Hello Everyone! I just want to let you know that Apple's Thunderbolt Display doesn’t work with 12-inch MacBook’s USB-C port
Correct, since that is a USB-C port only, without Thunderbolt. Confusing isn't it?
In deed, thats a stupid move made by Apple... 🤓
It won't work with my MacBook Pro 13 m1 either..Has anyone done it?
Is there no way of doing it? With an adapter or anything?
Unfortunately not possible. 😞
I can't believe you made a 6 minute video on plugging a cable into a port. Impressive.
Thank you. Thank you. I finally found exactly what I am looking for.
Thank you so much. This video helped me set up my MacBook Air 2020 (Non M1) to my A13136 Apple Cinema Display 27. I truly appreciate you.
Fantastic. The Thunderbolt display is working great. Can you recommend an extension cable to hook up between my Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and Macbook Pro so I have don't have to deal with the clunky adapter so close to the computer?
Thanks, great video. I had some issues with the Sound preferences. But after I restarted my Macbook. Everything worked perfectly. cheerd
Good to hear that you got work 🙏🏼
@@Askdoudou yes, I found if I’m switching between the different sound outputs (HomePod, TBD, computer) I need to restart to get where I want the sound coming from.
Thanks for the video. This is helpful. I have a 2020 Mac air and just purchased a thunderbolt monitor.
Nice to hear :)
Does the m1 MacBook Air connect to your thunderbolt?
Yes, its doable. the M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro can run more than one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz. 🙂
Thank you for producing this video to help others, it's great! Do you know if the same connector (thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2) applies for connecting the apple thunderbolt display 27" with the new Mac Mini M2 please?
very informative video, can you confirm if the dock gives 30hz or 60hz from the Aliexpress link seems that is 30hz, thanks
The Thunderbolt Display is and will always will be my favorite display to use.
Hello, Thanks for your video. You did n not show the camera working that is my issue. What was the name of the hub you used?
hi there, would you mind answering would the 2014 thunderbolt display work as a second monitor for the 2019 27inch imac please and if so what connectors would i need ?
Hi and thank you for the video, i have 2017 iMac (with USB C / thunderbolt) and MacBook pro , and i have a thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable ,, how to connect both and use the iMac as a display?
Thank you. This was helpful.
Just want to add for newer MBPs with the MagSafe, unfortunately, there is no older MagSafe on the TBD to MagSafe 3 adapter yet, and with low demand and I hear difficulty with the MSv3 engineering changes may not be. So an adapter, old MagSafe to USB-C adapter, or just use a power brick for your newer MBP.
Anyone know how to switch usb c or thunderbolt so I can use (and switch) between two Macs on a single thunderbolt display? When I use this 27 Thunderbolt Display on my Mac Studio it works, same for using it on my 2020 intel iMac.. it works. But is it possible to switch between the two without having to unplug and plug everytime? I haven't been able to find a hub or any amount of adaptors that can get that job done.
can I connect mac mini via thuncderbolt to an intel macbook and use its display, keyboard, trackpad etc?
Thank you for this tutorial. Sadly the sound does not work for me it plays through the laptop and there is no way to adjust brightness
Thank you for the video!
hi Sr. Question: do you know how to connect an IMAC 2014 Late to the new Studio Display? i want to use ths Studio Display like a second monitor for edit......thanks!
Hey man, I have an Macbook Pro 2021 - M1 - Monterey / do you know any iMac 27 retina will work as an external monitor? This macbook pro has HDMI port, I use HDMI to minidisplay? or I use the gadget that you used?
Can you hook 2 of these monitors to Mac Studio for dual monitor use?
Dear, Does this adapter work also for Thunderbolt Display Apple monitor to Macbook Pro M1?
have the two items suggested on the description video and in both computers its yellow color on the Bridge network but it is not working. Then when I go to advanced it says Thunderbolt 1 inactive, Thunderbolt 2 active. This is why I am not sure if I'm missing another piece. Please tell me! Thank you in advance. laptop is sonoma 14.1.1
imac is catalina 10.15.17
Great video! Thank You. I wasn't"t quite clear on why you needed the extra dongle, unless for just charging your MacBook. I chose to use the MagSafe charger to the fast charging power brick. It looks neater. To be clear, this monitor still looks great in 2023. I have it connected to my brand new M2 MacBook Air, running Mac OS Ventura. Using it as the primary monitor, with the MacBook keyboard and trackpad. I may pick up a USB mouse and keyboard, to use in clamshelll mode.
Hello,
May I know which connector you purchased?
Same here!
does this still work? I have a 2019 16 inch MBP and a Mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac. The 16 inch is running Big Sur and the 21.5 is running High Sierra...
can it work also on the newer model like the imac 27 5k display late 2015 model?
Can I use an 2019 Imac as my second external monitor for the mac air M1?
thank you I been seaching all day how to connect my macbook to my thunderbolt display
Good to hear that this helped you 👍🏼
This is what I was looking for to confirm that this will work with a hub in between the adapter and the macbook. I have a single usb c style hub. Hopefully it’ll still work
Will imac 2011 work with macbook air 2020 m1?

I have MacBook Air 2022 and my screen Thunderbolt Display won’t turn on but if I connect it to my 2011 man book pro it works
Any ideas ?
Does this work for the same style Apple 24in display too?
Hey, this doesn't seem to work for me. I bought an adapter (Thunderbolt 3/USB C > Thunderbolt 2) and I'm getting nothing. It does work with Macbooks that support Thunderbolt 2 though!
This adapter could work with PC too? Thanks
Hi! Thanks for good video. Let me ask a question, if you already installed Mac OS Big Sur, can you connect MBP in this video with Thuderbolt Display? I am considering to buy Thuderbolt Display, but I take care whether that connect with my MBP, which already installed Mac OS Big Sur.
I have tested it with my other updated macbook macOS Big Sur, and its working just fine. No problem at all 🤓
@@Askdoudou Really? I am happy to hear that. Thanks for your response.
So I took my 27inch Mac Display Monitor and connected the Thunderbolt 2 into the adapter (Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3) and plugged that into my MacBook Air 2022 M2/16gb. I'm running Sonoma 14.4. Nothing is happening. Crickets. Silence. Nada. Help?

Thanks for this video, it's really helpful. Just a quick question. Is it possible to close the laptop lid (as if it was docked) and still continue to have the display on the monitor with the use of an external kepboard and trackpad? I will be using a 2020 M1 Macbook Air.
Yes, its possible

Is it possible to connect Thunderbolt monitor to iMac 27’ 2017?
I’ve used my 27” Thunderbolt Display with my m1 Mac mini, m1 MacBook Air, and my m1 max 16” MacBook Pro They all work no hitches, glitches, or switches.
Can the MacBook Air M1 daisy chain with the adapter? Does it charge the computer too?

I got this display monitor and I want to connect to my PC I got the email thunderbolt adapter to HDMI but when I connect to PC nothing happen, can you help please?
I have a thunderbolt. Recent days it is switching on and off continuously. Any thing can be done to fix it.
Hi - how about connecting the display to Apple TV 4K?
How do you set up the camera on the thunderbolt? I was able to change the input / output on the sound, but not the video.
The camera should work once you open any video app such zoom and you will be able to select display’s camera.

what about connecting 2 monitors?
Thank you for the video. Works fine... but the external display (Apple Thunderbolt Display) switch off when I close my mac (MacBookPro 2019-Big Sur). With my old Mac Book Air, I was able to close my mac and use the external screen with external keyboard and mouse. Any solution?
Get the app kaka and you’ll be able to close your MacBook with the screen still on its part of the settings ! Thank me later if it works !
I don’t know why but the Mac has to be charging while closed and it works fine
Hi Buddy , great video but I don't get this to work, do you have any ideas about what could be the reason ? I use a MacBook (2017) connected with the local adapter and cable (not the Apple Thunderbolt) to an iMac 27" late 2013, i do not get the screen from the MacBook to share on the iMac. . Is it necessary to use Apple Thunderbolt Wires or should I need to downgrade my iMac OS . Please help.
My isn’t working either 😢
If I have a cable mouse and keyboard what do they connect to for control? Can they still work if connected to display USB? or both need to be connected to the macbook?
Yes you can connect those on your display’s USB Ports. No need to use your MB.
i got an error message saying that the accessory is not supported by this mac , when using an official product from mac

Hello sir. Does this work the same with a Macbook Air 2020?
I want to connect my Macbook Air (2020) to the Apple 27’’ Thunderbolt Display. Does the Apple Thunderbolt 3 USC C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter work to use it as an external monitor?
If its a M1 model then it won’t connect with the monitor.
Very cool 😎
Hello, thank you so much for this tutorial- I recently purchased a new MacBoook Pro (2023) and when connecting it with my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27'' with the adapter, nothing happens on the screen, it simply stays black. Are there any settings that I might have to change?
Hey, did u find a solution for it? Or is it not possible with the new macbook?
I unfortunately did not find a solution. @@minimalisterPro
Is it comparable with mini mac m2
Hi there it was a great video. Thank you! However I am running into a problem regarding the Thunderbolt display's brightness. I have a MacBook Pro 2020 which I want to plug into the monitor. I also have the necessary Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 Adapter you outlined above. The monitor has been working as expected for a while now. Just last week when I plugged it in, the screen got very faint and does not show the picture fully. I can only see the screen when I hold a light to it. The problems persisted and I cannot fix. The mag safe charger works OK, the sound comes through clearly and the laptop recognizes the Thunderbolt Display. But the screen is persistently very faint. Even when I push the brightness up on the keyboard, it doesn't fix. Any tips here? Thanks!
Sounds like an inverter issue on the screen.
does this display adapter work with the mac mini m1 to 27 apple cinema display (non-thunderbolt) that preceded this model?
Unfortunately it won’t work with the M1 models
@@Askdoudou Is there a way to connect via the HDMI port instead?
What about resolution?
Can You send sound too
My monitor screen flickers and goes black when using the thunderbolt cable to connect to my MacBook Pro. I believe there is a faulty connection somewhere between the monitor and the MacBook Pro. Would using the thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro allow me to use the monitor in that same fashion ?
I have the same issue as well
I’m having the same issue. I saw on a forum that it worked connecting that way with no further issues. So I’m trying that next. I also bought an original power supply cord off of eBay. The display I purchased was from FB marketplace. Although it looks to be in excellent condition , the seller didn’t have the original power cord. After researching ( someone correct me if I’m wrong ) it appears that you actually must use the original power cord due to electromagnetic measurement or something. So I’m going to see what happens. Then if exchanging the power cord, and plugging into the back of the display port doesn’t work, I’m going to update the firmware. I hope I can get it sorted out, I love this display!!!
Are you able to charge your laptop with the thunderbolt adapter? Great video!
Short answer is no.
I had this issue: the hub adapter had two thunderbolt- I use one for external monitors 4K and second won’t charge. I bought a different hub which was less complicated and both worked fine. Weird but I think it depends on the adapter now that technology is finding solutions to previous problems.
I have 2 monitors of these and was afraid to have I will not be able to use them with my coming 16” MacBook. Thanks for the video.
Will this adapter works with the first generation of this display model?
Yes its working just fine 💪🏼
The ability to adjust brightness right from the keyboard alone is helping with my sanity.
If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.
Can you use the thunderbolt input instead of the cable?
Yes, you can use a TB2 cable from the back output to the 2-3 adapter, some have found the built-in TB cable degraded and not usable, and rather than take the glass off and repair this works
Nice video! But how i connect tv box to tis display, thanks
Yes you can definitely connect your TV with the Apple 27 inch display through the thunderbolt Port located in the back of the screen.
But you would need a thunderbolt to HDMI cable like this one from Amazon:
Thunderbolt to HDMI Adapter: amzn.to/3ncyL4e
or this Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable : amzn.to/2Uixr3w
@@Askdoudou I tried, bought lots of adapters, but thunderbolt has just Hdmi out, only one way just to connect another monitor, not in. With usb I can connect hard drive, but HDMI? Apple doesnt know. i spend 1 our with them online. Very bad

Have you already updated your computer to one of the latest software? If you already done, Next, try using your thunderbolt display without having any USB devices plugged into it. If the problem still persists, the issue might be from speakers in the display. Maybe you can test with external speakers.
@@Askdoudou it worked!!! thank you :D

Hey do you know if I would be able to close the laptop, and still use the iMac ?
Yes 👍🏼 you can. I always kept my macbook closed and whenever i m done i just put it to Sleep mode. 👍🏼
Hi, tell me what MacBook model do you have? I just noticed with MacBook pro 13inch must be connected to charger. If not it will turn to automatically sleep mode. Unless you change that from Preferences and TURN OFF automatic sleep mode.
hey great video. question in the back of the display there is a thunderbolt 2 port , can you connect a ssd or hard drive and check the transfers speed??
Hi, I would've really want to test that, unfortunately I don't have any SSD with Thunderbolt 2 interface (because I couldn't find any from the market (This is most likely due to the recent arrival of Thunderbolt 3.0/USB-C hard drives).
But if you are looking for a way on how to keep up with fast transfer speeds with external drives (Thunderbolt 2 = 20 Gbps or 2.5GB/s) from your display: I suggest that:
1- You get yourself an SSD Enclosure,Thunderbolt3 Hard Drive something like this one: amzn.to/2JbJwVE
2- You can then use Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, so you can connect it to the display: amzn.to/3l29DvK
This will insure that you get a higher transfer speed. Please if you have achieved this and tested it out, let me know in comment, or best if you can snap a screen video I will definitely share it with the guys. After all we want to share knowledge and help ;)
Thanks
The Thunderbolt port on the back of the display is Thunderbolt 1 which is 10Gb/s.
I have 27" iMac from 2013 and a 16" macbook from 2021. Connecting from usbc to thunderbolt did not work (all apple branded cables).
However ... a random cheap screen at work with hdmi DID work.
Let's say i go from hdmi from the macbook to hdmi/thunderbolt on the iMac? Would that work?
This is a bit of a sham I am afraid. The thunderbolt connector only works on 2009-2014 iMacs and only on 2019 or less new iMacs. 2020+ is not supported. However, "Luna Display" will allow for it, but it costs $120US. The 2013 27" is still a beautiful 4k monitor though so that $120 would be worth it. You can't buy a monitor of that quality for the sale price of the 2013 that looks anything near as good. I have been looking for nearly 2 years.
@@MrEiniweini thank you! That is great advice and I'll check out Luna Display asap ❤️

Yours is the only video I have seen which has showed the back of the iMac so thank you! I can see now why I couldn't get this connection set up at my end. For some weird reason, my 2017 iMac doesn't have the thunderbolt socket at the back of my iMac so I couldn't use the thunderbolt cable :( I wonder why this is the case on mine
mine doesnt have it either :( have you found anything to use?
@@yvetteochoa9289 No, I've now returned the thunderbolt cable and adapter after speaking with apple Support a couple of days ago. They told me that iMacs from I think 2017 no longer have the ability to be used as a second display which is a bummer, because one of the main reasons I bought both iMac and MBP is to set up an Extended display workflow :( newer iMacs apparently have had those thunderbolt ports discontinued and replaced solely with USB-C ones, and even if one gets the right cable, Apple has removed the target display application that allows the screens to be extended.
Apple told me that the options I have is to either get an older iMac or buy a third party Monitor. Technology should be an advancement not backward. Apple fails on this one, for the disadvantage it puts on "newer" iMacs :/
@@larryFWD oh my gosh I totally feel you! I talked to Apple too and they said it was not possible but I just felt like they said that because it’s not possible with “Apple products” because there is no such product they sell to help but I feel like other companies have the tools to use both as a dual monitor. I too bought my iMac thinking it would help me but if it doesn’t it’s a waste for me.
