I think BJJ is a lot of fun. It's a great way to exercise and compete without getting punch in the face. That appeals to a lot of people, myself included.
Of course Silat doesn't punch much to the face. They prefer body shots say a shovel hook to the lower ribs, extended knuckle strikes to the throat etc. Kill shots in other words and they work well against boxing which has devolved from it's effective bare knuckle days to todays glove in face. Man, even Tyson broke his hand hitting someone's head in a street fight. In the ring they wrap their hands before even putting on their gloves. Said gloves "enlarge" the hands so much you can block punches in a way that would be useless without gloves in the street!
Its not that it isn't fun its that it isn't applicable to self-defense. BJJ will get you killed in the street. Sure if you want to use BJJ to lose weight and make friends, that's fine. But if you go to the ground in a street fight, you're going to have a bunch of dudes kick you in the head or worse. The philosophy that every fight goes to the ground might be true but the fights START with both combatants standing. The dojo/training gym is not the same place as the streets. The dojo has rules and is run by civilized well meaning people. The streets are full of savages that will kill you for the last $5 in your pocket. For that SIMPLE reason, I would ask anyone that trains in BJJ to take a look at boxing, karate, or traditional Ju-Jitsu. Round out your ground game and your grappling with locks, strikes, and throws like a real martial artist so you can be prepared when you step out your front door. The mindset of the martial artist is the mindset of the warrior. Always armed and prepared for combat but not seeking conflict. Remember that martial arts are first and foremost arts of war. They are there to maim and kill your opponent. Even the Marines get some training in jujitsu's powerful wrist and arm locks that can be pulled off from a standing position. Why don't the Marines learn BJJ?

God, I love martial arts.
Great video. I believe that if more martial artists, and especially karateka, would simply engage in friendly, safe sparring with minimal rules where practitioners are free to spar at all ranges (stand up, clinch, and ground), we would see far more mutual respect and far fewer petty arguments about if or why a certain style is effective. A lot of the small points that people argue about are found to be rather insignificant when people actually just spar (friendly and safe, not a fight) and don't artificially dictate at what ranges the engagement occurs.
classic example of an incomplete grappler, sit to guard and play footsie, it might win him comps but when it comes to it its a highly ineffective style for fighting
Idk when that turned into BJJ. The top principle of BJJ is position before submission. Guard is supposed to be an option, but not a plan. BJJ has changed
@@joshbeambjjlol i appreciate the humility. I’m not familiar with your channel, but it appears you do not have wrestling experience is this correct? I bet if you did 6-12 months of wrestling classes once or twice a week this experience would’ve been totally different! You would’ve taken him down way easier size disadvantage or no. Just go slow with it though. I am a BJJ coach and I wrestled in high school. When guys come in fresh from HS wrestling the intensity is just too high for me. I’d have to build back up to wrestling condition but I can still take them down, and most importantly hold them there the rest of the round. I would also assume Jesse’s TDD is decent because of his brother shooting on him.
Huge respect to Josh. I’m thinking he probably took some stick from BJJ colleagues, but he is super humble and this is a huge part of martial arts. Great fun video by two great guys. More power to you.
This was a great interaction, conversation, and video. I hope that you both decide to do more videos together when you get the opportunity. Very best to you both!
I’ve been doing bjj for three years now, I watched the ultimate self defense championship with my coach and we had a discussion luckily my coach doesn’t engage in propaganda. His exact words were “for street self defense a good 1,2 and high cover and some basic Greco wrestling are all you’ll ever need”
Not enough for street defense. You have to deal with low kicks, joint breaks, mauling, leg takedowns (Greco wrestling doesn't teach them). cupped palm strikes to ears etc. There is a reason said tactics are part of military hand to hand combat!
@@robertmallory1877 Does the common guy on the streets do low kicks, joint breaks, mauling, or leg takedowns? Usually, when the extent of their martial arts knowledge is that they know they should make a fist, they usually only haymakers. Though I've seen bigger guys do powerbombs when they have the opportunity to.
Dude! Jesse is an amazing collaborator. And you did well Josh! I enjoyed that you went with each other's ideas and welcoming each other and making each other laugh. I laughed. Great job guys 😁
Jesse is so humble yet very talented. He has a quest for knowledge and a desire to share, he epitomises the role of sensei . Oss jesse san, arigatou gozaimasu.
I like the "mountain" description at the end. I like to think that mostly (if not all) martial arts are situational. In a real fight I don't think a SINGLE martial art would be the most effective. Throwing powerful kicks might be good if you manage to keep some distance but what happens if you get knocked down? Maybe a punch to the head or a kick in the leg might knock your balance off, then what do you do next? This is the part where I think BJJ would be most useful... or maybe if you're trying to avoid a direct fight you might do some acrobatics and use some capoeira moves. Idk man, I feel like every martial art is both useful and useless at the same time. It all depends on the situation (place, time, weather, size of opponent etc)
Awesome video as usual… every style has its place and every place has its own style so awesome that you guys can see either side of the coin for your systems and styles and ways of fighting. Been a stand-up striker my 37 years in Martial Arts BJ does have its place along with Karate taekwondo and all the other stand-up styles of striking Okinawa will always be the birthplace of Karate as I am A isshyinryu stylist now and so awesome that you bring up the fact that there’s a sport and a traditional style and we have to recognize the difference between the both keep putting out the awesome videos. Thank you sensei Jessie
Encamp went to the Gracie's in California and learned that Gracie jujitsu is still self defense based and focuses on defending against strikes. It's part of core curriculum and they often put on gloves during rolls to remind practitioners that one always must be aware of strikes.
First spar round and we see the common trait of BJJ practitioners: A bunch of excuses. Good video though, and I'm happy to see you post it despite the ups and downs.
The second round, where he states: “I guess the result of this one is inconclusive”, that’s disingenuous. He’d been punched in the face many, many times at this point. In a real fight, with no gloves, and real striking intent, his face would have been turned into pulp by this point.
I was #1 ranked M1 blue belt in the world in IBJJF in both feather and lightweight for 2023-2024 with over 70 tournaments in 2 years, including 2nd at Master Worlds, and multiple first place wins at the Master International tournaments in Europe and North America. Most recently in 2024, I was lightweight winner at the IBJJF Asia Championship in Japan. I was promoted a few months ago to purple belt by Greg Sirico of Odyssey Jiu Jitsu and also just recently won IBJJF Sacramento at purple belt middleweight.
but can’t take down a karateka? What does blue belt mean to you? To the old heads and some new masters blue means your BJJ vs non BJJ will win in the most safe and efficient way possible. No disrespect Josh you’d roll me like sushi but dude you got seriously handled in the first 2 rounds.
A couple takeaways for me: 1. Jesse is pretty damn good! His striking is great. He's definitely not your average karate guy. 2. When are we going to admit he's also a BJJ guy? He may not quite be blue belt level, but he's definitely high white belt level. Enough to beat a trial class guy for sure. And he's officially competed and won. 3. A big reason BJJ doesn't seem as dominant today has nothing to do with its effectiveness or "it's becoming too sport focused." It's that almost everyone that trains now knows exactly what to expect and how to defend against a lot of it. 4. Also, other arts have learned another important lesson from the early days of NHB, and that is that in order to be a good fighter you have to train like a fighter (not a martial artist). What I mean is, training conditioning, "alive" drilling, lots of sparring, and at least occasional competition (even for the hobbyist). Jesse clearly does all that in addition to his more traditional training. He also crosstrains a bunch. 5. But if you don't do any of that and think you'll "just stand up" or easily knock someone out before they can clinch, 90% of the time that fight will still go exactly like one of the old Gracie challenge fights. 😏
There is no perfect martial art. An open mind and mutual respect for all true martial arts is what I think is the core of a true martial art practioner. Thanks for a great video and greetings from Sweden!
Really interesting to here about the Okinawan-Chinese connection towards ground fighting as nowadays most Chinese ground fighting martial arts point only to "dog style". I love the way you're "not using jiu jitsu" in the fourth match =D
Seriously though, awesome vid - two great creators coming together!
Hahaha I cheated… 😂
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Jesse is such a gifted and natural grappler, why he hate on groundfighting so much? One of us! One of us!
This was really wholesome tbh. Good content!
Both you guys did amazing at demonstrating styles and love both ya content bros! :)
I actually agree with this 100% lol
Idk when that turned into BJJ. The top principle of BJJ is position before submission. Guard is supposed to be an option, but not a plan. BJJ has changed
@@mikea7732competition optimization vs fighting optimization
but hes not incomplete
It’s a very wholesome and overall positive video!
First round feels like a boss fight
Huge respect to Josh. I’m thinking he probably took some stick from BJJ colleagues, but he is super humble and this is a huge part of martial arts.
Great fun video by two great guys. More power to you.
"But you do BJJ???"
Fantastic video
I love the chemistry between these two. By the third sparring session they looked like they were having a blast together. Good content.
This video was amazing, I watched from start to finish!
Brilliant video. I really liked this as it illustrated Jesse with great humour and appreciation. Wonderful ❤
I see you're already employing your training with Jesse in your titles. xD Great vid. Jesse is such a humble Chad.
Thank you Both... Looks like this was educational and fun... (it was for me) You both are Great!
Dude! Jesse is an amazing collaborator. And you did well Josh! I enjoyed that you went with each other's ideas and welcoming each other and making each other laugh. I laughed. Great job guys 😁
Very nice video, thank you two for that!
8:00 if we are talking whats real, he got so many hits already at that time, so there is no fight and submission on the ground.
Exactly
Great collaboration guys. Thank you
Jesse is so humble yet very talented. He has a quest for knowledge and a desire to share, he epitomises the role of sensei . Oss jesse san, arigatou gozaimasu.
That "What the fuck" killed me lmao
Time stamp
That was awesome. I’m team Jitsu but this was fun to watch. Nice job sir.
It’s great to see martial artist from different styles interact and get along so well and complement each other
“Human Being not Human Doing. You can always switch up what you do. You are not what you do.”
Perfectly said
yeah this was the first time I'd heard it said like this, love it!
@@joshbeambjj thanks for this! Keep up the good work!
This was a fun video to watch. Looks like you guys had fun doing it!
Clever. Fell for the click-bait title and loved it.
Great video! Karate and bjj, i'd say thats a good combination 😊
Man, what a GOOD video, so well made. Keep it up!
Encamp went to the Gracie's in California and learned that Gracie jujitsu is still self defense based and focuses on defending against strikes.
It's part of core curriculum and they often put on gloves during rolls to remind practitioners that one always must be aware of strikes.
You only have to roll with a white belt to know you have to watch out for strikes.
I want to see a Gracie Jiu Jitsu purple belt go against karate guy
First spar round and we see the common trait of BJJ practitioners: A bunch of excuses. Good video though, and I'm happy to see you post it despite the ups and downs.
I think one thing this video does prove is if you actually practice it and actually spar karate is underrated. Good video.
Great video. You and Jesse made it fun, funny, and informative.
The second round, where he states: “I guess the result of this one is inconclusive”, that’s disingenuous. He’d been punched in the face many, many times at this point. In a real fight, with no gloves, and real striking intent, his face would have been turned into pulp by this point.
man this was fun! almost everything can be useful its how you use what you know.
Brotha who give this guy purple belt
This is a legit question, indeed
This is a legit question, indeed 👍
@@marco10832I guess he has the rare humility of a trained fighter. Whereas you are more like a social media (insert particular martial arts here) guy
Very cool. Nice of Jesse to amp up the viewer's and make it an involved journey for all. Enjoyed the Mountain explanation and philosophy.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
It's good to see a humble bjj guy and him not being cultish🎉🎉🎉
Great discussion at the end! This was awesome.
Two really awsome people!
A couple takeaways for me:
Oliver, get your shoes off the mat!
Love the Ace of Base song....lol...Excellent video Josh. Good stuff!!
People who aren't familiar with him don't realize that Jesse legit can fight. Dude has done all types of competitions
Legit Jessie could probably jack up someone
very cool colab. i really like content creators that team up, and this is informative and playful at the same time. nice job guys
Thanks for watching!
Why you don't visit the Valente brothers or Rorion Gracie ? they get a jiu-jitsu focused in self defense.
Could be mistaken but did Jesse refer to this Chinese ground fighting style as ShíShù (or ShíJitsu) [ 实术 ]? I'd be really interested in knowing more as I'm trying to investigate on Chinese ground fighting!
@KARATEbyJesse
I think it was shown in one of his specials Karate Nerd in China, possibly under the name Fuzhou, dog boxing
Pretty sure he said it in Japanese as "chijutsu" 「ちじゅつ」「地術」which would be "dìshù" in Mandarin or literally "Ground Techniques" in English.
