    Used to have this pickup on one of my guitars. I play mostly heavy music, so after a few months i replaced it for actives pickups. What a mistake , the Alnico 2 can deliver some serious heavy tones, it lets the amp do the job. I miss the tone so much i need to buy another set asap. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy tones on low tunings because of the mushy bass but for standard tuning to D tuning it will deliver crunch for days.

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 років тому +11

      +josefrancisco You might like the Sentient for heavy tones. Some people find the Alnico II Pro a little mushy for lots of preamp gain. The Sentient remains tight.

    i have this pickup in the neck of my godin summit classic ct and i love it. nice buttery tone and and the 59 in the bridge is a great compliment. pretty nice combo for blues/rock/metal. as long as you aren't tuning below D like josefrancisco mentioned.

    Great rocking demo! I think the bridge pickup is a bit bright compared to the neck. Would it make sense to combine the APH-2 Slash bridge and APH-1 Neck for this style of guitar?

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому +2

      This depends on what you are going for. Some people like a brighter bridge pickup, some don't. The Slash and the APH-1 are really close in tone, so it really is up to the individual player rather than hard and fast rules here.

    A question for the people at Seymour Duncan..I hope you can answer me...I am soon to receive a Squier Contemporary HH Tele and I was thinking about this neck pickup with a Custom Custom for the bridge. Do you think the combination would work? I was trying to cover lots of grounds there plus the scoil splitting sounds. I loved the sound of the Custom Custom demos on youtube and the mids and presence to it. I previously had a JB, but I found it somewhat icepicky. And I am looking for a clear, vintage almost P90 or single coily sound for the neck (or as close as I could get). So that´s why I thought about the Alnico II Pro for the neck, but I think the 59 could also work.
    Since it is a Squier, it would require F spacing (trem spacing for SD, right?). Normally, online sellers bundle a trembucker for the bridge with a regular spaced humbucker for the neck. However, for what I have researched, for Fender guitars (or Squier, for that matter), both pickups need to have f-spacing, right? So I would then, have to buy 2 separate trembuckers and put covers on them to avoid the neck pickup that should have to be reversed placed to look bad? Or do you think it would work with no technical problems and /or aesthetic pole misalignment issues?
    Thank you in advance for your answer. Cheers

    Cool video. I have a Gibson LP classic 60s reissue that has a Seymour Duncan in the bridge position. I really want something with more attack and a bit more bite for the bridge. Considering pearly gates vs slash vs whole lot of love. It sounds like any of those three would give me more attack or bite, but the PG or whole lot of love would be hotter options ? Thanks !

      Check out MY RUIN, SEVENDUST’s (Chapter 8 album), GODSMACK, & VAN HALEN (fair warning album). You can still be heavy, but with a different attitude & style. They use Pearly Gates, Custom Custom, & other Alnico 2 humbuckers on those albums. I know MY RUIN has been using something similar to APH-2s for a long time now & they’re really heavy!

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 років тому +1

      I think the Pearlies might be a better match, as they are EQ'd towards the high end. The Slashes have a little more mids and slightly higher output than the Alnico II Pros.

    Hey SD, how does the Alnico Pro 2 bridge compare to the Pearly Gates bridge and a Whole Lotta Hunbucker bridge? Any comparison demos? Which would you say is more suited to grunge and alternative rock like Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins where it's 70% dirty and 30% clean riffs. Thanks!

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому +2

      We don't have any direct comparison demos, but the Alnico II Pro is warmer than the PG ans the Whole Lotta Humbucker. The WLH is a true 'hot PAF' set while the Alnico II Pro has a vintage output. The bass on the WLH and PG is tighter, and more percussive, while the Alnico II Pro is smoother and creamier than either.

    I need a humbucker to work in the bridge of an hss alder/rw stratocaster with 250k pots, considering Pearly Gates, is A2 pro an option? this guitar is the sss version of 90s lonestar strat which came with a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge, I dont know what electronics was in that guitar though, mine has got to work well with 250k pots.

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому

      You might want something a little brighter than the Alnico II Pro if you are using 250k. Check out the 59, the Jazz bridge, the regular Pearly Gates, and the Whole Lotta Humbucker.

    • @emreemre369
      @emreemre369 7 років тому

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому

      It has more high end than the Alnico II Pro. Try it with 250k pots. I've heard it sound good, but in some guitars it might be too dark...I then would bump up the pots to 500k.

  • @mkenny17

    is this sweet sounding pickup is good for metal? or probably JB is a better option.

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 років тому +1

      What kind of metal? Generally, modern metal has a very tight bass thing going on, which the Alnico II doesn't really have. For older classic stuff, like early Sabbath, it will work well with a fuzz pedal and detuned 1.5 steps. But for modern stuff, look at the Pegasus, Nazgul, and Black Winters.

    • @mkenny17
      @mkenny17 8 років тому

      i can't really explain it but, i really want a blues or rock'n roll type of solo but also drop tuning metal riff on a dirty amp.

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 років тому +4

      For blues or rock, it is perfect. The low end isn't as tight as something like the 59 or Custom though, but the low end on something like early Sabbath wasn't tight either.

    They fit the hss configuration of a guitar fender stratocaster delux hss?

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  7 років тому

      This depends if you have a humbucker route for the neck in your guitar. To know, you have to remove the pickguard and look underneath. If it has a big square, rather than a narrow oval, then the neck pickup will fit (with a new pickguard). The bridge pickup should fit just fine.
