I have pictures of officers who were sliced pretty deep during an encounter, not realizing they were cut and bleeding. They still managed to cuff and arrest the perp. They were badly hurt but did not shut down until the adrenaline wore off. While they were scarred, they were able to make full recoveries.
I was stabbed in the upper back (only about an inch or so deep) in an altercation in my late teens. All it did was piss me right off. Adrenaline dump is a thing. Hurt afterwards and I bled a lot, but at the time it wasn't enough to stop me at all. At the time it felt kinda like i'd been jabbed with a stick or a pencil. I also had a Vietnamese immigrant friend who had machete cut scars all over his body especially his arms, his fight stories were insane ... I think with a knife it would take deep stabs to stop someone cold. Slashing type attacks aren't enough.
You made a very good analogy with the Roman legionaries. Yes, there is a very good reason they swapped their spears and slashing swords with the relatively short but wide and straight Gladius, taken from the Hispanic tribes. 1- Protect yourself, open way and push with your large shield using your low center of gravity. 2- Use your short and maneagable sword to stab and stab and stab. Over and over, from below and from the side. It doesn't matter if you have to stab 50 times in order to sort of bruise your oponent. As long as you make him bleed you have the advantage. And even if he can still fight but falthers for a moment, your companion by your side can exploit that moment and stab him from an angle. The gladius was so focused on stabbing that it even had a heavy counter-weight under the handgrip (pommel), so the sword was always balanced and straight in the hand in order to not tire the wrist and to facilitate the motion of thrusting forward.
Big wide, Diamond or triangular Blades are Known to cause more shock to the Body, look at the trend these days where length restrictions on Blades are meaningless, a 3inch heavy wide Blase 2inches plus can cause more effective damage and shock, and make Blood pressure drop sharply.
The HEMA group ACTA-ARCHEO from France did a reconstruction project on Gladiatorial and Legionaire combat based on archeological finds. In it they found evidence of wounds delivered in specific places. Basically they had understanding of the concept of timers and switches. Never underestimate your opponent and the potential for a threatening counter response. I was shot in the chest during an attempted holdup 50 years ago in LA. I put my fists up and the assailant just pulled out a gun and shot me before running off. The bullet entered right below the heart, passed through the liver and ended up in my right kidney. I turned when I saw the gun but that didn't save me. I heard a loud bang but never felt a thing. I looked down and saw a red dot on my chest. I then calmly went to my car and drove to Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital and put my things away before walking up to the emergency entrance. If I had had a weapon I could have inflicted as much damage on my opponent as if I had never taken a bullet. It's not over until it's over. By the way, I also learned to carry a throw-away wallet with an expired license, expired credit cards, and a few bucks. If someone gets the drop on me - I will throw them the phony wallet and send them on their way. The most important lesson for me? Situational awareness. Avoid places (and people) where you are likely to run into problems.
Damn. What a story. Lots of learning moments here. Your closing comments. Awareness and avoidance. Those are the words of wisdom some seem to skip over in their zeal to engage. Pride. Its gets us every time.
Nice if you can these days, you never know when or where, I grew up with situational awareness, as Bigger kids would just haul off and kick the shit out of you because they were in a bad mood. when I was in my late Teens I had to go to a Polytechnic on the edge of a Black Area, No Choice, they Hated us, lots of trouble there then, in Southeast London, UK in the 1970s. I had to commute by MotorBike as I couldn't afford anything else. A gang of at least 5 armed Black Guys would be on that corner, every night I had 4 evening classes until 9:30 to 10:00pm, and the street lights were all busted out. If your Bike didn't start first Kick from cold, every time, you were hit in the head with something that would get through the crash helmet and left, your Bike was gone. The Cops as we were mainly white working-class Kids couldn't care less, not putting their Tea and Biscuits done for us, and yes one Guy was Killed there, but Race relations were High and ended with a major riot a couple years after I was out of that one. Better to at least know how to play the Game, after all, it's never stopped in all of Human History, and I doubt it ever will.
True; I got cut couple a times by knife attachers and it did not stop me. On the left arm once; just like the instructor demonstrated. That particular guy that got me on my arm I took out. The times I was attacked with knives the assailant get in real close; then pull the knife out of hiding real fast and stabs or cut. When you see the blade coming it is almost too late or it is too late. So you get cut. There is very little time to no time to defend yourself. Try to keep a safe distance at all times.
Tim . While a knife duel is pretty rare I would say a machete duel or brawl with multiple attackers is a lot more common especially in the third world . Also I would say a fast snap cut to the face with a 7 inch knife or big Bowie would bean instant fight stopper or again hitting the hand could take fingers or the hand itself clean off . Cold steel videos have great clips on what each size knife or sword could do to the body and things like kukri pound for pound are incredible decapitation weapons . I’d have to say that targeting is incredibly necessary on smaller blades but with the big ones , I’m sure lopping off body parts would be a fight stopper . Was also taking with Paul Cale Aussie commando and founder of Kenetic fighting for the current Anzac forces and they found in Afghanistan especially during house clearing they had to Gio to entrenchment tools like shovels rather than knives if it came to cqb because the Afghan clothes acted like a gambeson and took all the piercing punch out of their knives or bayonettes .
@@Motorsportsinjapan there’s a great clip of a guy with a machete attacking people and scraping it along the ground which is pretty common and don’t know why ??? But this copper just goes in like John wick , flips him over his shoulder takes the machete and arrests him like it’s just another daily routine . Amazing
I remember watching a video once of 2 guys in Tibek painter suits with the giant dot paint pens having a mock knife fight and the fact that EVERYONE got stabbed multiple times really illiterates the fact if you don't kill that SoB or get control of their weapon BOTH parties will be injured and may not actually live long after the fight in a worst case.
Instructor in the video is a guy named Paul Vunak and he trained with Dan Inosanto. Many of those techniques are based on Filipino martial arts and usually there is a follow-up. And I could almost guarantee that a sharp-edged weapon in the hands of some of those practitioners would take someone down very quickly! I see your point in the video and it is a good one plus you have to take into account what someone is wearing, heavy clothing or something that would make the knife almost useless. Personally I think one of the scariest techniques is what is called the sewing machine technique which is used by a lot of guys in prison with shanks. I think that would be extremely hard to defend against! Thanks for the video!
I understand the point you're making, and there are plenty of videos of people being shot, and continuing to function, because they're on drugs, alcohol, or just crazed, adrenaline driven. Now, for me, having seen that entire video presentation, I know the weapon was holstered, not because he thought it was over, but because he was finished with the particular point he was making. The concept is that there are blades out there that can cut deep enough to stop function, and you did point that out. Although you say you're not trying to put down any instructor, what you point out, especially when you say his statement of what will happen within certain seconds of time is, "...all over the place...", it diminishes his credibility, even if you say that isn't your intent. Cold Steel Knives uses similar video, slashing meat, to show tge sharpness of of their knives, and how deeply they can cut, sometimes even through bone, which has the potential to be debilitating, or inhibit arm/leg function. I believe ANY critically thinking person can find problems with how things are done/applied in the real world. Chaos IS unpredictable, and nothing/no one always gets it right. Vunak is also an advocate of, "Headbutts, knees, and elbows..." as fight finishers, but, as you point out with your trauma from sports injury, the last thing I want is a concussion from using a headbutt, regardless of the angle. Just food for thought....
You two Gen Z weenies nowadays don't understand the point. You fight as you train. If you depend on that sport crap then you'll get a surprise you're not used to and it could be your demise or if it's like what happened here, the other guy didn't go out as soon as those stabs got him. Tim also knows who Vunak is since Tim has been around since the late 80s and were the ones who were reality based before reality based was coined. Tim and his partners were also around when your moms were single and hoeing it at clubs and bars before meeting your daddy so yeah, I'm sure he knows who Paul Vunak is and he's alright in some of his stuff or maybe like 30% of his stuff.
I really don't know what to make of Vunak. He is/was undoubtedly highly skilled in kali/FMA's, which have indisputably been used effectively in countless real life fights to the death (particularly in the Philippines). And he apparently taught navy seals, which obviously gives him alot of credibility. And there are videos of him demonstrating headbutts and other techniques that look devastatingly effective. But there are also plenty of videos of him demonstrating hand "strikes" that just look like a bad joke. And he's very into headbutts - and while headbutts can undoubtedly be very effective when done correctly, I just think that using your skull - which is only inches away from your face - as a striking weapon is just a really bad idea, because in the chaos of a real fight you could easily strike their skull with your nose or eye socket or cheekbone. Plus using your brain box as a striking weapon will definitely cause some degree of brain damage.
And for the next video, no such thing as knife defense because action beats reaction and you cannot read the assailments mind to look up in the rolodex which specific defense to use. Thank you for considering this subject for a future video
Pure gold video , Tim puts his mouth where his money is. Urge all to get Tim's Weapons DVD Series , it has Toren Hill & Chris explain and demo it really well so you have tools in the rare black swan event as shown in this video.
Outstanding rebuttal of Sifu/Sigung Vunak's knife wound theory! I myself was slashed twice on the fingers and once on the neck before and unless you meditate on the blood loss, a slash will not stop you. A slash did not stop me with those 3 wounds. Every Murder or Aggravated Assault I have seen where the victim was incapacitated or killed, the Assailant "shanked" the dude by Surprise until he bled out or he damaged a major organ with the knife, usually the stomach. Being cut might stop a "Normal" individual, but not a "Seasoned" Criminal with the Intent to Kill, especially if he or she has been cut before. Adrenaline can be an amazing thing Larkin patrons!
Haven't found that, but I think it depends on your life experience and upbringing, I grew up in a rough area where you were used to violence, and I raced Motorcycles, so I would often suffer injuries and and snap parts back into place, ice them and race that afternoon and the next day, plus being a Field Engineer for a large Company, it was always a little rough and tumble. I've seen old road racers head out to the line with horrendous wounds and injuries, and others just pass out as soon as the shock and adrenaline wore off. That's why the self Defence laws here in Canada and in the UK and Europe are so stupid, only sufficient and equal force, I'm crippled I can't run away, these days that's a magnet to attackers. To me, I'm breaking shit until you stop moving, I doubt if the cops if they catch me will see it the same, I know what's happening to me at my age, for resisting and the Cops where I live are guaranteed an Hour away, such Bullshit.
Its really a case by case situation regarding what will happen because there are so many variants - the attacker, the weapon, the defender, environment, 3rd parties etc etc. but I get where Tim is coming from and I agree with his argument that there are no certain outcomes in a real fight armed or unarmed......
That knife demo is a good illustration of how information quality can degrade when passed from person to person. And get totally mangled and made pretty much useless when taken from one culture and context in the Phillipines and placed in a totally different one in the USA.
Hard2hurt said one time that "you can't use a knife in self defense." I always liked how he clowned around, and he is kinda "fun." I get that you might get charged after, but his statement always irked me.
Hard2hurt is a retired LEO, so is looking at it from the legal perspective, where using a knife in self-defense is illegal unless you are justified to use lethal force. If you cant legally kill your attacker, pulling a knife will put you in jail
I think it’s about proper context, he’s talking about weapon to weapon not weapon to empty hands and when he said “the fight is over”, he meant the ability to use the weapon effectively is neutralized because the slice would be to the hand preferably so it would stop working properly and it would be easy to kill your adversary. He also taught cut at wrist-2min, elbow-30sec and carotid artery-20sec to bleed out depending on size and weight so it’s about proper context.🙏🏾
Not anymore, not for a long time. I live next to what was voted the best place in Canada to live, a Condo's overlooking the harbour for 2.5 million + Since Christmas this year 2 old ladies stabbed in the High St in Broad daylight, and lots of assaults. People there aren't used to this and don't have the First clue about dealing with it.
Duels are pretty common I have 50 videos duel playlist on my page these are the only the ones that UA-cam allows! Most UA-cam censors. Happens in bars all the time working as a bouncer I’ve seen two or more ppl will use all sorts of things pool sticks bottles knives etc. to think you don’t need to train weapon against weapon is a just a way to mentally justify not training another skill.
Anyone who does bowhunting knows; when an arrow with a three bladed razor sharp broadhead hits one side of an animals ribcage, passes through its lungs or/and heart, and exits out the other side of its ribcage, the animal will almost always take off running for 50 to 100 metres, sometimes more, before shock sets in and it collapses, then bleeds out and dies. And that you always wait 5 minutes minimum before starting to follow the bloodtrail, because if the animal can hear you chasing it, it will keep running until it dies of blood loss. Also; I remember hearing a story years ago (and no, I don't have any proof it's true, but I also see no reason to think it isn't) of a world war two pilot whose plane was shot down, who took multiple bullets - including having his JAW BLOWN OFF - who was still able to save his crewmembers lives by taking the plane down in a controlled landing instead of crashing. Adrenaline and survival instinct should not be underestimated.
Hey Tim, fantastic idea. Compound issues. 1. LEGALITIES 2. Consequences 3. MODES OF ATTACK. That’s PAUL VUNAK. One of our pioneers. A leader in JKD. One of my coaches. Not personally. But we have no choice but to think about this issue in a healthy way. Paul was giving us the skinny on what CAN HAPPEN worst case scenario. You are right though. 1 stab or slash and he isn’t necessarily done for. That said. I do all empty hand stuff. More likely to need. Better results. Easier mode. Legalities. I stay away from weapons altogether. It’s all fun and games until we wake up in SILVER BRACELETS. 😛🤙🏿☮️☺️👍spend all our time training knife and gun utilization, only to use 1 in real life combat. Unwanted combat, in which we are lawfully and dutifully bound to do something about, and now we are met with an indictment. Scary. Self defense 101. Watch guys like TIM that won’t sell you out. 💯
According the Tacticus, it only takes a 2 inch puncture wound to be fatal. The rest of those 22 inches are just for reach. The same result can be achieved with smaller knives.
Check out my website and check out all the free info I post. This YT channel is to highlight the concepts of violence and interview subject matter experts not promote TFT like some infomercial. My goal is to get you to think about your self defense arsenal... of course it would be great if my training is part of your arsenal but I'm the first to say I don't have all the answers.
First of all. I think your taking Paul Vunaks clip out of context. So there is that. Than secondly cutting and stabbing are differnt wounds. In Pauls Video.. Which I personally owned back in the day. I believe Paul had a Proto type Emerson fixed blade. And OMG.. did you see how fast and deep those cuts where on the slab of meet. ? Holy fuck.. That knife got me interested in becoming a knife designer . And Pauls knife craft was/still some of the best shit out there. He is still training. So getting back to it..If that knife hits your arm without armour, with the same speed..It's going right through skin and flesh and tendons , right down to the bone. Think your going to grab with you hand if your tendons are severed. ? Saying that, the incident you showed wasnt with a Combat knife length blade with a zero ground edge. It looked like the guy had a small 3-4 folder. And while you can debate that even after the attack the victim managed to get up and chase him. To my eye.. it looked like he was mostly stabbing to the guys arms in the beginning and only when that didnt stop the guy, and the guys continued to grab , only than did he plant some body blows with the knife. And even after all that, the other guy still got up and ran after the guy with the knife. Talk about rage and adrenaline. Now why do you think the guy with the knife was running ? To me he looked sacred. And given his skill and tool, I would would have ran too. And while you never addressed the issue. I think that fact goes a long way to that stabbing being done in self defence. Now consider, I dont know the case and have not seen the forensics. But from what Iv seen, a case could be made of self defence. To me this is a good example of what street violence and if we look closely and examine it for what it really is. We can lean from it. It would be interesting to know what happened to the man who got stabbed, to the man doing the stabbing. Why there where fighting and what they both think about it now. That is if the guy who was stabbed survived.
If it was a true knife fighter. He would have closed with zeroing techniques. The heart shot ,blue worm and decap were wide open . That was an old school defang the snake mentality that got alot of people killed or badly injured . Your objective is to disarm against an opponent committed to killing you . If that's you? you are in trouble before you draw your blade . Once the blade is presented you have to be willing to kill to save your life or don't carry a blade .if you are conflicted the opponent will take your weapon and kill you with it . Espescially for giving them girlie scratches on their forearm .
Honest question. Where is your pressure testing? This is the number one question, as if you do not have pressure testing in your curriculum then what you teach is not effective. I respect you Tim i think you are a man of integrity but i do question your methods, and i think your good intentions do not align with your methodologies. I would like to see clear evidence of TFT working in a real world context. I see Bjj working in a real world context all the time over youtube ect. Evidence please
Do you want to see evidence? Valentin Trostianchuk, it follows the same principles of TFT. And if you don't think that's enough, then you need to go to the streets and find out for yourself. I think you're still in the mentality of brawling or dueling with someone in the streets, and that's not what self-defense for the average person is. Even someone who has done karate and used it effectively in the streets will tell you that this method is what is used. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. What works is surprise, the simplest stuff and knowing where to hit. P.S. personal experience. The first time I saw something like this work, was when I was 12 years old. My jujutsu/ judo instructor, with years of experience fighting in tournaments and competitions. While waiting in line at the movie theater, took out a guy who cut in line in front of us, with a simple groin kick. When we left the movie theater, the guy was still in the floor groaning in pain.
@@tatumergo3931 Ive been in fights in the streets and what kicked in was Boxing and BJJ under pressure, not my wing-chun or anything else i learned. It taught me that what kicks in under pressure is what you have trained under pressure nothing else. I think Tim is awesome i am actually a huge fan and i can see the value in TFT with the body weight and focus on hitting targets, and i get its hard to train hitting vitals without injuring someone or worse by accident. Im not thinking of duelling, i just think the principle of pressure testing applies for both sport or real world, the challenge with real world is how close you can get to the real thing right. Ill check out Valentin thanks !!
Hi Tim, I've been attacked on two separate occasions, by edged weapons, I couldn't tell you exactly what they were, I never saw them, either time. The first time my thumb was amputated, all but a piece of skin on the back of my hand which kept my thumb on my right hand. This was in the UK, and I was serving my engineering apprenticeship out, 6 years of School and work. I'd been asked, by my Boss to come along to the conference, meet some people who I may be working with in the future, and keep the Food and Beer flowing, this was a private event in a hired conference hall, so nobody should have been in there. That said, this one Guy was sitting at the end of the Bar, about mid-'30s to early '40s, I was a kid 17 or 18, He'd been bugging me and the others, all night for free stuff, I kept telling him it wasn't going to happen, I was getting annoyed. I finally said something to piss him off. and He came at me, with what I thought was a punch to the head, I had a fair amount of Judo and old-style Karate experience 1970s, so I blocked it and threw him hard over my shoulder. I had always been taught to retain control of the Hand, and I hadn't felt a thing, luckily I had both hands on him when he hit the floor, and that's when I saw all the blood squirting between my hands and his wrist, still couldn't feel anything, I pulled his arm up and delivered a swift Kick, knocking him out, it was at this point that someone grabbed me and wrapped my hand in a towel and held it in the air, by the time I got to the Hospital I'd bleed out. I never did see what he had, but it was intended for my face, but my thumb got in the way. I ended up with 6weeks off work, and 6 months of physio, plus a six-inch scar on my right thumb and wrist from the first reattachment surgery, I can supply a photo to prove this. I suspect it was a Cut-throat razor, a popular weapon back then, I have no clue who He was the Cops were there when I was put in the ambulance, and he disappeared, so lucky I think that no retribution followed. The second time was in a Bar, after I had returned to Canada, as I grew up with my Gran in the UK my accent wasn't too popular at that time, Trudeau Snr had caused a bad recession in Canada in 1980 and people losing everything! So I dropped into this Bar to see if the waitress who was there the previous Saturday night, was working this Monday after class. She wasn't and a nasty comment followed from the 3 Guys at the Bar, it was a dive Bar, so I told the Barman I was leaving and rushed to finish the beer, they beat me to it and I half expected them to be waiting on me at the top, they were. I still cannot remember what it was, but it sliced clean through a leather coat, thick cardigan and a couple of long sleeved T-shirts and left a deep 2.5inch slash in my arm, followed by a cut to my face and a stab wound in my chest shoulder area. I got in a good front kick under the Solar plexus, He let out a strange sound and I ran for my car, it wasn't until I got home that I saw what He'd done. I superglued the wounds, no way I was going to the Hospital, I didn't know the effect of the Kick. That's my experience so far with edged weapons, I would have said it was over as I live in what was a lovely area but Trudeau decided to move into some Homeless/drug camps, and now approaching my 70s, with a disability I've been attacked 3 or 4 times in the past two years, so as we made the news this year for this very reason I expect it's only a matter of time. I legally walk with a Heavy oak short staff, edged for two reasons, the sharp egg shape, assists me in getting back up when I fall, with arthritis in both hands, a Broken back still in two pieces, and nerve damage to my entire left side now, and two you can guess. The attached sling takes over 30% of my weight and I've had it approved by the Cops at both police stations. They're trying to steal my Bloody Great Dogs, which is a worry I know they are armed and I don't want them hurt, I can usually see at least 3, so probably 4, one time they rushed back to their Van and drove it at me and my old Dog, we just managed to dive in before they hit the car door, frustrated at the outcome of the confrontation. I'm supposed to call the Cops and wait?
*_Do we not need our rights to lawfully carry and use Arms to be taken back in the UK? As didn't we give them up by consent on the promises that the government would protect us? They ain't protecting us_*

Was also taking with Paul Cale Aussie commando and founder of Kenetic
fighting for the current Anzac forces and they found in Afghanistan especially during house clearing they had to Gio to entrenchment tools like shovels rather than knives if it came to cqb because the Afghan clothes acted like a gambeson and took all the piercing punch out of their knives or bayonettes .
Yes, machete fights in Vietnam. Laos etc and parts of Africa are very common. Scary stuff.
@@Motorsportsinjapan there’s a great clip of a guy with a machete attacking people and scraping it along the ground which is pretty common and don’t know why ??? But this copper just goes in like John wick , flips him over his shoulder takes the machete and arrests him like it’s just another daily routine . Amazing
@@pendragonfilm You are describing a clip from a film. Either The Raid or The Raid 2.

Training that's all that matters, attitude and aptitude.
Working security and as a bouncer/doorman, I seen people stab on the side living to tell about it.
Remember Michael Jackson will referee all of your knife fights if you BEAT IT.
Great and logical breakdown.
Information is always key. Thanks again Tim!
You bet!
It's alarming to see how quickly the body can go into shock after a knife wound.
It will always be about who gets the drop first, and how effective it will be! Never leave yourself open for second chances!
That knife demo is a good illustration of how information quality can degrade when passed from person to person. And get totally mangled and made pretty much useless when taken from one culture and context in the Phillipines and placed in a totally different one in the USA.
I still have your training videos from the 90’s.
If you cant legally kill your attacker, pulling a knife will put you in jail
great information
I think it’s about proper context, he’s talking about weapon to weapon not weapon to empty hands and when he said “the fight is over”, he meant the ability to use the weapon effectively is neutralized because the slice would be to the hand preferably so it would stop working properly and it would be easy to kill your adversary. He also taught cut at wrist-2min, elbow-30sec and carotid artery-20sec to bleed out depending on size and weight so it’s about proper context.🙏🏾
So technically timers and switches....
Any online knife defense videos or training available? This was very informative
I am interested in these.
I shudder when I think about it.
Just like in real estate and GSW's, it's all about location, location, location.
That "side" of beef was a leg of pork
“Westside Story” lol not sure most these young bucks know the reference Tim 😂
Our planet can be a powerful tool if we know how to use it.
Ed Calderon is another good resource.
Tim’s the GOAT

The Gladius had a two foot blade. Not relevant for smaller knives that are easy to carry.
According the Tacticus, it only takes a 2 inch puncture wound to be fatal. The rest of those 22 inches are just for reach. The same result can be achieved with smaller knives.
Tim, when are you ACTUALLY gonna show what TO DO based on your system? That'd be nice..
Hopefully the knife attacker in LA was caught
The human body is tough and keeps going under stress. So be ready and have a plan B if the fucker doesn’t stop. I
Yep,need to know how to access arteries.
TTK and THE, IYKYK.
!!!!
Thats a great idea for a future video. Appreciate you taking the time to post.
Ill check out Valentin thanks !!

i think pookie died as a result of the stabbing. Jimmy Hoffa said if a guy pulls a knife you run away, if he pulls a gun you charge him.
They ain't protecting us_*
Paul Vunak. Pretty sure he didnt have any real world experience cutting or stabbing anybody. Stabbing is the way to go! Great vid Tim!
Vunak's approach is to keep distance and disarm the opponent to slashing at their weapon hand, once disarmed you have the option to enter to stab
How many people realistically do? Not many.
