  • In this video, I’ll walk you through the Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 all-in-one cable replacement process.
    Parts & tools needed: 👉 All-in-One Cable Replacement for Apple Thunderbolt Display 27"
    A1407 (Mid 2011) amzn.to/3F1xxm5 or amzn.to/3DJVWN5
    👉 12-in-1 Torx Screwdriver Set with T3 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 T10 Kit
    amzn.to/3deX9wU
    👉 6 Pack Heavy Duty Suction Cups Screen Suction Cup Tool
    amzn.to/2YTXfVh
    ✅ My Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 connects to my Macbook Pro 2018 using:
    👉 Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter amzn.to/2N9leKW
    👉 Compatible for MagSafe to USB C Adapter, USB C to MagSafe 1 & 2 Adapter for MacBook, New MacBook Air and More USB C Port Devices amzn.to/3EO7znz
    Alright, now that I’ve listed the tools you’ll need to complete this DIY, let's get into why I decided to repair my 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display in 2021. Besides the obvious, it went black and never turned on again. And wanting to save you all time and money in order to get you back to enjoying your monitor as quickly as possible.
    I want to start off with quality, let's face it, Apple using the highest quality materials available to manufacture their products. These displays are built well and they are built to last. These things are work horses and are still going strong in 2021. Folks I know who own one of these, just don't want to get rid of them, and wouldn't consider another monitor.
    Secondly, I want to address compatibility, because I have not seen another non-Apple monitor that integrates so well with MacOS operating systems. I love the fact that I can control volume and brightness levels right on my keyboard. No reaching behind the monitor or turning little knobs that are an eyesore on my workstation!
    Third, I plan on getting a second monitor in the near future, and that’s why I didn’t want to take a shortcut. Many folks use the spare Thunderbolt 2 port in the rear of the monitor as an alternative when the main Thunderbolt 2 cable goes bad. If I went that route, a second monitor would not be an option.
    Lastly, these things are just bad ass, so if your Apple A1407 is not working, why not fix it if the repair is relatively inexpensive? And in my opinion, DIY is the best route, since most PC repair shops don’t work on these types of monitors. I did find a local repair shop who specializes in Apple products, but just for them to take a look at and give me an estimate was between $65USD and $85USD. Not to mention the repair could take up to two weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    If I can fix my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 not turning on, so can you! The most difficult step of the process is really detaching and attaching the (4) cables that tie the LCD monitor to the logic board. So roll up your sleeves and good luck with your DYI repair.

      Excellent video man, my display does it sometimes. It also don't wake up at OS start up sometimes. The brightness and volume controls on the keyboard are the only 2 things holding me from not upgrading it to a new one.

    You are amazing!! I was just about to bring my beautiful Apple display to Goodwill when I ran across your video. I've never repaired a monitor but I ordered the supplies you recommended and for less than $200, I repaired my monitor with your excellent instructions. I did have to go back after I finished the first repair because it still wouldn't turn on. However, I went back through the video, opened it back up, reseated all of my connections again, and voila!...it worked. Thank you so much for your detailed video. Not only did it save me a ton of money but it saved the environment.

      @J M, thank you for watching and for posting your comments.
      Indeed, using the spare Thunderbolt port is a great work-around to this issue. The only setback to that route is you have to run a separate charging cable to your laptop (in my case), and I hate cables all over my desk. I try to minimize cables where ever possible.
      Glad to hear this option worked for you and again, thanks for sharing your experience/solution with everyone here.

      @@HumbertoAreas All of the video was helpful, but especially the part when you reconnect the last cable, with the the clip that went over it. First time, the display image did not come on. I just used your video to fix my Apple display. Thanks a mill for the tutorial. One note I would say is to be careful removing those 3 connectors from the logic board (2:15). The larger one has a clip underneath that you need to pinch and the gold one has a flap that needs to be flipped 180˚ to get it to release and they all slide out. I wasn't sure which way they disconnect and as you say our Thunderbolt Displays are now pretty old so those cables won't be as flexible as new. Great resource and thanks again. So if i have a new MacBook Pro and two of these displays with the same issue, I would use a Thunderbolt 2 (aka USB C) to Thunderbolt 1 cable? Especially since i don’t need the charging ability from the MagSafe cable (which doesn’t work with the newer macs). Then could i just dish chain from one to the other display using a Thunderbolt 1 to Thunderbolt 1 cable? Thanks. .

      @HumbertoAreas  Рік тому

      @chrismehling9968, thanks for watching my video, glad to hear you got value out of it. Since these displays are so old now, everything about them is challenging - and yes, especially that PIA cable. 😄
      Have you examined the tab that came lose with a magnifying glass? It'll be helpful to determine whether it came off, or broke off? if it broke off, there is black electrical tape that perhaps will do the trick of holding that tab in place. Similar black tape is used around the displays to hold cables in place. So perhaps we can apply the same? Either way, when moving the display, be extra careful to minimize any vibration that would make the tab/cable come lose.

    Humberto, more Cinema Display 27 no turn on info for your viewers. Just picked up another beautiful condition CD27 that would not turn on with my Mid 2011 iMac running High Sierra. Tried with a M2012 MPB 13 running Mojave and it eventually came on. Opened CD27 up to check connectors and check for fan spin, all good. Thought it might be CD27 firmware so ran the loader from Apple. Went back to the M2011 iMac and still no screen. Read in the blogs that USB in CD27 sometimes knocks out screen so tried with no USB and it came on. Plugged the USB in for brightness control and the screen went dark. Re-boot. Tried another USB port and success, CD27 comes on with brightness control.
    Damn things are finnicky. I can't tell you the exact problem and solution. My guess is the firmware update helped but not sure as the firmware was for an audio issue and not video. It might be a combination of doing all my testing that finally got the CD27 to wake up. Anyways, I am not the only CD27 owner with no turn on issue. It seems to be very common issue.

    Hi Humberto, thank you for making this video. I recently bought a used 24" LED Cinema Display for my MacPro computer but it only lasted a few days, actually less than a week. It suddenly went black and hasn't comeback since. After researching this model online I found that the Thunderbolt cable dying is a very common issue with these models. Then I found your video and was encouraged by it to challenge myself to do the repair and fix this beautiful monitor. I think it's truly worth it. The problem seems to be finding this particular cable to buy it brand new. I have found a few used ones on eBay but who knows how much life is in them, maybe they'll last another few days and then you have to start over looking for a cable and doing the repair over again. So my question to you is this, if you don't mind me asking… is it possible to find the original cable brand new, and where? Did you find a brand new cable for your monitor, or was it also a used one?

    • @HumbertoAreas
      @HumbertoAreas  Місяць тому

      @pacobelsue6661 Thanks for watching and for taking the time to post you comments and questions. Glad to hear my video encouraged you in some way to take action. As you hunt for a new cable... my first question is: What is the model number of your display?
      Sounds like you have a Cinema Display my friend, and not a Thunderbolt Display. This has a lot to do with the type of cable you're looking for. If indeed you have a Cinema Display, you need to look for a "Mini DisplayPort cable" and not a Thunderbolt cable.
      You can go to everymac.com/monitors/apple/ and verify which display you have. And to answer your question, never gamble your money on used electronic parts, always buy new when possible. I found my cable on Amazon - although I've noticed that sellers offering these cables are few now.
      Please keep me in the loop and posted on your display.

    Great walkthrough Humberto! I just found a great conditioned Thunderbolt Display sitting next to my apartment dumpster. I opened it up, and although I found a couple dead roaches at the base of monitor where the sound comes from (LOL don’t tell my wife), everything else is clean and appears never to have been opened. So I returned the used cable and ordered a brand new one instead, and now its been nearly a full week since, with the display functioning and staying on! Thanks a bunch Humberto, it's beautiful!
      I just have one problem now: I have the display hooked up to my iMac, and after it goes to sleep and I wake it up, I then lose ability to adjust the display's brightness via the system setting --> displays controls. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but still can't retain brightness adjustment controls after going to sleep. As of now, the only way to regain adjustment function is to disconnect, then reconnect the thunderbolt cable. I'm just worried continued reconnection might wear out the cable :( Any ideas???
      FYI: I'm using a 2013 27" iMac 780M GPU, on the latest Ventura OS via Open Core Legacy Patcher. The iMac on Ventura runs beautifully smooth with no hiccups anywhere else.

      @HumbertoAreas  Місяць тому

      @sandrasotoramos8293 Hello and thanks for reaching out, watching the video and taking the time to post your questions.
      You're not alone on this one... everyone has a hard time reconnecting that last cable with the tag on it. Although it is the hardest to reconnect, it is the easiest to figure out in which direction/orientation it should slide in.
      The tag and lever on that cable should face up and away from the logic board, otherwise you will not be able to fold over the tag/lever that holds it in place.
      So tu answer your question, yes, it should face the LCD displays.
      Please keep me posted on your repair and let me know which part of the video you found most helpful?

      @Sutop Sejati, thanks so much for watching and for your comments and questions. Before my monitor went dead, I heard no hissing sound. Hi Humberto.
    What a great video!!! I am certain that I could replace my cable as you describe. My A1407 Thunderbolt 27" display might have flashed off for a second the night before I realized it wouldn't wake up the next morning. The Thunderbolt cable that was connected to my mac mini looked as though it had overheated? There was shrink-wrap on the Mac mini end of the cable and it looked a bit melted and discolored. It' has been months since the monitor died, (this happened last March). I have since purchased a new (non-apple) monitor but hate to toss this monitor out simply for a faulty cable.
    I have plugged the monitor in and it gets power (I know this because I plugged in a USB external CD player and the light came on. I am fairly certain that if I install a new thunderbolt cable as you have shown in this video, I will again have a display that lights up. I would like your thoughts about this. Also, Where do I get a replacement cable? Best regards and Thank You again. Sandra Taylor

    I forget if I commented already but I wanted to share I had a successful repair of a A1316 model but it did not use the same cable. Found out the hard way. Anyway, after buying the more expensive ($100 on eBay, more elsewhere) replacement cable I followed the same general steps (one exception was the camera cable also was attached to back of display and was a little tricky to reconnect) and SUCCESS. I've just done a cable replacement on this model for a friend and can't tell if it is successful yet because I believe on this model you have to have the power connected right? I don't have that adapter yet. On the newer model it powered just from Thunderbolt (I believe USB only has to be plugged in for powering the back ports AND webcam). Thanks so much for this great video. Will update this if I'm successful with same model as in video.

      @@HumbertoAreas Hello there! My first display was the A1316 (version with no ethernet, just USB ports). That's the one where the cheapest cable I could find was $100 on Ebay. The older one I JUST got working but have more issues. What I didn't know before tackling my friends' display (model A1407) was that:
      - She was still getting picture
      - She was having horrible Fan Noise (thus she just said "It died")
      I replaced the cable just like in your video (before I knew there was this fan issue) and got no picture. I was using the same non-apple thunderbolt adapter that worked with the A1316. I had a hunch that it could be the adapter and was correct. An official Apple USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter got me picture but it now I'm left with the fan noise.
      So far I've read it could be anything from a bad fan, power supply, capacitors wearing out, that it's connected to the brightness (the brighter the display the louder the noise) but don't know enough to really diagnose. I'm just handy and can follow a great tutorial video LIKE YOURS! ;)
      If you have any suggestions, links, tips for the fan noise I'm all ears. :). If not, no worries. We may be getting my coworker a new monitor anyway. I just LOVE fixing old / good tech and not contributing to land fill whenever I can. A1316

      Last note: I found a PSU and FAN on eBay (two purchases) which seem to be likely culprits, and will try to swap those out. I saw at least one report that PSU fixed buzzing issue. Since fan was loud seemed like while I was in there it was worth repairing. Will know more in a week or so.

      @@HumbertoAreas All good. The upside is I may have inherited this monitor. UPDATE ON REPAIRS: I replaced the power supply board and the fan and it seems to be working PERFECTLY. Both replacements were easier than the cord replacement as they had very simple connections. You just had to remove the screen connections same as the cord replacement. Once everything was exposed it was just 4 screws and two power connectors for the PSU board and 3 Screws and two PCB connectors with a little tape lifting and replacing to route the fan cords back where they were. Connected it to a 13" MBP and it came to life beautifully silent. Really have enjoyed learning how to refurbish these beauties. Thanks again for your original video that started me down this path.

    Hi, thanks for the walkthrough. I also encounter this flickering issue. But why do you know that the problem comes from the cable, but not other components, such as logic board or maybe capacitors? Thanks.

    • @HumbertoAreas
      @HumbertoAreas  2 роки тому

      @Leo Nugraha, and thanks again for taking the time to post your comments and questions.
      The weakest component and most faulty ones on these displays seem to be the all-in-one cable. Since no one really services these displays, I took it upon myself to troubleshoot. And if I had to start by replacing a component, then the all-in-one cable seemed to be the most logical (and most inexpensive).
      Unless you're in an area where there are lots of lighting storms and do not have access to a power surge protector... it might be unlikely (but very possible as well) that a capacitor(s) or logic board may have shorted out.
      Capacitors and logic boards for the most part stop working all together, but the flickering you mention is a warning sign that things are right not right with the cable that bridges your display to your PC.
      These displays are great and if prolonging their life with a cable swap works, then in my opinion is worth it.
      Please keep me posted on your display and thanks again for watching.

    Hi Humberto, great video. Very well demonstrated. - I do have one question that you left out of the video (or at least I missed it)... how did you diagnose the problem to be the video cable itself. Why did you choose that to change and not the display board, etc...??? The video cable is about $65, so I would hate for anyone to think that is what is wrong with their monitor, spend the only and time and then realize the their original cable was not the problem. So, my question again is - How did you determine that the problem was the video cable itself and not something else?
    Thanks!

    • @HumbertoAreas
      @HumbertoAreas  2 роки тому +1

      @Calixto, thanks for taking the time to post your comments and questions. I truly appreciate it.
      I was really frustrated when my beautiful display stopped working. No PC repair shop would touch it, Apple itself wouldn't touch it and there was little info on websites and discussion boards on what the issue could be?
      So I decided to tackle the trouble shooting myself. And I decided to start by replacing what I thought was the most inexpensive and easiest part - and that is the All-In-One Cable that stems from the display. And I got lucky, it worked. And it has worked so so many others on here.
      if you wish you keep the display and put it to good use, it's worth a shot in my opinion. I think I put (2) links for the cables and I believe one option is cheaper.
      Good luck and please keep me posted on what you decide to do.

    Hello, before you did your repair, did the monitor show any sign of life when plugged in (any sound, fan noise, panel light etc)? The reason I ask is my A1407 Cinema Display shows no signs of life when the power cord is plugged in and was wondering if I would have to look at the power supply too. I did have an Apple tech plug a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable from the back of the monitor to his laptop to see if that would result in an image (as I read some people had this work where they then did not need to replace the full internal cord assembly), but that did not result in an image either.
    Great video by the way!

      Quick question: when Apple tech plug the display to his laptop, does the Operating System recognize the display? You can check by going to System Settings > Displays. If the display shows up there, then you may not need to worry about the power supply just yet.

    Humberto...my 27" Thunderbolt Display I am using was a "new" replacement (apple care) I received when the original "exploded" in an area of the display. Since then, I have had the power cord replaced by apple. I have been experiencing 2-3 second blackouts (monitor hooked up to my Mac Pro model late 2013) for about 12 months now, but didn't want to take my Mac Pro to apple for 2-3 weeks for diagnosis as I need to use it, but assumed it was one of the graphic cards that was a problem. TODAY, the monitor went dead, and after testing my computer on another monitor, the problem is with my Thunderbolt Display. So I just ordered the parts you listed, and will attempt repair myself. Hi, I have the display and would love to use the camera on it for FaceTime. Any idea on how I can do that ? Thank you.

      @nicolasdanjou1262, Thanks for watching and for your question. What is the Model Number of your display? And to what MAC are you trying to connect it to? When you connect the Thunderbolt cable to your MAC, both video and audio are active, and you'll be able to use both the built-in camera and mic while on a Facetime call.

    Thanks for this video. It was an inexpensive fix thankfully. What is it with Apple chords?

      @LaMar, thanks for watching. Glad to hear you got value out of the video and that you were able to fix your display. And yes, materials used on Apple cords have been historically bad!

    If it’s your Thunderbolt cable that’s bad, save a bunch of hassle and just get the Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable (male to male) from Amazon and plug into the Thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor. Saw this in another video and just did it and it works perfectly, without having to take anything apart.

      @Mauro, thanks for watching and for taking the time to post your comments.
      Have you resolved your Display issue?
      Did you try replacing the all-in-one cable? Or did you try the stand alone Thunderbolt cable option like @Curtis Larson suggested? Which is also another work-around.
      Please keep us posted, we're here to help.

    Great video! I am borrowing a screen like this and am trying to hook up to my MacBook via a multiport. Nothing happens. The screen is all dark. The power cable is plugged in. Any ideas? Do I need to plug in the little power adapter that is coupled with the Thunderbolt cable in order to get the screen to work?

      @Stefan, yes, you do need to plug that little power adapter _OR_ connect your PC to a direct power supply - If your PC does not a have a power supply, your monitor wont work. Hope this helps.
