this should actually be a tv show
Maybe it's because it was the first 'horror' movie I watched but maximum holds a special place in my heart its funny not too serious and an overall good time also id loce to see you do a kill count on it though it might be a little difficult in certain scenes its a great time and F*$#@£? I love how Christine had a distinct personality, with her preference for rock’n roll, the display of emotion when Arnie dies, and the anger that’s there whenever she kills someone
I’ve always thought she seemed like a jealous girlfriend, so crazy for her lover/owner that she won’t let any one else have him.
Think she also liked cleanliness.

The scene where Christine repairs her self is the reason, why practical effects always will be better than cgi. This effect is 37 years old and still looks amazing and convincing.

In the end of the novel it’s implied that Christine is still active, as everyone involved with the original story keeps dying in traffic related accidents and the final character is left knowing that Christine is slowly working her way across the country towards the last survivor
That was the reality. No happy ending. Christine couldn't be destroyed permanently. In the end Christine was fully regenerated and en route cross country to kill Dennis and Leigh last.
No doubt Christine's demonic female entity that possessed the 1958 Plymouth Fury (Christine was a succubus in my personal fan made theory and analysis of Christine as a sentient evil object and entity that possessed a Plymouth Fury on the vehicle assembly line in the 1950's.) A succubus typically being a female demon that seduces human men in their sleep, except Christine possessed the first Plymouth Fury on its assembly line in 1958, used the car she possessed as a vessel to seduce and possess her male human owners. Christine possessed supernatural powers and abilities including complete invincibility, regenerative abilities, supernatural force powered speed, and Christine in the book also absorbed the human souls of her victims as eternally imprisoned, enslaved and trapped ghost passengers. Christine couldn't be killed or destroyed. No doubt Christine eventually hunted down both Dennis and Leigh across the country and inevitably killed both survivors. As well as Roland Lebay's younger elderly brother George Lebay etc.
@@castortroy1727 She also had a cameo in the novel It.
@@JeffTheHokie True. Even as a psychological illusion/image used by It or fabricated by It to escort Henry Bowers to the Derry town hotel to kill the adult Losers Club. 😂
@@JeffTheHokie I believe Christine herself and her demonic, malevolent female entity that possessed the 1958 Plymouth Fury on the vehicle manufacturing assembly line when she was first built, was a succubus/female demon that seduces mortal men in their sleep, except Christine possessed a vehicle, the first 1958 Plymouth Fury on the vehicle assembly line, and seduced and possessed the living male human owners of the Plymouth Fury she possessed. Including the already mentally ill, born evil and twisted, cruel Roland D. Lebay, Arnie etc. In both the book by Stephen King and Carpenter's 1983 Hollywood movie adaption of Stephen King's Christine, Christine herself was always alive, sentient and possessed with a self-aware mind, supernatural powers and abilities, a jealous, vengeful, raging, murderous female personality and demonic spirit of her own. Roland D. Lebay while alive sacrificed his wife and their infant daughter Rita to Christine to possess Christine in the afterlife after his would be mortal death and be immortal. Either having attacked and incapacitated his wife to place Mrs. Lebay inside of Christine's driver's seat so that Christine could kill his wife, whose death Lebay staged as carbon monoxide poisoning and suicide. After elderly Roland Lebay sold Christine to Arnie, he died and possessed both Christine and Arnie as well the more time Arnie spent driving and repairing Christine. Possessing Arnie's body when he was away from Christine unless he was either asleep, or working and Lebay's ghost drove Christine to kill her/their victims and enemies.
It's actually explained in the book why Christine is a red, white and silver 1958 model instead of the standard beige on gold that was on offer, it's because Christine's original owner, George Lebay, custom-ordered the car through the factory... Also as been mentioned in other comments, in the book the car is the four door hardtop Belvedere while in the film it's the two door hardtop
In the book it's a Fury too, but they mention it's a 4 door, which didn't exist in 1958 but did exist for 1959 when a sedan was added to the Fury range. I've wondered if King didn't have a 1959 Plymouth in mind when the book was written.
Roland ordered it, not George. Both in the book and the movie. The difference is that in the book George is a kind old man who hates the car and wants to see it destroyed.
In the movie he sells it to Arnie because Roland had already died.
The movie gave Roland's disposition and back brace to George. Roland is th eone who sells the car to Arnie, and he dies naturally.@@JRC99
@@rafaelfiallo4123King didn't have access to the internet when he wrote it. Considering he was a toddler when that car came off the assembly line, his memory is pretty impressive. He was also drunk at the time.

Gotta love how Arnie starts turning out like the car retailer really shows how King and Carpenter make the once nice characters turned into evil people
Yep so true sucks these two never worked together after this
Only Stephen King could make a hotel and an old car seem terrifying.
Yes. More so in the book. The malevolent ghost of Christine's original former owner, Roland D. Lebay, possessed Arnie next to Christine after Lebay sells Christine to Arnie and dies later in the book. As Arnie continues driving Christine, he becomes more possessed by Lebay's evil spirit. Lebay possesses Arnie when he isn't driving Christine and when Arnie is behind the wheel as well. In Carpenter's film its the sentient demonic female entity of Christine herself alone that takes over Arnie. But Christine was always sentient/self aware and alive from the day Christine was built on the assembly line in the 1950's. In both the book and movie. Roland D. Lebay himself sacrificed his wife and their infant daughter to Christine to bound/merge his soul into Christine so he could possess Christine in the afterlife. Lebay was the ghost driver of Christine aside from her self aware demonic female entity that possessed the Plymouth Fury.
Definitely read the book, it’s amazing. Dennis and Arnie’s friendship is one of my favorite non-scary things about the book.
It made me cry at the end when Dennis said he missed his friend and that he wishes he didn't die. Those last few paragraphs hit hard. :'(
I got close to halfway through the book before I stopped reading it, and I haven’t touched it since (I have ADHD which makes it hard for me to focus on reading, which leaves me with a lot of untouched or unfinished books and I’m hopeful I can finally finish Christine sometime now that I got an actual diagnosis and have started to work on ways of keeping focus) and I remember that I was rooting for Dennis to try and pull Arnie out of his Christine induced spiral, because I loved their friendship so much. Especially since at that time I hadn’t really seen any stories where the nerd and the jock archetypes actually had an amazing friendship.

The old man that sold Christine is the same dude who played in Home Alone, the guy with the shovel, who Kevin is scared of.
It's a testament to Carpenter's and King's talents as director and writer respectively that they were able to take a silly premise like "an evil car kills people" and make an unironically good story out of it. John Carpenter is such a masterful director, and Stephen King is likewise a very great writer.

This is a year late but Dennis is played by John Stockwell who then later played a minor role as naval aviator Lt. Bill "Cougar" Cortell in the 1986 movie Top Gun not Lt Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, which was the lead character played by Tom Cruise.

I've always loved Christine. The movie deals with obsession, materialism, and toxic relationships if you think about it. Arnie's friendship with a jock may seem unlikely unless you frame it as a long running friendship since they were young kids. I knew plenty of guys who stuck together as friends long after their interests started to change. So a jock and a nerd being friends is not only a nice change of pace, it's also a bit more tragic when Arnie dies. This movie is more than just an "evil car" movie to me.
The book states this exactly. Dennis thinks to himself that if he let Annie drown in the toxic waste of high school, the best part of him will go down with him. So he keeps standing up for him right to the end.

Eeehhh...I can see why someone would use this as a bargaining tactic. It's a high-risk, high-reward method for sure, but if you're dealing with a serious collector, it sets you up as a possible kindred spirit, in the hopes of endearing yourself to the seller. Despite the counter-intuition of it, this line can actually work, though, especially when you're dealing with an item that, either due to condition or a miniscule niche market, can get you a better deal than cutthroat negotiation.
Seriously, folks, watch some American Pickers; they pull this kind of line all the time.

Did anyone else notice the toy model of Christine getting fixed behind James? It starts out rusty and dirty but then ends up new and shiny. I love Dead Meat for the attention to detail.
Fun fact: Carrie Underwood got permission from Stephen King to pay homage to Christine in her Two Black Cadillac's music video.
I know! I thought it was cool of him to let her do that, especially since she did it so well. Like I never guessed the car was alive until the very end!
Huh, yeah? How?
I remember how much the book freaked me out. For years, I had trouble passing in front of cars, while walking.
Christine was a very good film that i never gonna forget.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the time James puts into researching the movies on the killcount then he has to watch the movie. That's some serious dedication
And appreciate his appreciation of Tenacious D
James: "Just you wait for Maximum Overdrive, which is one delightful mess!"
Me: cue famous Archer quote "Oh my God, it's just how Maximum Overdrive started!" 😁
christine: spawns
*SIGH*
*pulls out minigun*
Christine was an easy read tbh. And if you're into King, Horror or such, absolutely worth the read. Hope now two years later you found some time to read it :)
Yeah! Thank you! I love this movie! The visuals, the music, the Carpenter of it all. The "Show me" scene is amazing, the way the music cues when the headlights turn on. I think it's also a very good adaptation of the book. Speaking of which, I do like the book. It's entertaining and doesn't feel it's length. As for LeBay: in the book Arnie buys the car from Roland LeBay himself (not dead). Later on when Dennis goes back to LeBay he learns that he has died. He then meets his brother George who gives him the information about the car and LeBay's wife and daughter. From a screenwriting standpoint it makes sense to combine the two characters. The book also strongly points toward Christine being possessed by LeBay's spirit. I can't remember how the deaths of the wife and daughter connect to that, though.
This is the only comment I've ever seen james liked

"More character based, less gory movie". It shocks me to think that's how the Thing was seen. The characters are some of the BEST parts of the movie.
Critics were stupid and parasitic in the 70's and 80's.
Kenneth Bryant they’re that way NOW too. 😂😂
Honestly sounds a lot like how my mom views movies today :P Doesn't matter if the swearing is in character or the violence serves the story...
The Thing is my favorite horror movie, mostly because of the practical effects
Fun fact: Christine is inspired by a (supposedly) real story about a dodge 330 limited edition version Called the golden eagle which was used as a police car and all 3 officers who drove it went home and killed all their families then themselves, it was then purchased by a collector of haunted cars and lots of people who had heard of the story of the officers vandalised the car and every single one of them were killed in horrific ways. One person was decapitated by an 18 wheeler and another person was struck by lightning, the car never drove itself but everyone who messed with it was killed. Eventually one day, a small group of people completely tear apart the car and spread the parts throughout several different junkyards but the owner got help from people online and mostly reassembled it. There are probably some possible explanations for this story but I don’t know
It may have a kill count in the movie of 7 but in real life it has a kill count of 14
18:55 - "And car p**sy...don't even get me started on that"
Lmao
I looked at Pixar’s Cars rule 34 art… it’s weird. I got bored.
So in honor of Christine I want to ask everyone what's your favorite Christine parody you ever seen? Mine was The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Christine parody where instead of a killer car, it was a killer tricycle.
The one on regular show
Both
Futurama was pretty good.
honestly the one from futurama where bender turns into a killer car
The regular show 🤣
I love this movie. It's feels so deceptively simple. Can you imagine how hard it is to make a haunted car scary and able to be taken seriously?
Imo Christine was a succubus.
I believe the sentient/self-aware demonic female entity and supernatural power of Christine, in both the book by Stephen King, and John Carpenter's 1983 Hollywood film adaption of Stephen King's Christine, was a succubus. A female demonic entity that seduces sleeping mortal human men in mythology but except Christine herself instead possessed the first 1958 Plymouth Fury car built on the assembly line in the 1950's. Christine possessed her first, original and former owner, Roland D. Lebay. Who was born evil, mentally ill and unstable in the book from the beginning of his life, and a cruel, sadistic, mean-spirited, angry, violent man and a sociopath that abused all those who knew him including his younger brother, George Lebay. Lebay sacrificed his wife and their infant daughter Rita to Christine as a double human sacrifice to make himself immortal and possess Christine in the afterlife. After elderly Roland D. Lebay dies in the book, Roland's evil mortal ghost possessed Christine and acted as her unseen phantom driver killing their victims and enemies or Arnie's tormentors, Buddy Repperton and his gang members.
I'm not going to say brand names but one of my cars tried to kill me...overheating, leaking gas tank and wheel bearings. Kept it anyway. Now it works great because I promised her I'd never leave her.
2 words: GTA 5
yup
I was just playing gta when a flaming car ran me over
6:50 Correct. In the book, Lebay's spirit starts revealing itself while slowly possessing Arnie's body. The more he drives Christine, the more he is under its curse. It is actually revealed that it is the spirit the one that drives Christine
Although it's actually "Roland" LeBay, George's brother that sells the car, *then* dies and haunts the car. Arnold finds out the relevant info from George after Roland's funeral, as I recall
@@pallyboy6005 Indeed! Good point that I had actually forgotten
In the book Roland lebay was the one selling that owned it originally. His spirit was in the car, and was possessing arnie. In the book there’s a moment where arnie fights it, but fails and doesn’t come back. Arnie’s soul basically died
This is pretty much like the IT movies in the sense that they just took the basic premise (teens, then adults, fighting a "clown") and then just did whatever they wanted, disregarding the rest of the story.
Rollie sells the car, the whole zombie thing, the crazy time distortion drive, the fact that we're not dealing with an evil car, but an actual spirit, the fact that Arnie dies somewhere else entirely, the internal struggle; all is lost here.
But whatever. Red car go murder vrooom, I guess.
@@charon_cmlxix9458 And christine only love Roland leBay , her first owner
I’ll never forget when my dad tried to convince me that the end of Christine was the scariest scene of all time. He’s a car guy, so the end of Christine made his heart hurt lmao.
Nah. Christine still lived at the end I think. Fun fact, King purposely used the Plymouth Fury cause he thinks it should become an icon much like the Mustang and Camaro.
That car in gta it keeps klil u until you destroy it but is hard
Anyone else here during GTA’s Halloween event featuring this exact car?
The reason the novel is so long is because Arnie goes from complete nerd to complete badass.
I’d say from a decent guy to a complete dipshit.
Also cause the novel is so overstuffed with bullshit, it needed the movie to trim out the bad to get to the good stuff.
@@frederickjohnsen4246 even as a King fan, yeah this is true quite of a lot his works
Actually, the original hardcover is about 512 pages. I’m pretty sure the growth in pages is just conversion to paperback.
