Alright, now that I’ve listed the tools you’ll need to complete this DIY, let's get into why I decided to repair my 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display in 2021. Besides the obvious, it went black and never turned on again. And wanting to save you all time and money in order to get you back to enjoying your monitor as quickly as possible.
I want to start off with quality, let's face it, Apple using the highest quality materials available to manufacture their products. These displays are built well and they are built to last. These things are work horses and are still going strong in 2021. Folks I know who own one of these, just don't want to get rid of them, and wouldn't consider another monitor.
Secondly, I want to address compatibility, because I have not seen another non-Apple monitor that integrates so well with MacOS operating systems. I love the fact that I can control volume and brightness levels right on my keyboard. No reaching behind the monitor or turning little knobs that are an eyesore on my workstation!
Third, I plan on getting a second monitor in the near future, and that’s why I didn’t want to take a shortcut. Many folks use the spare Thunderbolt 2 port in the rear of the monitor as an alternative when the main Thunderbolt 2 cable goes bad. If I went that route, a second monitor would not be an option.
Lastly, these things are just bad ass, so if your Apple A1407 is not working, why not fix it if the repair is relatively inexpensive? And in my opinion, DIY is the best route, since most PC repair shops don’t work on these types of monitors. I did find a local repair shop who specializes in Apple products, but just for them to take a look at and give me an estimate was between $65USD and $85USD. Not to mention the repair could take up to two weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If I can fix my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 not turning on, so can you! The most difficult step of the process is really detaching and attaching the (4) cables that tie the LCD monitor to the logic board. So roll up your sleeves and good luck with your DYI repair.

      @nicolasdanjou1262, Thanks for watching and for your question. What is the Model Number of your display? And to what MAC are you trying to connect it to? When you connect the Thunderbolt cable to your MAC, both video and audio are active, and you'll be able to use both the built-in camera and mic while on a Facetime call.

    Update, My Studio Display blew up yesterday, belching smoke for 6 minutes before a final loud bang. Only lasted 18 months, very scary failure and I did get it on video. Posted pictures of the failure on my community tab and what to look out for before this failure. I can't post a video because I now have no display. Negotiating a full refund.

Glad to hear it did not escalate into anything major. Hopefully Apple will make this right and refund your money or any other satisfactory solution. Hola Humberto! Thank you so much for providing this easy to follow tutorial repair. I found the Apple A1407 Thunderbolt Display Cable on eBay. I'm just having a hard time connecting the last sleeve with the tag (12:05). Should the last cable labeled "MLB SIDE ICT" face the frame or should it face the LCD display? Hope this makes sense. Please advise.

    • @HumbertoAreas

      @sandrasotoramos8293 Hello and thanks for reaching out, watching the video and taking the time to post your questions. You're not alone on this one... everyone has a hard time reconnecting that last cable with the tag on it. Although it is the hardest to reconnect, it is the easiest to figure out in which direction/orientation it should slide in. The tag and lever on that cable should face up and away from the logic board, otherwise you will not be able to fold over the tag/lever that holds it in place. So tu answer your question, yes, it should face the LCD displays. Please keep me posted on your repair and let me know which part of the video you found most helpful?

    Hi Humberto, thank you for making this video. I recently bought a used 24" LED Cinema Display for my MacPro computer but it only lasted a few days, actually less than a week. It suddenly went black and hasn't comeback since. After researching this model online I found that the Thunderbolt cable dying is a very common issue with these models. Then I found your video and was encouraged by it to challenge myself to do the repair and fix this beautiful monitor. I think it's truly worth it. The problem seems to be finding this particular cable to buy it brand new. I have found a few used ones on eBay but who knows how much life is in them, maybe they'll last another few days and then you have to start over looking for a cable and doing the repair over again. So my question to you is this, if you don't mind me asking… is it possible to find the original cable brand new, and where? Did you find a brand new cable for your monitor, or was it also a used one?

    • @HumbertoAreas
      @HumbertoAreas 2 місяці тому

      @pacobelsue6661 Thanks for watching and for taking the time to post you comments and questions. Glad to hear my video encouraged you in some way to take action. As you hunt for a new cable... my first question is: What is the model number of your display? Sounds like you have a Cinema Display my friend, and not a Thunderbolt Display. This has a lot to do with the type of cable you're looking for. If indeed you have a Cinema Display, you need to look for a "Mini DisplayPort cable" and not a Thunderbolt cable. You can go to everymac.com/monitors/apple/ and verify which display you have. And to answer your question, never gamble your money on used electronic parts, always buy new when possible. I found my cable on Amazon - although I've noticed that sellers offering these cables are few now. Please keep me in the loop and posted on your display. PS: which part of the video did you find most helpful?

    Great walkthrough Humberto! I just found a great conditioned Thunderbolt Display sitting next to my apartment dumpster. I opened it up, and although I found a couple dead roaches at the base of monitor where the sound comes from (LOL don’t tell my wife), everything else is clean and appears never to have been opened. Just ordered a new set of cables, so hopefully this fix does the trick. Is this cable issue a common problem for the Thunderbolt Display??

      @@HumbertoAreas Initially purchased a USED all-in-one cable, which actually showed the display turn on, showing some signs of life; however, after some flickering it would soon turn off. So I returned the used cable and ordered a brand new one instead, and now its been nearly a full week since, with the display functioning and staying on! Thanks a bunch Humberto, it's beautiful! I just have one problem now: I have the display hooked up to my iMac, and after it goes to sleep and I wake it up, I then lose ability to adjust the display's brightness via the system setting --> displays controls. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but still can't retain brightness adjustment controls after going to sleep. As of now, the only way to regain adjustment function is to disconnect, then reconnect the thunderbolt cable. I'm just worried continued reconnection might wear out the cable :( Any ideas??? FYI: I'm using a 2013 27" iMac 780M GPU, on the latest Ventura OS via Open Core Legacy Patcher. The iMac on Ventura runs beautifully smooth with no hiccups anywhere else.

    Hello, before you did your repair, did the monitor show any sign of life when plugged in (any sound, fan noise, panel light etc)? The reason I ask is my A1407 Cinema Display shows no signs of life when the power cord is plugged in and was wondering if I would have to look at the power supply too. I did have an Apple tech plug a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable from the back of the monitor to his laptop to see if that would result in an image (as I read some people had this work where they then did not need to replace the full internal cord assembly), but that did not result in an image either. Great video by the way!

      @tomstone3816 Thank for taking the time to post your questions and for watching. To Answer your questions, no, my display did not show any signs of life when plugged to a power outlet. Quick question: when Apple tech plug the display to his laptop, does the Operating System recognize the display? You can check by going to System Settings > Displays. If the display shows up there, then you may not need to worry about the power supply just yet. Keep me posted on your progress. What part of the video did you find most helpful?

    Humberto - fantastic video. I was able to get my wife's Thunderbolt monitor working again. Thank-you! That cable with the tab is a real PIA. @HumbertoAreas Рік тому

      @chrismehling9968, thanks for watching my video, glad to hear you got value out of it. Since these displays are so old now, everything about them is challenging - and yes, especially that PIA cable. 😄 Have you examined the tab that came lose with a magnifying glass? It'll be helpful to determine whether it came off, or broke off? if it broke off, there is black electrical tape that perhaps will do the trick of holding that tab in place. Similar black tape is used around the displays to hold cables in place. So perhaps we can apply the same? Either way, when moving the display, be extra careful to minimize any vibration that would make the tab/cable come lose. Which part of the video did you find most helpful?

    hello! i recently repaired a monitor that only had audio i found by the trash just by plugging in a loose cable! it was all perfect and great for a few days until i accidentally knocked it over and because i didn't put the screws back in, gravity essentially ripped the connections apart from the screen and i messed some things up. i was able to connect the other 3 connectors fine. but for this fragile one you removed at around 2:09, i noticed it completely detached from the black and metal part its supposed to be in, and i assume that was supposed to be attached to the t10 screw piece. because that broke, do you think i can still bring this thing back to life? is there a way i could reconnect the two wires into the socket again? :(

    Thank you for mentioning this: "Many folks use the spare Thunderbolt 2 port in the rear of the monitor as an alternative when the main Thunderbolt 2 cable goes bad." This is all I needed but if this hadn't worked for me, I was prepared to follow your excellent instructional video.

      @HumbertoAreas Рік тому

      @J M, thank you for watching and for posting your comments. Indeed, using the spare Thunderbolt port is a great work-around to this issue. The only setback to that route is you have to run a separate charging cable to your laptop (in my case), and I hate cables all over my desk. I try to minimize cables where ever possible. Glad to hear this option worked for you and again, thanks for sharing your experience/solution with everyone here.

    Can i ask what it is in the cable that breaks? My display has power as it will charge the laptop but the screen won't come on, do you think that is a cable issue or something else? Great video btw. 🙂

    • @HumbertoAreas
      @HumbertoAreas 2 роки тому

      @Wiljuchi, thank so much for watching and for taking the time to post your comments and questions. Keep in mind that a Thunderbolt cable carries both audio and visual. So when everything is bundled into one cable, it is very hard to know which part is not working or sending signal. Now the power magsafe cable stems separately from the bundled Thunderbolt cable. So it is possible that the power/magsafe cable still works and charges your laptop. So it is possible that the charging cable works, but then there is an issue with the Thunderbolt cable itself. Q: When you connect the display to your PC, does the PC recognize the display? What setup are you using? Let me know and I'll try to best help you. Look forward to your response.

      @@HumbertoAreas Hiya, thanks for replying. So with mine it was doing the flashing like your display. If it’s your Thunderbolt cable that’s bad, save a bunch of hassle and just get the Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable (male to male) from Amazon and plug into the Thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor. Saw this in another video and just did it and it works perfectly, without having to take anything apart.
