  • The Custom family provides three distinct but related humbuckers that are handcrafted in California. The Custom Custom gives you lots of midrange and a hotter than vintage wind. The Custom 5 gives you a little more edge and heavenly cleans. The Custom gives you all the edge and plenty of crunch.

    Great playing here! HOWEVER, each example rocks on for a while AND is totally different - makes it harder for direct comparisons. Quicker examples of clean, crunch, and high gain lead where you play the same thing each time make it easier to hear the differences between each pickup. (atleast for me anyway) Killer playing though!

      I agree. The examples need to be shorter and exactly the same. But it's still a decent demo of these pups. I dig all the Customs and own them all, but I find the original ceramic is still the best. I think they got it right the first time. I find the original has the greatest clarity and this is because of the ceramic mag. It also has the tightest low end. The Custom Custom, being alnico ii, is very good for a classic rock tone. It's similar to a Pearly Gates although with more output and less snarl. The Custom-5, with an alnico 5 mag, has the least amount of clarity, and it's not simply because of the A5 mag but rather because of how it's tuned. For what I play I need extreme clarity so I use pups lke the original Custom SH-5 ceramic, the Full Shred, Screamin' Demon, Distortion, Nazgul and Alternative 8, always paired with a Jazz neck. I use a medium gain setting most of the time or go clean for rhythm and a light boost for leads. I find these pups to really cut through with a lot of clarity, response and control.

      @@angusorvid8840 I have a Custom Custom in my Steinberger GR4, and a Custom 5 in my ESP LTD Horizon lll. Both cool pickups, though I wish the Custom 5 had a bit less of a mid scoop. I have yet to try the original Custom. Maybe one of these days...

    • @angusorvid8840

      @@stopthehate1749 I own all three. I prefer the original SH-5 ceramic because of the extreme clarity and control. I've been using it since 1986 as my main pickup. I've owned many other pickups, other brands, but the original Custom is the best. It's the pup Vivian Campbell used on Last in Line and Sacred Heart. I find the Custom Custom (A2) does not have enough low end for me, but is otherwise a fine pickup for most styles. The Custom 5 is a fine pickup too, but it doesn't have the low-end clarity of the original ceramic. I have no preference as to magnets as I know there are many factors that go into how a pickup sounds than magnets, but there is something to be said for the clarity of ceramics both as pickup mags and speaker mags. I love those old EV speakers with the giant ceramic mag that they used to load into Boogies. I'm a very high performance player, lots of very accurate alternate picking runs, and I need the clarity and response of ceramics. The SH-5 Custom ceramic is just the perfect pup for me and has been for over three decades now. I've used this pickup through thick and thin and just love it. The responsiveness is incredible. Amazing sustain too. It has just the right amount of output. I always found JBs to be on the muddy side with the low end. Never worked for me like the Custom, and the Distortion, although a fine pickup, is just too much output for my needs. Besides the Custom my other favorite Duncans are the Full Shred and Screamin' Demon, which are Alnico 5, but the reason I find them useful is their design emphasizes clarity over output. The single Allen pole coil on the Demon and double on the Shred emphasis the treble, which makes the low end clear while still being warm and sweet. A lot of players are torn on the Shred because they will find it to be lacking in low end because of its design, but a lot of djent players find it works like a charm for downturn because it retains clarity with extreme high gain.

      @@angusorvid8840 cool - I love Vivian Campbell's Dio era stuff btw! Yes, the Custom Custom could use a little more low end. Also I wish the Custom 5 had less of a mid scoop aka more mids.
      - You mention the JB. (I have a JB in my little Steinberger GLB, though its been disassembled for years) How does the Custom compare to the JB in terms of mids? I imagine it can chunk better because of the lows, but I also like my mids too. I don't like to scoop my mids out.

      I've been using the Custom series since the 80s. One thing I loved about the original Custom when I began using it in place of the JB was that it was tighter with more clarity on low end gain. It's actually a bit lower output than a JB. It's just EQ'd with a lot of bite. I think it sounds better with gain than a production JB. Great sustain, sweat singing high end, tracks like a tank. I also love the Custom Custom and Custom 5. They all rock. The C5 is also pretty tight with low end response. The Full Shred is also very tight. It's not as low endy as more djent specific pups, but you can pull off some djent stuff with a Full Shred because it's very tight and clear, has terrific crunch.

Ceramic being much stronger, mid-scooped, more gainy. Alnico 2 being the weaker magnet, mellow vintage sound, less bass, less trable and clarity, mid hit.

    I have the custom 5 bridge pickup in my yamaha pacifica 612. I honestly love the cleans and its THE MOST responsive/dynamic passive pickup I've ever played. Sadly the gainey tones from it are not my thing at all, it's way too 80s glam rockish when it's really pushed, but I can get a decent hard blues tone out of it with the coil tap. I'm thinking about replacing it, just not sure what with.

    • @WDeeGee1
      @WDeeGee1 4 роки тому

      Try replacing the A5 magnet with a roughcast A5: provided it indeed has a rough surface (some sold today are just silky, that won't make much of a difference), this will take away some of the glam rock slickness, though it's subtle. An unoriented A5 will give a bit more mids, and sound like a modern voiced A2, or a midrange heavy A5. You could also try an A4, which sounds quite different from an A5? It has a very direct attack like a ceramic, but without the scratchy grit (it's an alnico after all).

My pearly gates bridge pickup has low output around 7,2 and it sounds very wimpy and hold back. I wonder if the Duncan custom would be a better choice as it almost has the same eq, as the pearly gates only with more bass and mids.

    I prefer the smooth tone of the SH11 in the bridge. I've ran these pickups in my main guitars with 59's in the neck for studio and stage since the mid 90's.
    I have a custom in the bridge of a HSS configuration strat for that aggressive 80's hi-gain rock tone so it is very useable and necessary.
    I am intrigued by the alnico5 but have not yet tried them.
    To be continued..

      and what you'll get might sound different totally than what you guys heard here. All three sounds balanced and the same, cause the player doesn't hit as hard as the same in every pickup review. Just check how that finger picking he did for Custom, yet all hard picking with the Custom 5, and they sound basically the same at this video. Now don't tell us that finger picking doesn't do anything to tone.

      All 3 of these pickups are four conductor, which means they have the right wires to split. If a pickup says 'four conductor' in the description, then it can be split.

      Yes, this would work well. The Custom 5 is scooped, with big lows and highs, while the Pearly Gates is a little sweeter with some more high end. It should be a great combo in an LP.

    I was thinking of putting a Custom Custom at the bridge with a PearlyGates at the neck in an old hardtail Fender Lead, Will them pair well ? or is it better with the Custom 5 ? Im trying to aim for a good Bluesy/SouthRock sound ~

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому +1

      Cool guitar! This all depends on how much you like or need mids. The Custom Custom has a lot of mids, with less bass and treble. The C5 is the tonal opposite, with its big, open scooped sound. The C5, to me, sounds better with the Pearly Gates, but this depends if you need highs or not. Listen to your tone now. Do you need more highs or mids?

    • @sebasoc8405
      @sebasoc8405 7 років тому

      im sorry to ask again, but what about in the same situation a custom 5 against a JB in bridge position? (with a PG in the neck) that was my third option ~

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому

      A JB is great for any blues or rock with plexi Marshall-levels of gain in there- it has a midrange honk that works with old school hard rock and early metal. A Custom 5 is tighter, and more scooped. For bluesy southern rock though, I'd go with something a little more PAF-y, maybe like the Saturday Night Specials (see the video on our channel) or the Whole Lotta Humbuckers.

    Would the custom custom work well in an all mahogany SG Standard? I know an SG is already mid heavy and the custom custom has some pretty thick mids, would this be overkill? would the custom 5 be better or is that pickup too scooped? I want something that can handle higher gain doomy stuff but also clean up really well without being overly bright and brittle.

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому +1

      You might be better with the regular Custom. The CC may have too many mids..it works well in bright guitars, or really scooped guitars. The Custom 5 is good for mid-heavy guitars, as it is seriously scooped. The Custom is not as scooped but there is some there. It is really like a PAF with twice the power.

      i have the same problem 2yrs later with pickups for an ibanez s521 mahogany body. Heard that JB has too many high mids and ofc that custom 5 is the right one . Was it the right one for you though ? I can only find info dating 4 years ago and I can't decide lol.
      PS: People also reccomend distortions or full shred, even Invaders(if looking for an active sounding passive)
      Not to mention the craziness around DiMarzio with their evolution and d-activator.
      Really hoping Custom 5 is the THING 'cause i am almost convinced to buy it and most of the info i got is subjective. I guess its about preference. Mine is getting clear metalcore riffs and palm mutes, maybe even some djenty stuff, but still was hoping to get more specific info on my needs. I prefer the basic sets, rather than custom shop or more expensive pickups. So you recommend a pair of '59's? How would any of the Custom series work on that guitar?

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 років тому

      Yeah, go with 59s, then. The only thing I'd recommend from the Custom series is the basic Custom, but even then, it is hot, and slightly compressed. I think you would 'hear' the sound of the guitar better with lower output pickups like the 59s. You also won't have feedback issues common with higher output pickups and semi-hollows.
