Pearly Gates Neck Demo

- The Pearly Gates gives you that classic blues rock sound that is sweet with cleans but add some gain and you get plenty of attitude. It's a PAF with a unique tonal character and more midrange than typical humbuckers from that time. The result is a neck pickup that cuts through with its stronger tailored mids but still has the open and airy treble attack of the alnico 2 bar magnet. More info here: www.seymourdunc...

Excellent demo!!! Wish they were all like this!!
Awsome playing dude🤟🏻
This is an excellent demonstration method! THANKS!
Thanks for these videos, allowed me to make an apples to apples to apples comparison. I wound up picking the pearly gates. I only wish there was a video exactly like this for the APH-2n
Funny. That is also my only wish.
This is the best pickup I've ever heard by SD. Now if only they made a bridge that could compliment it
The Custom Shop 78 maybe
@@mustang1967coupe that is a nice pick up too...u might be on to something thanks
like a pearly gates bridge version, perhaps..
@@AcceleratingUniverse no doesn't do it for me, an alnico 2 magnet doesn't work in the bridge, only the neck...I need an alnico 5 magnet or ceramic in the bridge for more juice on my solos
@@cellulosefdr Custom Custom is A2 but that output is 🔥 I have one now it’s killer in the bridge
I bought it as a set on eBay because the price was good and I wanted to try new pickups..I knew very little about this pickup actually, but after playing it I was blown away by the clean sound of the neck pickup. After watching SD's videos of various neck pickups, I am so happy that I got the best for me. Only 59 and Alnico II pro come close. 59 has the warmth, but lacks the bell-ringing high-end. Alnico II pro has the ringing high-end and airiness, but loses in mid-punch and warmth. PG has those attributes, making it have more attitude. So glad I made the right choice.
(Btw the bridge also has really unique tone that you will not find in any other. it was superb for blues & rock, but I needed something more versatile and higher output so I sold it.)
Niels8 What’d you replace the PG bridge pup with?
@@AntwhaleNearfar I replaced it with 59/Custom Hybrid..
Thanks, really! This (and other ones I watched, too), IMHO, is the kind of test guitar players are looking for. Sameguitar, same amps, same chords, and a quick comparisson at the end. Excellent!
I have the bridge PG in a Gibosn SG with a Whole Lotta Humbucker in the neck. Both make the guitar sound like a vintage Les Paul :)
+Duke - SWT Mate - both the Custom and JB would be excellent choices.
interesting...from the chord comparison at the end the Pearly Gates sounds a little brighter and more present than the '59...probably most similar to the Alnico II Pro
I like this style of demo a lot. I have a PG in the bridge of my PRS SE Custom 24 and it's great. Been thinking about getting one for the neck, but I don't really use the neck pickup that much...
budgetguitarist.com I agree about the style of the demo; exactly the kind of precision that I would expect from Seymour Duncan. I was wondering whether I should get a DiMarzio Air Norton or Seymour Duncan Invader but now I am torn up between this and the 59 Bridge model for the neck..
budgetguitarist.com Like you did,I put a PG's in the bridge position of my PRS,which was made in 2006,still has the original pup's and the neck pikup had more gain than the PG's in the bridge, which is not going to work for me. I guess I'll need a neck version also.
Full Shred neck demo, please.
I have this neck pickup paired up with a bill lawrence l500xl.....Sounds so badass.
Same set up. Used to only play bridge OR neck, never together. However this combo changed that for me. They compliment each other so well. I use the Bill/Becky (Wilde) version of the L500XL but there probably isn't any noticeable difference.
I use one with a Duncan Distortion bridge. They are great.
just bought a zebra Pearly Gates neck to match my Dimebucker, for my Washburn x50 PRO FE. Didn't dig the 81/85, too tame, not enough squeals or pops. cant wait to put this baby in.
Can you guys do a direct comparison between the PGN and the A2PN
So far I'm liking the Jazz the most.
+flips220 That's one of my most favorite pickup as well but usually I love how it does brighten 22 fretted guitars. Somehow after doing all the tests and comparisons I found that for 24 fret guitars I like slightly more output and less treble in the neck pickup. Sentient perfectly matched my needs by far. Pearly Gates was lovely on a cruch tones...got a bit more high-midrange bite thean other...more "Texas" in it :)
I've got the Pgs in my Tele HH. I'll say this Bridge pup sounds great!!! couldn't be happier. especially after I lowered the pup almost all the way down. Neck pup not too fond of the overall tone. But it doesn't matter coz I'm on the treble pup 90% of the time. There are better choices for a neck pup. Eventually I'll change it out no rush .....$$
I've always thought the PG bridge pup is the most Tele-ish sounding humbucker I've ever played, but the PG neck isn't a good match for it. Too bassy. I've installed this set in 5 or 6 different guitars and never could bond with them. Maybe a Jazz neck would match up better.
strat cat71 the entire demo is on the neck pickup
This or the jazz for a telecaster neck?
I just ordered Pearly Gates / Jb combination for my ESP eclipse II ... i hope this will rock :)
It will do more than rock. Congrats! We think you'll love them.
I own also a PRS S2 Costum 24 with new SD Pickups Sh-1 59 neck and SH-5 costum bridge it really upgrades my guitar !! :)
Would it pair well with SH-5 (bridge) or '59 is a better neck pickup for rock/metal?
That piece he's playing in the beginning is so seductively beautiful you could probably sell any pickup with it.
Hey, nice video and sound. I want to pair the pearly gates neck with a tb-4 bridge in a ESP Horizon
, mahogany body, ebony freetboard and floyd rose bridge. What do you think?... or do I have to go for the SH-2n?. Will the pearly gates work?
Thanks
Sounds pretty good. Can the Pearly Gates pick ups be split for Single coil sounds too?
Yes
I'm torn between a Jazz-N or the Pearly Gates neck.
Which orange head and which cab is being used here during the "rock" portion of the demo? What a great rock sound with the PG!
Heyy..i want to upgrade my esp f50...should i go with these or alnico2 slash signature....i need good cleans, tight rock rhythm like sweet child rhythm sections and defined highs lows and mids...
Hi, I have a PRS SE Custom which comes with an 85/15 pickup. I will be changing the neck pickup for a pearly gates. My PRS has coil splitting which makes it sound like single coil. I need advice on what pickup I need for the bridge. My style of music is gospel, but I will be using the bridge for my lead solos and my neck for the rhythm parts. That said, i want a hotter pickup for the bridge, a pickup that would give me more output in bridge position than the pearly gates at the neck. What pickup do you recommend for the bridge please?
Ric Mel A Duncan Custom Hybrid will do the trick!
@@MrPrincebass99 Thanks very much for the reply
How would this cope with high gain neo classical type stuff? in a LTD Ec1000. Seems to have more mids then the 59 which im liking
This should do fine! The expanded high end will help cut through, as well.
thanks guys. plus it seems to have bit more mids in their to
Clean 0:43
I've got a Les Paul Traditional Pro that currently has zebra Alinco Probuckers in it, and I found a set of zebra Pearly Gates online that I might switch em out with, but I'm afraid they might have too much attack for the alternative rock style I'm playing(similar to Collective Soul and 3 Doors Down). Would they be a good fit for that style, or is there a better pickup for that flavor?
Alnico II sounds warmer
Hey! I want to combine sh-6's for bridge and these for neck. And I have an Epiphone Goth Explorer.
I say...DO IT!
got a YAMAHA SG2000, i would like a superb clean tone with middle output for the gain, kind of classic rock, blues and melodic rock, also the possibility of coil tapping. Do these do the trick?
+Jose Luis Hdez Yes, I would certainly consider the Pearly Gates as well as the Jazz.
I am putting together a chambered alder telecaster with maple/rosewood neck with 2 humbuckers. hoping to get 335/les paul/scofield jazz/rock/soul/funk type sound in a lightweight tele. I like to play lead in bridge position with very mild breakup with some tone rolled off (a-la scofiled). suggestions for neck and bridge pickups would be very helpful, thanks so much!
+toddelsliger It won't ever sound like a semi-hollow, but I might start with a Seth Lover in the neck, and a 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge with a switch to split the bridge pickup if you need it.
Witch is better for classic rock, the pearly gates, or the whole lotta humbucker?
Pearly Gates.
Would the PG work in a LP Custom Lite 2013.... would the depth of the p/u be a concern for a thinner body guitar
The PG has 'short legs' so it should be fine. I know some of the LP Lites of the early 90s are super thin, so not sure about the modern ones, but they should fit just fine. Chances are the pickups in that body now have short legs, too.
I got a pearly gates neck for my PRS SE Semi-hollow and was wondering what would be some other bridge pickups that would go well with the pearly gates neck? Other the pearly gates bridge, just to compare. Thanks!
+Shockwave11293 Besides the Pearly Gates bridge, I like the Custom for harder rock sounds, or Whole Lotta Humbucker for classic British rock sounds.
+Seymour Duncan Pickups Cool, Thanks!
I need more bridge pickup

Hi I have an Epiphone les Paul 100 and I want to put a Duncan custom would the PG match it well?
A PG in the neck is a great match for the Custom in the bridge.
Hi, I have a EVH Wolfgang. Would a PG neck and JB work well in the EVH Wolfgang hard tail,, ANYONE?????
John Potosky definitely
Si this pickup will sound ok in a LTD-EC200qm with a JB in The bridge?
It will give you a sweet, dynamic clear sound in the neck. Should blend well with a JB...I bet it would rock!
I have an Epiphone Black Beauty LP with 3 pups. What would be a good pup combination to drop in there? Also, what kind of guitar is that you are playing?
+Daryl Winn I like the combination of a Pearly Gates neck & Bridge with a 59 in the middle. That would rock! BTW, that guitar was made by Mayones Guitars.
what would you suggest to an epiphone broadway's neck?
Check out the Pearly Gates neck, the Seth Lover and the Antiquity. You may want to read our blog: www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-tone-garage/best-guitar-pickups-for-epiphone
Thanks for the reply. I'll definetly check it out.
does it goes well with a tb-11?
would it be a good match with the 57' plus bridge pickup in the epi LP tribute plus? is there any video of this
I think it would be a good combo, but as far as I know there isn't a video of this combo.
I have a Les Paul Style guitar (PRS SE Bernie Marsden) and I would like to switch the bridge pickup (SE 245) in order to get a bit more output. Which pickup would you recommend? Custom?
Custom hybrid
how would this pair with a distortion sh-6 at the bridge in an epiphone less Paul? I'm looking for crushing bridge tone and nice creamy leads from the neck pickup
+Patmclean232 I think it would be great with a Distortion in the bridge, especially in an LP. It would be a great combo for solos and rhythms as well, with no mud in sight.
Awesome! Thank you! I was thinking of going with the slash pick ups but I like this sound better. I like slashes sound but I think this would be the ideal sound I'm looking for
Would this pair well with a Distortion in the bridge? I’m deciding between this, a Jazz, and a ‘59.
I went with the Seymour Duncan Mayhem set. It’s a Distortion in both bridge and neck positions. It works pretty well with my musical tastes, and it’s pretty versatile. Cleans are a little loud, but rolling the volume knob down a little solves that.
I have that exact combo distortion in the bridge and PG in the neck.. Honestly I’m not fully that impressed with the PG in the neck..
Hey so I’m planning on putting new pickups in my Ibanez gio and I was planning on doing the invader in the bridge and pearly gates in the neck, would that work? (Also I wanted to tune it to dropped A so I’m sure everything would be a little different) I’m just really new to this and have no idea what I’m doing so I figured you guys would know
Did you ever end up doing this? I was actually about to do the same thing. I already have the pg in the bridge. I am trying to decide for the neck
Hello, do you think Pearly Gates Neck would fit rather bright PRS CE24 in pair with SH-6b? or should I rather go SH-2n (or maybe even 59n-4c)for neck? I wanna split the pickups as well, but I am bit worried SH-2 splits would sound too bright...cheers! :) (I play alternative metal) - also I play through Orange Rockerverb, EQ at center
The PG neck isn't super bright, so I think you'd be fine. I think it would blend well with the SH-6. The split sound of the SH-2 is pretty bright, though. Go with the Pearly Gates or even the Whole Lotta Humbucker.
cheers, thank you :)
I want yo put a SD SH-6 Distortion bridge on my Les Paul, what neck pickup should I pair it with? I play mostly Thrash and Hard Rock, but I want a little less hot neck pickup so I can have smoother and warmer clean tones too, which Seymour Duncan do you recommend?
Cheers!
+Aldo Zanelli You may want to check out the Sentient or the Jazz. Both will get you where you want to go, and are slightly different. You can compare them on our new website!
+Seymour Duncan thanks! I have one last question, do you have a neck version of the '59/Custom hybrid? or what if I put it on the neck?
+Aldo Zanelli I use mine with either a Jazz neck (on darker sounding guitars), or an Alnico II Pro for brighter sounding guitars. Currently, there is no neck 59/Custom Hybrid.
+Seymour Duncan I don't quite believe in dark or bright sounding woods but I get your point haha, I'll look for the Jazz ;) and that '59/Custom Hybrid neck pickup would be awesome! hope you get to make it, thanks for your time!
How would you compare this with the SD 59 neck?
The Pearly Gates has more high end than a regular 59. Great if you have a dark guitar, or want more edge to the sound.
Thank you!
I need more sustain please help me
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

lol I also uploaded a video demoing the PGn pickup today. ua-cam.com/video/K5ZAgFDrLeY/v-deo.html
Nice sounds but with disturbing side effect of making you play while gurning like a fat Amish dude. not sure i'll buy one now.
Lame music
