“I use this stuff to clean my bath, but it works just as well on this monitor” quote of the year xD
lol.
Haha 😂😂😂
The fact that they used a label off of a "having fun" lube packaging for blocking the camera makes it even more gross imo.
:) (indeed!!!)
they definitely had some fun tho..
LMAO
How do you know?
@@harrycarrico981 I am German and it basically is the text on that sticker. ^^
I found one like this in the trash pile at my old job. It worked fine but was just filthy, so I spent a bit of time cleaning it and used it for years. The person who has my job now still uses it 👍
lucky you!!! (i spent 250 euros for a used led cinema display!!!)
I recently bought a $75 not working MacBook Hugh. It was the same in cleanliness. Dust was caked on the board. I was wearing a mask and gloves while cleaning it.
Got it working too! 😃
This goes to show how having filthy tech can render "broken" and also buying it for a much lower price!
Does it make a lot of noise ?
I still rock a Thunderbolt Display with a M1 Max 16” MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Still a great display considering it was made in 2011. Mine is in pristine condition and only needed it’s power supply replaced since they were prone to failure.
yes me too, i have a 14" M1 MAX MacBook Pro.
the only reason I don't use it anymore is the headaches the glosy display causes, but I work with documents , I presume should still be great for creative work
So it is possible to use this old display on USB C/Thunderbold 3 Mac eh? Thanks for the information, I thought this monitor only works with Thunderbolt 2 Macs.
Since actually it's not that hard to find this Thunderbold Display for cheap nowadays in marketplace, thank you for the information, I might go with this display instead of studio display that cost a lot. I need the screen real estate for work, 2K is fine for me.
Same :)
Is the magsafe connector for power ? I went to the Genius Bar yesterday and they said the monitor MIGHT be able to be peaired once I showed him the pictures.
Well done video. I may have mentioned this before but Hugh's videos always stand out to me because of how he takes the time to clean as well as instruct on cleaning products.
Nice restoration - these displays still look good (at least they do once cleaned!) and would be ideal to use with any recent Mac equipment.
Why someone would sell anything in such poor/dirty condition, I do not know...
People are lazy. Look on Market Place with how many items are on sale that 'just need a clean'. Most of these things are disgusting, but if the seller spent 20 minutes cleaning it, they could ask probably 2x more than they would get for it filthy. In some cases, they'd be able to sell it.
The best part is when those sellers actually have the audacity to sell it for 2x higher regardless of it's condition or placement next to much cleaner items.
I think the reason some of the dust has accumulated on the magnets is because cigarette smoke can contain some metallic elements, and a long time exposure to that metallic smoke/dust will cause the magnets to pick some of it up
For anyone thinking the exposed power supply isn't that bad, it is. I got shocked and burned a month back from an iMac. Seriously recommend wearing gloves.
What glove
@@thedark3419RUBBER GLOVES YOU TWAT!!!!
Rubber gloves?
Wow, what a difference. Great video!! Love that you restore older devices thus saving on e-waste. Keep up the great work.
You never fail to amaze me with all your projects! Great job!
Soooo satisfying watching this get cleaned!
I’m always waiting for the best Saturday notification, your content never disappoints! 👌🏽👏🏼
Air compressors are awesome for blowing out even the toughest sticky dust.
SO SATISFYING! Thanks for cleaning Hugh :D
Excellent video on the steps to manage cleaning. Thank you.
Amazing work!
yeah, these displays are awesome! I use a 30” Cinema HD Display and despite it being only a TFT panel, it still looks very good, especially when you work with colors.
0:30 that is a sticker describing lubricant in German.
"Silikonbasiertes Gleitgel" means silicon based lubricant and "Latexkondomgeeignet" is a single word that means suitable for use with latex condoms, leaving no doubt about the kind of lube.
I do look forward you your sunday videos hugh, another job very well done
Amazing job ! Cheers from Lisbon
I'm with you on this, I always clean anything that I'm selling, wouldn't dream of selling dirty kit.
FINALLY AN IMAC VIDEO IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR A MAC OR AN IMAC one
I really don't know why your channel isn't over million subscribers yet
Share..share..share!
Hey man great stuff I love these monitors too!! I've been refurbing them as well, really good work on getting it back into shape!
Thank you!
I got one off gumtree along with some other broken MacBooks as broken and I just replaced the wire and it worked fine. Sounds amazing and can connect any usbc thunderbolt devices with great image display. Good find.
Not sure why this was entertaining but it was. Fantastic job my friend. It looks great!
Hello Hugh love your videos so great 😀
This was really satisfying to watch. Even more so than the usual ones. :)
I work in the IT department at my college and my boss still uses one of those Apple Thunderbolt Displays. Theirs however has some kind of electrical issue (probably with the power supply or power delivery over Thunderbolt) which causes their laptop to crash randomly when connected and also occasionally shock them or spark. They're great monitors but it feels like there's a lot more that can go wrong with them than others.
Well that sounds like an issue with the power cable. If it can't ground properly then that shock will go through you to get to a ground.
@@MrMega200 yeah. Nothing is visibly wrong externally so I guess it’d have to be taken apart to see what’s up.
Since you're based in Australia, you should have heard about the brand "total tools", I have their air blowers and vacuum tools, they're just awesome and I guess it would be great addition to your tools for better working on this kind of dirty repairs. Love this video as usual.
I use to sell stuff on eBay and I always cleaned everything as best I could before I shipped it out.
Love this monitor. Have had time now for 10 years. Still works perfectly. I used to use it on my 2015 15" MBP, which was a perfect connection. Now, I'm using it with my 2022 16" MBP, which means you need a thunderbolt 2 -> thunderbolt 3 (usb-c) adapter. Apple sells one. This also means, you cannot use the MagSafe charger anymore, which is one of the cables. But all in all, I still love it. I'd like the newer one. But they've bumped up the price way too much while not adding more features like more hz and a bigger screen.
The thunderbolt connection on the board is really fascinating and makes sense that it's a hub for the ports on the back. I didn't know they came with FireWire ports either
Hugh right in there with -ve FB, top man.
so satisfying!
looks nice, great video
Good cleaning 👍👍
Nice clean 💪
Love your videos. Inspired by you, I restored my 15 year old compaq v6000 and 10 yr old PC to workable state.
Good job! Nicely done, too the only thing was we didn't get a good look at the screw-in cable from the LCD.
well done huge
thank you so much for this video. I will try it myself as the thunderbolt wire went dead on my 27 inch one.
Recently I have bought a 27 inch thunderbolt for $20 and a 27 inch apple cinema for $50. Best monitors for the price. And thanks for showing the internals, always wonder what they look like inside.
02:54 - Back when I used to sell new/bespoke PCs and repair/service old ones, my favourite tools for removing dust (and sometimes quite considerable amounts of dust and fluff) from hard to read areas was a 1/2" paint brush and a small nozzle end connected to a vacuum cleaner, worked ace! Especially getting into all the crooks and nannies! 👌😏 😎🇬🇧
nooks and crannies lol
@@ForgettableS Haha I knew what I said hahaha 👍🤣🤣
Good tip with the Ajax. Going to try that on a gross MacBook I’ve acquired.
Tip from a windowcleaner. Everthing that involves cigarette smoke and nicotine fallout can easily be removed with a mixture of 20/80 spray bottle ammonia/demineralised water.
Great presentations you have! I suggest though that you mention the screw driver sizes while doing it so that one can prepare. Also what power cable do I have to order would be nice to know before I start. You know what you know most people do not know.
at that size at 27 inch and resolution of 2560x1440, this is still perfect, good display quality and good speaker quality.
Excellent
very good👍
Smoked Display 😂 Good work fixing it! Greetings
i have the previous version of this display, the LED Cinema Display. which is more versatile than the Thunderbolt one on my opinion as it has MiniDP instead of Thunderbolt.
i got it over ebay for a very low price and it survived overseas shipping thanks to the seller's judicious use of bubble wrap and foam, and the display was great, all clean and nice. so theres still people who do care to clean their stuff before selling it.
i wait for one from Germany (i live in Greece), but luckily will come with its box!!!
A “Magic Eraser” aka melamine sponge is what you need for the dirty cables. It will have them looking like new.
Those things really are magic
Would love to see a video converting these to a single usb-c cord for charging, picture, sound, and usb in the back.
That’s an insane deal! The 24” version sells for twice that here. Cool to see things deep cleaned like this too.
thing is 10 years old. not worth its weight in scrap
@@megami215 it’s also higher resolution and in fact better than many brand new monitors. I haven’t seen a 24” monitor over 1080p, and tons of monitors still use IPS panels like this one, in fact it’s _the_ main display technology used. 60hz is fine, and having 4 USB ports integrated into it is above average too.
@@myrealusername2193 60 hz 1080 p is literally 2012 specs. get off tim cooks nut
@@myrealusername2193 tn panels arre cheap and awful,, oled has been the standard for about 5 years. my phone has higher resolution then that crap monitor and its 3 years old lmao
@@megami215 oled has not been the standard for computer monitors. I can't even name one oled monitor. now in the t.v space yes. but not monitors. most monitors are still in fact TN or IPS. they are the dominant display type in the monitor space.
And woopty funking dooo your phone has a high resolution display. do you want a fucking metal for that? Hell fucking movie theaters still mostly cast at 2k, 1440p. wouldn't doubt your phone has the same or higher resolution as well.
You should check out a device called the compucleaner, basically a can of air duster that never runs out, but twice as powerful, i use it daily to clean my vacuum cleaners filter.
Excelente pantalla 😮😮
0:30 "Silicone-based lubricant made for more intense an- erm, backdoor fun" 😂😂 Hugh, did the seller happen to be a shady German backalley s*xshop?
Probably a motherfucking s*x shop
I’m so glad I’m not the only person who spotted that! 🤣
2:32 I use that for "other things" 🤣 Didn't know it had other uses 🤩
I had one of those manual ball duster things and ended up getting an electric dusted instead and it is soooo much better
I think the same thing every time I see him use this. SO much better!
A few weeks ago I got one of these for $40!! It was a steal and it worked fine! The only thing wrong was the slightly damaged thunderbolt cable which still works fine, I use it with my M1 MacBook Air
I have one of those VGA CRT monitors.
hugh needs to do some console restorations.
hi love your apple content @hugh. Question: just got me a thunderbolt display. 2 days working good, but sometimes the video turns off, with sound, then i had to remove the adaptor and put it back again, then it works. also notice sometimes its flickering. what do you think is the issue? the adapter? or (i hope not) the logic board?
Thank you!
That manual air blower looks like more powerful than I was thinking. How does it stuck up aganist a classic air compressor for the pressure it can generate with a single jet of air?
I sold my Thuderbolt Display a couple of months ago. Not a scratch on it and I still cleaned the heck out of it. Even had a good box for the buyer. I could never sell anything looking half this bad.
Awesome⭐️
I have two Thunderbolt displays on my main workstation at the office. They are fine screens, however over time they do develop some "weathering" in the display. It's subtle but noticeable when the screen is showing all white. Regardless of this, I still love them and will use them until they quit. Thanks for giving this poor abused and neglected screen you bought some much-deserved love, Hugh!
What you're seeing is likely dust that is building up on the glass and LCD inside of it due to the fact it draws in air and dust.
I used my LED Cinema Displays 12-15hr days for several years after getting them and they are still perfect. I only use them at half brightness so that might be a factor.
If the led panel goes (or is fading) you can still buy the same LG panels brand new from Aliexpress. My then almost 10 year-old TB display blinked out suddenly one day - I still had power and data so took a punt that it was just the led panel.
Including shipping it was c.A$300 (approx US.$220 at the time). Between iFixit and a couple of tear downs on UA-cam for reference I did the swap myself. (Keep your old panel and hardware handy, you’ll need to transfer several bits from it to the new one.)
These monitors may be old now but the picture quality is still superb and the utility (Ethernet, USB, Thunderbolt and laptop charging) makes them unmatched for a Mac user for under $500.
Satisfying 😀
Cigarette smoke. Years ago worked in an space where there were some private offices. The walls were those cheap one with metal studs instead of 2 X 4s. The ceiling panels continued over the walls and were not cut to fit at the wall. We had a renovation and the wall came down. The smokers ceilings panels were yellow right up to the form wall. The panels that went over the wall, were yellow on one side and white on the other. Funny thing, one guy died of cancer while still working. The other, my boss got Emphysema.
I bought one of these couple weeks ago but when I started using it I realised it had no sound
. So I opened it up and found out that the speakers had been taken out and the seller did not mention this so I returned it.
Have your tried eucalyptus spray and magic wipes? they work wonders
I mean.. hugh look on the bright side it gives u something to fix and restore and it's cheap! But just remember not to get scammed great video tho we all love seeing u fix and restore electronics so keep up the great work
I’m looking for a 2nd one of these. I absolutely love mine and want to do duel Thunderbolts with my MacBook Pro.
1:11 It reminds me of the brand new to the market in the year 2022 1600 USD Studio Display.
Isopropanol works fine for removing cigarette dust and especially cleaning apples cables. They look brand new after that. Just take a towel and the cable with one hand and pull the cable in both directions with the other hand.
0:31 No wonder the screen was sticky
"Silicone based lube which was developed for an intensive ... Jojoba extracts for a long lasting lubricity ... suitable for latex condoms"
Hugh now regrets he did not wear gloves..
Nice video, even though I moved on from Apple Cinema Display to the new Studio display at home I am still using another Cinema Display at the office connected to a PC laptop. Nothing compares to Apple build quality on their monitors.
A couple of questions sir:
Do you find the screw heads are chewed up by using such a small screw driver and your wrist constantly changing the direction of drive?
Is there a certain order that you do the screws up in, to avoid warped PCBs or to avoid putting twisting/torsional flex in the boards?
Cheers man
When removing nicotine, I always use a solution of water/ammonia/methylated spirit and maybe a little detergent. Works really good (also for cleaning windows btw).
Great video as always!
I love ur vids.
Still rocking two 30 inch cinema displays. only downside is the 2 adapters needed to get it to displayport XD
When cleaning dust you can put the vaccum near it, then brush the dust into vaccum saves it flying everywhere
I've been waiting for this video!!!!
I still love my 2010 LED Cinema Display.
What size screwdriver is used for the last two screw under the circuit board to unplug the thunderbolt cord? I got all the way to that last step and couldn’t complete it because those two screws were slightly smaller.
Hey Hugh, would you know of a way to test the PSU and logic board that you would like to share.
Thanks
ps an awesome video
Hugh Hill
Great content as always mate. How do these displays stack up today? Say on an M1 MacBook?
The m1 MacBook will be a lot greater
@@cpg_official4837 you don't get the point, how well it works with M1?
Perfectly. Just no MagSafe (different version).
@@fmarinosfromafar9512 nice. I’m in the market for a display but don’t want to spend mega bucks on the new apple one. Dell have a decent range with “dock” style at ports at the back
Use denatured alcohol, it’ll eat all the grim off the aluminum. Do not use it on plastic or painted items as it will strip it off and melt plastic, I used it on iMacs and Mac pros when I was refurbishing them for a company. It works great on making the aluminum look new again
Seeing that TESA cloth tape on the cables tells me that this was probably used in an auto shop or by someone who works on european cars.
I was walking home last night & lying on the sidewalk was a 27 inch thunderbolt display !
Glass smashed & was filthy.
Led screen seems intact.
Back was dirty & cleaned screen and back.
Aluminum sides of screen look rusty.
I don’t have a newer Imac except my Silicon M1 Mac Mini so I don’t know if it would connect to that.
I plugged it in to a power strip & nothing went poof !
It also had a Vesa mount on it instead of the stand.
I can get the glass, stand, even a display.
I need the tools to open it up & have NO idea what tool to get the VESA mount removed.
I could clean it up & sell it, I suppose.
Sides of aluminum look rusty though I understand aluminum doesn’t rust.
After I get a star screwdriver I will open it up & clean the inside.
It would be a pity to just junk it.
Would like your opinion please ?
I always wanted a thunderbolt display and always HATED Apples not including a power supply inside the cinema display.
I have a 17 inch connected to my 2005 Mac Mini in the bedroom.
I need to get the wifi & bluetooth kit installed in it.
I can get a stand, led display & glass on Ebay.
Hello, I have recently repaired a macbook pro 2013 broken lcd and I am about to repair a macbook air 2014 battery and trackpad and apple watch series 4 screen. I love repairing apple products and would really love to know where i can get some. Love the videos, keep up the great work!
I like this
I do some little repair to and sometimes the time for cleaning the device I work on is more than the time it takes to do the repair…🤦♂️😂
I have a question, could you attach a logic board of one iPhone to another model of iPhone and have the new iPhone think it’s the original that the board is from?
Hey good day bro, do you know how to fix a mac book pro 2012 13' when it doesn't power on and doesn't accept charge? Not even the charger lights (with a new charger as well).
4:25
The "would of" bugs me more than it should.
