And using a 24kw-30kw Leaf, not these expensive big battery cars which I personally could not justify spending the money on. I would rather buy a 12 month old £15,000 petrol car and have £20,000 sitting in the bank. (That would buy a lot of petrol) 😁

    • @LysanderLH

The answer is, it depends on the range of the EV being used. A long range Tesla vs a 30kWh Zoe are two very different propositions in Winter. On motorways. With heating, lights, satnav radio on. My neighbour’s 30kWh Zoe now achieves around 80 miles per charge. My 40kWh Zoe around 140 and that changes depending on road speed and how it’s driven.
EVs are still in their infancy. When was the last time you saw a video about testing the possibility of driving any other car 1400 miles over 48hrs?

    Next challenge :-
Drive to Barcelona and back during first two weeks of July. This would see the sort of impact that the use of AC would have on the mileage. Or Munich in Autumn to do the same for the heater, winter may be a bit of a push given the lack of sunlight. Both would require a couple of overnight stops.
Plus you get a decent road trip in another Octopus Electric Vehicle.

MAY BE TWO CARS challenge using only free chargers starting with a full charge and ending with a full charge at the end of 24 hrs drive see how far can drive bit like a grand tour events.
needed full info on distance between chargers and who much charge the car had at each charger,
what you charged it too and how long it took
so then you would have miles per kwh between each charger.

My i3 only has a 80 mile range in summer and about 60 mile range in winter. I wouldn't do that route in my car, its more of a short journey city car.
Did you have the heating on? What mode was you driving in? Eco+ or Comfort? How long was each of your charge sessions? What was your average speed? The BMW i3 app would of given you some nice stats about each of your driving sessions, you only need your VIN number to make it work which is on your windscreen. It would of shown you how much you were regening your driving efficiency and distance driven since last charge.
    Happy New Year. 🥳

What happens if you are at the limit of your range and the charger isn't working or is incompatible? A night in a hotel where they might allow you to charge it overnight? A call to the AA for a tow to the next charger? That would do my box in tbh. Thanks for the honesty, you could have glossed over the non functioning charging points, it highlights that the network is still patchy and that the best policy is to plan a long journey in an EV meticulously, so you don't find yourself on the back of a recovery truck.

@@ElectricVehicleMan I wouldn't even try it. Me and my partner attempted the NC500 this July due to how the sensitive the Zoe is to earth leakage detection/safety system. I had researched the route with several backups and none of the ChargePlaceScotland network would work besides the rare Polar network but they were 7 Kw posts. We had to abandon the car in Inverness and hire a car, due to arriving with 11 miles of range and trying to find a charger that would work. If it was not for a hotel kindly allowing us to use their 7 kW post I wouldn't have been able to drive back. Based on the experience from CPS posts I would not recommend doing the NC500 in the Zoe as you cannot trust them to work with the Zoe.Even the Ecotricty posts would not work, the only thing i could point it down to was the earthing was not amazing. However I would love to do it in any other BEV. The weird thing was it was as soon I crossed the border and when we drove back we literally did not have any problems with the charging networks here in England.

    • @LysanderLH
      @LysanderLH 4 роки тому +2

Electric Vehicle Man due to the useless Earthing system of the Zoe, I NEVER.... NEVER...now concentrate on this next word.....NEVER..... drive anywhere that requires us to use a public charger any more. We have owned our Zoe for just over 6 months and for the first couple of months we tried to drive from Brighton to lots of places but each time I tried to charge (I have several charge network RFID cards), I ALWAYS....without exception, ended up having to call the network operator to discuss remotely resetting their charger due to BCI warnings etc etc. Eventually, it became clear that if we travelled away from home for more than 50% of our charge, that we would need to be towed back. 50% of charge in Winter (even having to make this point pisses me off) is about 70 miles max! So we have a car that will allow us a range of 70 miles each way! So if Christopher Carr can’t use the first charger he finds because it won’t let him charge and the second one either doesn’t work or won’t allow a charge, what then?!

@@alaneasthope2357 Thanks. I love his channel, but he mainly focusses on driving in Norway where he lives (or lived before moving to Thailand). I would expect the charging network in Norway to be the best in all of Europe, as they have the highest proportion of electric vehicles. I wouldn't even be asking if I was going to do an EV trip around Norway. 😉

Most people forget that more than 100 years ago the first gasoline cars had to buy their fuel at the pharmacy in cans of 5L. See it now with the emergence of the electric charging points as before for the gasoline car, we get used to it.

As long as the car as an active cooling system (which the i3 does) it shouldn’t affect the charging speed at all. If you don’t have one (e.g the Nissan Leaf or VW e-Golf), then multiple recharges would likely result in throttling to avoid overheating the battery.

Chris Abbott my friend in England with an EV says that the charging network in Scotland is better maintained than in England so you have a much better chance of finding a working charger. Plus, the Scottish Government seem to have put in investment to encourage the installation of chargers. You really need both these aspects to have a good EV experience.

Having done the west part ( far better than the NC 500 proper) Fort William to Durness via Plockton and Applecross etc many times. I’ve been watching charge points closely as the dream to do it in either and model 3 or Y and back to Glasgow. Sticky point seems to be near Durness as it’s hit and miss. Nice seeing Applecross and the pass. Done it mostly under blue sky but have done the pass in thick fog. Sorry did you say this was done in August ? The trouble is in the summer you couldn’t do a EV road trip with friends. I’ve done it with 17 other cars in our group, we turned the Ullapool garage into a car park till we all filled up. Why no Durness charger is that because it’s not worked in nine months.... Durness needs a charging hub sorted but us Scots will get there.
Brutal driving as I’ve usually done it usually over 3 days. Just to add I know you were in a rush but would have been nice checking places like Durness and reporting what you found. This route would catch EV drivers out if they didn’t watch. I’ve done Ullapool to Inverness with a Stop for the night at Tongue on one tank of fuel having brimmed at Ullapool. Got to Inverness with the computer saying 5 miles left in the tank, but then I wanted a Shell garage 😁. Once you can do the same in a EV it’s a no brainer.
As I’ve said the dream is Model 3/Y, Summer blue sky’s, free Scottish charging from Glasgow to Tongue and back following the west coast. Don’t think we are that far off👍

That's the whole point of the stunningly beautiful NC500 route, you will stop so many times, to take in the views and scenery, that using a fully electric vehicle is not the best solution.
If the weather is especially cold and harsh, then range of the batteries will diminish considerably.
You simply do not rush the NC500, and if you do, its a wasted journey.

Good luck doing 70mph on those roads. Forgetting the max speed limit of 30-60 on most did you not see the video? Oh and when was the last time you drove 28 hours with a 10minute break? It doesn’t happen in the real world! We slept overnight too so try a realistic comparison.

@@ElectricVehicleMan You're making straw man arguments. I get it you are on slower roads and did not say I would drive 28 hours straight (with out a 2nd driver). My point is my TDI Diesel blows away an electric car in a cross-country trip. As far as speed, typical speed on American freeways is 70 mph
(112 kph). I just did a 650 mile trip in one day on one tank. My trip computer average, 67 mph, that's including stop for bathroom. Total time 9.7 hrs. I also own a 2015 Nissan Leaf, great for short commutes to work, running errands around town. EV's are not practical cross-country cars by any means. That is my point.

Let's point out that you selected a vehicle with a pretty limited range and that many chargers that didn't work forced you to charge "just in case" when you could, so stopping more often and charging the partially full battery, which is slower. In, say, Tesla Model 3 LR or Hyundai Kona EV you would have to charge once, perhaps twice, at a much higher speed. So, you were _not_ trying to make it look easier than reality.
I like your travel-size salt and pepper mills :o)
