convinced Weird Al would be the greatest all time Halftime Show. Just a pure entertainer.
If I could see Al sing Sports Song at the Superbowl, I could die happy.
Crazy they haven't gotten him yet...
His live shows are otherworldly
What a brilliant idea!
The white and nerdy guy dancing behind him is Donnie Osmond. If you do a bit of research on him you will see why he was a perfect choice to do a cameo on this video.
🎶 Hardware Store 🎶 or 🎶 Word Crimes🎶 show what Al is truly capable of. #armyofdarkness 🖤✊
I concur
Hardware Store over Word Crimes. They're both great, but Hardware Store is an original, for a parody artist to go that hard all on his own is just awesome.
@@curtisholsinger6023 Hardware Store is always my choice. But, I figured I would give an option. 🤣
Word play seconded
I perfer word crimes over hardware store, hardware store is unique, but word crimes is relevant to our society and lives.l, whereas hardware store is just fun song.
One thing i haven't seen anyone else comment on:
You noticed Seth Green, but not the guy dancing with Al.
That's one of the original white nerds, Donnie Osmond.
Artists don't just "not mind", they LOVE it when Weird Al picks one of their songs. It means you've really made it. Try his "All about the Pentiums"
Prince was just about the only person not to want to be parodied at all. So Al didn't.
@@BNuts I forgot about that! and Eminem vetoed a music video for Couch Potato.
And while Al could parody without permission, once he had the ability to talk to artists, he always has asked for permission.
Well most of them anyway. Some are too 'snooty patooty'.
@@atomicjulie7216 don't forget Coolio originally warned Weird Al not to come anywhere close to him originally, although he eventually came to appreciate the parody
Except for Prince. He wouldn't allow Al to parody any of his songs...why he gives gim a dig in Word Crimes, lol.
Fun fact: Donnie Osmond did his whole dance in one take. There's a video of just Al and Donnie doing the whole song and it's freaking hilarious.
ua-cam.com/video/Vq6OncN6_Fo/v-deo.html
tacky was filmed in one continuous shot also. not one take, but no editing
Trapped in the drive thru. Not everyone gets it right away but I couldn't breathe through the whole video
Hardware Store should be next. It's a true showcase of his lyrical ability.
The guy dancing with Al is one the most popular teen idols in the 1970's Donny Osmond
Thank you I recognized him but couldn't come up with his name
@@itsakittyting Donny & His sister Marie also had a daytime talk show in the late 90's early 2000's called Donny & Marie. It was a reboot from their 1976 variety show. The Osmonds were one of the most popular singing groups in the 70's only the Jackson Five led by young Michael Jackson had more top 10 hits.
@@bpankey1976 Yes I know, I had his name on the tip of my tongue but just couldn't et it out ☺
Thank you! Was waiting for someone to mention Donny Osmond.
I can highly recommend 'Word Crimes' by Weird Al. If you think this is good lyric wise then that one should be right up your alley. Im amazed by him managing to do an entire song entirely on-topic. Also...Foil by him is amazing.
Regards from the Netherlands ;)
Clif would love that one, less comedic more lyrical!
yes! Word Crimes is my favorite from his recent stuff.
Party in the CIA is pretty good And the video is American dad.
Word Crimes is absolutely genius lyrically! Cliff definitely needs to react to it!
@@LadyDragonborn No lie, I learned things from that video! Most fun I've ever had with words.
you're gonna like weird al's smells like nirvana.
plz vote this up
Al gets lots of guest stars in his more recent videos. You ID’d Key & Peel and Seth Greene. The guy wacky dancing behind him was Donny Osmond. Keep an eye out in other videos for more guest appearances- or go straight into “Tacky” which is just a series of guest stars.
also the two black guys sitting on the bench at least one of them is somewhat famous.
“Fat” was his breakout. It holds up. He does a spot-on James Brown in “Living with a Hernia”
I think you mean "Another One Rides the Bus", which was his first song to chart (1979). "Fat" didn't come out for another nine years.
@@aschulte7502 You're absolutely correct, but I think Like A Surgeon put him on the map globally.
@@aschulte7502 no, I was legitimately mistaken. “Fat” is still a classic though.
"Another One Rides the Bus" was his breakout. 1979 I think. "Fat" was 11 years later. Loved him on the Dr. Demento Show back in the day.
Another one rides the bus and my bologna ( my Sharona by the Knacks) got him a spot on the Dr.Demento show. Recorded in the washroom of his college dorm. He was studying architecture. He got his degree BTW. Just rather make music and his big breakout globally would be the 1st parody for and of Micheal Jackson, Eat it! Micheal insisted on working with All he loved his work that much. Yes the 2nd one was Fat (Bad). All called his album Even Worse!!
😅😂 Now talk about a double pun. " oh you bad eh? You think you something. Well I am even worse!"
And a comment on the quality or lack thereof of the work. As in if your new album is bad, mine's even worse than yours.😂❤❤
As I'm sure many people have commented, He always asks permission from the artist (even though its not required legally) In the parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" which is called "Eat It" Michael even made sure that Weird Al had access to the sets that were used in the original. You gotta see the side by side comparisons. Not only are the songs lining up with the originals, the videos a lot of the time are shot for shot parodies.
Yes!!! Those side-by-sides are insane!
MJ actually offered him his own sets AND dancers for both Eat It and Fat! He was his greatest supporter! If you do a side-by-side of both songs, you'll recognize the dancers!
Bro you have to do trapped in the drive thru... its his trapped in the closet parody and it's next level. Also tacky is his Happy parody and the video is all in one take.
For the longest time like years I thought Trapped in the drive thru was an original. I think I found out just last year that it was off of an R. Kelly song. I don't k ow why I have never heard of the R. Kelly song. That was my youngest son's favorite for a long time.
That might kill him lol
Yes this
I can never get enough of Weird Al reactions. The JOY it brings me to see him bring joy to others is just. I love it.
React to “Couch Potato” - “Weird Al” Yankovic. Parody of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”.
Get this one some more likes!
He's so cool that even though he doesn't legally need permission to parody anyone's song he always asks anyway.
Al is the master of parody songs.
He's a genius when it comes to Parody Music Videos.
The greatest part about Weird Al parodies is that he never attacks anyone or ridicule the original.
Two quick comments....First, the last name is pronounced "Yank-o-vick"
Second....the one thing that gets less attention than it should is this isn't just Al doing karaoke over the original tracks. His band is PHENOMENAL. These are completely new recordings made with Al's band sounding exactly like the original. And they don't just work it out in the studio until it's right. They do all of this live, dozens of shows every year or every other year.
this was number 1 in the uk charts back when i was younger lol
yes here in holland too ☺
The next one you HAVE to do is "It's All About the Pentiums" which is a parody of "All About the Benjamin's"
Chamillionaire actually loved this song. "The multi-platinum artist is happy to hear the new version, and holds no grudges towards Al. Cham said, "He's actually rapping pretty good on it, it's crazy...He's Grammy-nominated, man. He goes platinum. It's really an honor when he does that. I remember when he redid Michael Jackson's 'Bad.' Weird Al is not gonna do a parody of your song if you're not doing it big. You gotta be a big dog. He shot the video, and people will see it pretty soon. It's crazy."
Weird Al is highly regarded for his ability to closely mirror the original song, something impressed Chamillionaire as well.
"He's spittin' just like Krayzie Bone on the second verse...It's actually very funny if you listen to what he's saying. The way Krayzie is harmonizing, he does the same thing. It surprised me. I didn't know he could rap like that."
Im pretty sure he actually thanked Al in his award speech because this version got a lot of people to check out the original.
As for Seth Green, he's a huge nerd and into collecting, so he fit perfectly. The guy dancing behind Al was Donnie Osmond, the epitome of white and cringe, so it worked as well.
Initially he didn't like it but soon came around to really liking it
@@bradturner8552Lol yeah.. came around when he saw how much more attention *his* song was getting because of the parody.
That's the effect Al has and why sooooo many artists love when he parodies them. Because it not only means that 'they made it', but they *know* it will also boost the popularity of their original song. Its usually a win-win for the artist and Al.
Klingon is an actual language (yes, from Star Trek). Any good nerd is fluent in Klingon! (Full disclosure: I have a first edition version of the Klingon Dictionary in my library). Guess I’m too white and nerdy :)
Al parodied Ridin’ Dirty video really well in this one. Using Key and Peele as gangsters and Donnie Osmond as his “backup dancer” is just another testament to Al’s genius.
Like I said Java script is a website coding language. Lol im white and nerdy.
You can learn it on DuoLingo!
Klingon is also a programming language, based on C++, so a bit of a double joke for programming nerds😁
@@thesingingwoodturner2614 I didn’t know that but it’s amazing!
Klingon is a beautiful language, hard to learn but fun to speak.
Word Crimes is great, Whatever you like is awesome, Grapefruit Diet and That's your Hosroscope for today are 2 very great underrated songs but are awesome.
The Night Santa went Crazy by Weird Al is incredible, you will absolutely love it!
There's also his older Xmas song, 'Christmas at Ground Zero'
@@TimBrazeau Both of these songs are on my listen list for December 24th.
For some reasons I don't understand, people tend to pass over his parody of Living on the edge by Aerosmith Wich is called Living in the fridge! Wich I personally think is absolutely hilarious! Love that you finally tumble down this amazing rabbit hole that is Weird Al Yankovic! Love and respect to you from Quebec my human brother!
There are few artists that DONT see being parodied by Weird Al as a badge of honor
Weird Al is so freaking talented, love him
The guy who was dancing in the background behind him was Donnie Osmond. He was the youngest of a brother singing/dancing group in the 70's and was almost as well known as the Jackson's (Michael Jackson) brother group back then.
Its spelt Donny not Donnie.
The best advice I can give anyone when digging into Weird Al is to do your research on what song he is parodying and watch that video right before you watch Weird Al’s video. Even if you do it off camera, you will appreciate the man 100 times more.
He ask permission to the artist or their management before he does a parody. The only artist that said no was Prince. AL said he wanted to parody "Little Red Corvette" & the "Purple Rain" soundtrack but Prince said no. Eminem would not let Weird Al make a video but gave permission for him to parody "Lose Yourself" as an audio only which Weird Al titled "Couch Potato:
I think that Paul McCartney also said to "Chicken Pot Pie"
Michael Jackson basically gave him free reign for sets and music for parodies, except for the song "Black and White" which he said Al couldn't parody. A lot of the James Brown production team got on board for Al's parody of his song.
Love Weird Al. If you're looking for more recent stuff try "Tacky", a parody of Pharrell's "Happy", or "Foil", a parody of "Royal" by Lorde
That's the legendary Donny Osmond dancing behind Al. Al told him to just have at it and improvise to his heart's content. Donny said it was one of the best times he'd had recording on a video.
"Hardware Store" and "Bob" really shows how good he is at writing lyrics. Both you have to listen carefully and Bob you really have to pay attention to how the words are spelt. Personal favorites would be "Ricky", "Word Crime", "Living with a Hernia", "Eat it", "Jurassic Park" and "Saga Begins".
the film U.H.F. is a also a must watch. no reaction video needed, just watch it at one point. you wont regret it
Weird Al can spit so much fire, he makes dragons envious.
Your Star Trek>Klingon>Kirk or Picard knowledge fills me with great joy! You bring honor to your house! ❤️
Detail: Jordan Peele locks the car door, even though they're in a convertible, with the top and windows down.
Musically, there's nothing this man can't do!
2 things. 1: It's All About the Pentiums
2: There is a version of this video that is just Al and Donny Osmond "dancing"
The only thing that would have made this perfect for a man of my vintage, would have been if you recognised Donny Osmond in his cameo as well as Seth Green. My old man's brain was blown when Seth was in Mass Effect 2 but it's great that you get so many references. Keep up the good work gent!
Donny Osmond hyperactive dancing is hilarious.
He also did a cover of Doddy’s “All About the Benjamin’s”. Ack in the 90’s Cale’s “All about the Pentiums”; yes, another nerd rap parody and it’s also pretty great.
My absolute favorite Weird Al song!
On a side note! I'd love to understand people like Stephen Hawkins, and I actually watched Star Trek as a kid!
A lot of reactors don’t get the MC Escher reference either, which surprises me. A simple Google search would solve the mystery. Definitely an underrated “nerd” reference (since most of Escher’s drawings were mathematically inspired)
Someone actually went through and did a mashup of this and Ridin Dirty. Every other beat, the song switches between each version. It’s friggin insane how on point Al was compared to the original lol.
Big recommend to either Tacky or Foil next 👌🏽
The Tacky single shot video is absolutely amazing. Very well done.
As an older nerd I get all those references, most of which you're missing. And I was actually on the chess team as well as the science club. And played D&D. Damn I was such a nerd.
The guy dancing with Al near the end is Donnie Osmond. He's probably the opidemy of 'white' but he was a good sport and cameoed in this video as a shot at his perceived image. There are so many meta jokes in this song that you really need to listen to it a few times to even hear most of them. Good stuff!
I'm absolutely loving your reactions to his music. I had this song on my MySpace page ages ago. Yes, Klingon is a race in Star Trek, and the language is a real thing that you can learn. (Yes, I'm white and nerdy) I'm nearly 50 and I've been listening to Weird Al since I was a teenager. "One More Minute" is one of my old favorites. As far as newer stuff goes, I'd recommend "Word Crimes".
One More Minute, an original doo wop song. Haven’t heard that in ages. I’m also near 50, but not white Andy nerdy. Asian and autistic.
I was around 18 when I first discovered Weird Al!! (I'm 59 now)
He makes me laugh no matter how many times I hear his songs!!
Please check out Weird Al's take on Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit!!
Classic!!! Weird Al's version is called Smells Like Nirvana!! Please do!!!
It's worth your while I promise!!!
Trapped in the drive through is one of my favorites
I've read that The Red Hot Chilli Peppers weren't too thrilled about "Bedrock Anthem" but that's a rare exception
Weird Al is a legend in the art of parodies 💯🤣🔥
The guy dancing with Al is former teen heartthrob actor and singer Donny Osmond who could be seen as "White and Nerdy" due to the fact that he was brought up Mormon.
The funny thing is Weird Al's parody of this song got so popular, that when Riding Dirty finally made its way around the world, people thought it was a parody of White & Nerdy lol.
Finally broke down and looked up the equation Al and Donny Osmond were dancing in front of. Apparently it's "the time independent Schrodinger equation for two elementary charges with a Coulomb interaction." And now you know as much as I do. 😂
Eat It and Another One Rides the Bus are two of my dad's favorite ones of Al's parodies. And in the Eat It video, Michael Jackson had loaned Al his iconic jacket from the Beat It video.
Weird Al gets permission to do parodies of songs, and it's probably an honour to have all do one of your song
Hahah! YES! Glad to see this one so soon.
The adorable dancing man behind Al through the later half of the video is Donny Osmond, famously from "The Donny and Marie Show" (1976) and the Osmond Brothers group. The whitest little Mormon that ever lived. When Al called him and asked him to help him out, Donny jumped at the offer and put his heart and soul into his performance.
Donny Osmond dancing in the background was so perfect!! I had such a crush on DO when I was a tween!
Artists know that when Weird Al does a parody of their song...they've made it!! 😁Its an honor to strive for!!🎶
The new dance in behind weird Al is Donny Osmond🤟🏾🖤👍🏾🖤
Seth Green was the action figure guy, he is a huge collector of them. You need to do Word Crimes by him, parody of Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke
there's a point where i noticed: "i can't do this", - then i watched you power through this. i went to a live performance of this 6 years in a row.... it came back and then "pop-pop"....
Donny Osmond dancing in the background kills me every time 😂
Stuck in the Drive Thru is another great parody by Al.
I said it (days later) on the first one, but there is an Al song for damn near everything. Whether direct parodies or a style/artist pastiche? He’s got a song for EVERYTHING
Did you see it was Donny Osmond dancing in the background in those "white and nerdy" choruses?
Donny did an excellent job! You can tell he had a blast doing this!
Another cover of his that really hits that nostalgia is All About the Pentiums, a cover of All About The Benjamins. One of my favorites for sure.
The guy dancing with him is Donny Osmund.
The lady getting the surge protector is Judy Tenuta. Weird Al's friend in real life. She is a stand-up comedian with an accordian and an attitude. UA-cam has her. I like the one that starts "Hi Pigs".
I guess Cliff doesn't know who the goofball dancing behind Al is some scenes of this. LOL It's Donny Osmond!
Classic Al. Even with Donny Osmond dancing in the background!
Recommendation: I Smell Nirvana - Weird Al - if you haven't done it yet.
Weird AL is so freaking talented and he can actually rap!
I'm so happy to see you laugh as I was laughing along with you 😄!
We all missed you! I'm so freaking over the moon you are back my internet friend!💙💙
That’s Donny Osmond dancing around.
The Osmonds were a family group like the Jackson Five. Donny was their Michael.
He and his sister Marie(their Janet) had a very popular TV variety show: The Donny and Marie Show.
That is Donnie osmond dancing in the background…what a good sport to be in the video.
I can't believe u didn't mention the amazingly white dancing by Donny Osmond in the back.
Check out the green screen video of Donny Osmond doing his dance behind Al. The crew was literally rolling on the floor but Al had no idea what he was doing back there until he watched the playback. It does not get more white and nerdy than Donny Osmond!
"HARDWARE STORE" is the most EPIC of all his Rap Songs, it's not a Parody but I promise you will be AMAZINGLY IMPRESSED by his flow.
The last guy dancing with him is Donny Osmond. He and his sister Marie Osmond were singers that were seen as extremely goody goody.
Weird Al writes incredible parodies AND originals! He's a freaking Polka God. He realized early on that he was a certain type of dude and he fkn ran with it. Al has a prolific career that has spanned multiple decades and I dont see him slowing down any time soon!
Another homerun, Lord Cliff. Check out, Weird Al, Word crimes. That is a personal favorite of mine.
Long live the AoD, The Sewer Rats, & the great community we have here.
Much love to everyone from here in the UK
Weird Al has always asked the original artist for concent and permission from them to do a parody and if someone said no he would say ok no problem but in the hight of weird al sometimes even played on radio stations there was a thing called the weird al bump that whatever song he parody the original song would get a bump again on the Billboard chart's
What's weird (pun intended) is that very few reactors mention Donny Osmond's appearance in this video!
Donny Osmond is dancing behind Weird Al.
As others are saying, 'Hardware Store' is a great track to do next.
would like to point out the talient it takes to pariody a song , recreating the song sound the hook and all improvised by this guy. he deserves the grammys.souer stoked you got to this one ..
Yoh lnow you have a special place in the music hierarchy when Donny Osmond is your backup dancer
Handy, Tacky, Party in the CIA, just listen to all of Al's songs. He's just so clever, it's unbelievable.
I think you would really enjoy Hardware Store by Weird Al, there's no official video so a lyrics video would be something you should look for.
Also any of the Polka Medley's
Seth Green was in Buffy the vampire slayer. He's also made Robot Chicken and is a somewhat nerdy icon. Also Klingon, ... my hubby is pretty fluent in it. And I think it's amazing. We're super nerdy the both of us.
So satisfying to see someone hits all the fun parts I like about Yankovic's music. Also if your father hasn't seen Galaxy Quest (or you for that matter), have a movie night NOW. GO. I'll wait.
YES YES YES! A Galaxy Quest and Spaceballs double feature even. Nerd gold and non stop laughs right there!
He always asks permission before he releases his parodies. He also does style parodies, like "Germs" in Nine Inch Nails style.
Hey, bootleg was the only way we could get the Star Wars holiday special back before UA-cam!
I would recommend foil by him too
