@Why Tho There is a smarter thing to do, tie a string around your hard drive, not too tight because there is no harm if the drive falls out.. And then, grab the other end of the string, and spin the hard drive around you, so you give it force, to spin it later on, I have tried this for so many hard drives and the result, apart from broken mirrors in my house, was a bunch of 98% working hard drives, the 2% of it was a strange clicking noise it made, and it was happening with all of the hard drives, suprisingly!

just a pro tip for everyone: When ever you dust out a fan with compressed air, always hold the fans (so that they do not spin up) or disconnect the wiring from the mainsboard. This video is giving me flashbacks. I've opened up my Early 2008 24" iMac so many times over its 13 years of continual use from cleaning the fans to replacing/upgrading many parts just to keep it going. I've upgraded the HDD to an SSD (pro tip: remember to enable TRIM), replaced the GPU twice, the LCD, the logic board, CPU, and upgraded the RAM. Like the Ship of Theseus, very little of the original mac remains. But in the end I have a fully maxed out iMac (except for the GPU, for good reasons) that's still going strong. That said, I think it's high time I upgrade!
Huge respect to Hugh for his attention to detail and for bringing this old iMac back to life. Even though I wasn't the one doing the work, it was super gratifying to watch! 😀
For the issue of the wireless upgrade (with the screw hole not matching the case/mb), I've used a small piece of double-sided tape in lieu of the screw. Works great and allows the use of an upgraded component.
I still have the same iMac. Still works well especially considering the considerable age. Though mine does have a 7200rpm drive (perhaps it was a model up?). It also has another thing that new iMacs don't have, which is why is the reason I still occasionally boot it up, A CD/DVD drive!
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. It really started to slow down over the years. Yanking that old 750 GB mechanical hard drive out and installing a 2TB SSD really livened it up. Also installed a new battery. I get to flex on people with new MacBooks because I have a DVD drive and USB ports lmao
what's funny is that literally 4 years before this was released, iMacs, specifically G5s, could be opened by just loosening 3 screws on the bottom of the machine and lifting the back off
Another thing to consider is just replacing the Hard Drive cable that connects the two (Motherboard, Cable, HDD) - if the start-up shows the question mark folder. I had this with my MacBook Pro (took it to Qatar and it overheated, naturally). Replaced the cable and worked fine.
The early generations were great! Very durable and easy to service (replacing the hard drive and blowing out all the dust was about as much as one would ever need to do!)
this may shock you but this video actually helped a lot because i too recently found that kind of imac. the video helped walththrought some of the replacement and fixing process
7:21 That looks to be a desktop chip. Would it be possible to put a core 2 extreme in there instead? To get quad core performance? nevermind, you literally talked about that later on.
I cannot comprehend that somebody at Apple legitimately decided that the 2020 iMac should have a 5400RPM HARD DRIVE as an option in 2020. That's ludicrous considering the cheap prices of flash storage these days.
There's no 2020 iMac released yet. It's still dumb, but the iMac with the 5400rpm option is a spec bump released in 2019. Dunno why they'd still offer a mechanical drive as an option, but there's a big difference between a new 2020 model and an old model with lipstick on it.
@@VengFPV A MID-RANGE laptop from 2010 came new with an SSD? Excuse me, but I find that very hard to believe. Even high end ones didn't come with an SSD back then. Or on very rare and expensive occasions.
Great video, Hugh! Did you know that the 2007 24" iMac will recognize and utilize up to 6 Gigs of RAM, although the specs say the limit is 4 Gigs? I replaced my two 2 Gig SIMMS with 2 ea. 4 Gig SIMMS and, as you might say, it works a treat! The computer instantly recognized and displayed the "6 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. I also replaced my hard drive with a 1TB SSD. Although I use this machine only for importing old home videos and burning DVDs, the improved performance from the additional RAM and upgraded hard drive was very noticeable.
I couldn’t find an iFixit to change the thermal paste as my machine was super hot and tripping out. Turns out it was packed with dust and the thermal paste was clay. I had never done any work like this before and this video bailed me out. Computer is working great now! Thanks Hugh.
Props for pointing out the power supply charge. If anyone is looking to tear apart one of these or any computer in general, it's always a good idea to turn the device on a couple times while unplugged to try and remove any residual charge.

Hi! @HughJeffreys im from the country The Philippines this is one of my favorite to watch youtube channels from fixing smartphones and other things relaxing and relieving my stress.
Wow, thank you so much for this. I got a free iMac, I have not touched it yet since Im deployed, Im pretty sure it does boot up to that blank screen. I pretty much want to repair it either myself, if it is the hard drive that is fried. Get it back to working condition, then pretty much send it to Apple to trade in for a new one. But like yours, Im not sure what year it is. Im positive it is a 2013 or newer model. Im not sure whats in it in terms of hardware, but the previous owner did say it does have an i7. They were just throwing it into a dumpster, and I kindly asked them to put it in the trunk of my car instead. I got it for free since they have an agreement with a company that comes in and replaces all their iMacs every couple of years with new ones. The ones that dont work, they often throw them away. Some tech folks do the same thing I did and wind up getting a free one, but you need to figure out whats wrong with it.
Wow! You are a miracle worker. This the first time I've come across your channel and I must confess, I am so glad to have found you. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro which isn't working. They say that its hard disk has been damaged and can't be repaired. Could you may be help me with it and make a repair video for your channel?
Older Macs really aren't that difficult to repair, as demonstrated in this video. In my experience, so many Mac users don't want to be bothered with repairs, they'd rather just buy a new one.
Appreciate this dude, bought one that I want to drop an SSD and Linux on to but the internal drive is dead as is. Wasn't quite sure how to crack the shell and you solved the mystery.
I like how you explain things, and having a voice over isn't something that's necessarily standard in repair videos, so kudos on that. One thing i wish you did differently was show every single step. You left out some things, for example, brushing out the heat syncs. I know this seems small, but it's incredibly useful to include everything for those that are just starting to get into computer hardware. I feel like even if the videos are double the length, you'd really stand out by being super inclusive, and you'd get tons more subs from people who are looking to learn how to repair computer hardware (rather than random videos that get popular from the youtube algos) All in all, cheers man, great video. You've got yourself a new sub
There needs to be an air filter kit one could add to the Mac to prevent the dust buildup. This is probably what caused the failure in the first place or at least helped it to go out. Electronics and dust seem to be attracted to each other like iron and a magnet.
Nice job. I'm in the midst of a similar job on a 27" late 2015 iMac. Wanted to comment on the cooling fan. I have the same type of fan in mine and after a bit of studying it closely, I was able to get it apart quite easily for a more thorough cleaning. There are several "tabs" (not really sure what to call them) positioned around the fan and I just pried it carefully apart at each tab. Looks like you got yours as clean as mine. =)

I still have the same iMac. Still works well especially considering the considerable age. Though mine does have a 7200rpm drive (perhaps it was a model up?). It also has another thing that new iMacs don't have, which is why is the reason I still occasionally boot it up, A CD/DVD drive!
i remember watching movies on my old mac
With these specs, where I live it would probably sell as a last gen high end machine

I'm pretty sure that looks like a mobile processor to me.
Your right, that’s a laptop processor. A core 2 duo extreme would be incompatible

I cannot comprehend that somebody at Apple legitimately decided that the 2020 iMac should have a 5400RPM HARD DRIVE as an option in 2020. That's ludicrous considering the cheap prices of flash storage these days.

@@mallgrabberr all the time*
There's no 2020 iMac released yet. It's still dumb, but the iMac with the 5400rpm option is a spec bump released in 2019. Dunno why they'd still offer a mechanical drive as an option, but there's a big difference between a new 2020 model and an old model with lipstick on it.

I feel like even if the videos are double the length, you'd really stand out by being super inclusive, and you'd get tons more subs from people who are looking to learn how to repair computer hardware (rather than random videos that get popular from the youtube algos)
All in all, cheers man, great video.
