I love how the studio wanted to change the flag hanging kill Not because of it being "too radical and controversial" But because "we wanna see some more Doll stuff, here's the money to budget it." Like, a case of executive meddling where it doesn't screw over it's team but rather proposes a new take and is more than willing to provide support for rather than demand a change and expect people to roll with it.
In all honesty, while I think the doll kill was great, I honestly wouldn't have minded the flag hanging kill. Sounds like it could have worked as a nicely symbolic image.
@@ronburgundy244 of course it would have been great, I'm more discussing the reasoning behind it and the way the studio handled the making of the change being a nice approach unlike other scenarios and situations
I thought the hanging one woulda been better as the doll hanging the senator while the old woman watched and smiled at the camera woulda been creepy but this one was aight too.
I actually remember seeing the original ending to that doll story, with the racist dude hanging. I guess it was on a vhs tape, or maybe the network TV version, since that was less graphic than him getting eaten alive lol
I’m soo glad that the director addressed Black On Black Crime in the last episode cause people that oppose Black Lives Matter claim that Black people never address Black On Black crime but we do.
No, you just tend to blame white people even when no white person was within 5 miles of the event...or had anything to do with the life and circumstances of those involved.
This movie is one of the most underrated horror movies of all time. Even in 2020, this movie is still relevant to this day. S/O to James for this review.
I honestly only recently came across this film. My first impression from the title is that it was one of those spoof type films like Scary Movie - but having actually watched it I can definitely say that it deserves more recognition.
@@user-to3bv4mr3u yeah, that was the point. The dolls were made by racist people and possessed by murdered black people. And the candidate was supposed to be racist
I think a lot of people don't realize the female doctor at the rehabilitation thing is supposed to be like a metaphor for God, offering forgiveness and salvation, not because Crazy K deserved it but because he needed it, and Crazy K proved definitively he was not a soul that could be saved when he chose to still kill and was highly convicted killing in the name of selfishness was the way to live, that's why time was able to be "rewound" or you are "seeing something that didn't really happen" because the woman is God and God knows all things things in the past present and future and all things that happen and could happen and things that never even could happen. I mean, it makes sense, they have the Devil in the movie, why wouldn't they have God, it's sad a lot of people overlook it i didn't realize it until recently myself, but as someone who believes in God at this point in my life and knows it quite well i picked up on the metaphor.
The people in white and the DEVO outfits are angels. Catholiche does not and dies, thus being consigned to hell. I Loved this and every part of this movie.
The crazy K story it gets me everytime, I get chills because it's art imitates life. I love tales from the hood and I can't watch this at night. One of the best cult classics.
"it kind of goes to...when do you decide to do what's right?" (at 8:57), that reminds me of what Dante wrote in his Inferno, "The hottest corners of hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality".
The sing was originally a poem written by a high school teacher, he was inspired to write the poem by an image of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. The poem was put into newspapers and stuff and Billie Holiday saw it and reworked it into a song. At the end of all of her performances she would shut the entire place down except for one spotlight, and she would perform Strange Fruit to bring awareness to the lynchings happening to african americans at the time.
Watched this again recently, this is definitely a great hood horror movie, and them being dead and in hell the whole time always creeped me out, that whole scene of them discovering themselves inside the caskets always creepy
He was such an awesome actor. And he had the same birthday as me and my dad, who was also named Clarence. He was so funny and scary in "Half Baked" too.
I’ve watched this Kill Count at least 20 times now. “Tales From The Hood” was scary as hell back in the day. Especially the ending. Great video James ✌🏾
@@blingsing5383 They are Hoodoo dolls, which is very different from Voodoo.. but the racist guy constantly calls them 'Negro-Dolls' or straight up 'N*-Dolls'... In case you're curious about how Hoodoo is different from Hatian Voodou, or Louisiana Voodu; Hoodoo is something developed specifically by American black people. It was a mix of African culture and spiritual beliefs, native American herbology, healing, and folk beliefs, and more modern christianity and Catholicism. Obviously the African people brought to America had only as much of their own culture as was brought in the minds of those who knew it. But a lot of the practices and rituals didn't work here, because they required things we didn't have.. different herbs, plants, clay.. etc. So they filled in the gaps with things they learned from native Americans who were also mistreated, and took what parts of christianity that they could tolerate. As you can imagine, many blacks and the first "African Americans" as the generations passed, were not interested in christianity. They kinda hated it. Because everything they knew about christianity was used to enslave them and excuse the inhuman behavior of their tormentors. So they just took the parts they could relate to, added it to their own rituals and created something entirely new and unique. It's an interesting history of how good people coped with the absolute worst of humanity while trying to stay sane and keep their own humanity intact. The sheer strength and fortitude of those people from so long ago blows my mind.
@@DanteYewToob thanks for taking the time to give an explanation i think i heard that hoodoo and voodoo were different just never knew how (Sorry for the spelling im hiding my phone at work) Anyway stay safe have a great day
I remember it being funny to me as a kid for some reason. I made my wife watch it last year under the guise of horror comedy but we just watched it in silence, saddened and horrified at how relevant it all still is. Maybe as a kid I just didn't want to see what it was really all about or didn't have the context to know any better...this stuff just happened in my hood and all around me so I didn't realize those situations were supposed to be the horrifying part.
Back in high school on Halloween, my classmates were talking about this movie: In my history class, the gym, cafeteria, track practice, and the bus ramp parking zone. Good times.😁
@@claysoggyfries Actually we watched it on BET network at separate homes, they were just talking about it. The only movie we did watch at school however is Sleepy Hollow starring Johnny Depp
I was in junior high when this movie came out. I lied and told my parents that my friends and I were going to the movies to see Toy Story. But we watched this movie. I regretted it, because it was terrifying. Still has a special place in my heart. 🖤
I did the same exact thing, except I was the only who watched it to the end. All my girlfriends fell asleep. Bad idea. I am still scarred by this movie 25 years later.
Lol in all seriousness, I'm really glad that James has actual Captioning on his videos now. As someone who can't hear well, the auto generated captions can be a real nightmare to decipher 😒
It gets dumber than that: I am aware of someone getting their video demonetized because youtube's autogenerated captions transformed Yeager (as in Chuck Yeager) to something inappropriate. Dumb donkey YT.
I remember watching this movie as a kid, but the only thing that stuck out to me was the ending where it turns out they were in Hell all along. For some reason the imagery of their hands up in the air while becoming engulfed in flames always stayed seared in my mind. I was probably meant to see that.
This movie has one of the most impactful and chilling endings in movie history. It's like a twisted homage to "A Clockwork Orange". It scared the devil out of me as a kid, and it has never left me.
And the fact that instead of the death note being a supernatural artifact, the paper and pencil are ordinary and it's the kid who makes the stuff happen.
I assume it is given the treatment as seen with Black Panther? Tales actually aged well, as stated by other people, the issues tackled here are still relevant.
I like how James loves horror, but I LOVE how he'll pick movies like this to indirectly touch up on issues happening in today's world. Even if it's not a movie relating to a problem he goes out of his way to do little things for us, like gore, heavy stuff or epilepsy warnings. Or that time he apologised about President's Day because of it happening in a high school because of the Florida shooting. Thank you James, you're a beautiful person!❤
@@risottopose9970 and at most I agree with both, James goes put of his way to make this content enjoyable to a very large audience but despite your political beliefs you may not like all the opinions so bringing in politics can divide your viewership.
Man I’ve been waiting for James to do this movie and he did not disappoint. Plus I love that fact of how respectful he is when it came to the gang member scene when he’s shown the historical images and deaths...keep up the good work James...and you’ll get the shit 😂
Man, this movie traumatized my brother, and I as little kids when we caught it on a stay at the Circus Circus hotel in Vegas while our parents were hitting the casino. The dolls were horrific, and them coming out of a painting was extra mind fucky. . . . . . The creepy ass clown paintings in our room did NOT help.
Fun fact: In the Philippines, we also had a KKK. They are are also secret society and use white clothes. The only difference is we consider them as heroes because they fought for our freedom against the Spanish, and later the American.
R.I.P. Clarence Williams III, who played Mr. Simms, who died this year (2021) on the 4th of June. Respect to him and his great roles (this one in particular, awesome movie)
I think this is the first time I've ever made a comment on the Kill Count, but I had to. This is my favorite film of all time time. I remember seeing it at the theater in June of 95. My cousin and I went to the Plaza Cinema(which is now a Pizza restaurant) . I was waiting on this film for a year because Joe Torry was on an episode of Rap City in '94 discussing with Joe Claire about a new Horror film coming out that also starred Clarence Williams II. The source(hip hop mag) did an article on it, I bought the soundtrack from Tracks(music store that also no longer exists) and anticipated seeing it. So on a friday June 16, we saw it and it was everything I expected. I hate that it didn't get the respect it deserved. Everything about each tale is still relevant today. There is still police brutality, domestic abuse in the home, racist politicians(lol), and gang violence. I appreciate the Kill Count for this film and Bones. I'm black and all I watch is horror films, but there is a perception that many of us don't and that's why a lot of black horror is overlooked or not made at all. Also, the voodoo lady in the kkk/politician story is Rusty Cundieff's mother, Newton from 1st tale is the guy who accidentally killed Brandon Lee in The Crow, and Martin Morehouse played a similar role in Creepshow 2 as the hitchhiker that a driver could not get rid of. Another overlooked urban Horror film from is Def By Temptation made by another Spike Lee alumni from School Daze, James Bond III. Thanks for what you're doing with the Kill Count as I hope you continue to prosper through greatness. Blessings....
I appreciate the warning about the flashing lights and the noise to let us know when it’s over, I’ve struggled with epilepsy for a long time and it’s nice to see someone take that into consideration! ❤️
Damn dude, I hope you get better! James not only think about people with these problems, but this is also yt guidelines. Good thing this helped someone...
My favorite horror movie and James' review of the film makes me love it even more. RIP Clarence Williams III, Lamont Bentley, Ricky Harris and Rosalind Cash.
Double commenting like a savage. I really, really want to say thank you for this episode. You didn't treat the movie like a spoof of the horror genre like it was marketed and that means a lot to me.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS KILL COUNT!! This is SUCH a classic in Black Horror but so often overlooked in mainstream horror circles! And although a much weaker entry, I'd love a kill count for the sequel! Please and Thank ya!😏 Also, love all the easter eggs and historical context and tidbits and BTS I never knew, even as many times as I've seen this!
I think the horror mainly has to with how relevant it still is. I love anthology horrors like Trick r' Treat. But while that was horror to celebrate the holiday, this was horror on realistic oppression that happens with the race it focuses on. It's hard to watch at times and that shows the directors succeeded with their message, even if it unfortunately didn't catch on and was labeled as a "spoof"
The dolls story scared me so badly as a child that I was petrified of my Barbies coming after me that I constantly apologized if I accidentally dropped them. Which I guess explains one of the reasons I need therapy...
I know that may have been traumatic, but the thought of a kid apologizing profusely for dropping a doll is kinda cute? Like, if you didn't know why they were apologizing, it would just seem like a really sweet kid!
@@monochromegreyson Haha thanks! My mom was like "Uh ok." I actually also started locking them in that room because I was scared and because of a Are You Afraid of the Dark episode with the Super Specs, thought those black nylon people would be standing by the window in there LOL
Chucky Child's play scared the shit out of me at 7 years old, my parents rented it on VHS because i wanted to see the doll movie, big mistake and unfortunately for me, my mother had a red haired porcelain doll in our basement. I still can't see the movies and i have nightmare from time to time.
@@mactony4 Damn, that's rough- but understandable. Child's Play strikes a nerve with us because it's based on demonic possession- something very few comprehend...
It's a shame that this wasn't taken seriously because people thought this was "the Hood" version of Tales from the Crypt, this was a legitimately good movie and one of my favorites
Yeah, I hadn't heard of this movie until this episode and thought it was a spoof, glad it's not and is a great anthology horror movie. Tales from the Hood deserves a lot more attention.
The ending of this movie use to freak me out so much as a kid lol. I think the first time I seen it I was three or two years old at least in pre-k and I almost crapped my pants when the pastor transformed.

I love how the studio wanted to change the flag hanging kill
Not because of it being "too radical and controversial"
But because
"we wanna see some more Doll stuff, here's the money to budget it."
Like, a case of executive meddling where it doesn't screw over it's team but rather proposes a new take and is more than willing to provide support for rather than demand a change and expect people to roll with it.
Yeah we need more meddling like that which actually improves the movie.
That was dope af
I thought the hanging one woulda been better as the doll hanging the senator while the old woman watched and smiled at the camera woulda been creepy but this one was aight too.

The “strange fruit” James references is a metaphor for lynched African Americans that was used in songs and poems by early African American Artists
The lynching victims were referred to as "strange fruit" or the lynching itself?
@@kingayy9267 "strange fruit" was a symbol for the bodies hung from trees, a common sight back in those days.
II Captain the victims
The sing was originally a poem written by a high school teacher, he was inspired to write the poem by an image of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. The poem was put into newspapers and stuff and Billie Holiday saw it and reworked it into a song. At the end of all of her performances she would shut the entire place down except for one spotlight, and she would perform Strange Fruit to bring awareness to the lynchings happening to african americans at the time.

Things I appreciated here:
1.) James managed to cover the entire voodoo doll story without ONCE saying the name of the dolls or the tale itself. 👏🏽
I havnt seen the movie and maybe this is a dumb question but why is it good that he didnt mention it ?
