For what it's worth, I can sit and listen to Led Zeppelin these days and thoroughly enjoy the music while sitting perfectly still and not indulging in many facial expressions. Of course, I'm an old man now. I admit, however, that even during my youth, seeing classic bands like Yes, Jethro Tull and Ten Years After perform live, I wasn't one of the audience members who tended to express their appreciation in an intensely physical way. That changed a bit over time, and when one was standing four feet from the stage it was quite different from being located toward the back of the auditorium, possibly sitting in a balcony. Also, I was subject to moodiness in my youth, and sometimes a dark mood adversely affected my appreciation of the band more than the band affected (lifted) my mood. Which was too bad, but concerts weren't as expensive to attend, back in the day. I can make some of that up to myself and the bands by watching videos on UA-cam, and vicariously via the consternation and joy of reactors.
As Helene Spaulding mentioned, this was a different time, as well as culture; this was filmed at a college in Denmark and they originally did have chairs around for the audience, however, it got in the way of the cameras. In some locations, it was a thing of courtesy not to be up and all over the place. For example, if I recall, Jimmy said that in the early days of touring Japan, the audience all waited until a song was over before politely clapping. It wasn't that they weren't engaged, but that's what their societal norms of the time dictated, so not their fault. This entire Danmark concert of approximately a half hour had nothing but songs from the first album, if you want to do more. The next filmed concert we have is from Royal Albert Hall but it contains songs from their first and second album, so you'd have to do a bit of cherry picking to pull only ones from the first album. Saying that, please don't think that if you do a song from one concert that you couldn't or shouldn't do the same song but from a different concert because they never played a song the same way twice and there will be marked differences between the two. Carry on!
Thank you deeply for the brilliant comment. Good to get some back story to these live shows. Just more for me to soak up coming from different generations and seeing the differences. Fascinating
You have to understand that Zeppelin was not a huge band yet here. This was Denmark. The young people there were hearing the heaviest music they had ever come across and many were dazed…like deer in the headlights dazed. Some probably don’t like it. Hell, when I first listened to the album , I was dazed myself. Also, back then, people were expected to stay seated. Standing up was considered rude to the people behind you. Different etiquette altogether. It was several years after this that getting up and dancing etc was common in concerts. There are even audio clips of Robert asking people to please sit down. He even worked the request into a lyric as the band was playing. How clever is that? 😁

Perhaps. I think more dumbfounded. Dazed and confused, if you like. Brand new sound….heavy….screaming vocals. Some no doubt didn’t like it…it was too much for them. And Zeppelin wasn’t known…so didn’t have the aura of legend about them as they would later. So I don’t know that awe is what we see on their faces.
