The people were already infected, dead, and would’ve spread... would you have preferred he left them there to overrun the wild life, and neighboring settlements? Sargeras was the real overal big baddie, and they kind of fucked that whole thing all up pretty badly imho. If you knew anything about the books or the "deeper lore" then Sargeras was the start of everything. Arthas i still agree has the best story arch of them all and is still my favorite Last final boss. Once WotLk was does the only other expansion that would of made sense is Legion coming straight back into Azeroth for the final killing blow. The rest of the xpacs could of focused on infighting and horde vs alliance but they did it backwards.

Arthas did a lot of things wrong but people here in this comment section/Blizzard have no idea about conducting warfare. If your city became infested with flesh eating monsters suddenly your military will burn your city down in order to save what is left of the nation/state. The plague has nothing in common with COVID in case anyone want to bring it up which serves no purpose because you won't turn into a cannibal by it - You could possible spread it further but you won't tear someone face off with your teeth because of it.
I was disappointed with DesignerDave response to this video because it showed me that even back in Blizzard golden days. Blizzard sucked at storytelling. "Arthas is evil because he has evil traits!" I thought he went insane because he faught his own people as they became undead. I can't say for his holy light abilites because what we see in WoW is gameplay - and gameplay is not always lore. I was hoping for more depths for Arthas instead of what DesignerDave says in his video but if that was what Blizzard intended than I have given them too much praise than in my opinion they deserve.

  • @hungry-ghost

Thank you for saying this and telling his whole story.
I remember reading The Rise of the Lich King and seeing exactly the points that led to him becoming the Lich King. It was painful to read, knowing what will happen.
I was surprised by Uther in the pre Shadowlands videos, I thought he should know, he was Arthas' teacher, he knew what he was like.
I hope Blizz didn't get rid of Arthas as it looks now. He deserves better than being thrown into the Maw.
Illidan got his redemption, so why not at least let Arthas rest peacefully (and not reduce him to evil villain only).

  • @Shotgunner01
    @Shotgunner01 2 місяці тому +1

From my perspective turning point for Arthas wasn't Stratholme but the moment when he burned ships sent by Lordaeron and betraying mercenaries. That's when he became evil. Taking Frostmourne only sealed the deal. Let's start with Stratholme. On the one hand you have healthy army with capable leaders (Uther, Jaina and Arthas) while on the other infected civilians who will turn into mindless zombies and slaves to the Lich King. What do you do? What ever you do it will not be nice. If you don't kill them they'll become undead, if you kill them you can at least stop the infection from spreading through the rest of the state. So, again from my point, Arthas made brave decision only future king would be capable of. He decided to stop zombie apocalypse from spreading to other parts of his country. However you look it those people would be dead. And what did Uther and Jaina do? They fled as cowards and traitors they are. Instead of supporting their future king they decided to play humanists when it was not place or time. If they supported him Lordaeron might be saved, Arthas might never pick Frostmourne and BL might never entered into Azeroth.

Tbh the sword would simply constantly whisper to him the next step of the ways constantly as a soft ''mind control'' effect as
    1) At this point he already F up too badly between stratholme, Muradin, Many of his mens, lingering in northrend for months after malganis death.. losing his mind as the sword kept whispering to him.. (it canon) Leading to his own father death
    2) Due due to point one + Lost his touch with the light + No more purpose as well..point 1 again
slowly the whispers become the only things that prolly connected him to the reality.. At this point you got two choices.. letting yourself be killed and spend eternity in the abyss (like Sylvanas been and was like Ooooh hell noooo) or try to thrive as what you became... choice clear to me at this point
Once he put the helm on it simply that his soul now become one with all the previous lich kings.. so you basicaly fighting a weird and constant schizophrenia while trying to keep the scourge under control while your other personalities might want to do something totaly different than you with your power/army/body etc...
I think by Bfa Sylvanas kinda understood Arthas logic and I have a good theory that we might be surprised to find Arthas soul way more important than we expect in Shadowlands... This is where Sylvanas ''moraly grey'' story will unfold and be understandable by peoples who still dont get it yet
(spoiler... There is no redemption for anyone who been raised by ''the lich king power''.. their soul has been fed to something and no matter how virtuous you could be.. in the end you you ''die'' for good= constant void and nothingness as your SOUL no longer exist.. sylvanas wish to end this and trust me many things she did is simply to force some other races to understand wasup after you die that way as NO ONE SINCE VANILLA EVER LISTENED TO HER POINTING OUT SHE CANT MORALY SUBSTAIN HER PEOPLES BUUUUT IF SHE DOSENT SHE/THE HORDE LOSE THEM...
yet thrall was like: K cool we will find a solution... lata. Never did anything
By wotlk she goes well ill raise some already dead body thrall aint doing nothing to find a good solution we cant agree on.. Of course garrosh go BRRRR on her
She try to link back to her past with her sister at garrosh trial (ok in a weird sociopath way but heey she kinda.. a banshee.. you prolly aint the most joyful thing on azeroth). Her sister turn her back then
Alleria pretty much want her dead and judge her for her state even if HERSELF CHOSE TO BE VOID INFECTED (Sylvanas did not chose to lose her soul and be forced to share a world with the livings you know?)
See the pattern.. at this point she just like Arthas even tho she resisted the whispers.. broke free.. did her best to share azeroth with the livings.. where she is now? nobody ever trusted her (even before teldrasil let face it).. half of followers kinda want a final death (AND SO DOES SHE.. but again.. there is no afterlife for the damneds).. She will never be able to be ''moraly on part with the livings'' in her way just to keep the ''forsakens'' relevant on the long term... Just like Arthas she went F this Ill do things the damneds ways.. many will not understand but it the only thing the damneds can do in the end..

Arthas' story is absolutely amazing. One MAJOR point of Stratholme that seems to be never touched on is that it did not leave Arthas in good mental health. The purging of stratholme is when Arthas started on the path which leads to him becoming the Lich King. However, it's not the act of the purge itself. Instead it is how the purge affected Arthas and brought him into a terrible mental state. It is a traumatizing action and that is what made Arthas obsessed with Malganis and susceptible to Frostmourne in Northrend.

Arthas is one of my favourite character from WCIII. I remember when I played it as a kid with my father, who, after he culled Strathlome, picked up the runeblade and killed his father, was quite shocked at the story progression. He didn't want to play further, but I pressed on, meeting charscters like Thrall, Grom, Cairne, Malfurion, Illidan and Tyrande. All of them helped bring the story of Azeroth together, and show how little did my boy Arthas mean in all of that. And after taking to the fanfics, the realisation sank in. Arthas has fallen, Lorderon was in ruins, and Jaina was probably still tormenting herself because she thought that she could have tried to stop him, talk him out of it or something, and yet instead she fled.

no he wasn't. He was unknowingly controlled by Yogg-Saron. What does the spirit of Terenas Menethil say to him? "No King rules forever my son". One of Yogg's voice lines is "No King rules forever, only death is eternal". When you pull him he also calls himself the "God of Death": a line which they foreshadowed in the patch trailer (Varian "may this death-god take you all"), so it has to be important. Why would Yogg say that? How could that possibly be true? Because, Kil'jaeden made one fatal error when he created the Lich King. He failed to realize that Saronite is the blood of Yogg-Saron. That Yogg can influence anyone who is in the vicinity of it. Icecrown is made almost entirely out of Saronite.
Ask yourself. After the fight with Arthas, we were dead. We didn't need to run back to our bodies. Terenas Menethil resurrects us. HOW???? The number of characters capable of true resurrection canonically can be counted on one hand. Terenas Menethil wasn't even a paladin or any kind of magic-user. It's one thing to think Uther's spirit might have been capable of that, but Terenas? But Yogg-Saron, would certainly be. Yogg-Saron was simply using the guise of Terenas' spirit to influence Arthas.
Also ask yourself this: why did Yogg-Saron break free when he did? Why scare the crap out of Brann Bronzebeard? He could have just let the dwarf document Ulduar. At any normal time, he probably would have. But we were about to assault Icecrown when it was unprepared. Yogg needed to make a distraction. He just didn't think we'd be able to free the Keepers. The original plan wasn't for the Lich King to kill us himself atop Icecrown. It was for Yogg-Saron to kill us in Ulduar, where the Lich King could come and raise us at his leisure. When Tirion managed to break Frostmourne, Yogg-Saron decided we were of more use fully alive than undead.
Note that it is also "Terenas" who says that there must always be a Lich King. Bullshit. He was just trying to gain control over Tirion, because he'd just screwed up the plans. Then Bolvar came by and ruined everything. Just imagine if Bolvar hated you AND you were stuck with him forever. Yeah, even Old Gods have limits. Yogg let Sylvanas win that fight.

In the 1st WC3 undead mission Arthas reflects on how he's "damned everyone and everything" he ever cared for and yet felt "no remorse no shame no pity" Tichondrius replies saying Frostmourne has the power to steal souls and "[Arthas's soul] was the first one it claimed".
This suggests that when Arthas picked up frostmourne his soul was trapped in the runeblade, while his body and mind became slaves to the will of the Lich King like any other death knight. So I never blamed Arthas for any of his undead actions.

Seriously, why do this as an April Fools? I actually do see him as a fallen force for good. Imagine, every single one of you, that the people that you have sworn to defend with the cost of your life are transforming into creatures whose sole drive is to destroy and corrupt. What the hell would you do? Would you not be willing to strike them down in order to safeguard those that can still be saved? Arthas doubting himself and losing his ability to use the Light is testament to the fact that he was merely fighting desperately to hold on to a slither of hope that he would save his people. And that's a pretty damn human trait in my opinion.

Couldn't he have just released the Scourge anyway, then raise all of the notably strong people (or just everyone), including the would-be champions, and then just..... Win by default?
Even if you say "well the Scourge would have suffered losses" .... He could have just raised those back again too... And it's not like everyone can just cower in Light's Hope forever. Eventually they're just going to be starved out and die-- you don't even have to assault the place, just siege it into the ground.

Right so arthas soul went into Frostmourne. It's like in Supernatural Season 6 where Sam has no soul, the idea is that things like compassion, empathy, and love come from your soul. Without the soul you're left with the neutral and negative aspects of your personality leaving a net negative. It was his soulless personality that clashed with the Nerzhul, and then became the dominant personality in the lich King persona. BUT since he was the lich King and had access to the sword and thus the souls his good soul had a small tether to try and abate him. Sensing this he cut out his heart, maybe because it represented his the memories of before, the destruction of this weekend him because our current self is the culmination of everything in our live up to that point (Illidan: "I AM my scars"). When the sword broke his soul went back to his body and he's like 'ugh, that fucking sucked' but he still goes to hell or whatever because betraying those mercenaries was fucking evil and he DID still have his soul at that point.

You missed an important point in the Arthas novel where we learn that during the invasion of Quel'thalas he rallied his undead forces with the same affection he did with his human forces in life.
Later we see him think of the undead who weren't freed from Ner'zhuls grasp as his true subjects.
Basically what I'm thinking is that Arthas had simply just gone insane and began believing that him turning people undead made him the good guy. He never thought what he was doing a bad thing.

    MASSIVE speculation incomming:
It could be that Arthas didn't kill everyone because the good side of him saw himself as the guardian between the Legion and the living people on Azeroth
The reason why he killed the strongest people, was to have an army to both stand with him against the Legion AND to deter future heroes from challenging him.
In the end he didn't want a massive undead hivemind army, he just wanted what he would need, and the rest should live on as humans still.
Im not saying that this is what Lich King Arthas thought, but it might be what Arthas Arthas believed while 'mindcontrolled'. Then, when he was defeated, he realized that he was just another zLegion or just how horrible what he did was. I don't know, just speculation

the undead aren't a hivemind. they are not the zerg. individual necromancers, liches, banshees and acolytes do have individual minds. and even so does the simplest undead minions like skeletons, ghouls and abominations should Arthas's power be drained, just like it happens in the frozen throne campaign, however the simpler minions seem to just collapse and 'die' when that happens if no other being capable of harnessing control over undead is nearby (like say, a dreadlord or three) as opposed to the more powerful beings like necromancers (whom are actually not really undead, but living humans that have dedicated their lives to the scourge, presumably in hopes to gain immortality - like what happened to Kel'Thuzad).

Arthas has one of the best character arcs that you actually witness and play through. That's what makes it so good. It's a very tragic arc, much like Darth Vader.
Every time I replay Warcraft 3 and see his arc, I'm immediately reminded of Anakin Skywalker.
They both cared so much about protecting their loved ones, that they lost sight and made decisions out of pure emotion and desperation.
Both ended up being the ultimate bad asses in their respective universe. What makes it so good is that both stories are relatable. You can see they wanted the best for the ones they swore to protect, only to turn and kill them all in the end.

Arthas was a man who wanted to do anything to stop teh scourge n went to great lengths to basically keep his people safe. But ended up being corrupted and becoming the thing he didn't want to be, and had no way to rebel against what he had become but to embrace it.
P.S Theres more evidence that Frostmourne itself is what caused it all cuz when you have Arthas the Death knight theres a voice line where he says "Frostmourne hungers" or something to the lines of that. Basically implying Frostmourne has to devour I guess souls for power. And thats why he was killing people. My theory is that once its thirst got satisfied so to say, he was more so able to keep from just slaughtering everything. N that was the best he could do given how far he had been corrupted.

One by one, he gave every single one of the non-orc races a reason to despise him and turn against him in the end. Stratholme was pivotal in the sense that he only had a small timeframe to make a hasty decision: let his people turn into the undead and suffer, or mercy kill them to save them from the eternal agony of undeath. I consider the Lich King a combination of Arthas + Ner’zhul, with Ner’zhul being the more dominant personality. So when people refer to the Lich King as Arthas, it makes me uneasy. I agree that the Culling of Stratholme was tragic but necessary, but none of his other actions were justified. He didn't go after Mal'ganis to save his kingdom; he did it for revenge. When Terenas commanded that the army return home, Arthas burned the fleet and blamed it on the mercenaries he hired. He ignored Muradin's warning about Frostmourne, and didn't even bat an eye when he was (seemingly) killed. Then he murdered his own father and became the Lich King's Champion, and eventually the Lich King himself.
