    "Remember, Arthas, we are paladins. Vengeance cannot be a part of what we must do. If we allow our passions to turn to bloodlust, then we will become as vile as the Orcs".-Uther lightbringer.
    Funny thing many paladins in game have a lot of things related to vengeance.

    Am I the only one who actually thinks that Arthas did right with cleaning Stratholme? I mean, he could not prevent his people from changing so he gave them a quick death and at the same time, we prevented the Undead to get more soldiers. It was picking the smaller evil for Arthas and imo he did choose right

      I think that at that point they could not be certain that the entire population of the city would turn into undead. And I think that was also the main tenet of criticism from Jaina when Arthas ordered Stratholme to be purged. Still though, even if Arthas was certain that all habitants of the city would turn into undead it was an immense act of cruelty which furthered Arthas downward spiral.

    Something that's also interesting that I didnt mention is that when Arthas ran into Gavinrad, Arthas offered to let him live and to not hurt him if he simply stood aside and let Arthas pass. Gavinrad refused and insulted him which angered Arthas. Arthas then responded by saying that he would kill him, raise him into undeath, strip him of his free will and make him an obedient servant. Despite saying this though, when Arthas killed Gavinrad, he did not raise him into undeath. Instead, he let him enjoy the peace of death. Unfortunately though, his soul was still trapped in frostmourne so thats why the dks see him in their frost campaign

So yeah, you cant even enjoy the WC3 and WCFT story because they went back and ruined that too, they couldnt keep themselves away from doing it. Its all zenimax fault. Reign of Chaos was released in 2002 and Starwars episode 3, where the parallels between Anakin and Arthas killing their own people could be drawn, was made in 2005.
      The tragic story of a man who descends into madness and pure evil is not uncommon, and the archetype of a warrior monk (Paladins, Jedi, etc.) is often used in pop culture.
      Warcraft got their concept of the Paladins from Dungeons and Dragons Paladins, not the Jedi of Starwars.

But the trope of someone good falling in to evil ways because they are consumed by anger and hatred at the lose of something (friend/lover/etc.) goes back much further. Neither Star Wars nor WC3 were the first to do it, they are just two particularity famous examples of it.

    He wasn't just "evil" to be evil. He was a complex person, who believed he was doing the right thing until he had fully succumb to corruption. His story is a dark one about a fallen hero.. A fallen hero Warcraft will never forget. Even to this day, I hold wotlk as my favorite expansion of any game I've ever been able to play. I can definitely see where Arthas felt he did what he had to do.. And in the culling of Stratholme, I really didn't see any alternative myself than to purge the city of infected. Arthas's changewas a lot quicker than the lore updates changed, just playing up the drama.
    I haven't played W3 for years, but I still remember the dialogue like I heard it yesterday.
    "Finish it," Sylvanas sputtered, blood in her throat "I deserve a clean death."
    Arthas stood above the general, not in victory, merely in grim determination. "After all you've put me through, woman, the last thing I'll give you is the peace of death."
    He didn't rush over to Muradin after the dwarf was impaled. He was already broken. He merely looked at the fallen comrade, almost quizzically, then his attention was consumed by Frostmourne, landing right at arm's length.

    Honestly, playing through Warcraft 3, I understood exactly why Arthas was purging Stratholme. Yes, he was a Paladin. He ALSO was the Crown Prince and would someday be king in Lordaeron. His kingdom was being ravaged and his citizens wiped out by the Scourge Plague...and he had to find some way to curtail that. He had tracked the tainted grain through Stratholme and realized that practically the entire city was infected and would soon fall to the plague of undeath and the Scourge. If that happened any forces he dedicated to quarantining the plague would most likely be overrun by the wall of undeath surging from Stratholme and then turned to the Scourge. As much as it pained him, he thought the best (and most likely only) course of action was the purge the city. Better his citizens die than be converted to a colossal army of Scourge.

Blind by his rage he said that he is stripping him yes, but even though he is the son of the king he didn't had the authority to do so. It's not that the light refuses to help Arthas, it's that Arthas started doubting his own actions and that is why the light left him, Arthas was in conflict if what he is doing was right, if he was truly convinced that that was the only way to help the citizens the Light would have stood at his side to aid him, but deep down Arthas knew that he wasn't doing the right thing and that doubt led to the light abandoning him.

    One of the most complex character blizzard ever deliver. Like seriously his story was done so well. You see him descends from holy to madness in such a perfect balance. When he become a Death Knight, he was just a pure badass villain with no remorse. He saw, he come, he conquered. His arrogant even make him even cooler. And When he become lich king, god he even more meancing with his deep tone, and how he taunted the player throughout wrath and let them fall into his trap. It this kind of story telling blizzard need to focus on. Singular chatacter instead of the big overreaching story.
    Blizzard can't never deliver this good of a story line again. You see this with the current legion story line. Wow right now only care about crafting the universe, creating a meta plot line with big bad villain that has no depth. They dont dived into character dynamics anymore like warcraft 3 did. Even Mist of pandaria have way better story line than even the current legion right now due to the political dynamics and how it effect the character like jania, vojin, thrall, garrosh, varian and anduin. Now it just world building and big threat that is meaningless. No matter how disconnects and ridiculous the horde and alliance storyline at stormheim, it was at least interesting and intriguing. Legion threat however is just typical bad guy with the same one liner "this world will burn" like yeah we heard you guys like billion time.

      XD true and in the end it all come back to him again cough cough new lore to old lore to add existence end of fall of lich king he saw "The darkness before me" to his father is Bastion Uther split light and Devos defiance kyrian to Bastion Archon system law and now he in the "Maw" good link to new lore I think I hope "Shadowlands" will be way better than legion, WOD, BFA, Catac in terms for storyline I wonder where they want to go? Since it a new lore add to old lore to revamp it. It is so good it links and yet again for 20years++ it all goes back to him lols.

      Except that both the game and all lore makes it clear that Arthas still had his free and own thoughts will when he was a DK. Frostmourne claimed his soul, and made him stop caring about everything he used to love and removed his ability to feel any kind of emotions except for anger and frustration, but it never mindcontrolled him.
      Arthas after picking up Frostmourne, was a willing champion of the LK, not a slave forced to obey through necromancy.

    A mere prince who merged with the most powerful being on Azeroth(considering Old Gods are locked away with hardly any influence), a demigod of death,. It is said that both, Arthas and ner'zhul held back from unleashing the Scourge's might because of the unstoppable force that it is, though, its a pity, if any of em did, Azeroth would have already fallen long before Wrath expansion time period.
    So as cool as Arthas was, he kept the Lich King entity from its true potential, because the lore states his true power is immesurable in essence, and also because it grows/expands infinitely, a trait no other bad guy possesses, not even Kil'jaeden, hence why he wanted his creation dead, as the LK was becoming a threat.

    • @MlokLik
      @MlokLik 7 років тому +5

      arthas's paladin part of himself kept the scourge back.

    • @Kristers_K
      @Kristers_K 7 років тому +1

      Its stated that even Nerzhul never dared to unleash the full might of the Scourge, because by doing so, it would be like an unstoppable swarm of death, destroying everytihng in their path. For that reason it must always be contained, otherwise all of Azeroth is doomed.
      Imagine insect swarms in real life,they destroy vast areas of crops and kill countless animals, and its practically impossible to stop em because of the rate they devour everything and reproduce, you kill a part of em, 5 times more will spawn and take their place.
