Honda S2000 clutch replacement the easy way

- follow my instruction it will take you about 2 hours or less to take it down. 1. take the drive line off 2. lower the 6 bolts hold the sub frame with a longer bolts. 3. take out the clutch release fork 4. take transmission bolts and starter bolts out. 5. slide the transmission out.

If anybody is curious, I am fairly certain the specific bolt he used is Toyota PN 90119-14057. 3rd Gen 4Runner diff carrier bolts. They have a later part number that is 90080-11420.

After watching the video and seeing your method to align the transmission for installation I thought it might help you and others in the future if before you pull the shifter in the beginning, put the transmission in 1st gear so when you have to align the input shaft you can just rotate the driveshaft flange instead of rocking the whole transmission. Really helps when it's only one person.

I'm trying to rotate the shaft by rotating the tail shaft, but I think it's in 1st gear but font turn. Should it be in neutral?
@@mstoops69 No 1st gear is correct. If you rotate the tail shaft and the input shaft does not rotate then you are already in neutral.
I can't rotate the rear flange.
@@mstoops69 You can always try a higher gear to give yourself more mechanical advantage from the tails shaft.

Excellent video. Have replaced many transmissions on BMW's also on jackstands and it's a pretty similar process. I also lower the subframe, but am able to support from above with an engine support bar. Will have to do the S2K soon.

Great Video !! Love the detail ! I think installing the starter with its difficult to access bolts, as you mentioned, was the least "fun" thing to do. I have a shop and had to install the engine and transmission on one that my former tech had removed,. He left, leaving me with a box full of bolts, many of which I had to determine the correct one (via size) using a Honda Dealer Parts ordering site. So...in my particular situation, identifying/measuring (mostly engine bolts) was the most time consuming.
Nice I wish i saw this before doing mine. It was a struggle! Still worth it though. It was a good excuse for me to buy some nice tools.

Great Video, thank you. Highly recommend everyone reference LHT Motorsports videos as well for their recommendations. WAYYY too much threadlock on the flywheels bolts. big no-no. just a tiny dot at the starting threads is all you need. Honda doesn't recommend, so it's not needed.. torquing properly is the key. Also, you don't NEED longer bolts. the OEM subframe bolts are long enough from the factory to drop the subframe sufficiently. You did it the right way... NEVER use bolts to force the trans/engine together when reinstalling. you must wrestle the trans back into place or you WILL do damage. Another tip... i highly recommend you inspect and lightly grease the trans to engine alignment "pins"/guides. they are absolutely critical to ensure the trans/engine alignment doesn't move. Replace them if need be.

Very good video to watch, my clutch is due very soon. But it's nothing I plan to tackle myself, I'd play it safe and pay a shop to do it for me. But nonetheless a great video for me to watch and see what's the process.

Great video and very informative but I do have a question! The top three bolts on my transmission are impossible to remove! I have used penetrating oil all kinds of impact wrenches and nothing works.. any recommendations? That’s all I have left to remove the transmission

So you used the 4 runner bolts to hold the subframes, do you keep them on or switch them back with the s2k bolts. Also, just to confirm, you used the same bolts to put the transmission back? Did you keep those or switched them back with the s2k bolts?

Ali Athar you switch them back. He just uses it fir stuff like this. And uses them again and again
Thats what I got from it at least.
Correct , you’d just reinstall using the original bolts during finishing of the job. Those Toyota bolts are just tools to aid the job. When I have helper bolts like that in my toolbox like to paint or mark them in some way so they don’t get mixed up with the original assembly bolts.

are you gotta be careful dropping that subframe ? if yes then where did you get that bolt from Does the whole thing gonna come out if you completely remove the bolts and hold it on your hands ?

Not sure how long but it 1.25 tread 17mm it came out of toyota 4runner front differential bolts. You can take your to home depot or hardwares store to find it they probably have some. Best is go to your local junk yard part.
when you lower subframe, is it "required" to detach the steering joint? I have seen a couple of videos that do it.

Just finished my clutch using this. The only thing not mentioned is disconnecting the steering. If you don't it could break
Make sure not to turn the steering wheel when you do
Asserti I use a sharpie to mark where the steering was for the front subframe. Under the dash there’s a master spline that ensures the joint goes together only one way.

No the motor mount connect with subfram so just drop subfram as seem in the video

Resurfacing is about 40$ buy new is about over 100$
Quick question, what year is your s2000? I went to check the bolt sizes for the subframe and mine don't look like yours and are longer than yours as well?

@@alltsab same. But I removed two of the bolts and they were so long I could probably drop the subframe a few inches off of those bolts and still have a lot of the bolt threaded
@@alltsab maybe someone used different bolts on yours, idk. My clutch has never been touched. My bolts are already as long as those Toyota bolts. Possible to give a length measurement??
My is 7.5 inch that is what I got from the toyota 4runner
are those OEM flywheel bolts? or ARP ones? oem flywheel bolts shouldnt be re-used
jhoer there is no direction in the Honda workshop manual to replace flywheel bolts (other bolts however they do stipulate replacing). This is also reflected in the experience of a huge number of members that have done clutch jobs on the s2ki forum.
What’s the socket size for the starter all the way in the hard part ?
I don't recall but either 14 or 17mm
How high do you need to lift the car from the ground?
30inch or just enough for the transmission to slide out.
Do you have those long toyota bolt's PN handy? Or maybe can you tell what's the demensions of them? Honda bolt said it was a 12x202...Not sure about those long toyota ones are...

After cross reference, I had found those bolts part number... Toyota part number 90080-11420, about $6.75 a pop plus shipping...

This is a great video but It would be much more helpful if you put the part number for the 4 runner bolt or at least told us from what year/model 4 runner it’s from and the specific location of the bolt on the 4 runner so we know how to get it.
Also what type of jack did you use to support the trans? I saw that It had a flat platform so was it a trans jack?

so you say easy way but looks like a rocket science. My s14 is 10 times easier to repalce. Since I bought this s2000 it reminds me of German car design. japanese complicated engineering right there. man replacing them cost more than car itself. gotta get rid of it
