It’s about the hypocrisy of a “fan”, who is the ultimate consumer, criticizing the mainstream success. “I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s and a Dope Beastie T, nipple rings new tattoos....And in between sips of Coke he told me that he thought we were selling out.” Great song and dope album. In my fav top 5 best albums of all time for sure. That album opened my mind to so many sounds. Check out 46 & 2

Correct interpretation once again ! Many artists get accused of "selling out" as soon as they get some commercial success, especially bands that labor in obscurity with a rabid cult following for many years before then. My favorite quote about the phenomenon was about Metallica getting mainstream success: "People tell us we sold out, and I say, damn right. We sold out every seat at every show at every venue we played."
Can you picture yourself in a sold-out Chesapeake Arena (home of the OKC Thunder), screaming along with 40,000 other people
    FUCK YOU, BUDDY
    FUCK YOU, BUDDY
    FUCK YOU, BUDDY

If you listen carefully during that bass solo at about 2.5 mins, you can hear an excerpt of comedian Bill Hicks; "consume, be fruitful and multiply". The entire album is mostly a tribute to him, as he had passed away less than three years prior to its release (aged 32, pancreatic cancer), and had become associates with Maynard.

You got it right my man. The song is about a kid that came up to him after their Undertow album came out and started bitching that they sold out. Maynard proceeded to call out this kid’s bullshit and roast him with one of the heaviest songs they have made. He tells him that we all are the man. We all want money. Everything is an ad. You go to work and you want people to buy a service or a product or W/e.

The story is a true story of where the kid comes backstage and tells me nerd that toy is going to main stream in it’s going to be a sell out so this is him response

The first time I saw them, between songs, Maynard said, "I hear a bunch of you asking us to play 'Hooker With A Penis.' Well, here's the short version: We have t-shirts for sale at the merch table in the back." 🤣🤣🤣
Other than that, I love Maynard's admission of, "...I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name; I sold my soul to make a record..."

Listen to Tools Disposition, Reflection, Triad. It is a softer sound. They are 3 songs on the lateralus cd, but they kinda go together. Honestly some of my favorite tool music. Also check out Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle. One of my favorite songs. That cd 13 Step changed my life, made me a weirdo 😂

ABSOLUTRELY RIGHT!!!! ABSOLUTELY!!! And that's why the music of the 60's and 70's sounds sooooo much more artistic and relevant to ears of today!!! In the 60's and 70's each major rock group and R & B group has a distinct style and vocal(s) that Brand the Groups so the listener could tell which group was playing!!! Not today's music!!!

I'm glad you enjoyed this song. It's an old favorite of mine. Early TOOL is the best.
I'm going to ask again that you listen to Tori Amos. I sent you a long ass message on Instagram, so I'm not going to do that again, but I will say that Maynard sang with Tori at her RAINN benefit concert in the late 90s on her song Muhammed, My Friend, and it's really lovely. They harmonize together beautifully. Tori says at the beginning that she occasionally calls up Maynard to sing her lullabies when she can't sleep. Can you imagine?

The message of this song boils down to everyone is a Hooker, we all sell some thing of our self.
What matters is what we sell and what we get in return.
Maynard and the band sell their musical talent in return they receive money and fame.
The fan in the song sells his image (the man is a walking billboard) in return for "?popularity?"?
What do you sell in your daily life? Your labor, your voice, your mind, your body, your time?
We are all hookers, what sets us apart is what we sell and what we get for it.
