People's perspective as to what exactly happened varies. What is fixed is the topography and physical evidence. I've constructed a draft Google Earth file which shows movement/positions from a combination of Luttrell's book, intel from Red Wings II and even some anecdotal evidence. Even though I dislike the grandiose language used in Luttrell's book, from my experience (Recon-jungle/woodland/mountainous) I am satisfied with Luttrell's account of the topography, movement, and I can identify the initial OP and OP1 (Murphy's OP on the NE ridge line). Recent anecdotal evidence from Gulab that Shah's men had seen Murphy's team with the goad herders from near the summit is highly plausible and checks out from both the topography and timeline, since the CH-47 insertion was so close that Shah may have been alerted during the night and headed up Sawtalo Sar at first light looking for a fight. This explains how Shah's men knew to sweep down extended line and split on both the N and NE spur lines. What I found later, when reading Luttrell's book and the Google Earth file side-by-side made me ill as the graphics show something unbelievable. Luttrell states verbally and in his book that Axelson must have died from his wounds and from the final RPG hit. He never saw him after the blast but does state that the Taliban were around his body. Although, Red Wings II found Axelson's body further down the valley - did the Taliban relocate the body? No! Luttrell found a cornice to hide under and at dusk claims to have shot 3 Taliban across the ravine. Note that every soldier knows the sound of friendly weapons and enemy weapons, so Luttrell's shots, even though suppressed, would have been obvious to anyone in the area especially a friendly. At night, once Luttrell was climbing toward the NW he states he slips and makes substantial noise. Two hours later he says he was being tracked by Taliban some 200 yards behind him, that they were making noise (talking and breaking twigs). In these valleys at night noise travels long distances, especially upward (Luttrell "you could hear a goat fart"). My Google file shows that Axelson was probably still alive, that the Taliban left him to bleed-out during the night knowing his wounds were too severe for an escape. It was not Taliban pursuers which Luttrell could hear 200 yards behind him, it was Axelson moving towards Luttrell's shots 2hours earlier!!! It was Axelson who was crawling over branches, breaking twigs and possibly calling out. The moment I realised this isn't possible, it's probable, I felt sick. I wish I could link the file here so you could see how close they were. I think deep down Luttrell realised this himself once Axelson's body was found and even though Luttrell raves-on about Murphy throughout the entire book - more than any other figure by far - he decided to name his son Axe because of this knowledge. Luttrell didn't leave Axelson for dead, he left him by accident. I don't believe Gulab found 11 full magazines on Luttrell, I think he's simply had a falling-out and said this to attack his character. As for Taliban numbers, my personal opinion is that the minimum number of Taliban which could achieve these events - given their greatly superior plunging and interlocking fire positions - is no less than 15...probably 20. I do not believe Luttrell's claim of 80-200 Taliban but do believe that with RPG and a single MG fire it most certainly would have felt and sounded like 80+. Operation Red Wings was simply hit by a 'Hasty Ambush' after revealing their position at OP1 on the NE spur line and the decision to relocate back to the first OP ultimately led to their downfall.
Max Headroom wow great work ive researched just about everything I possibly can on this topic just becaus eof how kuch video footage of events. theres a german blogger or journalist who has footage of some other interesting things ive only seen the screen shot but believe they are related as well as looking for the original footagw of the day on the moutain from the talibans perspective obviously if a news team could get it for parts in a short on ahmad shah and his mayhem it must exist I think that could also help indicate more accurate numbers aswell as potential movements and deffensive/offensive tactics taken and made by the seals. great work though man glad to see im not the only one obsessed with it.
Legbiter 14 all I can say for sure is there wasnt some 80 to 200 fighters. its very plausible they were seen and thats why the ambush worked so well wich I may say those guys out in the north east layed out some pretty damn good ambushes. and it may have been axe who he heard i dont know how we could ever prove it

That's crazy... in the beginning of the video you can see some of Shaws troops take a watch off a Seals wrist. If you look closely you can see the firefighters patch on the Seals arm, that's Mike Murphy...
Yes if you learn the appreciate the geographical location of Afghanistan you understand why this is because for majority of history we have had to defend our homeland from invaders for thousands for years it is in our dna now.
Oh sure, I meant In Broader sense. I went through a Marine Boarding school, and USAF Basic/OTC was easier than that.. Their story deserves to be told Ed Daracks book which was slandered as USMC horeshit during the film's promotion.
Downrange Film I read his book and while it was good there were times he came across angry and bitter. Almost like he was upset that Marines were not mentioned as part of Operation Red Wings broader picture. You can tell he resented it but his book was really good. Very detailed
turkeychuck the Four SEALs were on a Recon to confirm Shaw was on Target. Then the following night an Assault Element of SEALs and Marines would assault the compound and kill him
Read something about locals in the area hearing helicopter noises in the region during the night of the SEALs' insertion and that already made Shah's militias aware of the presence of American troops. If it's true then that means the mission has already been compromised even before it started.
That's what the Afghan side of the story says. That EXACTLY. They heard the bird, they went out on patrol and found the rope, and they were following the SEALs from the very beginning. That's why the Marines were never going to use a bird to insert. SEALs got arrogant and, as a result, got dead. It's hard to have any sympathy for them.
Taking trophies is quite common. In WW2, Marines were pulling teeth out of dead Japanese soldiers because they sometimes had gold fillings. That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to war.
Cant believe he survived being unable to walk, surrounded, behind enemy lines, 50 guys walking around looking for you, nobody in the U.S. military knew where he was. Marcus owes his life to Gulab. It's almost a guarantee that Marcus would have not made it out of there being unable to walk with the Taliban looking for him. Even with Gulab saving him, it didnt come without a price. Several of Gulabs villagers died defending the village from the taliban. And for several years later Gulab survived many assassination attempts for helping Marcus. Gulab now lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Oh sure, I meant In Broader sense. I went through a Marine Boarding school, and USAF Basic/OTC was easier than that..
Their story deserves to be told Ed Daracks book which was slandered as USMC horeshit during the film's promotion.
I read ED Daracks book,I thought it was a well detailed book.It was good to read another take on Red Wings.
turkeychuck Also to protect the Marines, as they say in the movie (even though this may not be credible) "Shaw killed 10 marines last week".
Thank you for this video!
Its sick watching the Militia sit next to Murphy's body and trying on his boots, and taking his watch. Like animals.
@blamthekaboom yes the deadly game. They knew what they signed up for, but still, it's awkward when it's on video. That's rare in war
