It wasn't the pepper spray, it was your non definitive answers to when you were returning. Friend of mine works at MT / Canada border and he regularly turns away RV owners who just wanna drive around and come back whenever. Live and learn.
Mistakes: 1. Pepper and Bear Spray = weapons coming across border 2. Saying you were coming for 2 months (vague) and only itinerary item is the super famous Banff anyone can name. Not credible 3. You seem unemployed without obvious reason to go back to the US. Could become a burden to the Canadian taxpayer 4. Pretty limited ties to the US. 5. The woman failed to come into the office initially. That’s not the right way to do it. When they say come in everyone in the vehicle needs to come in.
They saved up money and wanted to take a vacation they earned. The benefits in America are better than Canada anyway. The border patrol guy was just being a jealous hater they earned a vacation.
Hey Cameron , what about if I am moving from Canada to US and I am bringing stuffs that I need like cookware (including forks, spoon , knives , plates , etc ) , It is ok if I am driving to cross the border with it ?
As someone with lots of immigration experience and border crossings here are the issues 1. No ties to the US.. usually a house or rental to show you have ties to the US and not going to stay. Never tell a border patrol you work remote. Provide your physical office location 2. No accommodation in Canada.. you have no plans on place to stay and activities to do. 3. Bringing in contraband.. when she asked you bear spray you hesitated so the border patrol agent was under the impression you might have more you’re hiding or forgot 4. No clear itinerary .. the 2 months you planned seemed too vague. They’re afraid it can turn into 3 months
My experience travelling, you have to be prepared to say who you are visiting, where they live, how long you will stay, what sites you plan to see, reason for going to the country. State what you do for a living, if you own a home, have pets. Sometimes you have to show proof of funds. It is pretty normal. Boarder crossings are just this way. It is a privilege to enter another country, not a right.
I cross the border all the time, I learned to just answer their questions and not volunteer any extra info. dont correct their assumptions either .. try and give one word answers. You need to give them a concrete firm plan and dates that fits the rules of not illegally moving there or working there. working remotely from Canada and not having a firm return date means you are living and working illegally in Canada...
Went to Mexico when I landed I showed my Canadian passport and the guy was like what your business here I just said pleasure vacation he was like okay stamped my book and I was on my way it was so easy.
Are you sure they're working illegally in Canada? Don't most countries define working in their country as doing an activity for an organization or company based in that country for which you derive remuneration, monetary or otherwise? Under that definition that would include volunteering, which I know many countries do. In their case, their not volunteering or working for a Canadian based company or organization and so not taking a position away from a Canadian. Therefore, they're not earning Canadian money. The company is based in the US and they earn American dollars which they then bring into Canada to spend. I would understand it if they didn't have an independent source of income or were breaking the law. Maybe the guy misunderstood the term working remotely; he heard "working" and stopped listening. I can understand maybe understand the worry about them wandering indefinitely(although even there, they clearly stated that they planned to go home in a couple of months), but working illegally? By that broad and loose definition, if you were on vacation in a country and you wrote a letter, checked the email, or made a work-related phone call you would be technically working. If I am wrong, maybe the law needs to be updated.
@@darcyperkins7041 Working remotely is becoming more of a normal thing these days, as well as people living in cars, so me thinks the Canadian government as well as border guards don't like this kind of thing because it appears to be suspicious to them. There's some catching up to do with this kind of thing with border guards and governments but until then this kind of thing will not be stopping anytime soon !
@@zeeshawnali4078 Yes, I think the van with no US apartment or house in addition to remote work gave them no reason to have to return to the United States. On top of it, they had a vague 2 month plan with no reservations showing start and end dates. Even better would be to have a campground (or multiple) reserved in Canada for the length of their stay plus a site or room reserved in the United States around their return date.
@@zeeshawnali4078nah, you can't work in a country as a tourist, even if it's remote work for a foreign employer. On top of that, with vanlife, there's no reason to think they'd return when they say
That's not true. Of course I can work as a tourist if my employer is abroad and the payment is deposited abroad there is no problem at all. Obviously as a tourist means some days or weeks, not all year around as you become resident "de facto". @@markcorneliuslau
You can work remotely from anywhere as long as your Employer is American and Canadian customs agents know that very well. Personally I believe their story but there must have been something else that got them rejected rather than working from home, having pepper spray on them or being vague on the 2 months. There is something else to the story like a DUI, other weapon or else.
I’ve been crossing border multiple times a week for the past 21 years. Very important - NEVER LIE, and always have a purpose or definitive answer as to what you plan to do. Not having a job, or a house to go back to… is a big red flag. Having the pepper spray isn’t an issue, you’d only be required to just leaving it behind. Visitors are always welcome… just have a plan so you have answers for your itinerary.
Yes, I crossed with a couple of friends shortly after the border reopened from COVID. We were questioned quite hard on our plans because they were more vague for enjoying the city we were headed to. What saved us was an AirBnB with a start/end date plus tickets to a concert for our last night there. Additionally, we all had jobs to return to and permanent homes in the United States.
Regardless of whether you are entering Canada or the United States, you have to convince the border agents that you have sufficient motivation to return to your home country…things such as real estate, close family ties, jobs, bank accounts, etc. will do that. The pepper spray very likely had little to nothing to do with your denied entry. My take is that it had everything to do with your stated length of stay, along with no itinerary and no stated return date. I suspect you haven’t been permanently banned , try again in the future and enjoy spending time in Canada whenever you make it in. Cheers.
Pepper or Bear Spray is sold everywhere in Western Canada, so it is not illegal to purchase it posess it or carry it in wildland or natural areas. It is illegal to carry it openly in towns.
During my travels Ive never been asked to supply my bank account information but then again ive never had a trip abroad more than a month and ive always presented a return ticket, once they saw that, no problem
Ya, the border agents have to ensure anyone coming into the country who isn't a resident or citizen, doesn't stay indefinitely without any definitive plans. Happens to Canadians all the time when crossing into the States.
@@jakearsenta2144 my wife and I are seniors , we travel to Florida just about every winter. Last year we were held at the Buffalo border crossing for two hours with no reason given , our truck was searched and all our belongings were left scattered about on a table and I was questioned by two guards relentlessly about my prescription medications...we were finally allowed to continue Our trip south...so Jake you are wrong.
@@northlander4370 That’s just bad luck. The majority of Canadians cross through smoothly. There are bad apples everywhere. You make it sound like Americans are full of garbage.
Most nations on earth require visitors to show their departure date, itinerary or at least first address, have a cap on the amount of time you can stay on a visitors visa, if working then you must have a working visa, etc. When entering the USA years ago a group of us had to provide our address where we were staying, and answer the question about why we were visiting. Border Force have to know these things, they have a broad range of trouble-makers to detect and turn away for all kinds of issues. In Italy I had to hand over my passport at each accommodation so they could let the local police know a tourist was there, they would hand it back some hours later. But I was prepared because I had read travel guides, etc and am also keen to check government websites including my own, to be prepared. All travellers have a responsibility to acquaint themselves with requirements of travel.
People get turned away all the time. You need to have a set itinerary and a return date, funds to sustain yourself during your stay. I doubt pepper spray had anything to do with it, they give people the option to abandon things such as pepper spray. The reason you got denied, is working remotely, essentially you are working from Canada... you could be seeking to work and stay without authorization. The oness is on you to prove your return.
When I went to Canada's with a friend last September it took less than five minutes. My guess it was the "two months". Of course you're on an RV so no hotel bookings. And: you admitted you want to work in Canada ("my company allows us to work from everywhere"). So the Canadian border officer presumably assumed you'll stay there to work. Didn't you show a lease for a house or apartment in the US? Hint: CBP would have asked the same questions if you were Canadian trying to do 2 months in the US with the same story ..
If I were to show up at the US border and even mention the phrase "I am going to work remote while in the US and have no residence in Canada" they would deny me and send me right back as well. You leaned a big lesson about international travel, this could have all been avoided with a few phone calls to get proper information - there are numerous embassies, consulates, hotlines for CBSA (our border patrol) and government websites. All could have helped this process. I do hope in the future you take the time, do it right and come visit us, you will not regret it.
I've crossed into Canada plenty. They want to know one thing mainly; you are not coming to Canada to take a Canadian Job. Answer the questions truthfully, but don't portray yourself as working. I saw a guy get popped in line at the Ottawa airport. "I'm here to work", when they asked about his visa.... crickets. That was the start of a bad night for him.
As a Canadian so sorry to hear about your experience. I just googled vs using UA-cam re the Pepper spray situation and it is in bold print at the top of the page that it is considered a Prohibited Weapon. I believe that the rejection is not permanent so please do not despair and just come better prepared next time. There are plenty of Videos on line where people crossing give you some excellent advice on how to be ready ahead of arrival at the border. Good luck with your travels.
So many have arrived and stayed much to long in CANADA that more attention and scrutiny is now normal. Anyone without a permanent home address and employer is a doubt and risk factor. *NOTE" the border staff have FULL ACCESS to all criminal records for both Countries, included minor cases, fines etc. A DUI will send you back.
We crossed into Canada earlier this month. The border guard asked us three times if we had a concealed weapon. Finally I caught on and said we had a carry permit in NC but didn't have our guns. He moved on and we got in. Guess conceal carry info is a database.
Land border with Canada is always harder than flying in. I flew up to Montreal the other day to see some friends, the customs took 2 seconds, the guy at the door just looked at my passport for about 2 seconds, and handed it back without saying a word.
This is because you usually have a return ticket, and they know that. If you don't have a return ticket, you can expect extra scrutiny. Same for most countries, including the US.
Few years ago I did a one way flight to Calgary to drive back with my parents in their RV I was prepared for tons of questions but just told the agent and went through with no problems just depends
@@buyaj7693 You also had your story straight, you knew your stuff and you were able to tell it to the border agent without batting an eyelash. The people in this video, while well-intentioned and probably totally harmless, wavered on the details of their excursion, and could not make a convincing case that there would be a clear start and end date to their journey. That they did not have a house in the US with a physical address, and they did not have a clear date when they would be returning, set off red flags, and made the border agents question the purpose of their travels. The border agents were worried that these two people would want to stay in Canada past the timeframe that they gave
That's how I'll do it for now on. Our only land border choices are Canada and Mexico, and Mexico would be even scarier to cross. They can turn you away at the airport but it's a lot more obvious - all you have is your suitcase and you probably aren't staying very long. Plus from what I experienced personally and read about from other experiences, Canadian guards are assholes and way too strict. Yeah you're living above a meth lab, I get it, but still. Culturally we're about the same. It's not like you border Russia or Afghanistan or something. Get a grip.
It really helps to have strong ties to your home country: A job, permanent home address, bank account, etc. I remember when I drove from my home to Niagara Falls, ON Canada, when I got to the border check point the agent asked me what I do for work, a long with a few other questions and I figured it was to help him determine whether or not I was gonna try to overstay. Thankfully he was pretty cool throughout the whole process (just doing his job), and my answers satisfied him and he let me through
Border crossings get extra tricky in an RV. They want you to have a reason to go back, campground bookings, a good answer about work or income and an address is important too, should have just said your parents address was your apartment or something. If you didnt bring pepper spray you probably would have got over.
it wasn't the pepper spray, they declared it so it would just be confiscated. They admitted that they would be working remotely and had no defined return date, just a vague two months or so. Both of which worked against them.
When you dont have a permanent residents, going north or south across the border is No Bueno. They feel you have no reason to return to your own country. There doing there job.
Unless you were told you cannot return, you can. They do not like wishy washy answers. You need a firm job, and firm dates. Pepper spray was not the issue
So sorry to hear this As a Canadian who travels the border a lot, they are strict on knowing where you will be exactly, and preferably a shorter time unless its more permanent like school, work with a visa, etc. its been like this in my 15 years or so crossing. Once i forgot to get my friends' address i was going to stay at and I wouldn't be allowed in without it, took an hour to get a hold of them and then It was okay. I think it was more your 2 month plans to go to Banff than the pepper spray , unfortunately :( I wish our system wasn't like this...
Shouldn't even matter, we are allowed to spend 6 months in either country but apparently that's a taboo subject unless you're retired and traveling in a $400,000 RV.
@@alpearson9158 Not unlikely at all, its a top vacation destination. Meanwhile the southern border is wide open among drug cartels and gang wars. But the civilized ones up here need exact itineraries and every other thing for a visit. Give me a F***ING break. Do they really think Americans would STAY up here during a winter??? Or vice versa and give up free health care??
Yeah most times I've returned to Canada they've interrogated me (single male) and asked exactly everywhere I've been/what I've bought/who I've met. And they CHECK to make sure!
My wife and I went to Canada for a wedding two weeks ago. We live in Ohio and crossed over at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, MI. I'm a US citizen, and my wife is a US green card holder with a Philippines passport. I expected it to be more painful than it was, but was pleasantly surprised when the agent asked the usual questions (i.e. where do you live, why are you visiting Canada, and how long will you be here). I had the wedding invitation ready to share if needed, but he asked nothing further and just said, "thank you." As others here have said in your case, maybe the pepper spray wasn't the issue, but rather the length of your stay. Still...I can tell immediately that you are both decent folks who simply want an adventure. I thought border agents had a sixth sense about people. Will being denied this time make it harder to go back in the future? I think you have to wait a certain amount of time before trying to cross again...or at least I thought I read that somewhere.
Another reason why especially when entering Canada is vagrancy laws , you must be able to demonstrate that you can fund your trip to and from your destination and duration of your stay
Crossing border is always a sensitive issue. Sometimes people may be denied. But I am so impressed with your patience and understanding. I’m sure you will make it next time
Your channel just showed up in my YT feed. So sorry about your experience last year trying to get into Canada. What a disappointing first impression of our country. I hope you try again and can get through to the Banff area. It is gorgeous🥰! I know my husband and I had a terrible experience crossing into the US about 10 years ago. It can really leave a bad taste in your mouth for the whole country, but as you say, it's their job to make judgment calls and try to exclude any potential problem visitors. I love how you handled the situation, though. Back away, and live to fight (visit) another day! Much love from Beautiful British Columbia. 🥰
we were denied also. The boarder officer didn't like that we had no plans other than just curious to see Canada. he sent us back and told us we can try again tomorrow. He was scary rude too
In addition to the spray, I think part of the problem was that y'all could work remotely. Working on Canadian soil. Tax related. Work Visa. I'm only guessing, but another video of van travelers said they were Professional house sitters. They were asked if they were to be paid, and they said it was trade of lodging for house sitting. They had to wait a while as the officers talked among themselves about it, and they were then let in. So it may have been the question of working on foreign soil.
I agree! Someone else commented that it could have been because we have a lack of ties to the US as well (no house/apartment and no physical job we need to get back to). So I think if we had better answers to these questions we wouldn't have a better chance of getting into Canada.
@@yutyuiiu true but the difference is the container. Pepper stray can come in concealed container sizes, while bear spray bought in Canada is a huge container.
Seems like not much has changed at the border going into Canada. I am a German Citizen .I lived and worked in Calgary 72 to 75. Then I got transferred to Houston, where I got a Green Card. I still live in Houston. In 1978 or so I had to go on a business trip to Toronto for a company seminar. That crossing took forever. They noticed that I had a Canadian Social Insurance Number and used to be be a legal Landed Immigrant. But that was 3 years ago. Now they were afraid that I was "coming back" and trying to stay. After about 40 Minutes of questioning, they finally believed my story and I was admitted into the country. I still have my SI Number and even get a small pension for my 3 years working in Alberta.
The pepper spray, bear spray was the infraction that allowed them the right to bring you inside for further questioning. It was the answers to the questions that disqualified you from entry.
They have yhe right to do whatever they want whenever they want! They don't need any reason other than they say so. When you are at any international border crossing, you give up all rights. They can literally tear your vehicle into boxes of parts if they so choose. And, it's on you to have it put back together whether or not they find anything. If you show up in your half million dollar Rolls Royce and they want to have one of their dogs jump in and on it, scratching your $50,000 paint job, they'll do it and you can't to a thing about it. If they randomly choose to send you inside and make you take all your clothes off and have someone probe your rectum...they'll do it. And you have no legal recourse for any of the above mentioned scenarios. When you are at a border crossing, they own you.
Bummer you two! Sorry to hear you got denied! Reminds us of the first time we went to Canada last year for an hour and had to turn back (thanks Verizon), but we treated ourselves the exact same way. Pizza, candy, movies and hot shower will cure almost any pain 😂
Imagine someone trying to do and end run around rules and regulations put in place to best protect public health and safety, established from a base of hard scientific fact and evidence. How stupid are these little games ?
Going with the flow is the worst thing to say to a border agent at any border. An exact destination and an exact time of return justified by something like I have to be back by this date because my travel insurance expires.
I never expect American citizens to get denied by Canadian border officers. I believe it's your bond to the US that raised concerns that you might overstay in Canada.
Borders make me a bit nervous. As a Canadian, I have never had any trouble entering my own country but I know others have. I met a young woman travelling in Guatemela from Austria. We shared traveling stories and she said the most intimidating border experience was coming into Canada. Odd that the bear spray was a problem. We sell bear spray too. I hope you try again some day. Just get past that scary border.
just be aware when you try re-entry they most likely will have a record of your denial. We traveled with 2 chihuahuas crossing the border often and they had a record of that. We traveled to U.S. left our 2 dogs with our closest senior friend while we returned to Niagara Falls Canada for a relative's wedding for the Day and the border official asked where our dogs were. We told the truth...with a friend dog sitting for the day. A denial would be recorded with your passport # & license plate I would guess so keep that in mind if you are questioned about it.
Canadian Border Agents are tough because there are so many guns and extremists, be they right wing or left wing, in the USA. Many Americans dis-respect Canada as being a "semi-autonomous" region of their own country which they can enter at a whim, so Canadian Sovereignty starts at the border.
@@DrVVVinK NO THANK YOU. We do not want Americans who are too lazy to do their research and not have a firm date to LEAVE Canada so they are not trying to leech off Canadian taxpayers.

Oh no that's horrible guys. We're so sorry to hear you got denied entry. Everything happens for a reason! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Looking forward to where you go next!
Ya... you have to have a reason to return home. You can't say you're able to work while your visiting because again, that means you have no motivation to leave. One of the biggest concerns is that you are coming to stay and will try and get medical services while visiting. Unfortunately, the USA health care can be such an expense that people without insurance often try and come to Canada because they know ours is free. It isn't really free and you need to do research before you come.
Canadians, camping in Ontario. At the end of our time camping, we had a family function in Buffalo for the day. Faster to go straight to Buffalo so all our camping gear in the car. No problem getting into USA. Coming back into Canada we got searched. Nothing in car except camping gear like we told them. We had nothing to hide so the search didn't bother me at all.
Sorry that happened! Can you try again and throw the pepper spray away first? Also, wondered why you didnt give them the August 27th date instead of 2 months? Seems like the guy wanted a specific date from what you shared. Anyways hope you have a great rest of your trip. ❤
I think we could try again, but its not in the cards for us right now! We would definitely get rid of the pepper spray next time. The way he worded his question made it seem like he wanted a specific reason that we couldn't miss! Like an appointment or something. We did share with him that we were planning to be back that last week of August, but unfortunately he still didn't like that answer. Thank you for tuning in tho! 🙂
@@the-wandering-wings It sounds like you guys needed to be more firm and confident with your answers and your ties and commitments in your home country the USA. Things like “the USA is our country and our home so we have to return by August 27. I crossed over at the Montana border post, en route to Alaska, Canadians asked any pepper spray or weapons, Yes Bear spray and a 12 gauge shotgun with 20 rounds of double 00 buckshot, It was OK with the bear spray and I paid $20 Canadian for a temporary import license for the gun.
You need to have solid information with solid reasons for a visit to another country it's very difficult if you don't have a proper agenda and a leave date ..... and bringing pepper spray is an absolute no-brainer
I would suggest that you and fellow UA-camrs (and anyone trying to enter ANY foreign country) do your due diligence before crossing at the border. Don't rely on UA-cam for legal advice. The purpose of your visit must follow certain legal requirements . Your itinerary must be made plain and simple. No weapons, knives (other than kitchen knives, etc.), no bear, CS or pepper spray...keep things simple. Have enough money in local domination for your stay. Do not plan on working without a work permit. Be polite, explain your situation openly. Hiding anything is grounds for refusal to enter. Don't expect the laws of your home country to apply when entering a foreign country. Talk to a travel agent or a lawyer for advice...don't rely on neighbors or youtube for advice.
I hope you try again to come to Canada. It is a great place to visit & you will have planned an itinerary and things will go much more smoothly. We have learned over the decades of going south to escape winter for 3 months (we are retired) to always check the US customs web site first, have an address for our destinations for our first couple of days. And give them an idea of when we are returning HOME. Good luck. (. Btw. Canadians have to have a physical home address to access provincial health care, voting and other government services, which Americans don’t seem to need as much.)
Sure they are "nice". Don't think we don't have lots of "nice" people in Canada........... After searching all my stuff and even my photos she tried to get me on something even wondering why I was still "un-married" at age 45 and whether it was "by choice" (direct quote) ............... but she couldn't find anything so eventually a senior male officer let me enter (after the female guard was holding up everyone else on the bus). Fire arms are a no go! Pepper spray is classed as a firearm, thus a no go! Have a person you are going to visit. Know where they live (address) phone etc. The departure thing is very important.
Similar happened to us driving from Maine to Canada. Lady was on a power trip and very short with my wife, parents and I for no reason. We are very easy going people. We did have pepper spray because my wife runs and I like her to have something for self defense. So they had us go in like you, we got lucky and that agent was great. He asked if it was cool if he tossed it or if I wanted it when we return, then said he was going to give me my first Canadian souvenir with a form he gave me lol. No further issues, maybe it was because we had a set plan with stops in Canadian cities for 5 days. On the way back in through Houlton, the customs agent was hilarious and complimented me on my truck, said it sounded good lol. Night and day difference, took 20 seconds.

If you work remotely, give the company office address and phone number. If they want to know what port of depearture/entry back tomthe US, go on a map and pick one even if it isn't the one you actually end up going through, but do this prior to your departure to Canada. If anyone asks, just tell them that your plans had changed. If you bring contraband in, it will be confiscated. Definitely no guns and/or ammunition or illegal drugs into Canada. AT. ALL. The guns and/or ammo will be confiscated, and depending on which port of entry you arrive at, you may be denied entry or free to move forward. Illegal drugs will get you detained and arrested. It wasn't the pepper and bear spray that got you denied entry, those would have been confiscated and you would have been free to go. It was the vague answers to the rest of the questions that were given that resulted in the unfortunate outcome.
You said y’all were plaining going back at a certain date. Not sure why you just didn’t give a date regardless of you knew a exact one or not. Instead of a vague “whenever”. Guess lesson learned. Yeah, don’t lie. But don’t come off as passive aggressive or unsure. Even if you don’t think you are. Have an answer, and don’t ramble.

"that we as Canadians treasure and love sharing it with the whole world" - what a lovely sentiment. That brought a tear to the eye of this Canadian-American
Hello from Canada. It is our loss that your visit was not allowed. Please forgive us. Cheers and all the best in your young lives with many nice decades ahead.
The Canadian border agents may have said "We don't know when they're leaving, and they didn't make the effort to find out that pepper spray is prohibited. Sorry....".
For all the other comments, pepper spray in Canada is considered a prohibited weapon. which is illegal. I wish u two best of luck re-entering banff and jasper are beautiful.
It wasn't the pepper spray as I have entered Canaa and the agents every time had no problem with it. They do not want you working remote from Canada with no definate date to return.
Sometimes telling the truth is the wrong thing. Border patrol are not your friends. Next time tell them we are going camping for the week. Best answer to say to make them happy.
We never want to lie especially to someone in a position of power, but unfortunately I think you are right and an answer like that would have helped us in this situation. Or having a better answer for why we needed to come back to the United States.

You cannot work in Canada without the proper visa etc. Even if the answer is we work remotely. The rules still apply. The border guy likely denied entry cause of this answer. Any work in any shape or form without the proper paperwork is verbotten. Should have said money was saved for a two month vacation and returning to US to work etc. They are very serious about making sure no one can get in who might work somewhere somehow. Don't even hint or joke about it. Also keep resume off your computer.
Very sad 😢 to hear you were turned away! Indeed Canada ‘s🇨🇦 loss. Our Country is beautiful and normally welcoming and hospitable. Since the pandemic 😷 normal is anything but. Your frustration and disappointment is shared amongst many Canadians. Our country just isn’t what it was pre-pandemic. Many Canadians are frustrated. I have crossed land borders and also ferry crossing to and from Canada and the USA. When entering the USA as Canadian citizen it seems that the expectation is that length of stay is satisfied with a date of departure. I doubt I have ever been absolutely specific with an exact date. But I do always have a be home by date. Family and friends also appreciate knowing that date. Bear spray vs pepper spray. I honestly don’t know the difference. It seems to me that this could be the issue. Entering the USA 🇺🇸 one is acceptable and not the other. I understand it is expensive and would seem ridiculous to throw it away. I have had mine for years and never used it. I keep it in the van, it is it at all uncommon to encounter a bear. I guess it is similar to having fire extinguishers, first aid kits, a spare tire, etc. I hope not to need these things. I carry them all on my van as part of my safety plan. I hope not to need my CPR mask but I have a couple of them on aboard always. I never tossed out my Bear Spray. Seems that it would be irresponsible to toss it into a garbage bin. I would surrender it at a border crossing if it were an issue. I thought that would be a far better option than a trash bin? I am new to your channel. I might power watch your videos. I hope one day our paths cross.
The point here, is that they rather you lie by telling them what they want to hear, then be completely honest. They don't want honest. That's how they keep their jobs.
Agree but if they happen to have their number come up for a search they would have been turned back and maybe banned from re entry later. That’s how things work once you cross Berlin, I mean the boarder
Kind of. Those of us who are neither from Canada nor the US (which has even tougher border for visitors) are trained to tell a version of truth that fits the immigration's need. For example, since "two months" is the truth, than make a date up--- say, exactly 60 days. You guys are too too honest.
I thought you took the Canada entry denial very well. No sour grapes. Nice folks. Maybe give it another shot N of Sand Point Idaho, or the other way, N of Great Falls, at the Coutts/Sweetgrass crossing. Then it's straight N to Calgary; from there only 1 Hr W to Banff. But try to book campsites ahead if heading into our National Parks peak season. Otherwise, Montana, Idaho & Wyoming are great! Or, they sure used to be :) In any case, wish you safe travels and happy trails.. youngins :)
Just the fact that you are basically nomads will make it harder to cross any border for a lengthy visit. Especially when you don't have any concrete plans to your visit it makes it sound kinda suspicious to the border attendants. Unfortunately this exact scenario of having a long and unplanned visit to any country is one of the main ways illegal immigrants get across borders and don't leave. This is especially a problem for Canada as there are not really many other ways to immigrate to Canada illegally
Hey, that’s the law. Hundreds of thousands of Americans cross the border every year to visit us. If you don’t think there's something these two, aren’t talking about, you’re extremely naive
The CBSA asks all those questions to determine your strong ties back in the USA. 1. How are you going to support yourself for two months? Work remotely, work whatever (indication of uncertain ties) 2. Do you still have a house back in Wisconsin? No, we don't (another red flag of uncertain ties) 3. Where are your possessions? Most are at our parent's house (No physical assets, major red flag of uncertain ties) 4. What are you gonna do in two months in Canada? Our baby brother just had a newborn (Why ditching your baby brother for two months?) 5. Can you give me a concrete date to return back in the USA? We don't have a plan, just go with the flow (suspicion to immigrate to Canada) All of your answers give a suspicion to immigrate to Canada on the grounds that you have no strong ties back in the USA. You are not allowed to immigrate to Canada without the proper visa. Simple as that.
for some odd reason, the "risk" that you might try to stay and/or work is a bigger concern than anything else. they're really tough on this. I know people who were going to a weekend convention, but were denied because CBSA feared they might do some paid work during those two days! If you watch the "Border Security" show, Canadian guards routinely turn people away when the amount of clothes and/or supply of cash doesn't seem to line up with the length of time they're supposed to stay in Canada. Like, they're crazy picky about these things.
picky no but like the US Canada frequently has a problem with those flaunting laws and considering their plans beyond the norm. Try the other way it can be far far worse
"we couldn't find anything online that said you couldn't bring pepper spray into Canada" MY GOOGLE SEARCH: "Can I bring pepper spray into Canada" GOOGLE SEARCH RESULT: Is It Illegal to Bring Pepper Spray Into Canada? Pepper spray is classified as a prohibited weapon under the Criminal Code, therefore, bringing it into Canada is illegal. Individuals caught with pepper spray while crossing the Canadian border will be face sanctions, including possible jail time and a criminal record.
@@veryhappy6003 Let's say for example I want to know how to barbeque a steak, and someone suggested that I google "how to barbeque chicken", do you think I would google "how to barbeque chicken?" No, the first thing I would do is give the person who suggested that a wedgie. The second thing I would do is give them a quick slap upside the head (nothing painful, just a quick love tap to smarten them up and make sure they never ever provide advice to anyone ever again) THEN - I would google "how to barbeque a steak". If for some reason I followed their advice and googled "how to barbeque chicken", I would give myself a wedgie and a slap upside the head.
The working remote is a very gray area! The Canadians want you to follow their labour laws and in same cases obtain a work visa for Canada (even if your lawfully employed in your home country and authorized to work remote!) just an FYI if you attempt it again!
Have to say you always have to have an itinerary even for Canadians to cross into the US. As they feel if you don’t have a return date and jobs that have a proper address that’s also a red flag for people might be planning on staying. Plus crossing the border into Canada, no pepper spray and fire arms, brass knuckle switch blades. You have to do your due diligence
@@JS-jh4cy traveling into any country they like to see plans.. where you are staying.. how long are you staying seems to require a definitive answer going into the US as well.
Canada is really worried about people coming there and staying, competing with their workers. The first time I went I had to post a 1k USD bond and this was back in 1982 when I was heading to Alaska.
That's it record your experiences with border crossings whether they go good or bad and record your interactions with border guards however they may go!
CBSA wanted to make sure that you were not coming to Canada to move here illegally and/or work. You don't seem to have a permanent residence in the US, and working "remotely" is still work. If you had a house in the US with your possessions in it, and said that you were on vacation until Aug 27, not working (even remotely) they would have just away your pepper spray and let you in. You should try again, it is worth the visit.
Just imagine being Canadian and having to deal with this attitude by every police officer that has their own definition of the law and you have no legal action to question them on how they determine what the law is
@@matgood6231 Take it from frequent border crossers' it is essential to ALWAYS tell the truth!!! We lived in Canada & had parents & sister who lived in NY state.
The questions are common questions asked at any border. I'm from South America and hold a dual citizenship with the USA, immigration cannot stop me for coming in but they don't make it easy either.
Did you guys cross at Carway? We had a hard time at that crossing because we said we were house sitting. They only gave us a 3 week pass to get to Alaska
Yes! That is where we tried. Wow three weeks isn't a lot of time to get that whole way either! We did see a number of other cars get turned around as we were waiting, so it seems that crossing they are a little more strict.
It’s crazy to me how Canada and America, 2 countries with almost identical culture and history have such strict laws allowing their citizens to cross each others borders, while meanwhile fentanyl is being brought in by the kilogram every second from Mexico into America and Europeans can circle their whole continent without having to do much as show their ID.
For a Canadian entering the United States the process and result would be quite similar. If I have a home back in Canada, a destination in USA and a means of support, then American immigration are happy to see me. But any indication of working in USA or vagueness about when I am returning or uncertainty where I am going and admission would be denied.
I am Canadian and had the same thing happen to me only going into the U.S. I didn't have bear or pepper spray or weapons your guy just plain old had not rejected anyone that week. I was there 4 hours, he would leave and come back yell stand up after told me to sit down don't lean on the counter. It finished with him saying I was living in the U.S. illegally. When I asked how he came up with that, he said from my own admission. I totally had missed that. I at no time admit to that nor would I entertain such an idea the only thing I like about the U.S. is the weather in the winter season it is warmer than where I live.
I've had issues crossing into the US before too. Last time I went, I went alone, I'm a single woman, I was driving to see friends and pick up a couple of huskies from a kennel in Wyoming, so I was making a big trip out of it. The US guards let me in, but when he said they almost didn't because of a couple of issues, I asked if he could let me know so next time I cross they won't happen again. He said no, how do I know you won't try to say I said to do this so you'll get in. I think to be a border guard you need to have Paranoia high on your list of attributes. I haven't gone back to the US since.

Cheers.

This works in reverse too.

Exactly - So WHY the F**K were these Americans whining?? Remember this happened in 2022, not this year!!

Canada has been known for this for decades. They will deny entry for a 10 year old DUI, bar fight etc. Hopefully CBP returns the favor.
Hi, I’m planning to go to Canada as well. Did you need a visa? Or just a USA passport? Thank you
Another reason why especially when entering Canada is vagrancy laws , you must be able to demonstrate that you can fund your trip to and from your destination and duration of your stay
If you're denied entry (depending on what the reason is)you can usually re apply to enter in a year if you have addressed your issues
You were going to a wedding and had invites to prove it. For most Americans and Canadians crossing our shared border it is simply that simple.
So I think if we had better answers to these questions we wouldn't have a better chance of getting into Canada.
pepper spray is ILLEGAL in Canada , it is the visitor's responsibility to find out what is legal and what is ILLEGAL to bring into Canada.
Bear spray is not illegal ( which is pepper spray_

I still have my SI Number and even get a small pension for my 3 years working in Alberta.
are you now a US citizen?

Bear spray is fine. Pepper spray is prohibited
just be aware when you try re-entry they most likely will have a record of your denial.

Ya... you have to have a reason to return home.
Apparently he was wanting to see a visible Itinerary with dates & sites you were planning to visit.
If you are not from Canada but plan to work remotely while you are in Canada, you need a work permit and a temporary resident visa.

you can buy pepper spray in Banff Alberta, without any problems, also only across the border is not allowed to be transported 😄😁

If they want dates, give them actual dates for example a return date of August 31. If they want an address give them an address, like a parents home where your belongings are stored. AT. ALL.
What a complete joke. I’m embarrassed to be a Canadian. Sorry to you great people. God forbid you protect yourself from bears etc.

The CBSA asks all those questions to determine your strong ties back in the USA.
1. How are you going to support yourself for two months? Work remotely, work whatever (indication of uncertain ties)
2. Do you still have a house back in Wisconsin? No, we don't (another red flag of uncertain ties)
3. Where are your possessions? Most are at our parent's house (No physical assets, major red flag of uncertain ties)
4. What are you gonna do in two months in Canada? Our baby brother just had a newborn (Why ditching your baby brother for two months?)
5. Can you give me a concrete date to return back in the USA? We don't have a plan, just go with the flow (suspicion to immigrate to Canada)
All of your answers give a suspicion to immigrate to Canada on the grounds that you have no strong ties back in the USA.
Why 🤔 can you not say you are tourist and traveling?
@@JS-jh4cy traveling into any country they like to see plans.. where you are staying.. how long are you staying seems to require a definitive answer going into the US as well.
Guns are legal with paperwork
Just imagine being Canadian and having to deal with this attitude by every police officer that has their own definition of the law and you have no legal action to question them on how they determine what the law is
Its brutal our government is so corrupt. We have a spoiled brat running things.
Yeah I would have just said no we don’t . Chances are the next guy searching your vehicle might not give a shit if you even would have gotten searched
@@matgood6231 Take it from frequent border crossers' it is essential to ALWAYS tell the truth!!! We lived in Canada & had parents & sister who lived in NY state.
@@djtaste8610
This has nothing to do,with the government. This is the law.
@@SheepOnDrugz who makes the law?? Yes thats right the government
@@the-wandering-wings I️ really think that it's the people that work there. People who crossed through Vancouver barely had any problems.
@@Meghanandmatt I agree! They are definitely strict at that crossing
It wasn’t the pepper spray. They thought you were going to work and stay.
Look at how many school shootings they have compared to us.
"almost identical culture and history"... wrong... One has mass shootings, the other maple syrup! :D
The border officers are only doing their jobs these laws are set by the government.
@@Panzerbeast One has freedom the other has tyranny and mass stabbings
9/11 changed everything, I used to cross the border easily, and half the time I was drunk. 😮
For a Canadian entering the United States the process and result would be quite similar.
If I have a home back in Canada, a destination in USA and a means of support, then American immigration are happy to see me. But any indication of working in USA or vagueness about when I am returning or uncertainty where I am going and admission would be denied.
I’m surprised they did not asked for vax. Info.
I am Canadian and had the same thing happen to me only going into the U.S. I didn't have bear or pepper spray or weapons
your guy just plain old had not rejected anyone that week.
I would definitely get deined entry into US for same questions and answers.
We definitely should have been more prepared to answer these questions! Just wanted to share our experience so others know what to expect
Never a good idea to tell another country you plan on illegally working from their country remotely then say you're there for 2 months while working.
