How to Replace a Clutch in your Car or Truck (Full DIY Guide)

- Learn how to replace a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing (aka release bearing), pilot bearing and rear main seal in this video!
My clutch was fine but my throwout bearing was bad so I decided to show how to replace all of the wear items while the transmission was off. This includes replacing the pilot bearing which the transmission input shaft goes into, the throwout bearing which engages the pressure plate via the clutch fork, the flywheel which I upgraded to an aluminum light weight flywheel, and finally the rear main seal because that is a common wear item which causes oil leaks in higher mileage motors. With the transmission out, it is worth it to replace all of these parts now instead of having to do this all over again. Most clutch kits come with the throwout bearing and pilot bearing so you just need to buy a rear main seal.

Some other tips to supplement this great video:
1. Even with the alignment tool, if it’s a plastic one, the clutch disc will likely sag a little. So before you tighten the pressure plate bolts, make sure the alignment tool is centered in the pilot bearing and level.
2. Some transmissions will have a small amount of play at the input shaft so do some research before buying a new
tranny if yours has end play.
3. Another trick to lining up the input shaft to the splines, is manipulating the gear levers and put it in gear then rotate the rear tailshaft until it lines up and fits in. This causes the input shaft to rotate. Then put it back into neutral as you push it in.
4. Don’t hammer in bearing pilot bushings!
Just wanted to share that because of you Chris I was able to do this job on my 01 Silverado. I’m no mechanic by a long shot but you put it in a manner that is understood. Huge thanks for these videos and the amount of organization that goes into them. Keep doing what you’re doing sir!!

Your videos always break it down to where I can understand it and you show every step many times I will search your videos and I do it with your video kinda like we’re doing them together like hands on lol. When he started pouring bread in that seal, I was like, "wait a minute, it's not April 1st, is it?"
But it all makes sense
Seen it done with a rag also. All it has to do is stop the grease from squirting out around your tool - that way, the only place for it to go is behind the bearing.
A bar of soap also works
Rag is less malleable, so might be able to do it sooner, and without quite the mess. @@aussiebloke609
_Usually_ less mess, but harder to get a good seal sometimes, especially if the cloth is too thick. Remember that it has to fit between the inside of the bushing and the outside of your pushing tool without too much friction, or you'll just wedge it all inside the bushing - but without too much extra room or it just won't work. But it's an option if you don't have bread handy. :-)
I did say "without quite the mess", not "without any mess", for a reason. ;P@@aussiebloke609

I mean if this is even what I'm aiming to do.....had my starter replaced last year because the prior winter (& only when it was freezing temps or lower) when I'd start my car (09 civic ex) before leaving work for a brief instant I could hear the starter/flywheel teeth grinding.
dude that did the work said he'd recommend replacing the flywheel cuz the teeth were damaged but I could get away with it as long as nothing weird was happening, but within the last month (not super cold weather but on cold starts) I gotta feather the gas while trying to get into 1st gear, it'll be slipping I think....feels like it's trying to grab but shakes the car instead. not hard to get going and only does it in first gear and never from it to second or through any of the lower gears (maybe since I'm already moving and RPM is higher??? Idfk 🤣)
however I can only imagine what I'm experiencing isn't good lol and that I should figure it out/get it fixed ASAP.
as for mechanical skills I'd say the most in depth/difficult job I've done on my own vehicles was replacing the timing chain, putting on a new harmonic balancer on my old 84 mustang...
or replacing pain in the ass side motor mount on current civic (mainly cuz I really didn't have proper equipment/tools to do myself & dropped one of the bolts in my front clip....ended up taking the whole bumper off after an hour of trying to fish it out from above/below anywhere 😡)
I think I could do lots of stuff myself just no fancy lift/endless tools, etc 🤣🤣, and never enough time..... however I do got some spare cash since I sold my backup computer to a desperate buyer haha. So we'll see
26:58 uhhh did I miss something?? Lol the mark you made on the alignment tool is the same as every other spline correct??? lol it's a symmetrical piece isn't it?
cuz looks like you could just turn till ANY of the splines are pointing up...plz someone inform me
