I'm from Ontario and have walked over the Rainbow Bridge many times. Really kewl when you get to the borderline. Last time I was there it only cost 50 cents.
Yes 50 cents, thats 2 X quarters "Canadian Quarters" I had no Canadian coins only US and had to climb over the turnstile. Luckily it was 7AM and no one was watching
The last time I crossed, it was 10 cents which was in the late 1970s and without any hassles whatsoever. Stayed at Michael's Inn on the Canadian side and dined at the Howard Johnson's on the American side throughout the one week spent at Niagara Falls. Food was great and the prices were lots lower than on the Canadian side.
A few years ago a couple of Polish sailors from a cargo ship stopped in Toronto used the bridge to try to go to the US and were denied entry as they forgot their passports on their ship. Then they couldn’t come back into Canada without passports. They were stuck in the middle of the bridge for a few hours until they called a fellow sailor to bring their passports. Caught in limbo, crazy.
As an American I must say the Canadian side is much better than the American side. I went to Canada last month and visited Toronto and Niagara Falls awesome places!
From Niagara Falls USA and while growing up there was a swimming area at nearby Dufferin Islands on the Canadian side that we use to go to by ourselves when we were about ten years old and well into our teens, also there was a swimming pool next to the old Cynanamid Chemical Factory about a mile from the other bridge. Use to cross the bridges by our selves to get to the swimming area's and a number the Customs and Border Agents on both sides actually knew knew us by names and were very friendly, and asked us if we're bringing anything in. Also, there's a bronze plague attached to the railing that marks the actual border, was a couple there that a couple was taking a picture of, and you walked by without showing, was disappointed that you didn't show it.
I crossed this border many times while I lived in PA. Every time the line up for cars takes 40 min - 1 hour and the actual questionnaire is only less than 1 min on Canadian side and less than 3 min on the US side. A series of questions with a string of "no" lol.

Thank you for another awesome video Matthew!!! That really is pretty! Now I can kinda say I crossed the border lol and yes I would bet someone has dropped their passport in there.
Yeah it’s normal to be nervous sometimes. A few comments (us citizen here not Canadian, you may share a different opinion): Canadian officers aren’t as tough as their U.S.A. counterparts, based on my experiences. I crossed the Peace Arch into White Rock/ Surrey, BC (Vancouver area) by foot and the Canadian officer asked me what I had for my three day trip, and where I was going, Vancouver by public transit and where I came from. Really easy process. If you ever head to this side the peace arch is a great place to visit. Definitely should have travel docs in hand even if not crossing border outside of the park (which for Canadian purposes would include citizenship certificate if not entering us). But a great park. Of course if you’re a citizen you have a right of entry (they can’t refuse you entry) but your goods re still subject to inspection. I took a bus southbound and that took a bit longer because they did enhanced screening southbound.
I live right next to the us-mexico border and have seen and crossed the border many times And it's weird how fasinated I am by the us-canada border Would love to visit someday
There is no border wall or barrier between the US and Canada, since the two countries signed a treaty that ended the War of 1812. The crossing stations are on either side of the border, but not in the middle. It is interesting how these things work 😃
By any chance, does anyone know if you can cross the border with luggage? The turning thing at the start looks like it can only fit a person through onto the bridge...
I never knew people walk over for pleasure. Sounds stupid but I was either in a car or a bus, otherwise I flew dozen of times between the two countries. Going to the U.S. for decades. You never stop learning something new. Thanks for the video. I hope foreigners know that this is a know, know, unless they have the correct papers. I must agree that the Canadian side is beautiful and the town is well developed. I never saw the American side.
I just walked through at the peace arch in blaine, wa, U.S.A. / Surrey, BC, Canada. On a bus they can’t even use that crossing and I really like the peace arch. It was a bit of a trek from Seattle to Vancouver on public transit but I did it. It’s more common in Mexico but does happen on the northern border where pedestrians check in there. Just know there are two crossings. Pedestrians must use the peace arch. Trucks and buses must use the pacific highway crossing. Other vehicles can use whichever one they want.
