He created a new well of enternity for his people to use against the legion should they ever come back, and granting his people eternal life to only be imprisoned. 10,000 year later during warcraft 3, guess what, they ended up using the well Illidan created to defeat the legion. 4. He sacrificed his soul in order to save Fel Wood from complete corruption, and to take it away from legion control. He ended up succeeding, and for his sacrifice to his people he get banish to never return home. 5. While seeking more power he took up the job to kill the lich king, and would have succeeded too. If his brother didn't stop his spell. Because of this Illidan was basically sentence to death, so he was force to flee his home world into outland. 6. While bolstering his force to fight the legion in outland, the people who are only alive because of him creating a new well, sacrificing his soul, trying to save them from the lich king came to outland and murder him. 7. Bonus: The only reason the blood elf didn't get wipe out was because Illidan. The only reason the forsaken (Sylvanna included) was able to break free from the lich king control was because of Illidan. The only reason why Azeroth is still even around after Warcrath III is because of Illidan. All Illidan have ever try to do was good, and good he did, but how did everyone repay him. They imprisoned him for 10,000 year, they banished him from his home, forced him to flee azeroth, and murdered him in outland when all he was doing was building a force to fight the legion.

He pretended to have defected into the Legion and purposed directly to Sargeras himself about stealing the relic known as Dragon/Demon soul power to strengthen the Legion portal. When his real plan was to use the relic to try and close the portal instead. During the last battle during War of the Ancient Illidan was casting the spell to undo the portal, and Tyrande sensed that several something was augmenting Illidan spell. This is why the old gods was trying to stop Deathwing from taking the dragon/demon soul when he came to take it back. Ignore the rest i was on a roll, and was mixing information. Been a long time, but from what i remember no one knew that Illidan was only pretending to have defected into the Legion. This is the reason, along with creating another well, why they called him the betrayer. Correct me if i'm wrong.

If Blizzard want to do justice to the Warcraft lore they better bring his ass back, because the majority of the burning crusade lore was bullshit. Shit didn't fit, characters was off, majority of shit isn't explained, and etc. It was basically burning legion demon seeping through the dark portal. Go in, and not stop the burning legion demon, but go kill the best person against the demon, Illidan instead, for no apparent reason...(-_-)... Here we are the majority of player who were hardcore (Not casual like it is now), and knew the lore thinking... What!? *Edit:* Just to put in perspective to how bad it was killing Illidan in outland during the burning crusade for the folks who don't know the lore. If you're Horde, imagine the Horde deciding to just suddenly go kill Thrall instead during cata for no reason, and not the threat that is Deathwing. For Alliance, imagine killing Tirion for no reason during wrath, and not the threat that is the Lich King. That's how bad it was for Illidan.

I forgot about the Taretha story. By the way, you forgot to mention how Blackmoore basically owned Taretha's family and used her as a sex slave when he's drunk. Blackmoore is such a despicable character.
Yeah it's really heartbreaking in the book. There's this heart-breaking line where she tells Thrall about Blackmoore abusing her and Thrall says "What is happening to your eyes?" and she replies "These are called tears. They come when we are so sad, so soul sick, it's as if our hearts are so full of pain there's no place else for it to go. You are so innocent, Thrall. So pure. But someday you will understand." I was reading that on a crowded train and was balling my eyes out in front of dozens of people. It's really a heart-wrenching story. And then when Blackmoore throws her head at Thrall you just want to vomit. And Blackmoore somehow loves her in some disgusting way; he says something about having to get blackout drunk to be able to behead her. It's so fucked up: he's such a twisted character with a perverted sense of emotions. It especially sits unwell with me because my WoW character is almost the same model as Taretha so I kind of feel a strange sense of connection to her. By the way, part of the reason Thrall is so comfortable with Jaina is because Jaina looks like Taretha. Thrall thinks about Taretha a lot in his stories. Even in Dragon Soul he goes "Taretha, Cairn, Aggra, I will not fail you, I will not fail this world." If it weren't for Taretha's selfless sacrifice though, the orcs would still be living in concentration camps and Thrall would never have been able to help save Azeroth from Deathwing. It's like the LotR quote "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

What most of them don't care about the fact, is that Thrall has such a unique and tragic backstory, is a developed character with depth, and has never done anything without reason, a real hero in a game that rewards players for being assholes to one another.
Sindragosa's story made me tear up. Many creatures turned into Scourge did not deserve that fate. I love Arthas' story but the more I read up on stories like hers the more I realize just how far he had fallen from what he really wanted to do. I mean, she's forced to attack the raidparty there and defend the lich king and her children and even herself got killed twice in that manner. sad story.
i think the arthas story hit me in the heart the most because i remember playing warcraft 3 as a kid and just seeing his story and seeing his death in WotLK just hit me hard.
the tragic story of the creation of the Defias. The "Defias" started out as the masons that rebuilt Stormwind after it was destroyed during the first war. The Stormwind city fathers didn't want to pay the ,masons what they owed them, and so outlawed the masons. When the players do the Dead Mines dungeon, they are, in effect, complicit in the murder of men whom just want to be paid what they are owed. Blizzard doesn't want players to think about what they are doing. If the players think, then there is no war.
As a wow-player who played the old strategy games and been on WOW since release, I know that this clip was suppose to answer a lot of questions/doubts about the Warcraft lore. But after seeing it, I think it raises a lot more questions than it answers. -For example: "What the hell am I doing with my life?", "How can I spend my time better or at least different than playing WOW?", "How can I sell or give away my char and items?", "Do I need extra sunblock when going outside for the first time in a long time?", "How's girls these days?" etc.
One I would add to the list is Lanathel, known to players as Blood Queen Lanathel in Icecrown Citadel. She wielded Quel'delar when Kael'thas and Illidan tried to stop Arthas from reaching the peak. Arthas personally hunted her and Kael'thas' other lieutenants down and turned them into the Blood Princes and their troops into the San'Layn or Darkfallen.
Great video! Arthas' story is truly very tragic and interesting one. It's the best one so far in WoW universe. Others are also great... but... Arthas is the number one, always. :)

I read Lord of the Clans, the story of Thrall's rise from a slave to becoming Warchief of the Horde. The moment where Blackmoore threw Taretha's head at Thrall was heartbreaking. Thrall remembers a moment where Taretha is crying and asks why, and explains to Thrall what emotional pain is. At that moment, tears are flowing uncontrollably from Thrall's eyes, and he screams in rage at Blackmoore, causing a thunderclap that rattled him off his feet.
Great stuff - first video of your's I have watched. Can I suggest you do something to make it more obvious that you are moving to a different story? Sometimes they blend into each other too well.
A small cut between each story would have been nice, kinda confusing when listening and working in another tab at the same time. But great video furthermore, love your work!
FOR THE LICH KING!! It totally made sense that the lich king was number one. He was turned into a monster that desecrated the dead and stole souls against his will. Even though it wasn't Arthas' s choice to become the lich king, he still was sent to hell.

I believe it's wrong to call The lich king Arthas. Ner'zul had him under his control. Which most of you already know, meaning that Arthas is not completly in control.
I readed Thrall The Twilight of Aspects. There was a weird timeline where Arthas didnt become Lich King, he married Jaina Proudmoore and they had a child, Prince Uther.
I always thought when he said "I will break you as I broke him" He meant Arthas as him and it's actually Yogg Saron talking through Arthas, but that's very flawed.

Nope, when arthas put on the helmet he saw a small sickly child representing his purity and ner'zhul urging him to kill the boy, arthas killed the boy showing that he is now truly evil then killed ner'zhul giving him all the power.
No, by this time Ner'zhul is long gone, and Arthas is the new Lich King. He then attempts to break Bolvar; you hear it at the very start of ICC. You need to read up on your lore; or play WC3: TFT.
Broxigar didn’t just go down in a blaze of glory but he more or less directly caused the first defeat of the legion. Not only did he buy time but by striking Sargaras he managed to distract him. Although momentary he still managed to take his attention away from maintaining the portal for a few crucial moments which allowed Malfurion and Illiden to close it on him.
That moment when Blackmore throws sweet Taretha's head infront of Thrall is one of the strongest moments in the books. Damn, Thrall got so pissed that even Grommash was suprised and uncertain of him... Taretha was so sweet and kind... F*ck you Blackmore!!
Just a nitpick here. Taretha isn't some friend of Thrall. When Blackmoore found Thrall, he tried to feed him meat, because humans believed orcs were pure carnivores and barely better than animals. Taretha, a child herself, noticed that the infant Thrall has no teeth, and suggested he needed milk. A few years after that, it became her responsibility to teach him to read and write. She was in essence his big sister and one of the reasons that Thrall never saw the Alliance as monsters, just misguided. Without her, there would be no Horde, and the Legion would have taken Azeroth over a decade ago.

Hakkar is a demigod not a god...also you did not specifically state that Sindragosa is Malygos' wife nor that she died with nothing but the promise of vengeance against all living including her lover burdening her soul,fact that might have contributed to some extent to her life in undeath. Also after defeating the nerubians the Lich King adopted their architecture due to the fact that it was so amazing and well made. Very nice video overall but these are some things you could have added in order to explain a bit more of what it's curently in-game.I would've loved to hear those back when i was a lore noob :).Keep it up.
Honestly, I think there are two lores worthy of at least honorable mention: the story of Highlord Darion Mograine, and the story of Payne, Jaina's Night Elf protector. Mograine is pretty obvious, considering how he became a Death Knight. But Payne is less known, and my understanding is that something happened that made her so loyal to Jaina and her protection that even when the sorceress gave her leave to even just take a break to visit home, Payne refused to leave her side. That loyalty led to her death when Hellscream bombed Theramore, but even in death her expression was of defiance against those that threatened her charge.
Just to clarify with Broxigar’s story, it wasn’t merely cool that he managed to nick the foot of Sargeras, but it was just enough to distract Sargeras for a single moment which is all they needed to close the portal on him. If he hadn’t managed to distract Sargeras Azeroth would have been taken by the legion 10,000 years before any of our games took place. It’s about as epic an ending as any character has had.
It was originally called the dragon soul when it was created, but then when it was wielded for evil by death wing they started calling it the demon soul instead (or something like that). Both accurately refer to the same item
Dragon Soul was its original name, given by Neltharion, but that name was only used during the War of the Ancients and only at the beggining. Due to the damage and suffering it has brought, in the ancient past and around the Second War, as well as all the evil it carried within, it was later reffered to as the "Demon Soul". And there were demonic essences in that disc as well, not just dragons, cause Deathwing "tested" it on at least one of the Eredar warlocks ;) So both are correct but "Dragon soul" is outdated ;p
Fun fact: in 2:33 you can see Garrona with two normal daggers. After Legion, she can be seen in ulduar weilding the kingslayers, the assassination rogue artifact.
just a little feedback, it might be useful to add some pause and a 1, 2, 3 screen or just say "one", etc. I'm one of those people that listens to videos while playing, or putting them on my send monitor, so it gets a bit confusing if you just run from one story into a next. Besides from that, i like your videos :)! keep up the good work!

The other fact about Broxigar: ever since he was the only survivor of a battle in which all of his comrades died he felt guilt and wanted to die in battle. I guess dying to none other than Sargeras was enough to redeem himself.

As for number 9... I can't remember where or by who, but I read a blue post saying that there was a connection between Yogg'saron and the Scourge that blizzard in hindsight felt they didn't convey nearly well enough for players to grasp. I guess they wanted the clues to be obscure, but not nearly as obscure as what they ended up being. I've got my fingers crossed that when they do an expansion featuring Bolvar again they'll expand further on that. Or at least tell us what was up there.
I (personally) disagree with number four. Hell, the FOUNDING of the Scarlet Crusade is more sad than Lillian's story. However, I must admit this might be slightly biased as I am not a huge fan of the Forsaken, Lillian appears to be far too OP and she helped in the destruction of my favorite antagonistic faction of all time. Although, one is so unbelievably accurate (again, in my opinion). Rest in peace, Arthas.

my personal opinion of the most sad story what soo ever is durotan, when his mother lays in a deep sleep and the rest of the clan has left to find the clethoofs that wander during the winter. but durotan stays with her and gets ambushed by black wolves which ends up with him going berserk killing everything that moves, which sadly, includes his own wolf (forgot name). from there he wears his wolves fur as a reminder of what he has done and as respect of the loyalty and bravery of his dear companion
Quick Question, when you start the Forsaken starting zone, there is one NPC there that says "I was an Orc... he cut both my hands off, and left me to die..." Could this actualy be Durotan, since both his and the Forsaken story match 100% ?

Illidan, never once ever betrayed anyone other than the Legion. I don't even know where you got greed from. He was mad for more power, not greedy, and never once during his quest for more power did he ever screwed over his allies. They however did screw him over, and never him screwing them over.
Example: Illidan basically saved the entire blood elf (High elf at the time) race from dying after Arthas destroyed the SunWell, because of their reliance on a source of power. He taught them how to suck mana from demon. (Which can be use on other creature as well) This changed the blood elf eyes from originally blue to the green everyone knows in the game. This technique was from Illidan, and it kept the entire race alive. How did they repay him? Their King betrayed Illidan, and his own people. The majority of blood elf themselves betrayed Illidan and helped the horde in killing (Their fucking SAVIOR!!!) him.
If Blizzard want to do justice to the Warcraft lore they better bring his ass back, because the majority of the burning crusade lore was bullshit. Shit didn't fit, characters was off, majority of shit isn't explained, and etc.
It was basically burning legion demon seeping through the dark portal. Go in, and not stop the burning legion demon, but go kill the best person against the demon, Illidan instead, for no apparent reason...(-_-)... Here we are the majority of player who were hardcore (Not casual like it is now), and knew the lore thinking... What!?
*Edit:* Just to put in perspective to how bad it was killing Illidan in outland during the burning crusade for the folks who don't know the lore. If you're Horde, imagine the Horde deciding to just suddenly go kill Thrall instead during cata for no reason, and not the threat that is Deathwing. For Alliance, imagine killing Tirion for no reason during wrath, and not the threat that is the Lich King. That's how bad it was for Illidan.
What about the Draenei that willingly gave up their lives and were blessed to die, in order to convince the orcs that the Draenei people were extinct? That's sad, really sad. Men, women and children, blessed to die by the prophet.

And as for the trolls, I think it's kinda fucked up that they had to deal with famine, starvation, and terror and because of this they had to resort to worshiping a sadistic god which again, led to a civil war between their empire directly following their state of agony. But hey! To each their own. I just wanted to explain why I placed them on this list.

Don't know about you, but Borxigar's story isn't really tragic. Brox went out like a fucking boss and had a death that would be the envy of many orcs.
It was also the death he was searching for. The Saurfang brothers both always wanted to die in battle but nobody could beat them in honorable combat. It's why when Varok Saurfang was the orc racial leader the achievement for killing him doesn't say you killed him.

Yeah it's really heartbreaking in the book. There's this heart-breaking line where she tells Thrall about Blackmoore abusing her and Thrall says "What is happening to your eyes?" and she replies "These are called tears. They come when we are so sad, so soul sick, it's as if our hearts are so full of pain there's no place else for it to go. You are so innocent, Thrall. So pure. But someday you will understand." I was reading that on a crowded train and was balling my eyes out in front of dozens of people. It's really a heart-wrenching story. And then when Blackmoore throws her head at Thrall you just want to vomit. And Blackmoore somehow loves her in some disgusting way; he says something about having to get blackout drunk to be able to behead her. It's so fucked up: he's such a twisted character with a perverted sense of emotions. It especially sits unwell with me because my WoW character is almost the same model as Taretha so I kind of feel a strange sense of connection to her. By the way, part of the reason Thrall is so comfortable with Jaina is because Jaina looks like Taretha. Thrall thinks about Taretha a lot in his stories. Even in Dragon Soul he goes "Taretha, Cairn, Aggra, I will not fail you, I will not fail this world." If it weren't for Taretha's selfless sacrifice though, the orcs would still be living in concentration camps and Thrall would never have been able to help save Azeroth from Deathwing. It's like the LotR quote "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

What most of them don't care about the fact, is that Thrall has such a unique and tragic backstory, is a developed character with depth, and has never done anything without reason, a real hero in a game that rewards players for being assholes to one another.

Sindragosa's story made me tear up. Many creatures turned into Scourge did not deserve that fate. I love Arthas' story but the more I read up on stories like hers the more I realize just how far he had fallen from what he really wanted to do. the tragic story of the creation of the Defias. The "Defias" started out as the masons that rebuilt Stormwind after it was destroyed during the first war. The Stormwind city fathers didn't want to pay the ,masons what they owed them, and so outlawed the masons. When the players do the Dead Mines dungeon, they are, in effect, complicit in the murder of men whom just want to be paid what they are owed. Blizzard doesn't want players to think about what they are doing. If the players think, then there is no war.

As a wow-player who played the old strategy games and been on WOW since release, I know that this clip was suppose to answer a lot of questions/doubts about the Warcraft lore. But after seeing it, I think it raises a lot more questions than it answers. -For example: "What the hell am I doing with my life?", "How can I spend my time better or at least different than playing WOW?", "How can I sell or give away my char and items?", "Do I need extra sunblock when going outside for the first time in a long time?", "How's girls these days?" etc.

One I would add to the list is Lanathel, known to players as Blood Queen Lanathel in Icecrown Citadel. She wielded Quel'delar when Kael'thas and Illidan tried to stop Arthas from reaching the peak. Arthas personally hunted her and Kael'thas' other lieutenants down and turned them into the Blood Princes and their troops into the San'Layn or Darkfallen.
Great video! Arthas' story is truly very tragic and interesting one. It's the best one so far in WoW universe. Others are also great... but... Arthas is the number one, always. :)

I read Lord of the Clans, the story of Thrall's rise from a slave to becoming Warchief of the Horde. The moment where Blackmoore threw Taretha's head at Thrall was heartbreaking. Thrall remembers a moment where Taretha is crying and asks why, and explains to Thrall what emotional pain is. At that moment, tears are flowing uncontrollably from Thrall's eyes, and he screams in rage at Blackmoore, causing a thunderclap that rattled him off his feet.
I think Uther the Lightbringer deserved a mention in there come on.

FOR THE LICH KING!! It totally made sense that the lich king was number one. He was turned into a monster that desecrated the dead and stole souls against his will. Even though it wasn't Arthas' s choice to become the lich king, he still was sent to hell.

Plus in Wotlk, it was said that the undead are immune to the influence of Yogg-Saron because they had no individual will and their wills were that of the Lich king who himself was immune to it for some reason. That is why the scourge could use so much Saronite with complete impunity. Normally, anyone who handles it starts falling victim to the whispers of the old god.

Not only did he buy time but by striking Sargaras he managed to distract him. Although momentary he still managed to take his attention away from maintaining the portal for a few crucial moments which allowed Malfurion and Illiden to close it on him.

That moment when Blackmore throws sweet Taretha's head infront of Thrall is one of the strongest moments in the books. Damn, Thrall got so pissed that even Grommash was suprised and uncertain of him... Taretha was so sweet and kind... F*ck you Blackmore!!

Just a nitpick here. Taretha isn't some friend of Thrall. When Blackmoore found Thrall, he tried to feed him meat, because humans believed orcs were pure carnivores and barely better than animals. Taretha, a child herself, noticed that the infant Thrall has no teeth, and suggested he needed milk. A few years after that, it became her responsibility to teach him to read and write.
She was in essence his big sister and one of the reasons that Thrall never saw the Alliance as monsters, just misguided.
Without her, there would be no Horde, and the Legion would have taken Azeroth over a decade ago.

"Eventually he met a human woman named Taretha". He met Taretha on day one of his life in captivity. She was the daughter in the family that raised him as an infant. They were literally friends her entire life except for the few years before Thrall came into the picture.
Thrall should have been number 1. Now if Arthas lost Jaina then he should be number 1.
Hakkar is a demigod not a god...also you did not specifically state that Sindragosa is Malygos' wife nor that she died with nothing but the promise of vengeance against all living including her lover burdening her soul,fact that might have contributed to some extent to her life in undeath.
Also after defeating the nerubians the Lich King adopted their architecture due to the fact that it was so amazing and well made.
Very nice video overall but these are some things you could have added in order to explain a bit more of what it's curently in-game.I would've loved to hear those back when i was a lore noob :).Keep it up.

Honestly, I think there are two lores worthy of at least honorable mention: the story of Highlord Darion Mograine, and the story of Payne, Jaina's Night Elf protector. Mograine is pretty obvious, considering how he became a Death Knight. But Payne is less known, and my understanding is that something happened that made her so loyal to Jaina and her protection that even when the sorceress gave her leave to even just take a break to visit home, Payne refused to leave her side. That loyalty led to her death when Hellscream bombed Theramore, but even in death her expression was of defiance against those that threatened her charge.

Just to clarify with Broxigar’s story, it wasn’t merely cool that he managed to nick the foot of Sargeras, but it was just enough to distract Sargeras for a single moment which is all they needed to close the portal on him.
If he hadn’t managed to distract Sargeras Azeroth would have been taken by the legion 10,000 years before any of our games took place. It’s about as epic an ending as any character has had.

It was originally called the dragon soul when it was created, but then when it was wielded for evil by death wing they started calling it the demon soul instead (or something like that). Both accurately refer to the same item
Dragon Soul was its original name, given by Neltharion, but that name was only used during the War of the Ancients and only at the beggining. Due to the damage and suffering it has brought, in the ancient past and around the Second War, as well as all the evil it carried within, it was later reffered to as the "Demon Soul". And there were demonic essences in that disc as well, not just dragons, cause Deathwing "tested" it on at least one of the Eredar warlocks ;) So both are correct but "Dragon soul" is outdated ;p
Fun fact: in 2:33 you can see Garrona with two normal daggers. After Legion, she can be seen in ulduar weilding the kingslayers, the assassination rogue artifact.

The other fact about Broxigar: ever since he was the only survivor of a battle in which all of his comrades died he felt guilt and wanted to die in battle. I guess dying to none other than Sargeras was enough to redeem himself.

As for number 9... I can't remember where or by who, but I read a blue post saying that there was a connection between Yogg'saron and the Scourge that blizzard in hindsight felt they didn't convey nearly well enough for players to grasp. I guess they wanted the clues to be obscure, but not nearly as obscure as what they ended up being. I've got my fingers crossed that when they do an expansion featuring Bolvar again they'll expand further on that. Or at least tell us what was up there.

I (personally) disagree with number four. Hell, the FOUNDING of the Scarlet Crusade is more sad than Lillian's story. However, I must admit this might be slightly biased as I am not a huge fan of the Forsaken, Lillian appears to be far too OP and she helped in the destruction of my favorite antagonistic faction of all time. Although, one is so unbelievably accurate (again, in my opinion). Rest in peace, Arthas.

my personal opinion of the most sad story what soo ever is durotan, when his mother lays in a deep sleep and the rest of the clan has left to find the clethoofs that wander during the winter. but durotan stays with her and gets ambushed by black wolves which ends up with him going berserk killing everything that moves, which sadly, includes his own wolf (forgot name). from there he wears his wolves fur as a reminder of what he has done and as respect of the loyalty and bravery of his dear companion
when you listen to the "arthas my son" song from wc3 and remember the story its actually so sad
