  • Finally, after a few months, here's the review of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (SR+) .
    The car is what most think it is, the industry leader, but Tesla themselves are letting it down.

      There are systems where adjusting the temperature setting "too high(/low)" will make you reach the desired temperature faster.
      If the temperature sensor is close to the hater, if might switch off early, while the surroundings are still cold.
      Most temperature regulators ar not designed for rapid changes in setpoint, but to keep a constant temperature. As they get closer to the setpoint, they might sliwly ramp the average output to avoid overshooting.
      If you have a simple thermostat, with the sensor at a good position, there is probably not much gain by setting the temperature too high. If you gave a regulator, you might experience some gain by lowering the thetpoint when you reach the desired temperature. Other regulators might have this built in, to give maximum output until reaching the setpoint, then switch to keep temperature mode.

    • @ontopoftheroof
      @ontopoftheroof 4 роки тому +1

      I won't tell her she's correct. Approaching the set temperature thermostats generally start to throttle so not to overshoot by too much of a margin but going into a smooth transient oscillation.

    • @98dizzard
      @98dizzard 4 роки тому +3

      I don't know where you two fellas are from, but modulating thermostats have only been available in the UK for a few years, the vast majority of thermostats in the UK are simple on/off affairs. So setting the thermostat higher makes absolutely no difference to how quick the house warms up.
      Unless some moron put the thermostat directly above a radiator, but I've not seen a mistake that stupid for a long while.

    • @thorbjrnhellehaven5766
      @thorbjrnhellehaven5766 4 роки тому

      @@98dizzard it is far from uncommon, to have heaters with built in thermostat, that is usually not a good solution, and can cause early shut off, before ambient temperature has been reached, but sometimes these thermostats don't have temperature scales, only a relative scale.
      The temperaturecontrol in my car will ramp down fan speed, as it gets closer to the setpoint, long before the interior has reached that temperature. To force full blast it is easier to change temperature setting than charging fanspeed manually.
      But of course, with a plain on/off thermostat at a propper position there are little to no gain, by changing the setting.

    • @98dizzard
      @98dizzard 4 роки тому +1

      @@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 in the video he is referring to "thermostats", which in the UK would almost exclusively mean central heating thermostats. They are 99% of the time just an on/off switch. Setting a higher temperature would not make the house warm any faster. The heating is already on, and on full.
      He is not referring to in car climate control. Which we would call "Climate Control".

    Hi, I am not a Tesla expert but I believe I've seen in a video that the glove box being buttonless is by design. Apparently, there is a Valet Mode and when activated it locks out access to the glove box and limits the car's maximum speed. So what seems like a nuisance is probably a potentially useful security feature.

      No, in the Model S and X, the glovebox is opened with a physical button to the left of the screen.
      Security has nothing to do with the lack of a button, it's an electronically opening glovebox and both the physical and virtual buttons just send an open signal.
      The only reason there's no button is design.

    • @miyuden4118
      @miyuden4118 4 роки тому +4

      @@joj. S and X came before 3 and Y. Probably the idea of that security feature came also after S and X. I have no idea. I would prefere a button as well. And it's not hard to lock that button from working either. It's just another locking function.

      @joj. 4 роки тому +6

      @@miyuden4118 I don't think you understand.
      S and X have a physical button to open the glovebox, and the glovebox is locked in valet mode/Robotaxi mode. The button just doesn't open it, same as when the 3/Y is in valet mode.
      The only reason there's no physical button in 3/Y is that they didn't want to put one in.

    Really nice video - and to repeat what other posters have said - a large number of the functions can be controlled by voice commands. Once you have that sorted you hardly have to touch the screen. And to expand on the running costs - your main point about the initial upfront cost is spot on. Once you have got over that it's so easy. After 30,000 km the net direct running cost for our Model 3 was $29.15 - occasional supercharging. All of our other charging has been with excess rooftop solar. Maintenance costs have been zero. Its a great investment - no going back.

    Regarding updates, I believe one of them took the 0 - 60 time down to 4.9/5secs. The initial thrust is the same, but it picks up quicker...great for overtaking, entering motorways, taking off at roundabouts etc. They're very efficient.
    The engineering inside the bodywork, is truly outstanding, and the interior is comfortable and 'easy clean'...stands up to kids well.

    I’m right handed and have occasional difficulty operating touch screen with my left hand when driving - plus and minus on AC fan control for instance. Have also concluded it’s easier to set the regenerative braking to lower when on longer motorway journey as any slight easing of accelerator pedal reduces speed reactively and makes maintaining a constant speed that bit more difficult - reset back up for urban use and regain full benefit. Overall ‘mustn’t grumble’ a great drive and my grand kids love it.

    Mine also is a boot slammer, however for the proximity chimes there appears a speaker icon on the display just below the speed (in the artificial view area), if you touch it you can switch them off. Also, the speed limit sign on the opposite side can be touched to get your cruise control to the GPS/Map current speed (which may or may not be out of date due to the map). Small nuggets learnt through RT(F)M. Great video and a good honest review.

    Thanks for an honest, comprehensive and informative review. I have been thinking of buying a Tesla 3 for a few months. The performance is bonkers, range more than enough and the value for money pretty remarkable. The things that are making me hesitate are I don't like relying on the touchscreen for everything (I really don't accept a screen is better than a dial for aircon control) and the lack of an instrument cluster. However no other car seems to match it when considering what you get for the money. The launch version of the VW ID3 is almost the same price and I really struggle to think of a good reason to buy the ID3 for pretty much the same price as the Tesla 3, especially given what looks to be a very low rent cabin in the VW (the cheaper entry level ID3 may be a great buy, but not at 40k for the launch car).

    You did the right thing by ditching (carefully storing for sale day) the aero wheel trims in favour of the much sexier alloys hiding underneath. The centrecap/wheelnut cover kits available cheaply on eBay finish them off nicely. Next, indicators (much better once you find out you can cancel them by pushing second time in the same direction).
    Auto dipping headlights (end up just operating manually). Best to leave "normal" lights in auto, because there's no dashboard illumination not coming on to warn you if your lights are off. Driving lights mean it's not obvious they're not on in built up areas.
    Wiper controls. Auto sometimes a bit slow to start, and sometimes a bit slow to stop.
    Definitely the best EV on the market. Nothing else can eat the miles with so little planning ahead.

    Went for a test drive today as the Mrs fancies one. Personally Im waiting for a Y because Im a hatchback person and will sometimes go to the tip or down B&Q. We both drove the standard range and both loved it and can say it feels quicker than my stage 1 golf R with a also remapped dsg box due to the lack of input lag. As Im planning to get a Y when it comes to the uk I will now be buying the model three for her and The golf will have to go since it owes me the most money and use her old car until then but also borrow the m3 from time to time. Also went for a spin on the performance model and boy that is another level yet again. Will use your referral link as you've made some good contributions to the EV cause.

    I still prefer the Kia e-Niro, especially now its available to order in 4+ spec with sunroof, heated and cooled seats, LED lights, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic...about 37k and its a hatchback... oh and 7 year warranty. Its narrower and 10.6m turning circle makes it easier to drive in the UK. The Tesla clearly has advantages for some, including the slightly better performance, handling, and charge network. Its wonderful we now have a choice of such great cars. We have nearly a 1000 members in the e-niro FB UK FB group, who on the whole are incredibly happy.

    Good honest review. Panel alignment does seem to be a bit of an issue with Tesla's. As you say if a service centre can fix it, why cant they just "triage" them before they go out. Wonder if its the actual design and/or the US manufacture. Would be interesting to know how they compare with the Chinese made ones, and hopefully the German built ones will be spot on.

    I've only got 3 minor issues with the "3". Not too bothered about panel gaps etc as long as they aren't blatantly obvious, you don't cut yourself on them, everything opens and closes easily and it doesn't affect the aero - a bad paint job seems to a concern though for some where its too thin in places etc .
    1. the front view - it looks unfinished, it should have something similar to the "S" front end
    2. the rear view looks weird and i prefer hatchback ("3" has the ability of dumping water into your boot from the lid if you open it after its been raining
    3. the control panel is on my left hand side and my left is my weak side so i'd be looking at the screen too long to do anything.

    • @brunosmith6925
      @brunosmith6925 4 роки тому

      These cars need almost no servicing. If there are manufacturing faults (as can be the case with any car) then to correct them does not classify as a "service". But as far as "regular servicing" is concerned, this car does not need any. Some owners of original Model-S Tesla's have never taken them for a "service". All they've done is replace worn tyres. The brake pads may never need replacing as the car uses regenerative braking. I hire Model-3 regulary (from Evision) and drive all over the UK. In a recent trip from London to York, I pressed the brake pedal only a handful of times, and very gently - such as when at a complete stop, to prevent the car from nudging forward. So you use the brakes mostly to keep the car still AFTER it has stopped. There is rarely a need to use the brakes to slow down - the regenerative braking does 99% of the stopping for you - no brake pads involved.

    There are kits out there that can convert both your boot and froot to power operation with soft close and optional hands free operation.
    There are quite a few aftermarket kits available for the model 3, including mobile phone wireless charging and head up displays.
    Shouldn't have to purchase these kits as for the price that you pay for a Tesla, they should be there.
    But it does give the owner the opportunity to personalise their car.

    Love my SR+ model 3. The amount of car you get for the money is ridiculous. Just back from a 1500km trip around Ireland, we have a scarcity of super chargers but a decent enough network of irish based chargers and the whole journey was an absolute joy. I spent 18e in total on juice for the whole journey. My previous car would cost me 10 times that in petrol.

    I agree the Model 3 is great. My other half was dead set against getting an EV to replace our BMW M135i. We had a test drive in the Model 3 and she was a convert. However, I also agree some of the build quality issues aren't acceptable and show a poor approach to quality control at the factory and dealer, as you say. They've been manufacturing them for nearly three years so there's no excuse. Also the supercharger network is key - 100% reliable in my experience, unlike the other charging networks. But I feel Tesla seems to be dragging its feet on rolling out new locations in the UK, some locations on their map have been coming soon for years. I would have been tempted by the Model Y next time, but for no obvious reason it's wider than the 3, which would make it too hard to get into my garage and would make the many narrow roads we have nearby harder to navigate.

      I'll tell you my take of why i'm going for Tesla Model 3, if you're interested (picked up from maaaany other owners, so not quite "my" take):
      1) you'll always have a new car, tecnology wise: over the air updates actually improve your car! M3s had two updates that gave more power/range and also maaaany new features
      2) only with a tesla you can travel without hassle, thanks to superchargers network (and the navigator who plans the trip for you including accurate suggestions on where to stop and for how long and -if really necessary- what speed to keep to make it there)

    Looking at getting a ‘3’ towards the end of the year, or early 2021. Just want to see what the ID3 turns out like, in regards to spec/prices/performance. Wanted to see if you considered the LR version, and also your thoughts on the Full Self Drive. I know this is expensive, but it appears that this will continue to increase in costs, looking at the Tesla reviews around. The SR+ does everything, just trying to see if the LR, or the FSD is worth considering? This will be my 1st EV purchase, so looking to get it right lol

    I prefer a hatch but I'm surviving with the trunk. I think the 65" TV test that some people tried and failed with the Model 3 is the moot subject as you can't pivot the box through the trunk opening. Ooh. 5:16 should never close the trunk by pressing directly over the car logo. I also keep a type 2 cable in the front AND back after the frunk mechanism failed and trapped my cables in there in December and it seemed likely I wasn't getting it fixed until the new year! 9:20 you can also use voice command to 'open glovebox'.

    A great & honest review thanks. I think it's human nature that when we make a decision we then convince ourselves that it is the right one & what we have is best, hence some fanboy channels banging on about the wonders of Tesla, pleased you haven't done that, it gets annoying. The point l think we as EV owners should be making, if we do want to see mainstream EV adoption of course, is how good they are. Tesla are the bench mark & are a great, but they aren't the best at everything, my vehicle a MY20 Kia Soul is wonderful but certainly wouldn't suit everyone. Of course we will always compare vehicles, but let's push the choice & benefits of EV ownership.

      Hi Mark... as I mention elsewhere on this chat, I hire Model-3 regularly from UK's Evision. (I don't yet own a Tesla) - and we hire them over weekends to do fairly long trips (300 miles and more). We generally take doggy with us -she's a smallish dog - and she has absolutely no problem hopping into the boot space. She loves the car as much as we do. Not sure what dogs you have, but ours manages to negotiate the boot's rim with relative ease.
