- A conversation with director Peter Berg, retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, and actor Taylor Kitsch of Lone Survivor about the clashing definitions and manifestations of heroism and courage at the heart of this riveting, harrowing story.

Marcus Luttrell, I wish I could shake your hand.

I hope Marcus finds peace in his life.... incredible story.
TheKaffeeKlatsch I've already walked in those shoes, because I've already served. What you are too blind to see is that Marcus is getting all the attention over his buddies and those that died. You have to remember that Marcus isn't the hero. Lt Murphy is the real hero in this. He sacrificed his life for his team. Without Lt Murphy, they would all be dead, because nobody in the rear knew what was going on or where exactly they were at. You wouldn't know this because you've never lived life in combat arms jobs. And if you had any two cents in your brain, you would see that Marcus himself compromised the mission by convincing them to let those Taliban herders go. Sorry, but just because they are goat herders doesn't mean they weren't Taliban. Why else would you run back to tell? All they really had to do was tie them up, take the shot (if possible), zip-tie their knees and ankles (to slow them down from reaching the Taliban) then escape and evade. They would have completed their mission wihile avoiding un-needed causalities. Marcus' conscience would have remained intact and they would have been back in the rear drinking cold beers and BBQ'n. Special Operations guys are supposed to be smart, creative, etc. This was some crap I would expect from a line unit.
You are suppose to operate in this order:
Mission, Men, Me.
Marcus operated as:
Me, Men, Mission.
Richard H I served Honorably. Nuff said. Until you sign the contract and wear the uniform, STFU and smoke your weed
paul19781105 Pretty disrespectfull for someone who has served...
TheKaffeeKlatsch Not when it's a danger to you or your men's lives. Good soldiers follow LAWFUL orders.
paul19781105 Tell that to drone pilots.
"I'm not advised, meaning I'm not gonna tell yah." I love that so much. I don't know why, but I do.
Because he's lied so much he cannot keep track of it.
Half of me is thinking this is gonna turn into a shitstorm like the last comment I made.
What has he lied about? Please, don't cite the bullshit article published in a disgruntled vet column. Give me cold hard facts from reputable sources.
Steven Schmidt I would also recommend checking out a map of Sawtalo Sar, and seeing just how far 7 miles is from where they were ambushed. About 6 miles farther than the village. Luttrell told a sea story for personal fame and profit, at the expense of the man that saved his life, American soldiers and Vets, and Americans in general. No surprise he lived with Rick Perry, and shilled for both he and Donald Trump. He only answers questions through his lawyer. He is everything that is what not to like about America.
luttrell is a hero.
he looks like a broken man, so much respect to marcus, i dont even live in america and have a lot of respect for him
He seems far from broken to me.
+Kayex He's unbreakable
+Walter Butler +Yoman2313 can you bother please JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP
I agree he looks very rough emotionally here, but if you watch some of his more recent speeches and appearances you can tell he has recovered and changed a lot!
Whether he's 'broken' or not, he also said 'much respect'.. The US was actually really respected when we actually fought back after 9/11. But for the last 8 years we've looked extremely weak, & depending who the next US president is will be a huge factor in what happens to the US Military.
Thank you Marcus Luttrell...
Imagine the physical pain this man is in still to this day, I bet it's very painful for him just to sit in that chair, what an amazing man.
why ? why trick people to imagine his PRESENT DAY PAIN in his brain !? leave him be ! wish positive healthy thoughts !! whats wrong with you ? why trick ? 👺
wow it's all good he is alive safe and sound back with his FAMILY in USA miles away from Bullets and bomb but the person that saved him nephew paid for that with a bullet in his head and Mr.hero here don't do or never did shit to help him get to the states at least for saving his ass you know what that called leaving a man on the battle field and if you are a tru solider you know don't care where a man from as long as he pick up a weapon and fight for your cause or alongside you you don't Ever leave him on the battle field I lost all respect for him after I got the fact to all this
I can't believe Marcus can talk so candidly about all the pain and the loss he's been through. It's a testament to the training and the selection process of the navy seals that he can explain it to a room full of media people who have absolutely no idea what war is like.
Why is he disrespecting the women and saying we saving and giving freedom to American people when they are literally on someone else soul and fighting, it makes no sense
R.I.P. Dasy, Marcus' dog who was murdered
***** huh? do you have a brain tumor?
No some punk ass kids walked up to his front yard and just shot his dog cuz they thought it’d be fun

She hit the wrong button. Bad move. Put her in her place. God bless Marcus.....prayers go out to u always
Yeah. If you read the book and other writing on this event, the general consensus is that Marcus was and is pretty torn about the decision to let the guys go. He said in the the book that he believes if they killed those goat herders, his three best friends would be alive today. However, he felt had to follow the rules of engagement. In some people's mind, saving three American lives is the "right thing to do" where as others believe that sparing "innocent civilians" (those guys were clearly taliban supporters and wanted to kill Americans) is more important.
Kevin Doherty so true
After all that turns right back around and goes back in wow hats off
Yea but to Marcus’s credit he seemed like he didn’t wanna hurt the interviewer’s feelings half way into his answer. But he defended himself strongly. What I’m curious about is why Marcus has so much regret over the decision to let the goat herders go when Gulab stated that the entire Taliban heard the helicopter landing and that they started tracking the SEALs immediately after. That would have made the goat herders running into them more or less irrelevant.
Wrong button to press, she didn't know any better. Some people don't know.
“I was actually shot in the back the next day and that one really hurt”. What a man to inspire each of us to excel everyday. You are inspirational Marcus.

I served in Afghanistan in 2004 and when Marcus’ book came out I knew I wanted to read it. At that time there weren’t a lot of military history books about our generation of war. Up to that point it was Black Hawk Down and In The Company of Heroes. So this book was special to me because I had been there and left a big piece of me. Even all these years later it still bothers me. I lost 14 men I call brother over there. I always ask why did I make it home. Why couldn’t I have kept them safe and brought them home to their families. Now since being home I hate large crowds and the movie was coming out so my wife and I went to a theater on a Monday for the first 1100 am showing. It actually turned out to be me, my wife, and two Vietnam Vets. I was really tense throughout the movie my wife had to keep telling me to take some deep breaths and calm down. And when the pictures of those who fell I openly weepy in that theater. One of the Vietnam Vets walked up and put his arm around me and we stood there for a bit and then walked away. So thank you to Marcus and Peter, as well as the actors who played these American heroes. Thank you for bringing light to what we ALL did in Iraq and Afghanistan. 🇺🇸
Thank you looks like
Marcus put the interviewer in check(Monday morning quarterback lol)

This is a great conversation. Marcus and his matter of fact approach is inspirational, "Stay out of our way, and we'll stay out of yours!" All said after making an emotional response but still has clarity of mind after all his been through, how can anyone not admire such strength. I would love to see a talk on Marcus with photos that have meaning and him explaining, l just think that would make for good watching. Cheers.
She asks him if he regrets his decision not to kill the aphgans and he says he regrets nothing about the entire ordeal. In the book though he says numerous times that he regrets not killing them. He says he regrets it because if they had killed them, that his team would still be alive. I think Marcus is a warrior. He is also an emotional wreck. You can see it in his posture and how he talks about what happened. Though still alive, he truly gave his life and part of his sanity to this country and I thank him for that.
+chuckv5150 He's gone back and forth on how he feels about that, and even in this video you can say he's conflicted because he DOESN'T KNOW. Of course part of him wishes they had snuffed them and gone on to finish their mission with all those SEALS home safe and sound... On the other hand, showing mercy and compassion is what will make us the good guys, right? As he says, it's a conundrum that will never be answered.
It's a tragedy, what we go through, sometimes.
Luttrell is a liar. The insurgents already knew they were in the area. They heard the Chinook, they likely even found the fast rope, they most likely saw them moving around in the open during the day, and they certainly saw their boot tracks. Luttrell is a warrior, and he is an emotional wreck, but that isn't an excuse for abandoning the man the saved his life because his embellishment and lies about what happened would get exposed.
People change their opinions and values everyday he probably thinks about every single thing that happened over their everyday thinking about what he could have done that shit most likely haunts him
Stacey E wait so you know all of this because you must’ve been there right?
@Gaven Miller that is a valid assessment, had the Afgan herders been dispatched, the likelihood of additional casualties and KIAs' may have been reduced or nullified.
Unfortunately Rule 47 of the 1949 Genivia Convention strictly forbids the killing of non-combatants. There are soldiers and contractors who have been charged, court martialed and or convicted with murder for killing civilians under the assumption of a posed threat by way of civilains providing intelligence of military activity to the enemy. Delicate situation, how does one choose and how can one stipulate unequivocally that the goat herders posed as an eventual threat to the success of the operation? He definitely will wrestle with these questions as to why they "voted" on that decision to let the herders go and the lieutenant did not make a command decision. I was not there, however I have been in situations where remembering the minute to minute accounts and details of an occurrence are difficult to recall with definitive accuracy. He made it back and others did not, no amount of finger pointing will bring the downed participants back from the dead. We learn from the mistakes, make adjustments and deploy moving forward.
Marcus is the one man i would want to meet over anyone in the world. He has inspired me to be better, i had a rough patch about 6 years ago. Wait wait, did Tina Brown just say at 13:42 that the right thing to do was KILLING INNOCENT CIVILIANS? Rules of engagement, and basic ethics would disagree with you Tina. There's a word for people who target civilians in a war zone - war criminal. These guys sacrificed their lives to uphold the law and what morality exists in a warzone. How dare she disrespect their memory by suggesting that they didn't do the right thing and died for nothing.
I agree. Who knows what it was like in that situation except for Marcus. Personally, if they actually had zip ties as depicted in the movie, I would have tied their hands together so navigating down the mountain would have been at least 3 times as hard/slow
***** Fuck off.
***** u stupid?0_0 3 innocent civilians!
Luttrell says in another interview that he wishes he would have changed their decision... it's easy to monday night quarterback, but they made the morally correct decision at the time. Personally I would have tied the three of them together so they would navigate more slowly like holyteejful suggested, however they were taliban sympathizers and all of their options were very real.
Remy Kim Saying that not killing the civilians was the right thing to do isn't Monday night Quarterbacking, it's just making a clearly moral statement. There are no real vagaries here. If they'd killed the civilians they would have breached the rules of war. Talking about tying them up, or taking them with them etc. - That's Monday night quarterbacking.
Massive respect to Marcus Luttrell, an incredibly honest and forthright conversation. Deserving of our thanks and our respect. God bless sir.

Sucks that he has to always relive those days because of the media hype. It's why I never ask a vet what they've seen or heard.
Yeah, but he did choose to write the book and then agree to contract the movie and press rights. It's not like it was forced on him. He's said that he is doing this so people will know the stories of his fallen brothers, so I don't think he minds that much.
IMHO I don't think he realized that people would take it this far. As he said, no one asks him about hunting, shooting or sports. Sounds like some regret there, but yes, he did agree to make a book and movie. Double edged sword no doubt.
I work with a Nam vet and one time he started talking about what he saw, a 72 year old man started to break down. I told him not to worry about it, no need to talk about it. Let's just get our work done today. It's why I don't ask any Vet what they endured, saw or did. But that's just me.
Talking about their experiences helps normalize them, and it's part of the healing process. It actually helps to get it out in the open.

As a Vietnam Navy Veteran, I have the greatest respect for the SEALS and all service members who put their lives on the line for duty. Civilians cannot understand the level of commitment, training, skill, dedication and the special bond between brothers in arms who give their lives for each other and for a civilian population to live free. I didn't serve in combat, I was a Navy Corps-wave, but I did witness the deep spiritual scars left behind due to combat. These men put their bodies, minds and spirits to service. Much of the cost isn't evident until they come home and try to integrate in society. Look on any street in America, if you see a homeless guy in fatigues there is a great chance that he was in service. The SEALS are the elite and most highly trained and dedicated. It is evident that Marcus Luttrell earned his membership in this group. You can see the price paid in his body, his face and the dignity when speaking about getting the job done. His book is a great tribute to the men he served with. As a civilian, I owe these men respect, understanding, honor and the deepest compassion.
Sybil Galer "Civilians cannot understand the level of commitment, training, skill, dedication" and brainwashing that all service members have. So much that they will invade another country and kill innocent people because they are ordered to by the U.S government. DAYUM. To this day, there are still people (see GOP voters, not ALL of them thou) that think the Iraq War was beneficial for Iraq and the Middle East. AND ALL YOU PUPPET SERVICE MEMBERS DO IS SAY "We were put in a situation, and we did what we had to do" Fucking murderers. If you really had some balls and a conscience (see judgement that assists in distinguishing right from wrong) you would tell your government "We will not go to (Insert name of the country you have invaded here; Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, Afganistan, bombings in Lybia, Pakistan, just to name a few) and kill their people"
But since I am talking to a Vietnam Navy Vet, you probably are no more intelligent than a war-mongering psycopath.
Wambli Padilla Actually Wambii my experience in Vietnam has made me a Quaker pacifist. I protested the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the Iraq, Afghan War. I agree that the US rush to war is a disgrace. The US domination of foreign countries is egregious. The politicians and civil leadership hold US lives and foreign lives in contempt. The interference in foreign sovereignty has toppled governments and led to the destabilization of countries from South America to the Middle East. It is ultimately responsible for the rise in hatred for America. This wanton imperialism should be resisted by all who value Peace. However, my hatred of war does not compromise my appreciation and love for the men and women who serve with honor.
Sybil Galer I understand and share your point of view. But I do not understand "However, my hatred of war does not compromise my appreciation and love for the men and women who serve with honor" These soldiers are human beings, and they deserve our love as any other human being. I agree with you. But as service men and women they are invading other countries and killing people because they are ordered to. They do not question or protest it. From this point of view, they are harming the world.
Wambii, if you really want to talk and understand you may email me direct at sybilgaler@gmail.com
Sybil Galer I will, I am interested to know your point of view about this
I forgot to say “thank you” Marcus and all special ops personnel who risk life and limb to secure the freedom and safety I enjoy every day.
If I was the admiral in charge of that mission, I wouldn’t dare show my face in public, much less at a presentation about the story. The leadership is responsible for all those deaths.
Thank you and your brothers for your service.
One of the best interviews I believe I've ever seen. She asked some great questions, and the answers from the guests made this film even more compelling for me. God bless the Seals!
Fuck batman, you have Luttrell
Buddy Dry

Thank you for your service and sacrifice!
What a genuinely terrible interviewer.
Ignorant too
GuitarKid218 Nice profile pic ;)
She’s the typical liberal putz and totally clueless.
Was gonna comment the same thing. Having heard his story several times,it’s amazing, and then hearing this cringe ass interview him. Blah. It’s gross.
i swear
This movie really helped reiterate for me what the men and women in our armed forces do for us; the sacrifices they are willing to make. Thank you Marcus Luttrell!
God bless Marus man. Awesome guy. He should have everybody's respect for what he went through
Why? They only battled like 7 or 8 Taliban. 4 SEALs couldn't take out 7 or 8 Taliban? Geez....no wonder we keep losing.
My heart breaks listening to him talk about going back then losing what was his purpose and life, his team was his family a trauma most can’t fathom. Grateful he’s doing this interview, can’t imagine how difficult it is to talk about the traumatic experiences over and over.
Oh man, I choked up in the end to hear Marcus tell how he feels today - such strength and courage, it's deeply moving and inspiring to witness this hero keep going in spite of the agony every single day
When I read the comments while the beginning of the video played I thought, Wow, there's no way the interviewer is as bad as they say. I was mistaken. She is horrible.
Maybe she was having a bad day.
True badass. Plain and simple. Damn sure glad he's on our side.
Did this lady just say “obviously killing innocent civilians” to being asked what the right thing to do was? I’m glad Marcus put her mighty power of hindsight to shame here.
I love Marcus man guy always puts them on the spot he’s a badass true soul and seal
15:50 simply put in “nice terms” don’t piss off men who work and fight when you sleep and enjoy you’re daily lives
God bless you Marcus.
read his book a short while ago and it had me in tears at the end. dammit it had me in tears in lots of parts of his story. he is a true hero and a person to look up to and say i wish i was just a little like him.
This guy is awesome. He tells it exactly like it is rather than trying to appease society, that's refreshing.
No words I can say to this man,,,just a big SALUTE👍
I am Nigerian by blood but American by heart, I love Americans, Live your life as a legend and a hero Lutrell, may his fallen teammate rest in peace
When she said we are here to honor Marcus, I can only imagine how off she was based on the hearing of plenty of soldiers they came back and dont want to be viewed as heros, it's the ones that didn't make it back that they honor and view as heros.
I love you and thank you brother. I never got to meet my dad because he protected us too. So thank you!
Good on him for holding that woman accountable for her words.
