    You should have named this video as "Thunderbolt in 2019?" instead of a how to video. Such good quality review of the thunderbolt monitor. Does not deserve to be just a how-to. It's a review

      Do you know if you can connect two LED Cinema Displays to a 2019 MacBook Pro?

    • @inklipMedia
      @inklipMedia 2 роки тому

      When functioning, this would all be true. From what I can tell, MANY of these displays today have faulty (worn out) built-in cables. As a workaround (since I bought one with a faulty built-in cable -- the classic "intermittent and/or distorted video and/or audio connection"; mine looked good for the 3 minutes necessary to get me to buy it from the used seller, but the connector seems to crap out after a minute; others online have had similar experiences). Research so far seems to indicate a) you can connect directly thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt, ignoring the built-in cable (this is a test step to identify a bad built-in cable). It seems likely the built-in cable connects to the same thunderbolt bus as the removable cable connector, especially given the fact you can daisy-chain a 2nd one into the display chain, using that connector. You can buy a replacement built-in cable setup for about the same HIGH price as a thunderbolt cable, so if you want to wrench open your display and mess with a bunch of internal connectors to access the built-in cable connection points, that may be a good option. However, about 1/2 of Amazon.com replacement cable reviewers indicate they had poor results.
      I can confirm that either my display's entire thunderbolt / firewire bus is frizzed, or if it (and the FW800 if separate) are not frizzed, then the removable-cable firewire port CANNOT be used via MBP 2015 thunderbolt-to-FW800 adapter, to send picture to the display over FW800. Say a prayer for me that the FW800 is a different data bus, and the removable-cable thunderbolt bus still works (and if it works, then presumably also the internal thunderbolt that the built-in cable plugs into).
      I'm trying to decide whether to buy the replacement built-in cable (which I can text on the external connector before cracking the case to install permanently), or just buy a straight removable thunderbolt cable. I really like the notion of chaining a 2nd display and/or adding more thunderbolt devices to my chain.

    I’ve got one of these displays, originally purchased for my MBP 2011. I’m now using it with my MBP 15” 2018. Works really well. I’m about to get a MBP M1max, and it appears from research I’ve done it will work well with that too. Great display.

    This was confidence-building. I've seen every video out there on UA-cam about target display mode for these slightly older iMacs where after the thunderbolt 2 ports there's a mini display port. My 27" mid-2011 iMac ONLY has the two TB2 ports which aligns with this video!! And now I have a 2020 macbookpro with TB3! So excited.

    Been using 2 of these daisy chained with a MacBook Pro 2018 TouchID model and absolutely love the setup. The cables' insulation is starting to wear off a bit but they still work just great. They have a glass in front of them which can be taken off easily with a suction cup and put back with such ease. I hope they last me a few more years. They are such good quality, knock on wood.

    I'm still on a 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro, and only last year bought the 27" Thunderbolt Display after finding a super cheap deal on one. I bought it knowing it would work once I upgrade to a newer MBP with Thunderbolt 3. If it weren't for that Thunderbolt 2 port in the back, idk if I would have made the decision to buy it. Having only USB 2.0 in the back is the only real drawback. Even with SSD drives, USB 2.0 is REALLY slow. My photo catalog is on an external SSD and it's hooked up via Thunderbolt. I have a 4TB USB 3.0 drive and 4TB RAID FW800 drive connected for backups .
    I REALLY wish Apple would give us a new Thunderbolt 3 Dsiplay

    Thank you so very much for this video. I am planning to buy a new Mac Pro and wondered if I could use my 27" Thunderbolt 2 Studio display with the Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. It seemed to me that with the TB2 to TB3 adaptor from Apple, I should be able to do that. I thought I just needed to let the MagSafe dongle dangle. I contacted Apple via their chat online and asked the question. Apple's answer was, "No, you cannot do this!, the monitor will not work on the new Mac Pro." When pressed to further explain why I cannot do this, they rudely and abruptly ended the chat. This video came up when I Googled the question. Thank you so much for posting this, it is nice to find someone that knows more about this than Apple. Have a great day, Rick. 📸

    Great work on this video! Great content and high quality - thx. In 2012 I bought the Thunderbolt display (and a MacBook Pro 17" loaded with SSD only etc. - still using them together today), and back then I complained greatly about the price and the limitations (no ports for other PC connections). BUT NOW!!! Just ordered the Macbook Air M1 (16gb/1tb) and was concerned about only 2 USB C ports. But your video encourages me that when the laptop arrives in February (must wait est. 5 weeks), that with the old Thunderbolt display I will have a port replicator - the Ethernet (I still wire everything), USB, and I use Thunderbolt 2 from the monitor over to the Pegasus RAID drives (and have the wired keyboard with numeric keypad AND the DVD/CD drive) - so your video encourages me that all I needed to continue to use all this amazing stuff (8 years later) is to just get the new laptop and a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter cable (and I won't need any other mess of adapter cables) NOW I'm happy that this Thunderbolt Display was a fantastic value!!!

    I would say that this thunderbolt display is much better than any of the monitors on the market. If you wanted a decent monitor, it would be at least 200 and a good one will go up from 450-500. The cheapest thunderbolt display I could find is 350 and for a monitor that is a decade old, it's timeless, built to last, and if anything will be good enough for editing.

    Thanks, this is a really good informative video. I was just wondering though, I'm looking to get a 2nd screen for my late 2015 Retina 5K iMac and was wondering if its as simple as just connecting the lightning cable from the Cinema display to the lightning port in my iMac? Or is it more complicated than that?

    • @inklipMedia
      @inklipMedia 2 роки тому

      iPhones use(d) a 'lightning' connector. Thunderbolt uses a lightning bolt symbol. Just in case anyone was confused. Also 2011-2015 MBPros had combination thunderbolt / mini display port connectors, whereas some other peripherals (?) may have a mini display port that looks and physically functions just like thunderbolt, but provides no power and only communicates display-specific AV signal. Presumably a mini display port connector (or cable) would NOT have a thunderbolt symbol on it, but given how confusing this whole ecosystem is, I would not count on that.

    This was a very helpful video! Question for you, Ari! I just connected a new 15" MacBook air to this 27" display per your instructions, but have not been able to select the proper display settings such that I can use the 27" display while my MacBook air is closed. This is how I usually use my current set-up with a 2012 MacBook pro. And with my old MacBook pro open, I can also use the 27" inch display as an extended display, so I can have multiple apps working on both screens and move things between the two. I have searched for info on how to do this but none of the settings suggested have worked and none of the suggestions have been for current mac operating systems. Can you point me in the right direction on how to do this? Many thx.

    First off great video. This should be super simple and since my TB display has been sitting in my storage unit for a couple years I figured now that Im in a larger space I can put it to good use. I got all the cables - even the MagSafe adaptor which does provide a stable source of power from the TB to my M1 2020 MacBook Air - but I didn't get an image on my TB display when I initially connected everything, so I let it sit a few hours and when I came back to it my Air was asleep. When I woke it , the display was extended to the TB display!!! Wooohoooo!! It literally worked that night and never again. :( Now I have Ventura running on my Air and still nothing. Any suggestions Arikatect?

    You made my day. I’m ordering the new 16” MBP and was confused by the description Apple puts on the Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. There you can read it’s not compatible with Apple Cinema Display! Now you’re proving that the adapter is compatible, which is great news. Also on the web there’s people saying that the adapter mentioned above is not working with their Touch Bar MBP and the Apple Cinema Display! Wonder if that was addressed by new operating system upgrades or something.

    So I just picked one up and it works perfect with my older macbook air. My newer macbook for work has the new USB-C. My concern is that the thunderbolt on the monitor is slightly frayed and seems to be "sensitive". Could I do USB to USB-C or one of those other ports on the back to USB-C to get this to work? Or do I have to use the thunderbolt display cable?

    If the thunderbolt cable on the display is in bad condition, are you able to connect to the monitor using a thunderbolt cable from a Mac Air/Pro to the thunderbolt port at the back of the monitor? Will you get an image this way?

    I just bought one of these displays for my wife. I’m also using the T2 to T3 adapter and the video works great. However with the MacBook closed and in the docking station the displays built in camera, sound and mic can’t be used. Any idea why this is?

    Man if only they still made this monitor for Thunderbolt 3, or at the very least, updated USB 3.0 ports, i would so upgrade from my 27" Thunderbolt Display. I plan on upgrading to a new 16" MBP later this year, and will keep using my Thunderbolt Display. eventually I will add a CalDigit TB3 Plus to have a true one cable solution to the MBP.
    What I would love to see is a 16" MBP setup running four Thunderbolt Displays though. Obviously it would have to be two separate daisy chains, but the MBP can do it.

    Very useful video thanks. If the thunderbolt 2 connection of my Apple screen is damaged (jerks and not stable), how can I still make use of my Apple screen which I love? Or does this mean I need to change the thunderbolt 2 cable at an Apple service shop.

    Hey cool video man and very resourceful. So this should mean that I don't have to use the Magsafe connector and only the Thunderbolt 2 cable for a second screen? And let's say, that does not work, the display or the connectors are faulty?

    you can actually buy a Megasafe 1 to Megasafe 2 adapter, made by Apple. it has magnetic function. It fits right in to the Megasafe connector and converts it to Mega Safe 2. In fact Apple used to offer that as an option when purchasing an A1407 cinema display.

    Is there a way to make this monitor wireless like my mouse and keyboard which use bluetooth to sync with my macbook pro? I'd like to move the macbook to a new location but be able to use the thunderbolt on my desk wirelessly. Thanks!

    Thank you so much for confirming this setup! I didn't want to let go my Thunderbolt display when I got the 2019 MacBook pro. However, have you noticed how sometimes the display doesn't work? Sometimes I have to unplug and replug back in the USBC - Thunderbolt. Would you know a better solution to this by any chance? Thank you!

      very oddly, the cable must be right side up (the TB2 port cable must have the printed side up to be more stable at the laptop side) At least on mine (confirmed at the Apple store) it made a huge difference in stability - the Geniuses at the Genius desk couldn't explain it.

    Hi how are you? great video great review since I follow you, ask: I have a Thunderbolt Display Apple 27 "monitor, is the Apple Thunderbolt 3 To Thunderbolt 2 Adapter compatible? I have already bought one wrongly, I thought it could be useful, buy a Mini-Display Port to USB C from the StarTech brand and it does not work, someone in Macstore told me that the Apple Thunderbolt 3 To Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, it would not help me but it seems that in your video if it works, you can help me, in advance I thank you, good morning.

    This surprises me. I didn't think that this would work with a Thunderbolt monitor.
    Hoping this actually works as easily as you say with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017).
    Do you know if you can run two (2) of these monitors in this way concurrently?
    Also, will this work through a hub like the STONE Hinge Dock?

      Nunzio thank you! Secret is it’s actually the sad 4-core 2017 model year, but for this video it doesn’t matter since the chassis and Thunderbolt tech hasn’t changed since 2016. Linus tech tips did a fantastic video about the 2019 MBP performance and stability.
