Correct interpretation once again ! Many artists get accused of "selling out" as soon as they get some commercial success, especially bands that labor in obscurity with a rabid cult following for many years before then. My favorite quote about the phenomenon was about Metallica getting mainstream success: "People tell us we sold out, and I say, damn right. If you listen carefully during that bass solo at about 2.5 mins, you can hear an excerpt of comedian Bill Hicks; "consume, be fruitful and multiply". The entire album is mostly a tribute to him, as he had passed away less than three years prior to its release (aged 32, pancreatic cancer), and had become associates with Maynard.
You got it right my man. The song is about a kid that came up to him after their Undertow album came out and started bitching that they sold out. Maynard proceeded to call out this kid’s bullshit and roast him with one of the heaviest songs they have made. He tells him that we all are the man. We all want money. Everything is an ad. You go to work and you want people to buy a service or a product or W/e.

They harmonize together beautifully. Tori says at the beginning that she occasionally calls up Maynard to sing her lullabies when she can't sleep. Can you imagine?

The message of this song boils down to everyone is a Hooker, we all sell some thing of our self. What matters is what we sell and what we get in return. Maynard and the band sell their musical talent in return they receive money and fame. The fan in the song sells his image (the man is a walking billboard) in return for "?popularity?"? What do you sell in your daily life? Your labor, your voice, your mind, your body, your time? We are all hookers, what sets us apart is what we sell and what we get for it.

I'm going to ask again that you listen to Tori Amos. I sent you a long ass message on Instagram, so I'm not going to do that again, but I will say that Maynard sang with Tori at her RAINN benefit concert in the late 90s on her song Muhammed, My Friend, and it's really lovely. They harmonize together beautifully. Tori says at the beginning that she occasionally calls up Maynard to sing her lullabies when she can't sleep. Can you imagine?
I'm never not going to think of him imitating falling off a cliff when I hear this now lol
That falling off a cliff thing was gold. 😅
Thank you, Thank you !
One hell of a song . Hard to spiral out to Tools most hard hitting songs , really good reaction Jamel 😳😁😀😂
May my wife suggest Two feet ( I feel like i'm drowning ) Please ! I believe your wife will Love it .
Ahhh you made it to Maynard's diss track essentially. These vocals are so fire. Having that 96 nostalgia right now.
I play this song before I go on stage. It’s been a tradition for me for many years. Still hypes me every time.
Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate the music.
What a beautiful statement. If only more thought that way.
I agree, I like rock, yet, I appreciate all music, not into aggressive and screaming singing, but, to each his own. My old man didn't like my rock music in the 1970's & '80's. It's just the Circle of Life.😜
The lyrics are what really get you! Glad you can appreciate it!
Same here, but hey if I like Marilyn Manson... why not?
@@BayouBoy61372 How could you not be into aggressive when it was the Beatles that ushered in this genre with Helter Skelter
Tool "Prison Sex" is another weird one. Super creepy
It's about child abuse. "Super creepy" is an understatement.
