On the band's name, before LZ was formed, Jimmy wanted to form a super group with Jeff Beck and the rhythm section from "The Who"! The idea was laughed at and one of them said the new band would go down like a lead balloon, the other one said Zeppelin (the largest type of balloon known at the time, we call them Blimps in the US) ... The name came from the German family that invented the airship "Von Zeppelin"? When Jimmy had the eventual members lined up for the new band, they had contractual obligations left to fulfill from his previous band, "The Yardbirds", so they travelled to Scandanavia together calling themselves "The New Yardbirds". When a former member of the Yardbirds threatened legal action, Jimmy, remembering the incident with Keith Moon and John Entwistle, proposed LZ to his new mates, and it was agreed. They changed the spelling of Lead to Led, so people wouldn't mispronounce the first word, and LZ was born! Now I could be off on a detail here or there, but this is the general consensus of how it all came about!
Thank you John for this LZ name history. Sounds totally plausible. Added a boost to my already love & admiration of the greatest Rock Band from that Era 🎵❗
A "Zepplin" is like a blimp, in that they both are lighter-than-air flying vehicles filled with gas, but a blimp is just a huge bag of gas with the compartment for passengers suspended from the outside. A Zeppelin is a "dirigible" rather than a blimp. It is constructed of a rigid frame, and keeps its shape even when there's no gas inside; a blimp will deflate if the gas is removed - it doesn't have a ridige support structure. The passenger compartments in a Zeppelin are contained inside the rigid structure, and the gas is contained in large cells located inside the structure as well. The crazy thing about Zeppelins is that the gas used in them was hydrogen, which is extremely flammable. Any light-than-air vehicles today (like the Goodyear Blimp) are filled with non-flammable helium. I think there was a huge political fight about this back in the 1920-1930s. The only source for lots of Helium at the time was the US, and the US refused to sell it to Germany, because the US didn't want Germany to use the Zeppelins for making war.
ANY live show by this band...MSG 1973 (Stairway to Heaven/Since I've Been Loving You); Earls Court 1975 (In My Time of Dying); Knebworth '79 (Kashmir) - you watch any one song from each of these shows and you WILL UNDERSTAND....ONLY rock group whose members are recognized to be in top 5 of each category (front man, lead guitar, bass, drums) for members of a rock band...and for the most part, JUST THESE GUYS PLAYED on every song studio or live (Battle of Evermore one exception) and yet they made all these incredible sounds...masters of rock!!
You are seeing them live in Denmark on tv 1969. They formed in late 68'. Guitarist 🎸 Jimmy Page uses a violin or cello bow on the Fender Telecaster here. My friend . You will never see another band this good. These guys scared themselves first time they ever played. They stopped after about 25 seconds and looked at each other..not believing how well they played together Greatest Drummer in Rock and Roll history John Henry Bonham . Greatest front man Robert Plant. Such a unique sounding voice. Great Blues singer. .John Paul Jones on Bass / Keyboards was a session player like founder Jimmy Page .....two trained pros. . JPJ is able to MASTERFULLY play Bass Acoustic Guitars Keyboards Organ. Anything Jimmy Page the lead guitarist created this band .....hes a mad scientist One of the very top guitarists in Rock history Hes a quiet kind shy type but was destined to create these masterpieces. Try In My Time of Dying
Well put Peter ❗ Great to pass on knowledge about THIS BAND to these young Reactors. They are so turned on by real musicianship. Thanks for your narration.
Oh I saw them in 84 small gig in Nottingham UK ( right place right time , I’m an Aussie) they are still hands down the BEST I saw. I’m 55 now seen every big band there is to see.
"I really like that guitar work. That man's killin' it." That's Jimmy Page. Only the greatest guitarist who ever lived. He invented new ways to play the instrument the way a Chess grandmaster creates new Chess openings.
Not bad for a newly formed band and FIRST EVER live performance 🤣🤣🤣 simply the GOATS 🐐. Try since I’ve been loving you live at the MSG. The best live performance ever from ANY band.
Welcome to the Led Zeppelin rabbit hole! Great reaction! Subscribed 😁They are the best band ever - on a whole different plane. There is really no other band like them. 4 master musicians who explored so many genres and incorporated them into their music. This gig was very, very early in their history in 1969. They'd only been together for a few months. LZ started in late 1968 and continued into 1980, when tragically their drummer, John Bonham, died and they disbanded. Their guitarist, Jimmy Page, was also the producer of all their albums. Robert Plant is the frontman and John Paul Jones is the bassist/keyboardist primarily. I first heard Led Zeppelin in late 1968 on an underground radio station that was playing an advanced release of their first album. I'd like to suggest 2 things to you -Dazed and Confused - live film from 1970 London - this is one of the numbers where Jimmy uses the violin bow in one section of the song, - it's an experience - ua-cam.com/video/CytJvXbFlKU/v-deo.html and In My Time of Dying - from their 1975 amazing album Physical Graffiti - and the groove is spectacular - an example of how they evolved their music from 1969 ua-cam.com/video/scpqae3P7Dg/v-deo.html Hope you'll check them out. Thanks again for the great reaction.
Hey Duane, nice to meet ya’ buddy👋Well man it’s kinda hard for me to say seein’s how I was about 4 years old when they first hit the scene back in ‘68 right about the same time that video you just watched was made!😁So I can only guess as to when my tiny little virgin ears first got turned on to Zeppelin😆All I know is that I’ll “forever” be thankful for that moment because I’ve been treating my ears to em’ ever since They were my heroes when I was a teenager learning to play guitar 🎸 Unfortunately that was also about the time that their drummer John Henry Bohnam died and the rest of the guys said well that’s the end of Zeppelin with the exception of some of them getting together every now and then to do a little something. Nobody could ever blame them for calling it quits at the time they did because in ten years time they about 12 years time they went from being panned by Rolling Stone as being “bastardized blues” to being the biggest rock band on the planet 🌎 and a major part of that was because of the sound that they had with that one man only. There’s never been another one sound quite like him😇
Greatest band...greatest talent...each one of them!! That is the perfect Jimmy Page on guitar...I don't remember other bands used a violin bow but him.
The first time I remember hearing Led Zeppelin was when I was 11, listening to the radio, and I heard Black Dog off LZ IV. Changed my life forever. Jimmy Page is the reason that I started playing guitar in my 20's and still am 40 years later because of him. Zeppelin is the greatest musical force in my life, and always will be. Greatest group of musicians, to the man, greatest live band, greatest band, and Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist, greatest musical composer, and greatest producer in the history of rock music.
Jimmy was thinking about the name "Lead Balloon". During a jam session with some of rocks best in the late 60s, including Keith Moon. Jimmy wanted to start a band with one of the stars and their manager said "Like hell, That'll go over about as good as a Lead Zeppeilin". I have heard a few differing versions of the same story, including one where Keith Moon came up with the name. Let's just say it came out of a partying jam session in England one day.
I was 8 years old when they started but my brothers were 18 and 20. I heard them from the beginning. First track, First album, Good Times Bad Times. Recorded in 1968. Released in the U.S. Jan 1969. The best way to listen and react to LZ is to start with the first album, Led Zeppelin 1, track 1, and go in order. The albums were meant to be heard as a whole, not individual songs. They very rarely allowed a single to be released. There are 8 studio albums plus CODA, released after the drummers death, John Bonham RIP. Hear the studio version first so that you get the song, then listen to it live - they never played a single song the same way twice in concert. The Greatest Band Ever. 🔥🔥❤❤
Start from the beginning. First album to last. See how they develop!!! It’s brilliant! Throw in live performances along with the studio. Usually you can get the live w/0 being blocked if you do it that way. Go down the rabbit hole!!!!
You should really familiarize yourself with Led Zeppelin's studio recordings (which are some of the greatest achievements in audio recording history) before delving into their live stuff, which was very improvisational and may not give you a true understanding of the song itself. I Recommend revisiting the song "Stairway to Heaven", but this time, react to the original studio recording off of the album Led Zeppelin IV. Then I would react to the studio recording of the song "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album Led Zeppelin III. Cool reaction. I rarely watch Led Zeppelin live reactions, but you did a nice job on this one. I subscribed. Peace
Agreed ❗ Great song. I've watched several young Reactors on UA-cam hearing DAZED AND CONFUSED for the first time. What a delight to watch them clutch their hearts sometimes and go " Oh My God". They get it.
Jimmy in interviews said that David McCallum's FATHER was a sessions violinist when Jimmy was doing session work in his teens. MCCALLUM recognized how curious and creative Jimmy was and had him try his bow on the guitar which impressed Jimmy because violinists are very protective of their equipment and the he had assumed that the guitar would damage the bow. It did but Jimmy could afford the upkeep. He used it first when he was a member of the Yardbirdssoprobably in 1966 or 67
I would have given my right leg to be sitting on the floor for this show. I wonder if any of those people knew how historic this would become? You are about to go down an incredible rabbit hole my friend. See you on the other side.
The first Led Zeppelin song I heard was Whole Lotta Love on a car AM mono radio. I did not know the song had a bass guitar in it until I later heard it on a good stereo system. lol
Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page guitar, Robert Plant vocals/harmonica, John Paul Jones bass keyboards, John Bonham aka Bonzo drums. From England. 1968-1980. Jimmy was first guitarist to play with bow.
I'd forgotten the beat at 9:48. Fab. Studio versions of "When The Levee Breaks" and "In My Time Of Dying". Live, "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Kashmir".
It was very common in the 60's to ssy "that'll go over like a lead balloon" when something looked like it would be an epic fail. Don't know the origins of the saying. So that was the first thing they considered till one of the Who said Lead Zeppelin to make it seem even worse. Came from a conversation Jimmy and members of other groups had while considering leaving their bands and forming a super group. Jimmy later asked permission to use the name when the Who stayed together and he formed his new band without them. Got this from interviews with Jimmy in more recent years. He still has an excellent memory
Jimmy saw another UK musician try a box on a guitar (a lesser known band) and tried it out. Sometimes, like here, it doesn't work so well. He did get better at it over the years. I saw Plant and Page in 97 and it was the best show I will ever see, and they were old guys by then.
On the band name - The story goes when Jimmy Page was looking to put a group together he was talking to Keith Moon and John Entwistle (from “The Who”) about stealing them away for his new group. They thought it would go “over like a led balloon” and then somebody joked it would be such a disaster it would be more like a Led Zeppelin.
Jimmy Page had used the violin bow for their song , Dazed and Confused Which actually was reworked from his previous band The Yardbirds. My mom bought me LZII cassette, Whole Lotta Love & What is & what should never be were favorite s. I was 9 Ty Mom ❤❤❤
Keith Moon of the Who allegedly when he heard the yet unnamed band rehearsing said "They gonna go over like a Led Balloon ie a Led Zeppelin so the story goes
Not just or only a rock band…..actually they are blues, soul, funk, metal or just the most uniquely gifted group ever……once you go Zeppelin, everything else pales in comparison.
Origin of the name: when pete townsend of the the who heard jimmy and john paul ( best guitar and bass session players of the epoc) he said: that's gonna go dow the toilet like a "lead zeppelin" (red: heavy shit af) jimmy and robert laughed and liked it ... cutting out the 'a' in 'lead'... they went with it
There was a popular TV show on in 60s call man from uncle the star David McCallum knew Jimmy page and suggested to him to use the violin bow and he did with dazed and confused check out Rush you'll love them as well
Zeppelin I got a hundred songs that are all different in their own right you'll be amazed at the rabbit hole will take long time to go down I've been going downtown for about 40 years
So the whole thing about a lead balloon or Zeppelin came from a comment that took place when Jimmy Page decided that he would fulfill a contract of a band he was in (The Yardbirds) after most of the members went their separate ways. He got his friend John Paul Jones to join, but the vocalist he wanted turned him down, however he suggested Robert Plant. Plant agreed as long as he could bring along his drummer (John Bonham). After they completed the tour as The New Yardbirds they wanted to find a new record label. So they remembered the joke about the lead Zeppelin, changed their name, signed with Atlantic and the rest is history.
Only Jimmy played with Violin bow..........Keith Moon the Who's drummer heard of the formation of a band Jimmy was putting together....and said ' it'd go OVER like a lead zeppelin'
This is very early Zeppelin where they were a lot looser and free form. They always kept it pretty loose but over their time their songs got a bit more constructed. I adore early Zeppelin
This video is so early in their history Robert is wearing his wedding ring. Don't think he wore it on stage after. He's also wearing his wedding suit. Before they started making big money.
Welcome to the magician, Jimmy Page! Not the best audio! I know a lot of people like to see them live but personally I find if you're going to do a reaction it's best to listen to the studio version! JMO Thanks!
Page told Keith Moon he had formed a new band that he wanted to call Zeppelin. Keith Moon replied it was going to be a lead zeppelin (the hydrogen powered air ship on the cover of no 1). Page loved it and settled on Led Zeppelin.
John Entwistle of the Who were thinking of making a band with Jimmy Page and it didnt happen ..John Entwistle said "It would probably go down like a lead(the metal) zeppelin and Jimmy used the name but took the "a" out of lead cause he thought that Americans would probably pronounce it " leed:
The first Led Zeppelin song I ever heard was a song called "Immigrant Song." But when I first heard it, I had no idea of either the name of the song nor the identity of the band: I was eating lunch in my high school cafeteria in the early 1970s when the song was played over the cafeteria's audio system (yuck.) I was totally smitten with that song, and searched for years to try find out the name of the band and of the song. I didn't succeed until 1977, after which I bought every Led Zeppelin album I could get my hands on. I don't like every one of their songs as much as I do either this one, or "Immigrant Song." Nor is either of those songs in my top 3, but they're definitely high on the list. It's hard to find a Led Zeppelin song that isn't likable--and most rate rather higher than just that. You could choose songs from their body of work at random, and do quite well. That said, I'll recommend that you react to "Since I've Been Loving You" next.
It’s actually a cello bow! Jimmy had tried a violin bow, but it was too flimsy and the strands tore too easily. A cello bow was much more robust. I saw them perform in 1972, just before the 4th album was released and Jimmy featured this technique a lot.
You did a nice job ... very respectful of artists and your listeners.. Dude .. this is super hard early, Led Zeppelin ... My man when the crowd ain't moving you know it's the 60's ( black and white too ) ... This is when they were scrapin' hotel money together and hustlin' to make it... But it would not be long ... Go down this "rabbit hole" ... there is none like it ... They will always surprise you and blow you away ... Every damn song ...🖖✌️
My momma told me they got their name while they were getting stoned staring into the sky and one of the guys said "is that a fucking led zeppelin?" And they stuck with that lol But I think it's some of Jimmy Page occult knowledge being a sinking vessel quite a bit of implication but there ya go? Lol love the reactions bro

You should listen to their version of this at Royal Albert Hall. It’s twice as good
Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page guitar, Robert Plant vocals/harmonica, John Paul Jones bass keyboards, John Bonham aka Bonzo drums. From England. 1968-1980. Jimmy was first guitarist to play with bow.

I want to recommend Zeppelin's live album titled The Song Remains the Same ! Most of it has been taken down . I recommend buying the DVD .
Please try The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song live from Madison Square Garden 1973. You will love it!!
It was done during the Stairway to Heaven tour with Page revealed as the wizard that he is. Also please check out the movie the Song Remains the Same!

if you want to know just how good they are check out their last performance Kashmir live at Celebration Day 2007 50 years later
If John Bonham's not on the drums, its not Led Zeppelin.

Yes...Moon said they would sink like a lead balloon!
And they decided to spell it "led" because, according to Page (I believe), "those thick Americans" would pronounce it wrong if it was spelled "lead".
Jimmy Page had used the violin bow for their song , Dazed and Confused Which actually was reworked from his previous band The Yardbirds.

Ty Mom ❤❤❤
Keith Moon of the Who allegedly when he heard the yet unnamed band rehearsing said "They gonna go over like a Led Balloon ie a Led Zeppelin so the story goes
Not just or only a rock band…..actually they are blues, soul, funk, metal or just the most uniquely gifted group ever……once you go Zeppelin, everything else pales in comparison.
The Name Led Zeppelin was a quip by Keith moon who said that Pages band would go over like a Like a lead balloon! 😂Enjoy!
I was 13 when this came out, I was never the same......
Origin of the name: when pete townsend of the the who heard jimmy and john paul ( best guitar and bass session players of the epoc) he said: that's gonna go dow the toilet like a "lead zeppelin" (red: heavy shit af) jimmy and robert laughed and liked it ... cutting out the 'a' in 'lead'... they went with it
There was a popular TV show on in 60s call man from uncle the star David McCallum knew Jimmy page and suggested to him to use the violin bow and he did with dazed and confused check out Rush you'll love them as well
BTW, "Ramble On" and "Good Times Bad Times".
Never missed.
I’d have not heard of another guitarist using a bow on a guitar.
Probably others did after, but I can’t think of any.
Zeppelin I got a hundred songs that are all different in their own right you'll be amazed at the rabbit hole will take long time to go down I've been going downtown for about 40 years
I hit like before I this even started for your Every Time I Die banner in the back
Take your pick, man. There are all great songs.
As I understand it, He was not the first to play a guitar with a bow, but he certainly made it famous and did fairly often.
Check out the Studio version .More polished and complete .
Only Jimmy played with Violin bow..........Keith Moon the Who's drummer heard of the formation of a band Jimmy was putting together....and said ' it'd go OVER like a lead zeppelin'
The name LZ, came from the drummer of The Who, the late Keith Moon, as a joke.. Page, is playing a fender, that the late Jeff Beck, gave him
Thank you for that!
kieth moon and john entwistle said they would go down like a lead balloon
Dazed and Confused live, please! it's a cello bow, which is stronger than a violin bow.
This is very early Zeppelin where they were a lot looser and free form. They always kept it pretty loose but over their time their songs got a bit more constructed.
I adore early Zeppelin
All you have to do is start at first song first album and just enjoy the trip.
JMO Thanks!
🔥 ❤
Keith moon drummer for the who said your gonna fall like a lead balloon
Page told Keith Moon he had formed a new band that he wanted to call Zeppelin. Keith Moon replied it was going to be a lead zeppelin (the hydrogen powered air ship on the cover of no 1). Page loved it and settled on Led Zeppelin.
Thank you for the info!
Nearly right, he said they'd go down like a lead balloon and the band got the idea for Led Zeppelin from that.
I’ll have to look for that one thank you!
It’s actually a cello bow! Jimmy had tried a violin bow, but it was too flimsy and the strands tore too easily. A cello bow was much more robust.
I saw them perform in 1972, just before the 4th album was released and Jimmy featured this technique a lot.
I believe it’s a cello bow
Keith Moon quipped that the band would go over like a lead blimp So they used that
I think that Jimmy Page is the first person to use a violin bow on his guitar.
Eddie Phillips from the Creation was the first to use a violin bow on the guitar
your not uneducated or wrong to be surprised hes using a bow on a guitar
he really was different and the only dude really doing that
different..he just the best of all time jimmy page
Do Whole Lotta Love
It should be up on my channel!
💪🔥👍🍸
Golden live Zep in b/w
It was said that this band getting together wouldn't fly. Yah like a led zeppelin.
😂
Sorry, don’t pause during guitar solos, people get upset. Lol
Good thing it’s my channel right 😂
@@DuaneReactsNice one Duane ! Respect .
Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are considered pioneers of heavy metal.
My momma told me they got their name while they were getting stoned staring into the sky and one of the guys said "is that a fucking led zeppelin?" And they stuck with that lol
But I think it's some of Jimmy Page occult knowledge being a sinking vessel quite a bit of implication but there ya go? Lol love the reactions bro
Actually the drummer for the Who said they would sink like a lead balloon!
@@juliemanarin4127 you calling my mom a liar lmao! Cool I didn't know that!
@@juliemanarin4127 In their documentary ..their travel organizer said it was actually John Entwistle
Faker...idk..
