I really like the quick comparisons at the end. It would be great if you could do more of that with other pickups and tone/gain settings. Thank you.
Would LOVE to see the SH-6N compared in this context. Also adding coil split sound clips would be extremely helpful. So glad someone took the time to actually compare neck pickups on an even playing feild!
Thanks for doing this demo, its really helpful with the comparison pickups at the end of the video. 59 neck is always my favorite one but alnico II really nice too. Cheers.
Nice to have to the comparison at the end there :)
Have this PU in the neck position of my Tele. It's very musical sounding clean, blends well with the bridge PU (Pre B-1), and holds up really well on the drive channel. Can't see anyone going wrong with this one!
These are very useful, thanks!
Great review. Love it when gear reviews are done through tube amps.
Nailed it Darek!
Could you please tell me what is the output of this pickup when split ? I have this pickup in my Ibanez S540, and I'm looking for a single Coil pickup that would match Alnico 2 well, both when it's split and when it's not. Also, I own Ibanez S1 single coil pickup. Do you think it would match Alnico 2 pro well ?
What pickup would you recommend to get the closest Slash tone on a Telecaster ??
How would it be paired to a tb-10 on a les Paul?
I have this exact pickup in my charvel but it's really bright and I guess it just me
Love the clean sound of that pick-up.
I think that's the sound I'm going for. Pretty close to BB.
what would be a good choice for a PRS? The guitar is inherently bright so maybe the Alnico II or Blues set to bring out more bottom end and scoop the mids.
+Joe Renzetti I bet the Alnico II Pros or 59 set would be wonderful!
+Joe Renzetti I have them in a 1997 CE 22 with McCarty switching and orange drop capacitors. Very nice combination. My other two PRS's have the Vintage Bass and HFS which are much hotter pickups.
Would the Alnico ll on the neck make a good combination with a JB on the bridge? I'm between this or the classic JB/Jazz combo
The Jazz has a tighter, more scooped sound than the Alnico II Pro. The Alnico II Pro is creamy, like 2 sticks of butter. There are more pronounced mids, and a little less highs.
which one is better with sh6b distortion, this or jazz? I can't tell the difference tbh
The Jazz matches better EQ-wise with the Distortion, as it is brighter than the Alnico II Pro.
How well would this pickup pair with a pearly gates in the bridge in an sg?
A great combo! A 59 is also a good choice if you are looking for a more open sound.
That's the set up I have in one of my guitars and it is a fantastic pairing, sounds amazing!
I have alnico2 pro in neck & TB-11 custom custom in bridge of my strat...awesome set up
Question, since I have a 10.5lbs Les Paul with the alnico 2 pro will it sound good on a heavier Gibson guitar ? Like 10 to 12lbs? I asked cause I fear the alnico 2 slash model would be too warm for my Les Paul cause I heard non weight relieved/chambered les paul supposed to sound thicker and warmer than the modern 7 or 8lbs Les Paul.
Hi, I think the extra weight given by extra wood should affect the mids, as well as the bass on your current sound.
José & Íryam thanks
@@shawneec1111 how did this pickup work out for you? I'm thinking of getting it for myself, with a mahogany body guitar and I'd like a personal review
José & Íryam oh, to be honest I haven’t experienced it yet, due to dealing with a death in a family couple months ago and and recently the pandemic which shut down a lot of businesses in my city , especially instrument repair shop that modified guitar pickups . To be honest, after an hours of hard research on which pickup works best on a specific guitar, learning more history about my les Paul and configuration that goes along with it. So to furthermore I had a second thought on putting emg 57 or Dimarzio super distortion in my heavy Norlin les paul and I think those pickup would suit best for my style and would sound great in my guitar as well.
I am deciding between this and the Seth Lovers
Which one is the cleanest for the neck. I will be using the coil split.
My style of music is clean gospel?
Seth Lovers cannot be split, as far as I know. This one, or maybe a PG would be a wise choice.
SL can be split if you order them directly from Semour duncan.
@@RJ_HTx oh ok, ty
Hello SD,
Is this pickup with a Seymour Duncan SH-4 in the bridge a good idea?
Oh yeah! You will get warm tones in the neck, and all out rock with the bridge pickup. It's a great combo.
OK, thank you very much! I'll buy it tomorrow at the local dealer!
Can I pair it with JB on Les Paul?
DJ ashba does that listen to his videos and judge for yourself :)
I can't decide between this, the 59s, and the Pearly Gates for the neck. I'm looking for almost like a Warmer Burstbucker 2 sound.
I like the 59, but I kinda need 4 conductors...
You can order the 59s with 4 conductors...and the 59s have more bass than the Pearly Gates. The Alnico II Pro pickups are warmer than either of them, though due to the mids.
Seymour Duncan I've kinda sold myself on the 59s I think
Seymour Duncan If I were to replace the magnets with A3s on any of these it will give a clearer tone, correct?
An A3 will provide slightly less mids, and slightly more treble.
Would this pickup work with a Perpetual Burn in a maple body Steinberger?
Hey, I play Steinbergers, too! I use an Alnico II Pro in the neck of both of them, so yeah, they are an excellent choice.
Thank you so much! All-maple bodies are not common, so it's difficult to get pickup advice :|
Indeed, but for some reason, Ned Steinberger used them a lot. I use a Synapse now, but I've owned a ZT3 as well.
No power chords?
seymour duncan alnico combine pro II (NECK) with seymour duncan Dimebucker bridge.es a good idea?
Yes, this can work, but the Dimebucker has quite a bit more treble than the Alnico II Pro. You can also look at the Jazz for the neck.
+Seymour Duncan Unlike these volumes will take two capsules? And if so, you have a solution?
I am a little confused..please explain.
So, I'm planning on getting a 59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge in my Epiphone Les Paul. Would this be a good pickup for the neck position, or would the 59 be a better match?
I like the 59/Custom with the Alnico II Pro. You get warm and buttery in the neck, and tight and dynamic in the bridge. A great choice.
In case you're still wondering, I recommend a PG.
Does this work well for a guitar tuned in B standard?
+Christian Magnus Larsen Fladeby For tunings that low, I'd recommend the Sentient, which remains tight in lower tunings.
Okay, but isn´t that entirely a different pickup? I got the impression form Seymour Duncan page that its meant for metal..
+Christian Magnus Larsen Fladeby It is actually a lot more versatile than it sounds in the description. The Jazz would even work here. Pickups with A2 magnets might be too mushy in the lows for a baritone tuning.
how does it handle a bunch of reverb and delay for ambient guitar styles?
Well, that's exactly what I do with mine! I use it with tons of delay, reverb, pitch transposing, and loops. And I am using the Alnico II Pro neck 95% of the time. It is wonderful for those styles.
Seymour Duncan Sweet!
is this the same as slash alnico II pro?please reply
No, the Slash is slightly hotter..it has a different wind.
+Seymour Duncan i like the neck of this one..so round yet still has brilliance..slash still has round sound but not like this..
These with jb?
These (or a Jazz) with a JB makes a great combo!
@@seymourduncan Exactly what I've been saying!
Hey guys, I've just bought these pickups cuz I wanted Slash's sound, there was no option for Slash pickups.. Should I be bummed or these are OK for GNR style?
Adar Abadian how are they?
Does this sound like the slash alnico 2?
Catfish Connor It's quite similar but the Slash has boosted output to compensate for the chambering on modern LPs.
+Seymour Duncan Pickups But Slash's Derrig LP isn't chambered, what was used on that guitar?
+Fred Garvin probably the regular Alnico 2. Remember, Slash wasn't as popular and the Alnico 2 Slash probably came after his popularity rose.
I believe the Alnico 2 Pro could only be a good neck pickup choice if one is seriously skillful at composing nice melodies as the tonality has almost no teeth to be employed otherwise..
Not quite, the A2 may be a bit on the soft side, but the output is more than what you'd get from any other Duncan PAF-type, sometimes as high as 8.4k output. The high treble also compensates and bites nicely with the just right amount of gain
IMO that depends on the guitar and application, and what bridge pickup you want to pair it with. For lower output bridge humbucker, the APH-1 can be a good match. If you want more teeth, try putting an Alnico 4 magnet in the APH-1, although its still not a high output pickup.
Nice video but I'm listening to all this on youtube with a pair of usb speakers.. they all sound the same.
Wish these came single coil sized.
+FlyingSquirrelTony You can order single coil-sized versions from the Custom Shop!
+Seymour Duncan Pickups Thanks so much! Good to know. Hard to get a good neck pickup that retains single coil voicing or quack with low end rolled away that matches in volume well with a higher output bridge p/u like a JB under high gain applications, ie; Bogner Uber. It always seems that the neck pickup gets too creamy if the output matches.
Hey SD.. Can you please check this guitar tone out: ua-cam.com/video/dxbcuqj0FCU/v-deo.html
and tell me what pickups should I use in my LP for having this tone as the highest in my guitar, but also with a smoother tone for blues.. I've been seeing and I liked the idea of having the Alnico II pro neck and the 59' bridge. Anyway, what do you say to me?
Those sound like typical single coils to me, and have a fair amount of high end in there. You might take a look at a Pearly Gates set for something like that tone in a humbucker. I think the 59 and Alnico II Pro would be too smooth.
Do you think a LP with Alnico II pro and '59 plugged in a Marshall amp would be kind of that tone?
I like a lot Jimmy Page, Blackmore and Slash, so I'd like to have some tone like them, but also with a blues tone when the volume knob is down. What do you think?
Well, Blackmore is more of a single coil tone, unless you are talking about the 1st 4 Deep Purple albums, which he used an ES-335. If so, then, yes...that setup would get you close. Switch out to Whole Lotta Humbuckers for the brighter Jimmy Page tone.
Hey SD.. Me again lol.. I've been searching and I thought about Pearly Gates on the neck and Whole lotta humbucker on the bridge. I think this tone will be the one I'll take. I don't know why but I think this combination will be very cool. What do you think?
This is a great combo, and I think you will be happy! Let us know how this turns out!
Can you coil tap these?
+TheShawnee22 You can split these and wire them in/out of phase. They have 4 conductors. They are not tapped, unless you order them through the Custom Shop.
This video is Identicle as the last one I watched lol
